Marie S. Shetley
Retired from United Merchants

Marie Self Shetley, 83, of 1216 S. Pinckney Street, widow of Joe Shetley, died Jan. 9, 2003, at 10:20 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Shetley was born in Macon, Ga. on Nov. 21, 1919, a daughter of the late Robert and Ella Wood Self. She was a member of McCutcheon Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Shetley was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving are a daughter, Frances S. Bright of Newberry; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Lillian Shetley of Union; two sisters, Kathaleen Kingsmore of Union and Shelby Jean Park of Alburn, Ga.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Reuben Wallace. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Vaughan, Don Ray Shetley, Brad Bright, Junior Bright, Jerry Kingsmore and Stan Jenkins. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1-1:45 prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be made to McCutcheon Memorial Presbyterian Church, c/o Billy Gonce, 2314 Lockhart Highway, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Virginia H. Brown
Retired textile employee

Funeral services for Virginia Howell Brown, 70, widow of James C. Brown of 300 Hart St., Union, who died Friday, January 9, 2004, in Spartanburg Hospital Restorative Care, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be David Patterson, Dennis Dodson, Dennis Davis, Jason Waddell, Darrell Lawson and Roger Hill. Dr. Robert M. Wentz and the Channel 12 CB'ers are asked to serve as the honorary escort. Visitation will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 300 Hart St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Joseph A. Esposito

GREER Joseph Anthony Esposito of Greer died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Thomas McAvee Funeral Home of Greenville. Doris M. Hughes Retired from Jonesville Elementary Doris Lee Murphy Hughes, 70, widower of George W. Hughes Sr., of 273 Duncan Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.

A daughter of the late Roy and Mattie Lee Murphy, she was a native of Union County. She was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, church clerk and VBS director. She was a 1952 graduate of Sims High School, a 1956 graduate of Benedict College with a BA Degree in Elementary Education and completed her ME Degree from N.C. A&T State College. Mrs. Hughes was retired from Jonesville Elementary School as well as the Union County Adult Education Program.

Surviving are sons, George W. Hughes Jr. of the home, Everette (Ed) Orlando Hughes of Greenville; her mother, Alberta K. Wallace of Buffalo; and a granddaughter, Morgan B. Jefferson of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Baptist Church by the Rev. James A. Owens Jr., the Rev. Dr. Donald L. Hughes Sr., and the Rev. Lindsey Bailey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be at Gibson-Brown Funeral Home after noon today and will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Sullivan Brothers Mortuary Inc. of Greer has charge of arrangements.

Frances R. Trammell
Former secretary

Frances Rector Trammell, of 104 Pinckney Place, widow of Kelly Trammell, died Jan. 10, 2003, at Heartland of Lexington in West Columbia. Mrs. Trammell was born in Union, a daughter of the late George Henry Rector Sr. and Frances Walker Rector. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church, #3 Adult Sunday School Class, Circle #1 and a former member of the church choir and was a member of the Union Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Trammell was a graduate of Union High School and Perry Business School. She worked as secretary for Emslie Nicholson at The Book Store for a number of years. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Nancy R. Shull of West Columbia and Mrs. Blanche R. Jourdan of Chester; a number of nieces and nephews and a number of grandchildren by marriage. Mrs. Trammell was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers, Elnora R. Vinson, Katie Lou Rector, George Rector Jr., Floyd Rector and W.P. Horton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sardis United Methodist Church by the Rev. Angelina Price. Active pallbearers will be Bill Horton, Jim Horton, Ken Vinson, Chris Shull, Lewis S. Jourdan, Bob Wilkins and Jerry Trammell.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: John Lewis Greer, Dr. Gerald Fielder, Ralph Lawson, Ann Harmon, members of the Adult #3 Sunday School Class, members of Circle #1, Union Senior Citizens and members of the Official Board of Sardis United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials may be made to Sardis United Methodist Church, 964 Sardis Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Beonia W. Anderson
Retired textile employee

Beonia Wynn Anderson, 90, of 304 Monarch Highway, Union, widow of James Lee Anderson, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 4:30 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Anderson was born in Columbus, Ga., on May 11, 1913, a daughter of the late Willie and Anna Walls Wynn. She was a Baptist and was a retired textile employee. Mrs. Anderson was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a nephew, J. W. (Jake) Wynn of Jonesville. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Memory Gardens in Reidsville, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 until 7:30. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Harold D. Cabaniss
Self-employed painter

Harold Dean Cabaniss, 68, of 112 Canal St., Lockhart, widower of Joyce Lenore Laughery Cabaniss, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 3:35 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Cabaniss was born in Lando on Nov. 6, 1935, a son of the late Rev. William Fat Baby Cabaniss and Daisy Lee Gregory Cabaniss. He attend Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Cabaniss was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a former member of the American Legion and was a self-employed house painter.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Cabaniss of Oakland, Calif.; a son, Kenith Dean Cabaniss of Lockhart; two granddaughters, Jatania Lenore Cabaniss of Lockhart and Genice C. Rogers of Modesto, Calif.; five sisters, Mildred Black of Lockhart, Elaine Cogdill of Union, Alice Ruth Sanders of Lockhart, Doris Ann Cabaniss of Cheraw and Peggy Thomas of Great Falls; four brothers, John Earl Cabaniss and Larry Gene Cabaniss, both of Lockhart; Alvin Cabaniss of Union and Buddy Cabaniss of Williamston; a great-grandson, Dylan G. Cabaniss of Lockhart.

Mr. Cabaniss was predeceased by a grandson, Kenny Cabaniss and two brothers, Jack Cabaniss and William Cabaniss. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers and the Rev. Paul Childers. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Spencer, Kenneth Farr, Ray Duncan, Hugh Gregory. Gary Ham and Robbie Todd Leonard.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 112 Canal St., Lockhart. Memorials may be made to the Lockhart Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 492, Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Joseph A. Esposito
Long time Conso Products employee

GREER Joseph Anthony Esposito, 84, of 213 Silver Creek Road, Greer, died in West Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Michael Anthony Esposito and Mary Snow Esposito Feola. He was the husband of Elizabeth Jackson Esposito for 58 years. Mr. Esposito served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel during his 44 years in the Army Reserve.

Mr. Esposito was a dedicated employee with Conso Products for 65 years. Mr. Esposito was of the Catholic faith and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He founded the Joliet Chapter of UNICO, National in Joliet, Ill., and was the Grand Prior with the SMOTJ, NATO Chapter.

Surviving in additition to his wife are four daughters, Katherine Esposito of S. Orange, N.J., Jane Rowan and her husband, Bruce, of Greenville, Mary Elizabeth Esposito of Greenville and Susanne Wiedemann and her husband, Gunter, of Greer; two sons, Michael Joseph Esposito and his wife, Sue, of Wilmington, Ill., and Robert Douglas Esposito of Reston, Va., a son-in-law, Marty Rogers of Greenville; a brother, James Esposito of Houston, Texas; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Esposito was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Esposito Rogers. A vigil service will be held this evening at 7 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, downtown, with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Rosary Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Tamassee DAR School, P.O. Box 8, Tamassee, S.C. 29686 or Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School Library Fund, 2 James Drive, Greenville, S.C. 29605. The family is at the residence, 213 Silver Creek Road, Greer, S.C. 29650. Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Greenville has charge of arrangements.

Mack A. Fowler
Union County native

POWERSVILLE Mack Arthur (M.A.) Fowler, 97, of 216 Orr Road, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Union County, Mr. Fowler was a son of the late Jonas Tipton and Oppie Fouchee Fowler. He graduated from Lockhart High School and Cecil's Business College. He was a farmer and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church, a deacon, Sunday School teacher, member of the Cornerstone Sunday School Class and a member of the Young at Heart. He was a member of the National Rural Carriers Association and a lifelong member of Clemson IPTAY.

Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Dorsie Candler Fowler of the home; sons, J. Keith Fowler of Crane Hill, Ala., and Gary G. Fowler of Piedmont; a daughter, Nancy Fowler of Charlotte; a brother, Woodrow Fowler and wife, Ruth, of Columbia; a sister, Anne M. Hansen of San Brune, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fowler of Union; four grandchildren, Donna Jones and husband, Chris, of Powersville; the Rev. Terry Fowler and wife, Terri, of Pickens; Joe Fowler and wife, Barbara, of Coldwater, Tenn., Danna May and husband, Danny, of Huntsville, Ala., four great-grandchildren, Kimberly Fowler, Timothy Fowler, Leslie Bridges and Kevin May; and one great-great-grandchild, Hunter Fountain.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Edith Hope Fowler; four brothers, James, John, Bill and Sease Fowler and a daughter-in-law, Elsie Moody Fowler. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Keith Shorter, the Rev. Terry Fowler and the Rev. Kenneth Holcombe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Escort of honor will be the Cornerstone Sunday School Class.

Active pallbearers will be Danny May, Joe Fowler, Timothy Fowler, Terry Fowler, Chris Jones and Harold Fowler. The family will receive friends at Mt. Airy Baptist Church from 9:45 until 11:15 Tuesday morning prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Airy Baptist Church Organ Fund, 210 Mt. Airy Church Road, Easley, S.C. 29642. Family members are at their respective homes. Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Ruby L. Hawkins
West Springs native

Ruby Lancaster Hawkins, 87, of 1727 Mudbridge Road, Jonesville, widow of Benjamin Harrison B.J. Hawkins, died at her residence Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 7:30 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Hawkins as born in West Springs on Oct. 13, 1916, a daughter of the late William Judson Lancaster and Hattie West Lancaster. She was a member of West Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Hawkins was a graduate of West Springs High School.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Norma H. Hawkins of the home; two granddaughters, Annette Hawkins Heatherly and husband, Mark; Amy Hawkins Truitt and husband, Mark, all of Jonesville; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Heatherly, Tyler Heatherly and Madyson Truitt, all of Jonesville; two sisters, Alice L. Valentine of Union and Peggy L. West of Glenn Springs; and a sister-in-law, Lottie Lancaster of Spartanburg.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Neil Valentine, Mickey Gowan, Ronnie Lawson, Billy Lawson, Marvin Harvey and Alvin West. The family is at the home, 1727 Mudbridge Road, Jonesville. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral home had charge of arrangements.

James Knox Jr.

James Knox Jr., 82, husband of Callie Morris Knox of 12 Webber St., Jonesville, died Monday morning, Jan. 12, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

William S. Newton
CPA

CHARLOTTE, N.C. William Smith (Billy) Newton, 48, of Charlotte, husband of June Ayer Newton, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at 6:30 a.m. in Boston University Baptist Hospital, Boston, Mass., after an illness of several months. A native of Union, Billy was born April 28, 1955, the son of Mrs. Margaret Williams Newton of Union and the late William P. (Bill) Newton Jr.

He was a 1973 graduate of Union High School and a 1977 graduate of The Citadel. He received his Mater's Degree in accounting at the University of Georgia. A licensed CPA, he was president of William S. Newton, Certified Public Accountant, in Charlotte. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a sister, Miss Margaret Anne Newton of Union. William J. Roark
Korean War veteran

William Joseph Bill Roark, 66, formerly of 212 S. Church St., Union, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 4:05 p.m. in Magnolia Manor in Inman after an extended illness. Mr. Roark was born in Union on Nov. 6, 1937, a son of the late Leonard E. and Lucille Vinson Roark. He was a Baptist. Mr. Roark was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are three sisters, Jackie R. Crouch of Daytona Beach, Fla., Connie R. Hyatt of Union and Evelyn R. Roberts of Flint, Mich.; and two brothers, Leonard Roark Jr. and Broadus Roark, both of Union. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lewis Roark and Gene Roark. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Joseph Ballard.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30. The family will be at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jenella P. Coleman
Retired homemaker

SPARTANBURG Jenella P. (Crick) Coleman, 102, of J.C. Bull Apt. 1810, Spartanburg, widow of Charlie Coleman, died Jan. 7, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. Mrs. Coleman was born in Union County on June 16, 1900, a daughter of the late Timothy and Elizabeth Pendergraph. She was a retired homemaker and a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Rev. Helen Holloway-Kwakye of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Margaret E. Salter of Spartanburg; a son, Charlie P. Benson of Oxen Hill, Md.; a sister, Rosa Thompson of Union; 42 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Maple Ridge Baptist Church in the Monarch Community with the Rev. Helen Holloway-Kwakye officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery.

The body will placed in the church at noon Tuesday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be Monday from 11:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. The family is at the home of her grandson, Harold Pendergraph, 219 May St., and her granddaughter, Barbara Sims, 213 May St., Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
