Katherine M. Gwinn
Michigan native
Katherine M. Gwinn, 68, of 204 South Church St., wife of Donald M. Winn, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at 9:15 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mrs. Gwinn was born in Detroit, Mich., on Jan. 27. 1934 and was reared in New York City. She was a member of Sumner Memorial Baptist Church and attended Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Cynthia Renee G. Williams and Alberta Ann G. Comtois, both of Buffalo; three sons, William S. "Billy" Gwinn Sr., of Mebane, N.C., James R. "Jimmy" Gwinn of Haw River, N.C., and Guy P. "Pat" Gwinn of Abbeville; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Oscar Smith
Oscar Smith of 109 Berry St., Jonesville, died Feb. 7, 2002 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Ruth Q. Williams
School system retiree
Mrs. Ruth Quick Williams, 80, widow of James Williams, died Feb. 2, 2002 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a lingering illness.
She was born in Bennettsville on March 5, 1921, a daughter of the late J. T. and Gertrude Gandy Quick. She was a retired janitorial employee of the Union County School system.
Surviving are: a son, Jarrod A. Williams of Bennettsville; four daughters, Darlene Harris of Greenville, Evelyn (E. V.) Bowser of the home, Diane Williams of Greensboro, N. C. and Marsha Williams of Union; a sister, Louis Q. Shannon of Greensboro, N. C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Whitney Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Rubin Smalls. Burial will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday evening at the home of her daughter and son-in-law James and E. V. Bowser, 209 E. Henrietta St., Union.
Whitney Funeral Home Inc. has charge of arrangements.

Jerel E. Brandon UHS Class of 2001
Jerel Eugene Brandon, 19, of 503 McClure St., died May 19, 2002. Born in Union County on March 7, 1983, he was the son of Howard and Cathy Brandon. He was a graduate of Union High School Class of 2001. He attended Spartanburg Technical College. Jerel was a member of Union High School's 1999 and 2000 Class 3-A State Championship Football Teams. He attended Woodson Chapel Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his parents is a sister, Shakira Brandon of Union. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Woodson Chapel Baptist Church by Minister Eric Kershaw. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 503 McClure St. Mourners may stop by the funeral home to sign the guest register as there will be no viewing of the body. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rosa Lee Nave Retired from Bantam Chef
Rosa Lee Lawrence Nave, 63, wife of Leldon Nave, of 264 Vernon Foster Rd., died May 20, 2002, at 5:35 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Nave was born in Orangeburg on March 6, 1939, a daughter of the late Grover C. and Linda Fox Lawrence. She was a member of the Union Church of God and the Brenda Berry Sunday School Class. Mrs. Nave was formerly employed with Hardee's and was retired from the Bantam Chef. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald C. (Cleve) and Pam Perry Nave of Prosperity; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda N. and Eddie Duncan of Union; five grandchildren, Kelly Allison, Jessica Elaine Nave, Phillip Stephen Nave, Seth Perry Nave and Rebecca Ann Nave. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Union Church of God by Rev. Alton Stone and Rev. Lacy Jones. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Kent Foster, Michael Nave, Johnny Nave, Trip Duncan, Tim Martin and Brandon Sinclair. Members of Brenda Berry's Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group. The body will be placed in Union Church of God tonight at 7:45 where the family will receive friends from 8-9:30. The family is at the home, 264 Vernon Foster Rd., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Quenton P. Savage UHS Class of 2002
Quenton P. Savage, 18, son of William Clowney and Joyce Ann Savage, died in an automobile accident in Georgia May 19, 2002. He was a member of the Union High School Class of 2002 and a member of the Union High football team. Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Cierra Savage; his grandmother, Mrs. Janie Clowney; a special friend, LaShonda Thomas and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry Clowney and Mr. and Mrs. George Savage. The family is at the home of his mother, Joyce Ann Savage, 118 Horseshoe Circle, Union, and at the home of his father, William Clowney, 120 Aqua Lane, Union. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Union Community Funeral Home.

John B. Aavik
North Carolina native
John B. Aavik, 52, of 232 Lower Eison Road, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at 6:30 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Aavik was born in New Bern, N.C., on Jan. 5, 1950, a son of Judy Pippett Lawson of Union and the late Lloyd E. Evans and stepson of the Rev. Ralph Lawson Sr. of Union. Surviving in addition to his mother and stepfather are his wife, Deborah Lawson of the home; a daughter, Lillian Aavik of Whitmire; a grandson, Michael Tyler Aavik of Whitmire; a brother, Tom Aavik of Sumter; and a sister, Rhonda McAdams of Easley. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ralph Lawson Sr. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family will be at their respective homes. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Laddie R. Foster
Retired from Milliken
SHARON - Laddie Reed Foster, 63, of 3946 Miller Road, died Monday, April 22, 2002, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Foster was the husband of Pam Canupp Foster. He was born in Lockhart on April 1, 1939, a son of the late Walter and Lucy Gregory Foster. He was a Baptist and was retired from Milliken & Company, Lockhart Plant. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Todd Foster of Union; a sister, Mamie F. Kendrick of Union; and two grandchildren, Brittany and Michael. Mr. Foster was predeceased by a sister and four brothers, Betty F. Small, Floyd Foster, Everette Foster, Nick Foster and Grady Foster. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David Foster, Troy Canupp, Grady 'Butch' Foster, Billy Foster, William Erwin and Kenneth Martin. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 3946 Miller Road, Sharon. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Grace B. Moody
Economy Printing co-owner
Grace Breeden Moody, 95, widow of Clyde B. Moody and a resident of Oakmont Residential Care, died Monday at 4:48 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Lumber Bridge, N.C., on Jan. 16, 1907, she was a daughter of the late A.J. and Lena Hall Breeden. She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College. Mrs. Moody moved to Union in the early 1940s with her husband and they were co-owners and operators of Economy Printing and Office Supply until their retirement. Mrs. Moody was an active member of First Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Union Garden Club. Survivors are a daughter, Ellen Moody Watson of Greenwood; a son, Clyde Gray Moody of Aiken; five grandchildren, Gray Moody of Greensboro, N.C., Janice Tobey of Irmo, Janis Anaghost of West Grove, Pa., Jennifer Watson of Irvine, Calif., and Ray Watson of Donalds; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clay Howerton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Moody Memorial Library of First Baptist Church, 405 East St., Union, 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements. Wilson Spears Wilson Spears of 543 Union Boulevard died April 21, 2002 in Wallace Thomson Hospital. The family is at the home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Union Community Funeral Home.

Jackie E. Thompson
Retired construction worker
Jackie Earl Thompson, 61, formerly of Union, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at 12:30 a.m. in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg after an extended illness. Mr. Thompson was born in Union County on May 22, 1940, a son of the late Jack and Annie Mae Horne Thompson. He attended Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and was a retired construction worker. Survivors are a daughter, Tammy T. Beason of Rutherford, N.C.; two sons, Jackie Earl Thompson Jr. and Barry Keith Thompson, both of Union; two sisters, Ruth Wood of Jonesville and Betty Wood of Union; two brothers, Paul Thompson of Jonesville and Billy Thompson of Union; four grandchildren, Bradley Keith Thompson, Justin Matthew Thompson, Catlyn Harley Marie Thompson and Ashley Nicole Beason. Mr. Thompson was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Thompson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be David Berry, Steven Berry, Harold Lloyd Thompson, Danny Davis, John Henderson and Ricky McFalls. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home of his son, Keith Thompson, 125 Hoyt Drive, Union. Memorials may be made to Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Jesse Edward Belue
Retired from City of Union
Jesse Edward Belue, 80, of 512 Toluca Street, husband of Madge Harris Belue, died June 19, 2000, at 2:35 p.m. in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg after an extended illness.
Mr. Belue was born in Kelton on July 22, 1919, a son of the late Russell Belue Sr. and Ada Gault Belue. He attended Tanglewood Baptist Church. Mr. Belue was retired from the City of Union.
Mr. Belue was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife are six sons, Jesse Wayne Belue and Jimmy Dean Belue both of Jonesville, Larry Hope Belue and Kenneth Neil Belue both of Union, Dennis Belue of Camden and Ricky Belue of Laurens; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mr. Belue was predeceased by a daughter, Elaine Belue Grady.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. at Tanglewood Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 4 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home of his son, Neil Belue, 126 Woodhaven Drive, Union.
Memorials may be made to the Tanglewood Baptist Church Parking Lot Fund, 200 Velda Drive, Union.

Rita H. Gregory
Retired from Conso
Rita Pearl Holt Gregory, 67, of 120 Almac St., widow of Bobby Dean Gregory, died at her home at an early hour June 19, 2000, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Gregory was born in Union on July 26, 1932, the daughter of the late Sue Holt. She was a Baptist and was retired from Conso Products.
Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda G. Owen of the home; a son, Roger Gregory of Inman; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by a son, Ronnie E. Gregory.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Tim Huckaby. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Cecil Stephens, Kent Stephens, Darrell Stephens, Donald Cohen, Steve Bailey and Paul Wolfe.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30.
The family will be at the home, 120 Almac St.
Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, Md., 20852-9813.

Francis M. Setzler
U.S. Navy veteran
WHITMIRE - Francis Marion Setzler, 89, of Church Street, died June 19, 2000, in the National Health Care of Greenwood.
Mr. Setzler was born in Whitmire and was a son of the late James Gist and Mellie Duckett Setzler. He was a graduate of Clemson College in 1933 with an associate's degree. He was a retired cloth room supervisor with J.P. Stevens Co., and was a member and former Deacon and Trustee Emeritus of First Baptist Church of Whitmire. Mr. Setzler was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving in are his wife, Mary Lillian Metts Setzler of Greenwood are a son, Frank M. Setzler; and two grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held Wednesday in Whitmire Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at the Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire.
Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, 409 Northside Drive, Greenwood, SC 29649 or First Baptist Church, 302 Glenn Street, Whitmire, SC 29178.

William M. Cody
Retired from U.S. Army
YORK, PA. - William M. Cody, 76, of 302 J. Queensdale Drive, York, Pa., formerly of Union, died at his home September 30, 2000, after an extended illness.
Mr. Cody was born in Union on Feb. 13, 1924, a son of the late Robert H. and Essie Crow Cody. He was a Baptist and was retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service.
Mr. Cody was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are a granddaughter, Monica Daniell Kirby, U.S. Air Force, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son-in-law, Donnie L. Kirby of Union; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Cody of Union; a special friend, Lorraine Dell Knisely of York, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Cody was predeceased by a daughter, Catherine Cody Kirby.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Army Chaplain Conners. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with full military honors.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.
The family is at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Cody, 101 Terrace Dr., Union.
The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Richard A. Owen Sr.
Richard A. "Ricky" Owen Sr., 62, of 205 E. Academy St., widower of Barbara West Owen, died at his home October 3, 2000, after a brief illness.
Mr. Owen was born in Union on June 23, 1938, a son of Hazel Cooksey Rector of the home and the late Thomas C. Owen. He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Conso Products.
Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Richard Arthur Owen II and Darrel Jay Owen both of Union and Charles Anthony Owen of Greenville; four sisters, Mrs. William W. (Tomi Owen) Vaughn of Union, Mrs. Freddie (Betsy Rector) Vanderford of Buffalo, Mrs. Paul H. (Jane Rector) Wilkes and Mrs. Donald (Harriett Rector) Cohen both of Union; six grandchildren; and 2 step-grandchildren. Mr. Owen was predeceased by a son, John Benjamin (Benji) Owen.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Lee Owen, Charles Owen, Tripp Owen, David Scott, Cannon Cohen and Paul Wilkes IV.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.
The family is at the home, 205 E. Academy St., Union.
