L.C. Hutcherson
World War II veteran

L.C. Hutcherson, 83, of Union, widower of Ruth Shipman Crocker Hutcherson, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at 7:40 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Hutcherson was born in Union on June 2, 1919, a son of the late Oscar and Mae Howell Hutcherson. He was a member of the Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mr. Hutcherson was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy, and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant. He was first married to the late Sudie Pearl Keever Hutcherson.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Janice Hutcherson of Union and Cecil and Brenda Hutcherson of Lyman; three sisters, Hazel Willard, Sara Riggs, and Virginia Toney, all of Union; a brother, Henry Hutcherson of Gurnee, Ill.; four grandchildren, Scott Hutcherson, Susan Calvert, Jennifer Wright and Audrey Hutcherson and three great-grandchildren, Zachary Calvert, Liam Hutcherson and Hailey Hutcherson.

Mr. Hutcherson was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Mary Eubanks, Evelyn Gregory, Harry Hutcherson and Jack Hutcherson. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan West. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Bill McSwain, Jimmy (Butch) Carter, Steve Hutcherson, Dennis Hutcherson, Howard Wells, Steve Morrow, Don Loftis and Everette Gallman. The family received friends at the funeral home Saturday night. The family was at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Janice Hutcherson, 574 Bentley Town Road.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Joy Baptist Church Social Hall Building Fund, 657 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Joe W. Kelly
CARLISLE

Joe William Kelly of 138 Jeter St., died Friday, April 4, 2003. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

Luther C. Middlebrooks
World War II veteran

Luther Carl Middlebrooks, 86, of Spartanburg, formerly of Union, husband of Willie Carter Middlebrooks, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 5 a.m. in Magnolia Manor in Spartanburg. Mr. Middlebrooks was born in Union on Feb. 2, 1917, a son of the late Tony and Lizzie Howell Middlebrooks. He was a member of the McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mr. Middlebrooks was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Arm, and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Laura Middlebrooks of Moore; a sister, Lillian Gregory of Union and two grandsons, Richard and David Middlebrooks of Moore. Funeral services were held at 2 today at McCutchen Memorial Church conducted by the Rev. Reuben Wallace. Burial was in the Haney Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday night. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Joan W. Parker
Retired from Highland Industries

Joan Wood Parker, 63, wife of Thomas M. Parker of Market St. Extension, Cheraw, died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Carolina Hospital in Florence after an extended illness. Mrs. Parker was born in Union on May 4,1939, a daughter of the late Fred and Nell Rhodes Wood Free. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Highland Industries in Cheraw. Mrs. Parker was a Baptist.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Peggy Taylor of Cheraw and Janet Northern of Union; two sons, Francis Dudley McGowan Jr. of Union and Michael McGowan of Boiling Springs; a step-daughter, Anna Woods of Boiling Springs; four step-sons, Gerald Parker of Pawley's Island, Ronald Parker of Union, Lynn Parker and Thomas Parker, both of Gaffney; a sister, Ruth Bates of Union; two brothers, Donald Wood of Union and John Ray Wood of Inman; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will be at the home of her sister, Ruth Bates, 566 Thornridge Road, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

William H. Willard
Former Ivey's employee

William Hope Willard, 51, of 416 Faith Lane, husband of Virginia (Ginger) Johnson Willard, died Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Willard was born in Union on Jan. 8, 1952, a son of the late Joe Barth Willard and Maggie Scott Willard. He was a member and former deacon of Westside Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by Ivey's Furniture.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Stephanie) Smith of Spartanburg, Mrs. Jeff (Wendy) Harger of Buffalo and Mrs. Matt (Jennifer) Pruitt of Union; three grandchildren, Brittany Foster and Joshua Smith, both of Spartanburg and Lauren Harger of Buffalo; three sisters, Hazel W. Nance of Union, Frances W. Mitchell and Dolly W. Pittman, both of Buffalo; four brothers, Joe Thomas Willard, Barth Willard and Wayne Willard, all of Union and Dean Willard of Spartanburg.

Mr. Willard was predeceased by two brothers, Ned Willard and Clarence Willard. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Westside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ken Snead, the Rev. Dr. Trenton Connelly and the Rev. Bobby Crocker.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Scott Willard, Steve Willard, David Mitchell, Tim Mitchell, Mike Nance, Mark Murphy, Joel Willard and Joe Willard Jr. The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 1:45 p. m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the men's Sunday School Class and Earl Coleman, Doug Queen, Grady Boulware, Dennis Howell, Mark Wade, Eddie Kelly and Melvin Norris.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his sister, Frances Mitchell, 959 Main St., Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James Jeter
CARLISLE

James Jeter of 523 Pinckney St., Carlisle, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home. Margaret Meador Margaret Meador, formerly of Union, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw. The family is at the home of a sister, Sallie M. Jones, 214 Ravenscroft St., Union. Arrangements will be announced by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Jimmie L. Peake
Duke Power employee

CARLISLE Jimmie Lou Peake, 65, of 112 Lawrence St., Carlisle, husband of Virginia Mobley Peake, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Peake was born in Union County July 12, 1938, a son of the late Ralph and Sallie Mae Booker Peake. He was a member and trustee of Jeter Chapel Church A.M.E., member of the Sons of Allen, Lay Organization and was a cement finisher for Duke Power Co.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Timothy Peake of the home; two daughters, Vickie Elaine Jeter of Carlisle and Pamela Peake of Spartanburg; a brother, Robert Lee (Christine) Peake of Detroit, Michigan; six sisters, Eva Mae (Earl) Kelly, Aileen Dawkins, Margaret Peake, Elizabeth (Wadious) Johnson, all of Carlisle; Cora Mae Peake and Elmira Smith, both of Boston, Mass. and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church conducted by the Rev. John Wilson.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 until 7 p.m. The family is at the home, 112 Lawrence St., Carlisle. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Alice M. Browning
Union resident

Alice Michelle Browning, 34, of 1111 Lakeside Drive, Apt. 28D, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary. Colie Gray Union County resident Colie (Bo-Dilly) Gray, husband of Dorothy Gist Gray of Berry Farm Road, died Monday, April 7, 2003. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

Julia K. Griffin
Retired nurses aide

Julia Kendrick Griffin, 80, formerly of Lockhart, died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Griffin was born in Lockhart on Jan. 25, 1923, a daughter of the late Glenn and Kate Dabbs Kendrick. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockhart and was a retired nurses aide at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Kendrick and Jane Kendrick, both of Union, and Ann Kendrick of Chester; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Griffin was predeceased by four brothers, Ralph Kendrick, Eugene Kendrick, Charles Kendrick and Bobby Kendrick. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Lockhart conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of her sister-in-law, Myrtle Kendrick, Apt. A-2, Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road, Union. Memorials may be made to the Union County Cancer Services c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her sister, Ruth Bates, 566 Thornridge Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
