Amberly Grace Elder

FLORENCE -- Amberly Grace Elder, 19, of 6303 Knotts Landing Road, Florence, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, in a Florence hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Florence.

Miss Elder was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, a daughter of Lisa Fay Duncan Hayes and the late Leroy Elder. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word in Florence and was employed by Friedman Jewelers in the Florence Mall.

Miss Elder's infant daughter, Madison Sierra Elder, died as a victim of the same automobile accident.

Surviving are her mother, Lisa Fay Duncan Hayes of Florence; her step-father, Dwight Richard Hayes Jr. of Florence; two brothers, William Roy Duncan and Anthony Scott McCall, both of Florence; paternal grandmother, Marcella Elder of Cincinnati; and paternal grandparents, Dwight R. and Marilyn Christine Hayes of Houston, Texas.

Memorials may be made to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) or to the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Florence Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Clarence 'Laddy' Boyd

FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mr. Clarence "Laddy" Boyd will be at noon Saturday, June 1, 2002 in New Ebenezer Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Union cemetery directed by Backus Funeral Home.

A son of the late Dennis and Susie Boyd, he was born and educated in Greeleyville. He was a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church. He was a retiree of the John H. Brinkley Construction Co. of Thomasville, N.C., and a member of Mount Hope Lodge No. 418.

Mr. Boyd passed Tuesday, May 28 after an illness.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Beatrice Johnson Boyd of the home; six sons, Gerald (Corine) Johnson, Dennis (Lois) , Garry (Joan) , Gregory, Darryl and Keino Boyd, and five daughters, Sharon, Wanda, Catrina, Natasha Boyd and Bonita (Thurman) King, all of the home; a step-father-in-law, J.C. Blanding; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a grandchild, Tonia Boyd of the home; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive members and friends at the home 1120 Hollings Ave., Woodmont Subdivision, Florence.

Belar Mae Smith

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Belar Mae Wallace Smith, 82, will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Charlotte Walters and Hazel Mixon will officiate with burial in New Market United Methodist Church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith, widow of John W. Smith, died Tuesday, May 28. born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late James Daniel and Mary Cain Wallace. She was a member of New Market United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, James Albert and Betty Jean Smith of Lamar, John Henry and Hattie Smith of McBee, Charles and LaVonde Smith of Hartsville, and Jennings Smith of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Morrell, Jeanette and Ray Winburn, Patricia and Roy Flowers, all of Hartsville; and grandchildren, Kay Hewitt, Faye Morrell, Ray Morrell, Nay Morrell, Billy Joe Smith, Chris Smith, Wes Smith, Steven Winburn, Jonathan Winburn, Jennifer Walters, Melissa Flowers, Holly Freeman and B.J. Smith.

Maggie Williamson

DARLINGTON -- Funeral service for Mrs. Maggie Williamson will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002 in Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington.

Mrs. Williamson died Tuesday, May 28 in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late Willie and Jessie Wilds McCall.

She was a graduate of Rosenwald High School and was a life member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Junior Choir, Usher Board, Gospel Choir and president of the Mass Choir until her declining health.

She was a former employee of Wilson Medical Center.

Survivors include husband, Edward Williamson Sr. of the home; two sons, Edward (Stephanie) Williamson of Charlotte, N.C., and Harlise Jerry (Marcella) McCall of Darlington; a daughter, Vanessa McCall Robinson of Darlington; five grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Smith and Eliza Moore of New York; two brothers, Cary (Lizzie) McCall of Darlington and Radmond (Cora) Patterson of New York; nine brothers-in-law; 11 sisters-in-law; a goddaughter, Shawn Parker; three uncles; three aunts; a host of nieces and nephews. Two sons, Willie and Albertus Williamson, and brothers, Leroy and Arthur McCall, preceded her in death.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 112 Kennedy St., Darlington.

William Herey Strickland

CONWAY -- William Herey Strickland, age 64, of Conway died Sunday, June 2, 2002 at McLeod Regional Medical Center. born in Horry County, Mr. Strickland was the son of the late Samuel Herey and Christine Harrelson Strickland and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Mr. Strickland was predeceased by a son, William Kohn Strickland and one sister, Azalea Carmichael.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4 at Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Watson, officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Branch Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Strickland is survived by one brother, Jack Strickland of Mullins; two sisters, Ouida Sarvis of Florence and Nancy Jo Magera of Mullins.

Memorials may made to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 13403 Hwy. 19, Nichols, S.C. 29581.

Lillie Mae Davis

FLORENCE -- Graveside funeral services for Lillie Mae Davis, 72, will be 4 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Garden of Memories cemetery, Pamplico Highway, Florence. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30-3:30 p.m., at Cain-Poston Funeral Home. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials to the American Heart Association, 181 E. Evans St., Florence, SC 29505.

Mrs. Davis died Friday, May 31, 2002 in local hospital following an illness. born July 15, 1929, in the Spring Branch Community in Horry County, she was the daughter of the late William David and Ether Lee Barnhill Merritt. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Davis will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend by all who knew her.

She is survived by two sons, Charles L. Davis (Sharon) of Connecticut, and James E. "Bo" Davis, of Florence; two daughters, Sherry Miller, (Steve) , and Joyce Hudson, both of Florence; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Reather Herring of Dillon, and her former husband, Vaughn "Jack" Davis of Florence.

Services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.

Joseph R. Hernandez

FLORENCE -- Graveside services with full Military Honors for (Ret) SMG. Joseph R. Hernandez will be held Friday, May 31, 2002 at 3 p.m. at the Florence National cemetery, directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home, Inc. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8:00pm at the funeral home.

(Ret) SMG Joseph R. Henandez, 79 died Monday, May 27, 2002 at his home in Columbus, Georgia. born March 19, 1923, in Exeter, CA, SGM Hernandez was the son of the late Juan and Benita Robles Hernandez. He lived in Columbus since 1955 and retired from the US Army with 30 years of service. During his career, he served in Korea and Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys M. Hernandez of Columbus, GA; two daughters, Vickie Tyner (Carson) of Florence, SC and Janice Bennett (Timothy) of Indianapolis, IN; three step-sons, Wayne Murphy of Columbus, GA, Jerry Murpy of CA, and James Murphy of Owings Mills, MD. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home, Inc.

Charles Legette Simmons

SUMTER -- Charles Legette Simmons, 83, husband to Eloise Bennett Simmons, died on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Simmons was born in Florence County, the son of the late Durant Wynne and Nettie Cox Simmons. He retired in 1975 serving as a director of Adult Education for the State Commission for the Blind. He was a former area supervisor of the S.C. Commission for the Blind, and was listed in "Personality of the South" in 1970. He was a Methodist.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, James Wynne Simmons of Sumter, and a sister, Sophie S. McClam of Lake City.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with full Masonic Rites.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the S.P.C.A., 1140 Guignard Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to "PAWS, " P.O. Box 1037, Lynnwood, Wash. 98046.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Sara Jean Harrell

FLORENCE -- Sara Jean Harrell, 81, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 in a local health care facility after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 in Ebenezer Baptist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Sebery Thomas and Sara Richardson Harrell.

Miss Harrell was an employee of Dorothy Green Florist for 31 years, and was named the South Carolina Employee of the Year, 1970-1971. She also was a member of the S.C. Florist Association. She was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. for 14 years in catalog sales.

She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

Survivors include two sisters, Irma E. Harrell and Virginia H. DeCius, and a sister-in-law, Laura Harrell, all of Florence; a nephew, John (Beverly) Harrell of Florence; and several grand-nieces and -nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Carolinas Hospice, 947 S. Irby St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Mimie Patterson Jones

DARLINGTON -- Funeral service for Mrs. Mimie Patterson Jones will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 in Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington.

Mrs. Jones died Friday, Sept. 28 at the residence of her daughter, Shirley Alford, after an illness. She was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late Tommy and Nora Lowe Patterson. She was the widow of George Jones.

She received her formal education in Darlington County public schools. She was a member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church. For a number of years, she lived in Manhattan, N.Y., where she was gainfully employed and when her health began to fail she returned to Darlington County.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Alford and Louise Alford both of Darlington; a son, Robert Lee Jackson of Darlington; a stepson, Warren (Willistine) Wingate of New York City; two sisters, Francis (Moses) Jenkins and Susie (Carl) Samuel, both of Charlotte, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two aunts, Mrs. Fannie Bennett and Mrs. Agnes Jackson, both of Darlington; three sisters-in-law, Flora Lee Patterson, Harriett Patterson and Emma Patterson; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

The family is receiving friends at the home of a daughter, Shirley Alford, 501 Journey's End Road, Darlington.

Melton Tyrone Goodson

TIMMONSVILLE -- Funeral services for Mr. Melton Tyrone Goodson will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at Mt. Rona Baptist Church, Effingham, with Dr. Truman C. Tart, pastor, directed by Bowman's Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Tyrone was born Aug. 8, 1975 to Randolph and Frances Goodson. He attended St. Mark Freewill Baptist Church at an early age. Tyrone was educated in Timmonsville public schools and received his barber's license from Thompson Barber College of Florence. He departed this life on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001.

To share his memories he leaves his parents, Randolph and Frances Goodson of Timmonsville; two daughters, Cierra Farrier and Tyra Jaquanna Goodson, and a son, Tyriq Rashon Goodson, all of Timmonsville; an adopted daughter, Laquita Ennis, and two adopted sons, Tracy Ennis and Derrick Hunt, all of the home; a sister, Helen M. Goodson of Timmonsville; three brothers, Randolph (Margaret) Goodson Jr. of Durham, N.C., Gary (Devone) Goodson of Lynchburg and Kennedy Randy McCullough of Lamar; a niece, Latosha Rachele Goodson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a maternal grandfather, Melton (Mary) Lewis of Long Island, N.Y.; a paternal grandmother, Hallie Goodson of Hartsville; a special friend, Subreia Hunt of the home; five nieces; two nephews; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The family will be receiving friends at the home of his parents, 1028 Brockington St., Timmonsville.

Dorothy S. Singletary

MONCKS CORNER -- Dorothy "Dot" Smith Singletary, 65, of Moncks Corner, a retired secretary with Home Telephone Company, died Saturday at her residence.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Russell Funeral Chapel, Moncks Corner. Burial will be in Berkley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Singletary was born Aug. 4, 1936, in Berkeley County, a daughter of Relma T. Smith and Wilbur Hill Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner.

Surviving are her husband, McKeever R. Singletary of Moncks Corner; two daughters, Debbie S. McCay of Moncks Corner, Karen D. Singletary of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Michael R. Singletary of Florence; two brothers, Jimmy Smith and Keith Smith, both of Moncks Corner; four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at Russell Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice Southern Care, 2070 North Brook Boulevard, Suite B1, North Charleston, S.C. 29406.
