Fant, Roosevelt

Sept. 10, 1942 — Oct. 29, 2002

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Roosevelt Fant of Cleveland died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at the Euclid Hospital in Cleveland.

Born in Westminster, S.C., he was retired from Republic Steel Plant in Cleveland. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are widow, Ella Fant of the home; daughters, Diana, Eula Mae, Rosetta and Vanessa Fant, all of Seneca, S.C.; son, Gerald Fant of Seneca; sister, Barbara Jean Fant Moon of Richmond, Va.; brothers, the Rev. C.A. Latimer of Pendleton, S.C., and Jessie Fant of Seneca; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was the son of the late J.S. Fant and Eula Bell Fant Parks. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry Fant.

Visitation will be Monday at 12:30 p.m. and services at 1 p.m. at the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Unity Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Dickerson, Louise
CLAYTON, Ga. — Louise Fowler Dickerson, 87, of Maple St. died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her home.

She was a homemaker and for many years along with her husband were the owners of The J.H. Dickerson Grocery Store in Clayton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clayton. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are sons, J.H. Dickerson Jr. of Dillard, Bob Dickerson of Conyers, Jim Dickerson of Morrow and Melvin Dickerson of Roswell; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of J. H. Dickerson and the daughter of the late James Cody Fowler and Dovie Jackson Fowler.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Clayton, by the Rev. Warren Huddleston; burial will be in Rabun Memory Park in Tiger. The body is at Hunter Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday to lie in state.

The family will be at the home.

Dantzler, Virginia I.

Dec. 28, 1917 — Nov. 2, 2002

ANDERSON — Virginia Nell Ivy Dantzler, 84, of 140 Wexford Drive, No. 105, formerly of Pasadena, Texas, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at NHC of Anderson.

Born in Canton, Miss., she was a homemaker.

Surviving are widower, Howard Dantzler of the home; daughters, Deborah Gaines of Anderson and Ginger Taylor of Shreveport, La.; brother, Wallace Ivy of Gulf Shore, Miss.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Joe C. and Pearl Massey Leitaker.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The body is at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Deborah Gaines, 151 Wexford Drive, No. 100, Anderson.

Cook, Jewell

Feb. 27, 1924 — Nov. 1, 2002

ALTO, Ga. — Jewell Mae Wade Cook, 78, of Alto died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Born in Banks County, she was a supervisor at Carwood and later retired from Mt. Vernon Mills. She was a member of Congregational Holiness Church.

Surviving are daughters, Linda McElroy of Carnesville, Joyce King of Baldwin, Beverly Shackelford of Lawrenceville and Camilla Rumsey Alto; sons, Larry Cook of Baldwin and Kevin Cook of Cornelia; brothers, Randolph Wade of Cornelia and Tony Wade of Alto; stepbrother, Benny Pierce of Alto; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Laymon Brady Cook and the daughter of the late Tilman and Sula Jordan Wade. She was preceded in death by a son, Keith Cook; a stepmother, Josie Roberts Pierce Wade; two brothers, Woodrow Wade and Tilman Wade Jr.; a stepsister, Nettie McDuffie; and a stepbrother, Marvin Pierce.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin-Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with Jackie Ballew and the Rev. J. Frank Sailers; burial will follow in Yonah Congregational Holiness Church cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The family will be at the home of her son, Kevin Cook, 278 Springbrook Drive, Cornelia.

Flowers are accepted. The family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 725, Cornelia, Ga. 30531.

Byrd, Grace

MARION — Grace Elizabeth Erwin Byrd, 89, of Marion, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Autumn Care of Marion.

Born in McDowell County, she was a lifetime member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church. She was retired from Hewitt's Hosiery Mill in Marion.

Surviving are daughter, Helen B. Hoyle of Marion; son, Bob Byrd of Marion; daughter, Betty B. Murray of Marion; son, Donald Byrd of Elberton, Ga.; son, Dean Byrd of Old Fort; son, Larry Byrd of Marion; and a daughter Carolyn Thomas of Marion and her late husband Farlan; sisters, Ruth Killough of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Mary Gordon Pittman of Marion; 22 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-gtreat-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Gordon Clifton Erwin and Ellen Edwards Erwin. She was preceded in death by three children, Jerry Ray Byrd, Mary Sue Mooneyham and Carlton Erwin Byrd; and one grandson, Gary Rumfelt.

Services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church by the Revs. Jerry Allen and Reggie Killough; burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.

Flowers will be accepted. The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, N.C. 28752,

Westmoreland Funeral Home, Marion is in charge of arrangements.

Brown, Chris Wesley

COLUMBIA — Chris Wesley Brown, 35, of 2200 Harden St., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Columbia.

Born in Anderson, he was a textile worker and a Baptist.

Surviving are mother, Dorothy King Lewis of the Anderson; stepfather, Charles Sonny Lewis of Anderson; brothers, Jimmy Brown and Samuel Eugene Brown, both of Anderson; and sisters, Rachel Jordan of Iva, and Carolyn Inez Burdette of Columbia.

He was the son of the late James Wesley Brown.

Services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn Funeral Home by the Rev. Harold Hughes; burial will be in the Garden of Memories in Belton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The family will be at 3511 Chipwood Drive in Anderson.

McCown, Nelle R.

Aug. 29, 1921 — Sept. 30, 2002

Nelle Rainey McCown, 81, of 2951 S.C. 187 South, Anderson, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at her home.

Born in Starr, she was a homemaker and a member of Ruhamah United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and church secretary.

Surviving are widower, Samuel T. McCown of the home; son, M. Samuel McCown of Asheville, N.C.; daughter, Beverly M. Jenkins of Central; and sisters, Vennie Jones and Louise Todd, both of Starr, and Lorene Phillips of Anderson.

She was the daughter of the late J. Edgar and Ina Stuart Rainey. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred E. Rainey Sr. and John B. Rainey.

Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ruhamah United Methodist Church by the Rev. Earl Gunsallus; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, 401 N. Main St., where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The family is at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Ruhamah United Methodist Church, c/o Leslie Hendricks, 3109 Rainey Road, Starr, S.C. 29684, or to the Williford Fire Department, c/o Betty Brown, 208 Wilderness Lane, Anderson, S.C. 29626.

McConnell, Nina

June 2, 1920 — Sept. 29, 2002

Nina Martin McConnell, 82, of 801 Autumn Oaks, Anderson, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Oconee County, she was a homemaker and a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Anderson.

Surviving are sons, J. Wesley McConnell and C. Derrill McConnell, both of Anderson; daughters, Juanita M. Shirley, Janice M. Check, Sandra M. Meece and Pam M. McConnell, all of Anderson; sister, Thelma Campbell of Seneca; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of Charles McConnell and the daughter of the late John Marshall Martin and Carrie Sanders Martin. She was preceded in death by five brothers, T.S. Martin, Grady Martin, Eustace Martin, John Martin and Elmer Martin; and a sister, Lillian M. Sanders.

Services are at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home by the Revs. Bob Marcaurelle, Chad McConnell and Mike Fitzpatrick; burial will be in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The family will be at the residence.
