William N. Wilburn
World War II veteran

ROCK HILL William Norman Wilburn, 94, widower of Ruth Teigue Wilburn, of 613 University Drive, Rock Hill, died at his home Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004. Mr. Wilburn was a native of Union, a son of the late William Thomas Wilburn and Sallie Faucette Wilburn. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and was a retired dry goods merchant. He constructed the first shopping center in Rock Hill and was the former owner of Louise's Dress Shop and Wilburn's Clothing Store.

Mr. Wilburn was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a 52-year member of Rock Hill Lions Club where he was the oldest member and was recognized by the S.C. House of Representatives for the Melvin Jones Fellow award by the Lions Club. Mr. Wilburn was a member of Masonic Lodge #111, TPA and the Frank Roach American Legion Post #34. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and his companion, Naomi Reid.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tim McClendon and the Rev. Mary Nichols, assisting. Burial will be in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in Union at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel one hour prior to the service Friday. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Community Care, Inc., P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, S.C. 29731 or to the charity of one's choice. Greene Funeral Home Downtown is in charge of arrangements.

Frances C. Brabham
Former Union Daily Times employee

SUMTER Frances (Fran) Clark Brabham, 67, widow of Robert G. Brabham, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was born in Johnston, a daughter of Mary Quattlebaum Clerk of Sumter and the late Marion L. Clark Sr. She formerly worked at The Union Daily Times and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are Mrs. Brabham's loving pet, (Lady); a brother, Lewis (Red) Clark and his wife, Linda, of Sumter; two sisters, Margaret Ray and her husband Jimmy of Hagood, S.C. and Gayle Godwin of Ridgeway; a brother-in-law, J.D. Dalton of Sumter; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Hodge officiating. Burial will follow in the Mausoleum of the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Jamil Jets Shrine Unit. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 until 9 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her brother.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, 29605-4277. Bullock Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Floyd M. Smith Jr.
Korean War veteran

Floyd M. Smith Jr., 64, of Santuc-Carlisle Highway, died at his residence Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003. He was a native of Newberry County and veteran of the Korean Conflict. Among the survivors are: three daughters; three brothers, including Rayburn Smith of Union; five grandchildren and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry by Chaplain Jim Hager. Burial will be in Baster Cemetery. Whitaker Funeral Home of Newberry has charge of arrangements.

Melba Elizabeth Clark West
Former nurse

MORGANTON, N.C. Melba Elizabeth Clark West, 84, of 405 Old Hwy 18, The Willows Apts., Morganton, N.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Grace Heights following four weeks of declining health. She was born June 10, 1918 in Avery County, N.C., the daughter of the late George Sinclair Clark and Flora Ethel Benefield Clark.

She was a graduate of Altamont Consolidated High School, and attended Lees McCrae College and the Dell School of Medical Technology. She worked for many years as a practical nurse. She was a caring and devoted mother and grandparent who loved gardening, music, reading, and writing poetry. Mrs. West especially enjoyed creating crafts and handmade items to share with family and friends. She retained her membership at Pineola Presbyterian Church, but attended several churches in the Morganton area.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Walden West, and by a brother, Edgar Jacob Clark. She is survived by a son, Larry Walden West and his wife, Linda; daughters Sandra June West and Elaine West Propst and her husband, Ray, all of Morganton; sisters Esther Clark Winters of Banner Elk, N.C. , Marguerite Clark Chapman of Pineola, N.C., and Mary Tess Clark Coulter of Spruce Pine, N.C.; grandchildren, Jason West, Lorrie West Hoglen, Joy Clark, Susan Fortune, Bryan Propst, Michael Propst, and Daniel Propst, five great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Friday at the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Pauline, where she will be interred beside her husband.

At other times, the family will be at the residence of Larry and Linda West, 2241 Mt. Home Church Ave., Morganton. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Home Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2272 Mt. Home Church Road, Morganton, N.C. 28655, or to Sulphur Sprngs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 247, Pauline, S.C. 29374 Sossoman Funeral Home, Morganton, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

Lois B. Jeter
Union County native

Lois Lucille Brown Jeter, 83, of 100-C Cogdell Plaza, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Jeter was born in Union County June 3, 1920, a daughter of the late Edward Rochelle and Charity Brown. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Circle #1.

Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Jeter Gallman of Columbia; two grandsons, Nicholas T. (Michelle) Gallman of Columbia and John (Joyce) Young Jr. of Union; a granddaughter, Joan Marie Branch of Columbia; and a son-in-law, John Young Sr. of Union. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Corinth Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. J.A. Calhoun. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The family is at the residence of John W. Young Jr., 113 Hillside Drive. Gibson & Brown Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Blufford Joiner
Whitmire resident

WHITMIRE Blufford Joiner, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at his home, 122 Duckett Ave., Whitmire. Mr. Joiner was born Oct. 24, 1924, a son of the late Henderson and Pearl Whitener Joiner. He was a member of the Love Chapel Holiness Church in Whitmire.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary J. (Earl) Gray of Newberry and Janet J. (Jerry) Dove of Columbia; three sons, Luther (Minnie) Joiner of Kinards, Eugene Joiner of San Francisco, Calif., and William Carl (Vivian) Joiner of Newberry; four sisters, Hattie Brown, Roxie Vanlue and Doris Epps, all of Whitmire and L.E. McCurdy of Philadelphia, Pa; two brothers, William (Bill) Joiner of Durham, N.C. and Manning (Celsa) Joiner of Thomasville, N.C.; and a sister-in-law, Florence Setzler of Whitmire; two aunts, 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; and two devoted nephews, Raymond Epps and Samuel Earl Brown of Whitmire.

He was predeceased by a son, Mark Joiner, and a brother, Jimmy Setzler Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Love Chapel Holiness Church in Whitmire. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ethel C. McDaniel
Former Union Mill employee

RIDGEWAY Ethel Virginia Cooper McDaniel, 78, (Granny), widow of Doyle Dewey McDaniel, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, after years of declining health.. Born and reared in Union, she was the daughter of the late Nettie Cornila Crow Cooper and John Wiley Cooper Sr. of Union. Prior to her marriage she attended Union High School and was employed by Union and Buffalo Mills in Union and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. After marriage Mrs. McDaniel lived several years in Flint, Mich., and Columbia before making her home in Ridgeway.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Dewey (Deanna) McDaniel of Ridgeway; two daughters, Cindy McDaniel (Don) Scheidt of Lexington and Doyla McDaniel Jolly of Ridgeway; six grandchildren, Dawn D. (Ronnie) Crumpton; David W. (Eva) Daniel, Kevin J. McDaniel, Gregory J. Harris, Kyle D. McDaniel and Courtney N. Scheidt; a great-grandson, David Walker Daniel II; a sister, Comilla (Bill) Cooper Phillips formerly of Union and currently of Spartanburg.

Mrs. McDaniel was preceded in death by a brother, John Wiley Cooper Jr. of Union. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Washington Street Baptist Church of Winnsboro conducted by the Rev. Gene Rowell. Burial will be in the family cemetery at the home in Ridgeway.

Pallbearers will be Joe Wilkes, Wes Harwell, David Erskin, Jack Cloud, John Glisson and Greg Glisson. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro. Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro has charge of arrangements.

Frances H. Ray
Domestic homemaker

WHITMIRE Frances Hunter Ray, 95, of 228 John Hunter Road, Whitmire, widow of Robert W. Ray, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Ray was born in Union County Dec. 26, 1908, the daughter of the late John and Mirah Whitener Hunter. She attended Union County Schools and was a member of Seekwell Baptist Church. Mrs. Ray was a longtime domestic homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Nelson Ray of the home and Robert L. Ray of Whitmire; three daughters, Valeria Witherspoon and Mae Frances Jameson, both of Chicago, Ill., and Elizabeth Sartor of Whitmire; a brother, Malcom Hunter of Columbia; three sisters, Valeria Lyles and Marie Suber, both of Whitmire and El Henderson of Atlantic City, N.J.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Seekwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Collins. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 228 John Hunter Road, Whitmire. The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Larry Peake
Security guard

Larry Peake, 44, of Jamaica, N.Y., died Feb. 1, 2003, at Bellevue Hospital in New York. He was born in Jamaica, N.Y., Dec. 7, 1958, a son of Sarah Tucker Peake and the late Buster Peake. He was employed as a security guard.

Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Peake Chaplin; two sons, Kaseem Peake of North Carolina and Shaheed Peake of South Carolina; two brothers, Peletha and Darren Peake, both of Carlisle, and three sisters, Barbara Hayes of Charleston, Shirley Taylor of Uniondale, N.Y.; Caroline Suber of Richmond Hill, N.Y., and Shennia Peake of Jamaica, N.Y., and three grandchildren, Marcus, Da'Monie and ZaKaire; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.

The family will receive friends today from 2-7 p.m. at Whitney Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m at Whitney Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery. Whitney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd M. Smith Jr.
Korean War veteran

Floyd M. Smith Jr., 64, of Santuc-Carlisle Highway, died at his residence Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003. Mr. Smith was born on May 22, 1938, in Newberry, a son of the late Floyd M. Smith Sr. and Edna Tobias Smith Alton. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from the Sauffer Chemical Co. in Nashville, Tenn.

Mr. Smith is survived by three daughters, Teresa Jennette, Tammy Day and Karen Smith, all of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, Rayburn Smith of Union, Byron T. Smith of Newberry and Maxcy L. Smith of Landrum; five grandchildren , a niece, Louise Smith of Swansea and a nephew, Lavon Smith of Landrum.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry by Chaplain Jim Hager. Burial will be in Baxter Cemetery. Visitation was from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. today at the Whitaker Funeral Home. Messages to the family may be sent via email at notes@whitakerfuneralhome.com. James A. Brandon
Union County native

Funeral services for James A. Brandon, 49, of 405 Speedway Drive, Fountain Inn, will be held at the Community Funeral Home Chapel today at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery. Mr. Brandon died Feb. 3, 2003, in Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was born in Union County on Aug. 25, 1952, a son of the late Frances Mae Brandon. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sisters, Claudia Brandon and Linda Brandon, both of Union; Teresa Brown, Phyllis Spright and Crystal Spright, all of Long Island, N.Y.; Eloise Scott of Fountain Inn and Brenda Brandon of Spartanburg. The family is at 304 Porter St. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Paul Ralph Eaves
World War II veteran

Paul Ralph Eaves, 80, husband of Mary Lee Vance Eaves, of 4751 Lockhart Highway, Union, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at his home after and extended illness. Mr. Eaves was born in Kelton, Nov. 17, 1923, a son of the late Paul R and Sibbie Ann Morris Eaves. He was retired from Union County Maintence Department and was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Eaves was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mary Ann and husband, Wayne Grady, Julie Eaves and Kellie Eaves, all of Union; three sons, Ronnie Eaves, Stan and wife, Marlene Eaves and Tommy Eaves all of Union; four sisters, Laura Comer Essie Merle Vinson and Catherine Vinson all of Union and Ann Sprouse of Jonesville; three brothers, Ed Eaves, Weldon Eaves and Jimmy Dean Eaves all of Union; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Scott Smith, Danny Comer, Jimmy Vaughan, Ronnie Crocker, Joel Vaughan, Mike Massey, Bob Humphries and Mike O'Dell. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday to form the honorary escort: members of the Marion Conard Sunday School Class, members of Mary R. Vanderford Sunday School Class, Wal-Mart Friends, Bill Clowney, Jackie McGaha, Ned Farr, Fletcher Rhymer and Aubrey Garner.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 373 Wesley Chapel Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Hospice of S.C., 128 Medical Science Dr., Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 4751 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
