Margaret Howard McEachin

FLORENCE -- Margaret Howard McEachin died at her home early Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, 2001. She was in her hundredth year. She was born in her parent's home at Claussen, South Carolina, the daughter of Fitz Lee Howard and Louisa Penn Ervin Howard. She was the widow of Peter Hector McEachin. One child was born of this union, Daniel Malloy McEachin.

After academic preparation at Flora McDonald, she entered Converse College and graduated in 1923. At the conclusion of her education, she spent her long and productive life in Florence, South Carolina. She taught school in Claussen, South Carolina, until her marriage in 1924.

She was an avid outdoorswoman whose passion was gardening. She was a member of the City of Florence Park Commission. She, along with Frank Key Sr., was instrumental in the construction and care of Lucas Park. She cultivated and propagated camellias. She was a Master Gardener.

She was the oldest member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She organized the St. John's Episcopal Church Plant Bazaar and was active in the Women of the Church.

She was a member of the Renaissance Literary Club. She was also a member of the Plain Dirt Garden Club and the Iris Garden Club. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

In addition to her son of Florence, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth E. McEachin; her sister, Amelia H. Anthony of Hartsville, SC; her granddaughter, Margaret M. Gates (Dennis) of Oregonia, Ohio; her grandson, Daniel Malloy McEachin Jr. (Amy) of Florence; her great-grandchildren, Samuel G. Gates of Oregonia, Ohio, FitzLee H. McEachin, Peter H. McEachin, Amy E. McEachin and Daniel Malloy McEachin III, all of Florence.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Charles D. Cooper at St. John's Episcopal Church in Florence at 3 p.m. today directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mount Hope cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Daniel M. McEachin.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 252 S. Dargan St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Edith Long

LATTA -- Edith Long, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 at St. Eugene Medical Center.

Mrs. Long was born in Latta, Oct. 22, 1923 and was a daughter of the late David Leroy and Martha Johnson Collins. She was the wife of Paul Long. They had been married for 53 years. She was a member of Latta Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001 at Latta Baptist Church with burial in Magnolia cemetery in Latta directed by Kannaday's Funeral of Latta.

She is survived by her husband, Pail Long of the home; sons, Kenneth W. Long, Timothy D. Long, David L. Long, of Latta and Michael P. Long of Dillon and 12 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by brothers, Leverne Collins, Jake C. Collins, Marvin Collins, Forest Collins and Lanneau and sister, Mattie Lee Hardy.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001 at Kannaday's Funeral Home in Latta.

Edgar L. 'P'Nut' Cox Sr.

JOHNSONVILLE -- Edgar L. "P'nut" Cox, Sr, 83, died Friday Sept. 28, 2001 in a Florence nursing center after an illness.

Mr. Cox was born in Johnsonville, a son of the late Andrew J. Cox, Sr. and the late Docia Creel Cox. He was a member of the Johnsonville United Methodist Church, Men's Bible Class of the church, former trustee of Johnsonville Schools, served 3 terms as Mayor of the City of Johnsonville, served 3 terms as Council man and served as magistrate constable. He was an avid hunter and was a graduate of Johnsonville High School.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Turner Cox of the home; two sons, Edgar L. Cox, Jr. of Charleston, SC, Marion G. (Melba) Cox of Lexington, SC; three granddaughters, Lisa Rivers of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Suzanne Cox of Raleigh, NC and Krista Moody of York, SC; grandson, Matt Savage of Columbia, SC; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Lazarus of Mt. Pleasant and Jack Moody of York, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Sunday in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway with burial in the Garden of Devotion cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9PM Saturday.

Buren E. (Egg I) McCracking

JOHNSONVILLE -- Buren E. (Egg I) McCracking, 68, died Tuesday Oct. 9, 2001 at his home after an illness.

Mr. McCracking was born in Johnsonville, a son of the late John William McCracking and the late Myrtle Gaster McCracking. He was a retired construction foreman, a US Marine veteran, a member of the Kingsburg Baptist Church and attended Johnsonville schools.

He was married to the late Jeanette McLellan McCracking.

Surviving are one son, Phillip Edgar McCracken of Johnsonville; two daughters, Debra M. Baxley of Hemingway, SC and Becky M. Hartfield of Johnsonville;brother, Eugene McCracking of Pensacola, FL; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Thursday in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway with burial in the Garden of Devotion cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7 to 9 PM Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Daniel D. 'Smoke' Cooper

FLORENCE -- Friends and family are invited to funeral services for Mr. Daniel C. Cooper 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Wesley United MethodistChurch. Burial will follow in Myers cemetery, Effingham. He died Tuesday, October 2, 2001 in a local hospital.

born in Florence County, he was the son of Leila Mae Brooks Cooper and the late Tommie Cooper, Jr.

He attended the public schools of Florence, SC.

Survivors are his mother; six sisters, Lillie McKithen, Amy Marie (Sylvester) Henry, Patricia Cooper, Gwynn Cooper, Josephine (Stephen) Scott, Cynthia Cooper; six brothers, Nelson Cooper and Tommie (Clara) Cooper, III, James L. (Eddie Mae) Cooper, Lynn Cooper, Gary (Brenda) Cooper, Sylvaris Dennis Cooper.

Family is receiving friends at 707 Battle Lane, Florence.

Charles Hoffman

FLORENCE -- Charles Hoffman, 89, of Florence, formerly of Delray Beach, Florida, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at the Windsor House. born January 27, 1912, in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Morris Hoffman and Fannie Tuchinsky Hoffman. He was the husband of the late Irene Klenetsky Hoffman. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Hoffman.

Mr. Hoffman was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue in Florence, SC. He was a salesman specializing in mens clothing.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Hoffman and Bonnie of McBee, SC; two sisters, Sandra Waldman of Delray Beach, Florida, and Ceil Saltzman of Pompano Beach, Florida. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Sarah Hoffman and Heather Hoffman; and a grandson, Brian Hoffman.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at 2:15pm at Star of David Funeral Home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

A Memorial Service will be held at Beth Israel Synagogue, Florence, SC, on Friday, October 5, 2001 at 8:00pm.

Funeral arrangements are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.

Emory Neil Lane Sr.

FLORENCE -- Emory Neil Lane Sr., 63, of 301 Lansdale Dr., died Monday evening Sept. 17, 2001 at a Florence hospital after an illness.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday Sept. 20, 2001 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope cemetery. Mr. Lane was born in Williamsburg County a son of the late Joseph Eston and Sadie Duke Lane. He was a member of Eastside Christian Church. He was employed by Carolina Supply House and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Richburg Lane of Florence; son, Emory Neil Lane Jr. of Darlington; daughter, Connie Lane Driggers of Florence; brothers, J.E. Lane Jr. and Lloyd R. Lane both of Kingstree; sisters, Carolyn L. McConnell and Grace L. Robinson both of Kignstree and Miriam L. McCain of Effingham; grandchildren, Garrett Driggers, Justin Driggers, Shawn Driggers, Taylor Lane and Cameron Lane.

Memorials may be made to Eastside Christian Church, 3541 E. Palmetto St., Florence 29506.

Genevieve W. Moody

MULLINS -- Genevieve Wallace Moody, 82, widow of Bishop Moody, died Saturday, Oct. 6, at Saint Eugene Medical Center in Dillon after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Cox-Collins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Saint Paul Methodist Church cemetery in Little Rock, SC.

Mrs. Moody was born July 8, 1919 in Dillon County, a daughter of the late Andrew Wallace and Alice W. Wallace. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mullins First Baptist Church. Also, Mrs. Moody was a member of the TEL Sunday School class, the Senior Saints, the V.I.P., the Kathryn Grant Group, the Pioneer Club of CP&L; and a member of the Flora Bunda Garden Club.

Surviving are six sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Christine Pittman, Grace Wallace and Neva and Lide Moody all of Dillon, Lila Pasek of Charlotte, NC, Johnnie Moody and Max Moody of Tallahassee, Florida and Isabelle Moody of Columbia; several cousins and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Mullins Rescue Squad, PO Drawer 408, Mullins, SC 29574 or to the Dillon Rescue Squad, PO Box 1025, Dillon, SC 29536.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mickey Larue Rogers

EFFINGHAM -- Mickey Larue Rogers, 45, of 4662 Heywood Road, Effingham, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, 2001 in a Florence hospital from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Florence Memorial Gardens, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence of his sister, 627 Cricklewood Drive, Florence.

Mr. Rogers was born in Florence County, a son of the late Johnny and Elizabeth Price Rogers.

Surviving are six sisters, Gladys Hodges of Greenville, N.C., Norma Rouse of Marion, Syble Kennedy of Carthage, N.C., Judy Daugherty of West Palm Beach, Fla., Debra Gail Hill of Effingham and Martha Blaton of Florence; three brothers, Johnny Rogers Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C., Paul Rogers of North Myrtle Beach and Keith Rogers of Southport, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Cleo Jackson

FLORENCE -- Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Cleo Jackson, 3:00 p.m. Friday at Maxwell Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. She died on October 15, 2001 in a local hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Jackson was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Mitchell and Annie Anderson Planter. She was the widow of James "Jim" Johnson.

She was a member of Maxwell Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Board.

Survivors are five children, Rosa Lee Brooks, of Pamplico, Margaret Moses and Annie Walker of Hillside, NJ, Cheryl Jackson, and Tillie "Bunny" Peebles, of Florence; two sons-in-law, Leo Walker, and George Peebles; ten grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Family is receiving friends at 1109 E. Kershaw Street.
