Donna Gail 'Pooh' Turner

JOHNSONVILLE -- Miss Donna Gail "Pooh" Turner, 17, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, from injuries she received in an automobile accident.

Miss Turner was born in Florence, a daughter of Calvineau J. and Teresa Pollard Turner. She was a rising junior at Johnsonville High School.

Survivors include her father, Calvineau J. Turner of Johnsonville; her mother, Teresa P. Turner of Johnsonville; two brothers, Richard Gerald Chapman, Jr., and James Allen Turner, both of Johnsonville; a nephew, Richard Gerald Chapman, III, of Alabama; maternal grandmother, Alla Ruby Pollard of Lake City; and paternal grandparents, Vaska and Willow V. Turner of Johnsonville.

Graveside funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, May 31 in Garden of Devotion cemetery, Johnsonville.

The family will have visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 30 in the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Guy A. Jordan

FLORENCE -- Guy A. Jordan, 59, of 1750 Woods Drive, died Friday afternoon, May 31, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 3 at The Church at Sandhurst. Burial will follow at Mount Hope cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

Mr. Jordan was born in Jersey City, N.J., a son of the late Raymond and Constance Puglia Jordan. He was employed as a plumber at the age of 19 in New Jersey. Having moved to Florence in 1979, he later became CEO of Jordan & Sons Plumbing.

He was a former chairman of the Plumbing Board in Florence and was a member of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S. in Myrtle Beach and Columbia. He also had been a member of Boilers Union Local No. 105 in New Jersey, the volunteer fire department in Carlstadt, N.J., and Contractors 2000.

Surviving are his wife, Pinky Wells Jordan of Florence; two sons, Anthony J. Jordan of Florence and Michael D. Jordan of Columbia; daughter, Dana Jordan Jones of Lexington; stepson, Mark A. Hyatt of Florence; stepdaughter, Carla M. Hyatt of Florence; brother, Raymond Jordan of Hawaii; two sisters, Mary Conley of Brook Park, Ohio and Peggy Mongelli of Spring Hill, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Johnie Manly Davis Sr.

FLORENCE -- Johnie Manly Davis Sr., 81, of 1201 Second Loop Road, Florence, died early Wednesday morning, May 29, 2002, at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Davis was born in Lee County, a son of the late Charlie Manley and Eliza Wingate Davis. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the 12th Armored Division which was engaged in the Rhineland Campaign in Germany. He was a professional over the road truck driver having been employed for 20 years by Akers Motor Lines and for five years as an instructor for the Professional Truck Driving School for the S.C. Technical College System.

He was a member of the Florence Civitan Club, a member of the 12th Armored Division Association, a member of the National Teamsters Union, a longtime Scout Leader for the Boy Scouts of America and attended Bethsaida United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Aline Sowell; and by two brothers, Charles Davis and Maxwell Davis.

Surviving are his wife, Rev. Lucy Tedder Davis of the home; two sons, Rev. Johnnie Manly Davis Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Ridgeland and Nolan Henry Davis and his wife, Kay, of Florence; two sisters, Elsie Mae Bruton of Summerville and Celeste Segars of Camden; four grandchildren, Lisa Davis of Columbia, Amanda (Joey) Powell, Corey Davis and Leann Davis, all of Florence; and two great-grandchildren, Joey Powell and Courtney Powell, both of Florence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Life Rescue Ministries, 1020 W. Darlington St., P.O. Box 7129, Florence, SC 29502.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Private committal services will be in Florence Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Fannie Mae Peterson Thomas

FLORENCE -- Funeral Services for Mrs. Fannie Mae Peterson Thomas will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Southern Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Northview cemetery. She died on May 30, 2002.

born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of Adam and Bertha Cato Peterson. She was the widow of Jack Thomas. She departed this life on May 30, 2002.

She attended the public schools of Darlington County.

Mrs. Thomas was a member of Southern Calvary Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Senior Choir and Usher Board.

Survivors are: Willie Mae Funderburk; aunt, Mattie Goodson; brother-in-law, Herman Thomas; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Thomas, Argie Thomas.

Memorials may be mailed to Southern Calvary Baptist Church, 602 Jefferson Street, Florence, SC 29506.

Rev. J.G. Reed

DARLINGTON -- Funeral service for the Rev. J. G. Reed of 505 Chestnut St., Darlington, will be 1 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002 in New Ebenezer Baptist Church, Florence with the Rev. Norman Gamble, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc.

Rev. Reed died Tuesday evening, May 28 at his residence after an illness. He was born in Kingstree a son of the late Isaac and Lear Geneva McFadden Reed.

He received his formal education in Williamsburg County public schools and continued his education at Morris College, Sumter.

After moving to Florence, he joined New Ebenezer Baptist Church and served as assistant pastor under the leadership of the late Rev. W.A. Johnson Sr. His pastorship began at Mt. Rona Baptist Church, Society Hill. Later, he served as pastor of Mt. Tema Baptist Church, Morning Star Baptist Church, Green Hill Baptist Church and Macedonia Baptist Church in Cash. He was a member of the State National Baptist Convention USA and the Baptist Association, Snow Hill Masonic Lodge No. 387, The Order of the Eastern Star Snow Hill Chapter No. 312, Joint Stock Lodge No. 726 of Hartsville, and was affiliated with many other community organizations. Rev. Reed was employed by the Court System of Darlington where he served as bailiff for several years.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Catherine G. Reed of the home; a brother, Mr. Willie (Delores) Reed of Baltimore; a sister, Mrs. Viola Johnson of Stratford, Conn.; three grandchildren; a special nephew, Mr. Seeroy Evans; several other nieces, nephews and special children.

Wake service will be 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home with Joint Stock, Masonic and Eastern Star Rituals and at other times the family is receiving friends at the residence.

Mary Elizabeth Edge

GRESHAM -- Mary Elizabeth Edge, 55, of Page's Court, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

She was born Feb. 21, 1947 in Georgetown, a daughter of the late George C. and Myrtle Strickland Hewitt.

She was the widow of James D. Edge, who died in 1971, and was a loving mother, sister and grandmother.

Survivors include a son, Tim Edge and his wife, Dawn, of Gresham; a brother, George Hewitt of Conway; two sisters, Clara Dean of Brittons Neck and Ruby Smith of Fayetteville, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Christopher and Kelly Benton and Timothy and Wendy Edge.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30 at Palmetto Funeral Home in Conway, with the Rev. Richard Wilt officiating. Burial will follow in Old Neck cemetery in Brittons Neck. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Palmetto Funeral Home in Conway.

Jessie Mae Abraham Harrison

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Mae "Sister" Abraham Harrison will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Salem United Methodist Church. Burial directed by Smith's Funeral Home Inc. will be in the church cemetery.

She died Thursday, May 30 at the home of her daughter in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Nathan "Papa" and Marentha Jones Abraham. She was educated in the public schools of Florence County. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where she served on the Stewardess Board, United Methodist Women and Comission on Mission. While in New York, she attended Greater Free Gift Baptist Church where she was loved by all.

Jessie was employed in New York for 25 years before retiring in 1971.

She was preceded in death by four children; two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Cathleen Harley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Roosevelt (Doretha) Abraham and Wilbur Abraham of Florence; three daughters-in-law, Ethel, Eloise and Merylee Harrison of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mazie Abraham of Detroit, Mich. and Relia Abraham of Florence; one brother-in-law, Tommy Ervin of Thomasville, N.C.; a host of nieces; nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at her residence, 6311 Old River Road, Florence.

Curtis James Jr.

DARLINGTON -- Funeral services for Mr. Curtis James Jr., will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at New Providence United Methodist Church in Darlington. The Rev. Roberta C. Josey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home of Darlington.

Survivors include; four devoted children, Curtis (Daisy) James Jr., Edith (Howard) King, Rosa Lee (Robert) Roberson and Jackie (Leola) James; one foster daughter, Ms. Francena James; 12 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; one brother, Levern James and a host of other relatives.

Masonic rites will be conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family is receiving friends at 647 First Street, Darlington.

James Alton Byrd

DILLON -- Services for James Alton Byrd were held Monday at 2 p.m. in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Greenlawn cemetery.

Mr. Byrd, 62, died Saturday in McLeod Regional Medical Center after a lenghty illness.

born in Dillon County, July 15, 1939, he was the son of the late Coy J. Byrd and Geneva Powers Byrd. He was the widower of Sarah Grimsley Byrd. He was retired from the S.C. National Guard, former employee of Dixiana Mill, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his daughter and son in law, Kay and Mikel McDaniel of Dillon; son and daughter in law, Danny and Jackie Johnson of Sellers; sisters, Louise Monahan and Mildred Odom of Latta, Gladys Byrd of Fayetteville, N.C.; brothers, Charlie Byrd of Dillon, Ernest Byrd of Florence, and William Byrd of Fairmont, N.C.; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Lane and brothers, Jimmy and Milton.

Glen S. Cottingham

MARION -- Mr. Glen Stuart Cottingham, 51, of 6508 Ansel Court, Marion, died Sunday, June 2, 2002 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

born in Mullins, Mr. Cottingham was the son of Janie Rogers and the late Marvin Durant Cottingham Jr. He was employed by Pioneer Machinery of Florence and was a member of Open Door Independent Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Cottingham are his mother, Janie Rogers of Marion; daughters, Leslie M. Scott and her husband William of Greenville and Melissa D. Hyatt of Marion; three grandsons, Wesley, Stuart and Lucas; two granddaughters, Bridgette and Mary Marlowe; two sisters, Sandra Cottingham of Marion and Peggy Johnson and her husband A.B. of Mullins; a brother, Durant Cottingham and his wife Gloria of Thomasville, N.C.; and a special friend, Raydene Cottingham.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5 at Open Door Independent Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn cemetery in Dillon, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Gerald E. Joye Sr.

JOHNSONVILLE -- Gerald E. Joye Sr., 74, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, in a Florence hospital.

Mr. Joye was born in Florence County, a son of the late George B. Joye and the late Eppie Benton Hughes Joye. He was retired from Wellman Industries as a carpenter, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, a member of the Johnsonville Pentecostal Holiness Church, a member of the Senior Saints of Westside Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired Captain of the Johnsonville Fire Department and attended Johnsonville schools.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Thornley Joye of the home; son, Gerald E. "Gene" Joye Jr. of Johnsonville; daughter, Cherlye J. (W. Dale) Smith of Johnsonville; grandchildren, Stepheny (Tony) Youmans of Charleston, Brandi (Mike) Amodio of Lexington, C.J. Joye of Johnsonville; great-granddaughter, Amber Dale Amodio of Lexington; brother, Tommie Joye of Florence; three sisters, Murrell (A.P.) Feagin of Bonneau, Pearline (L.D.) Driggers of Royston, Ga. and Bertha J. Callihan of Clinton; nephew, Raymond (Ann) Myers of Martinez, Ga.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Wayne G. F. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Morris Funeral Home chapel. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be in the Garden of Devotion cemetery.
