Bessie J. Stewart
Baptist

Bessie Johnson Stewart, 95, widow of Walker Poole Stewart, of 1574 Old Buncombe Road, died Jan. 13, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital at 9:15 p.m. Mrs. Stewart was born in Woodruff on July 7, 1907, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Ellen Chumley Johnson. She was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille S. and J. Edward Craig of Union and Bessie S. and William O. Malpass of Charleston; two sisters, Nancy J. Lamb of Cross Anchor and Carrie J. Kingsmore of Baltimore, Md.; two granddaughters, Melissa Faye Schoeffel and Teresa M. Hoffbert both of Charleston; and a great-granddaughter, Katie Stewart Schoeffel of Charleston.

Mrs. Stewart was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Electa J. Burnett, Maude J. Bishop and Sam Johnson. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Andrews and Rev. Melvin Hudson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Steven Stone, Robin Jones, Tommy Sims, Dan Burnett, Paul Stewart and William Bishop. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Lucille S. Craig, 1562 Old Buncombe Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James W. Wicks Sr.
Cherokee County native

James Willie Wicks Sr., 71, husband of Margie Good Wicks, of 280 Belue Road, Jonesville, died Jan. 13, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Wicks was born in Cherokee County on Jan. 9, 1932, a son of the late Walter and Katie Kershaw Wicks. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.

Fred S. Woods
Union County native

WASHINGTON, D.C. Fred Steven (Colfield) Woods, 42, husband of Charlene Maria Woods, died Jan. 5, 2003, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Woods was born in Union County on July 27, 1960, a son of Grace A. Woods of Carlisle. He attended James Chapel Baptist Church, was a laborer and a painter. He attended the public schools of Union County.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons, Robbie Thompson of Carlisle and Ramon Wilson of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Stacie Wilson of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Joe (Muriel) Woods and Rex Stevenson both of Union, Anthony Woods of Oakland, Calif.; and Rodney Woods of Carlisle; three sisters, Sylvia Ann (James) Thomas and Princess (Leroy) Edwards both of Carlisle and Delphia (Jermaine) Wicker of Union; three grandchildren; and three God-brothers, Herbert Jeter, William (Bug) Jeter and Harold Mobley all of Carlisle.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at Taylor's Funeral Home, Washington, D.C. by the Rev. Jeffrey T. Francis, Jr. Taylor's Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of Whitney Funeral Home.

John I. Childress

John I. Ted Childress, 66, husband of Dorothy Guy Childress of 634 Vernon Foster Road, Jonesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at 10:25 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home will announce funeral arrangements later.

William S. Newton
CPA CHARLOTTE, N.C.

William Smith Billy Newton, 48, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Boston Medical Center from Amyloidosis, a rare blood disorder. He was born April 28, 1955 in Union, a son of Margaret Williams Newton of Union and the late William Pitts Newton. Mr. Newton graduated in 1977 from The Citadel and received a masters in accounting from the University of Georgia in 1979. He had been in private practice in Charlotte with William S. Newton CPA, PA since 1987.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Newton is survived by his wife, June Ayer Newton, a sister, Margaret Anne Newton of Union; a sister-in-law, Patti Ayer of Thomson, Ga., and his father-in-law, J. Sidney Ayer of Bamberg. There will be a funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles D. Page and the Rev. Tom Crow officiating.

Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 until 8 at the Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel. Memorials may be made to Amyloid Treatment and Research Program, 715 Albany Street K-5, Boston, Mass. 02118-2526. James W. Wicks Sr.
Cherokee County native

JONESVILLE James Willie Wicks Sr., 71, husband of Margie Good Wicks, of 280 Belue Road, Jonesville, died Jan. 13, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Wicks was born in Cherokee County on Jan. 9, 1932, a son of the late Walter and Katie Kershaw Wicks. He was retired from Milliken and Company as a support operator. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and served on the Trustee Board.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Rebecca (Terry) Moore of Jonesville and Violet Wicks Farr of Union; seven sons, James (Judy) Wicks Jr. and Tony Wicks both of Union, Wayne, Charles and Christopher Wicks all of Jonesville, Theo Wicks of Gaffney, and Michael Wicks of Bennetsville; one sister, Carrie Gist of Union; one brother, Andrew (Annie Ruth) Glenn of Jonesville; one grandchild reared in the home, Letitia Hames of Union; 22 additional grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in the Kelton Community by the Rev. James E. Tillotson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 280 Belue Road, Jonesville. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

John I. Childress
Retired from Cryo-Vac

John I. Ted Childress, 66, of 634 Vernon Foster Road, Jonesville, husband of Dorothy Guy Childress, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at 10:25 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Childress was born in Laurens on Aug, 25, 1937, a son of Ruth Wilson Childress of Laurens and the late John Irvin Childress Sr. He was a member of West Springs Baptist Church and was a Mason. Mr. Childress was a graduate of Ford High School in Laurens and attended Greenville Tech. and was retired from Cry-O-Vac of Simpsonville.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Cynthia Childress of Greensboro, N.C., and Susan C. Rhodes of Gray Court; two sons, Joey Childress of Blue Ridge and Pat Childress of Gray Court; two step-daughters, Monte G. Roddy of Woodruff and Patti G. Cook of Jonesville; a step-son, Ricky Guy of West Springs; a number of grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Henry Johnson and Chaplain Skip Snyder. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 634 Vernon Foster Road, Jonesville. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, Suite 300, 120 Heywood Ave., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The S.R. Erwin G. Harmon
Retired from Wamsatta Dye Co.

SPARTANBURG Erwin Goudelock Harmon, 78, 1326 Highway 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 18, 1925, in Union County, he was the son of the late Augustus Hugh and Annie Mae Plexico Harmon and was the husband of Alice Meldora Lee Harmon of the home. He was retired from Wamsatta Dye Co. of Lyman after 38 years of service.

He was a member of Golightly United Methodist Church where he was a former superintendent of the Sunday School, a former trustee and steward. Mr. Harmon was a Master Mason with the Calhoun Lodge #81 AFM, past Worshipful Master of the Delmar Lodge, past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and past Royal Patron of the Piedmont Court #14 Order of the Amaranth. He formerly served in the National Guard.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Myra Harmon Smith and her husband, Nelson, of Pauline, and Lisa Harmon Wood and her husband, Jimmy, of Spartanburg; three sisters, Kathleen H. Grillo of Floral Park, N.Y., Ruby T. Ferveda of Landrum, and Blanche H. James of Spartanburg; a brother, A.H. Harmon of Buffalo; two granddaughters, Jessica Key of Spartanburg and Lora Dorfman and her husband, Joshua, of Spartanburg; a grandson, Caleb Austin Smith of Pauline; and a great-grandson, Matthew Lee Dorfman of Spartanburg.

He was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Harmon and a brother, James Harmon. Visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the chapel conducted by the Rev. Marv Crowe. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Caleb Smith, Curtis Lee, Anthony Lee, Michael Taylor, Clifton James and Clayton James.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 154 Mileston Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615; or to Golightly United Methodist Church, 2000 Highway 56, Spartanburg, S.C. 39302. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

James A. Miller
Retired from Torrington

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. James A. Jim Miller of Peachtree City, died Jan. 14, 2004, at Fayette Community Hospital. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus #8081, and retired with 33 years service from Torrington Bearings/Ingersol Rand.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jo Miller, Peachtree City, and children, Annette M. Dwyer, Dunwoody, Ga.; Michael A. Miller, New Albany, Ind.; David J. Miller, Sante Fe, N.M; and Barbara R. Miller, Tucker, Ga.; a brother, Earl D. Miller, Broken Bow, Okla.; a sister, Fay M. Smith, Lockhart, Texas; three grandchildren and six nieces/nephews.

A memorial mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Peachtree City on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Father John Walsh will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Building Fund, 101 Walt Banks Road, Peachtree City, Ga. 30269 or to the American Cancer Society, 135 Bradford Square, Suite B. Hazel L. Lathrop
Oklahoma native

Hazel Eula Dean Lathrop, age 90, widow of Lane Kenneth Lathrop of 1714 Union Blvd., died at her residence Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, after an extended illness. Mrs. Lathrop was born in Duncan, Okla., on April 21, 1912, a daughter of the late John Davis Dean and Eula Smith Dean. She was a member of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Lathrop was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law; Carol and Buddy Bright of Union; a grandson, Allan Bright of Union; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Bright of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. The family is at the home, 1714 Union Blvd., and will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday night from 7 until 9. Graveside services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Strong City Cemetery in Strong City, Okla. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mattie Lou Rice
Homemaker

Mattie Lou Rice, 64, 800 McDonough St., Brooklyn, NY, widow of Wade Rice, died Jan. 11, 2003, in the Brooklyn Hospital. Mrs. Rice was born in Union County on March 31, 1938, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Ruth Glenn Jones. She was a member of Jesus Life Ministries and Park Slope Christian Center and a homemaker.

Survivors include four daughters, Gwendolyn Rice-Berry and Debra Rice of Brooklyn, NY, Sherry Rice-Atkinson of Texas, and Patricia Rice-Diggs of New Jersey; one son, Isaiah Rice of Brooklyn, NY; nine grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Galilee Baptist Church in the Sedalia Community with the Rev. Malachi Rodgers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be today from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Carolina Mortuary. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.

Virginia E. Harrison
Retired teacher INMAN

Virginia Earley Campbell Harrison, 78, of 451 Johnson Ave., passed away Friday morning at her home. Born in Rutherford County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Garland C. and Stella May Searcy Earley and was the widow of James Ernest Harrison. She was first married to the late Otis D. Jack Campbell Sr.

A lifelong resident of Inman, she was a member of Inman First Baptist Church, the Fidelis Matrons Sunday School Class and faithfully served as church organist for many years. She was a 1942 graduate of Inman High School, earned a B.A. Degree at Winthrop College and a master's degree at the University of South Carolina. She was a retired teacher in District #1 schools having taught for 44 years.

As a teacher at Mabry Jr. High School she was in charge of the Beta Club and also taught adult classes at Chapman High School. She taught piano at her home for many years and was a former past president of the Jr. Women's Club, former member of the Inman Garden Club, and was a World Book Rep.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Jane Campbell Van Drielen and her husband Thomas R. Van Drielen of San Jose, Calif.; a step-daughter, Ann Harrison Langston and her husband, the Rev. Guy Langston of Buffalo; a son, Randy Campbell and his wife, Susan Kohl Campbell of Inman; five grandchildren, Angela Campbell Smith and her husband, Michael, Steven Campbell and his wife, Sherry, David Campbell, Stephanie Lockwood and Jonathan Lockwood; five step-grandchildren, Shawn Zeigler and her husband, Chris, James Langston and his wife, Desiree, Garrett Van Drielen, Alena Van Drielen and Cally Van Drielen, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Inman First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Don Bishop and the Rev. Guy Langston. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church atrium. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Inman First Baptist Church Building Fund, 14 N. Howard St., Inman, S.C., 29349. The family is at the home. Seawright Funeral Home, Inman.
