Catherine S. Knox

Catherine Saxton Knox, 43, wife of Nim Franklin Knox of Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road, Union, died at her residence at any early hour Friday, March 5, 2004. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

John W. Holcombe
World War II veteran John Wright Holcombe, age, of 1349 Meansville Road, husband of Mary Matilene Raley Holcombe, died Tuesday at 9:21 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Holcombe was born in Union on March 5, 1920, a son of the late Thomas Perry Holcombe and Lalah Ethel Hand Holcombe. \

He was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific and Europe. Mr. Holcombe was a member of Westside Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.

He taught the children's classes in both Training Union and Sunday School and served as Training Union Director for several years. He worked with the R.A.'s for a number of years and helped with R.A. recognition service. He served as a deacon as well as on many committees and projects. He was caretaker at Westside Baptist for 30 years. He was regular in attendance of all the organizations of the church plus being present at most all services. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 62 years are: a daughter and son-in-law, Karen E. and Rev. Jimmy Moore of Washington, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter E. and Beth Holcombe of Union; two brothers, George and Lindberg Holcombe, both of Buffalo; four grandchildren and spouses, Stephanie and Amie Moore of Washington, N..C.; David and Donna Holcombe; Sarah and Wade Stevenson, all of Union and a great-granddaughter, Brittney Nichol Holcombe of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Westside Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ken Snead, Dr. Trenton Connelly and the Rev. Bobby Crocker. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Toney Farr, Theron Carter, Gene Pierce, W.J. Scales, Oscar Dawkins and Joe Moore.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the Men's Bible Class of Westside Baptist, Earl Black, Earl Bryan, Gerald Inabinett, Cecil Gault, Leo Henderson, Willie Pruitt, the Rev. Gary Farmer, Weldon Fallaw, Bobby Malpass, Joe Moore, Randolph Whitehead, Tommy Sinclair, Johnny Sinclair and Bill Fallaw.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in the church at 2 p. m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1349 Meansville Road. Memorials may be made to the Westside Baptist Church Meal Committee, 105 Lawson Ave., Union, S.C. 29379. or to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Malcolm C. McDaniel
Retired auto mechanic

Malcolm C. McDaniel, 74, of 858 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, husband of Mozelle Lawson McDaniel, died Thursday at 6:35 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. McDaniel was born in Santuc on July 7, 1928, a son of the late William Sims McDaniel and Nora Hord McDaniel.

He was a member of West Springs Baptist Church, Buffalo Redmen Tribe #1, a former member of the I.G.O. and a former member of the Woodman of the World. Mr. McDaniel was a retired auto mechanic with Lawson's Garage and was also retired from Carolina Container Corp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Dianne Sumner of Pacolet and Dale Black Foster of Woodruff; a son, Wayne McDaniel of Buffalo; three sisters, Frances Hogan and Nellie Smith, both of Union and Elizabeth Hogan of Greenville; six grandchildren, Ryan Buff, Michael Sprouse, Michelle M. Crocker, Gena Buff, Kyle Davis and Jessica McDaniel; and a great-grandson, Taylor Sprouse.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at West Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sammy Cooke, Sammy Sumner, Bobby Moss, Keith Henderson, Jimmy Taylor and Ken Bailey. Members of the Senior Men's Class of West Springs Baptist Church are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p. m. to form the honorary escort.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his son, Wayne McDaniel, 856 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jenny P. Beard
Retired from Greenwood Sheriff's Dept.

GREENWOOD Jenny Puckett Beard, 53, of 307 Beachwood Circle, Greenwood, wife of Kenny H. Beard, died at her residence Saturday, March 6, 2004, after an extended illness. Born Feb. 9, 1951 in Union, she was the daughter of the late James and Corrie Bevis Puckett. Mrs. Beard was retired from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department as a detention officer. She was a member of the Harris Baptist Church in Greenwood.

Surviving in addition to her husband are: a son, Michael Beard of Greenwood; two grandsons, Cody Beard and Brady Davis, both of Greenwood; two sisters, Joyce West and Connie Knox, both of Union; three brothers, Roy Puckett and James (Puck) Puckett, both of Union and Edward (Eddie) Puckett of Spartanburg. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at Tabernacle Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Thomas. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Billy Knox, Norris Wilson, Robert Malone, Scott Malone, Al Smith and Roger Wade. The following formed the honorary escort: members of Harris Masters Disciples Sunday School Class, members of the Emerald Middle Adult Sunday School Class, Dan Wideman, Sheriff Sam Riley, Lawrence Price and Furman Henderson.

The family is at the home, 307 Beachwood Circle, Greenwood, and received friends at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Sunday evening. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mary M. Garner

Mary Louise McGowan Garner, 92, of 204 Hillcrest Ave., Union, widow of Paul B. Garner, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at 4:30 p.m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after a brief illness. Mrs. Garner was born in Carlisle on Feb. 2, 1912, a daughter of the late Wallace Linder McGowan and Jessie Baldwin McGowan. She was a life-long member and the oldest member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She and her husband owned and operated their neighborhood gas station/grocery store on Hart Street for a number of years.

Surviving are a special niece, Linda Bratton McCay and husband, Steven, of Hartsville; two great-nephews, Jonathan McCay and Alex McCay, a sister, Sadie M. Bratton of the home; five sisters-in-law, Viola G. O'Dell and Connie Garner, both of Union, Ruby Garner of Lockhart; Carolyn Garner of Greenville and Ruth McGowan of Kingston, N.Y., and a number of other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a son, Michael Garner.

Funeral service were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Roger Plemmons. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Members of the Homemakers Sunday School Class of Tabernacle Baptist Church sat in a group. The body remained at the funeral home and was placed in the church at 2 pm. Sunday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jackie W. Glenn
Union County native

Jackie Woods Glenn, 55, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004 in Birmingham, Ala. Born Feb. 23, 1949, in Union County, she was the daughter of Lillie Mae Woods and the late Charlie Woods. She attended Union County public schools. Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Jacqueline Glenn, three sons, Anthony Woods, Willie Glenn Jr. and Marcus Woods; two brothers, Jimmie Woods and Calvin Woods, a sister, Linda Woods Ray and 14 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gibson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel. The family is at 126 Perrin Ave. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Saxton Knox, 43, wife of Nim Franklin Knox of Apt. 27 Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road, died at her residence at an early hour Friday, March 5, 2004. Mrs. Knox was born in Dallas, Texas, on May 4, 1960, a daughter of George Washington Saxton Sr. of Texas and the late Daisey Saxton. She was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and was formerly employed as a nurses aide.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a daughter, Laura Knox Parris of the home; a sister, Mary Lee Warren of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Bobby Saxton of Dallas, Texas ; a special niece, Lynn Fox of Buffalo and a number of other nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Fant Austin, Jimmy Cantrell, Michael Trantham, Brandon Turner, Bruce Brasington and Butch Inman.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday evening and was placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her mother-in-law, Minnie Knox, Apt. G-1, Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Joseph B. Pitt Sr.
Pearl Harbor survivor

WARE SHOALS Funeral services were held Sunday for Joseph B. Pitt Sr., 82, husband of Jettie Crawford Pitt. Survivors include a son, Joseph B. Pitt Jr. and wife Linda, and grandchildren, Ruth Ann Pitt and Tyler Pitt, all of Union, The Parker-White Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Cheryl Dawkins

Cheryl Dawkins died at her residence in Columbia Saturday, March 6, 2004. The family is at the home of her mother at 152 Sunny Acres Road in the Sonoco community. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Joseph B. Pitt Sr.

WARE SHOALS Funeral services were held Sunday for Joseph B. Pitt Sr., 82, husband of Jettie Crawford Pitt. Survivors include a son, Joseph B. Pitt Jr. and wife Linda, and grandchildren, Andy Pitt, Ruth Ann Pitt and Tyler Pitt, all of Union, The Parker-White Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Robert Gregory
Union native

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Robert Gregory, 67, of Charlotte, N.C., died March 7, 2003, at his home. Mr. Gregory was born Nov. 4, 1935 in Union, S.C., a son of the late Stark Gregory and Annie Lee Gregory. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He worked with Rundle Plastics Co. for 28 years. For seven years he owned and operated B K P Recycling Co. serving North Carolina and Tennessee.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Robert Gregory will be held 7 this evening at McEwen Charlotte Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Charles Foushee, pastor of Ridgeview Baptist Church officiating. The family will greet friends following the service until 9 p.m.

Mr. Gregory is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mitzi Gregory; five children, Donna Craven-Sands and husband, David, of Charlotte; Angela F. Gregory-Crowe and husband, Reese, of Lake Wylie, S.C.; Robyne Sessoms and husband, Rick, of Charlotte; Steven Gregory and Phillip Gregory, both of Union; two granddaughters, Jessica Sands and Brittany Case; two grandsons, Matt and Jessi Gregory; four sisters, Ruth Cohen, Deanie Blackwood, Bonnie Eaves and Jackie Hershman of Columbia; and one brother, Gene Gregory.

Mr. Gregory was preceded in death by a son, Steven Craven, in 1982. Memorials may be made in remembrance of Robert Gregory to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Mary C. Long
Retired from Belk

Mary Emily Charping Long of 434 East Main St., Union, the widow of George L. Long Sr., died Friday, March 7, at 8:15 a.m., in Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C., after a brief illness. Mrs. Long was born in Elberton, Ga., a daughter of the late Augustus and Blanche Cornwell Charping.

She attended Bowden College in Georgia. After her marriage in 1937, Mrs. Long moved to Union. She was employed by Belk Department Store for 33 years but continued to work parttime for 10 years after her retirement. An active member of First Baptist Church of Union, she had taught Sunday School for many years. She was serving as secretary of the adult department of the Sunday School and has been active in all capacities of church work. Since 1984, Mrs. Long had served as a member of the Adult Volunteers at Wallace Thomson Hospital. For many reasons, including her kind nature and positive attitude, Mrs. Long was named (Volumteer of the Year) at Wallace Thomson Hospital in 2002.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Bill Aycock of Gastonia, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, George L. Long Jr. and Sandra C. Long of Lexington; a brother, Joe Charping of Washington, Ga.; two sisters-in-law; Mary Charping of Greer and Connie Parks of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Robert Long of Asheville, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Sindy Wilkins of Los Angeles, Calif.; Perry Aycock of Durham, N.C.; Mandy Rencher of Charlotte, N.C.; Kathy Collins of Lexington, Rob Long of Saluda, Sarah Council of Memphis, Tenn.; Jett Jerome of Morganton, W.Va., and Jenny Pester of Bidegen, Germany, and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for family and close friends were held at 1:30 pm. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial services were held 2:30 pm. Sunday at the First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Clay Howerton and her nephew, the Rev. Gideon Long. Visitation was immediately after memorial services at the church. Memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Childrens Home, Easter Offering, c/o First Baptist Church, 405 East Main St., Union, or to the Wallace Thomson Hospital Volunteers, 322 W. South St., Union, S.C. or to Relay for Life, c/o Torrance Inman, 106 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcome Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

William Henry (Billy) West Jr.
truck driver

William Henry (Billy) West, Jr., 37, of 2157 Jonesville Highway, Union, died suddenly Sunday morning, March 9, 2003. Mr. West was born in Union July 4, 1965, a son of William Henry West Sr. of Union and the late Yvonne Leonhardt West. He was a Baptist and was employed as a truck driver.

Surviving in addition to his father are two daughters, Ashley Leonhardt and Christina West, both of Union; a son, Chad West of Union; two sisters, Dale Palmer of Union and Debbie Johnson of Spartanburg; a brother, Tim Porter of Lockhart; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Roscoe Lawson of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dennis Tessiner.

Interment will be in the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Robert Small, Steve Berry, Jimmy Greer, Barry Palmer, Larry Rouse and Shorty Inman. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home, 2157 Jonesville Highway, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
