Retired beauty shop owner

Ramoth Jeanette Humphries Austin, 82, of 306 Hillcrest Ave., widow of Eddie M. Austin, died at her home Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 9 a.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Austin was born in Union on Oct. 13, 1920, a daughter of the late John and Inez Fowler Humphries. She was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church. Mrs. Austin was the retired owner and operator of Jeanette's Beauty Shop.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ramoth and Frank O'Shields of Union; a grandson reared in the home, Mark Austin; two brothers, Franklin Humphries of Spartanburg and James Humphries of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Janet Hines, Allan Hines, Scott Hines, Christy Bledsoe, Laura O'Shields and Farrah Wyatt, all of Union and seven great-grandchildren, Leslie Hines, Kateline Palmer, Nicholas Bledsoe, Jordan Austin, Chance Austin, Alaina Austin and Isaac Bledsoe, all of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Joe Blalock. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Michael Shane Bledsoe, Jack Garner, John Harris, Robert Adams, Gene Monroe and Kenny Scott. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Ramoth and Frank O'Shields, 625 Old Pump Station Road. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Herbert F. Blanchard
Owner Blanchard Sand and Gravel

SPARTANBURG Herbert Fred (Hub) Blanchard, 93, of 268 Canaan Church Road, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of the late M. V. (Mont) and Nellie Ross Blanchard and widower of the late Beryl Jewell Blanchard.

He was the owner/operator of H. F. Blanchard Sand and Gravel and was known in the construction community as (The Sandman.) He was a member of Canaan Baptist Church where he was a former deacon. He was also a member of the Spartanburg Home Builders Association, was an avid NASCAR fan, and a longtime member of the S.C. State Guard.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth (Pan) Millwood of Anderson, Judy Hayes and Lynn Lawson, both of Spartanburg, two sons, Ronnie Blanchard of Boiling Springs and Warren Blanchard of Roebuck; a sister, Marian Munch of Spartanburg; a brother, Earl Blanchard of Spartanburg; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and a lifetime friend, Billy Joe Ivey.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Shropshire; sisters, Carrie Mabry and Ethel Thomas and brothers, Ronald, Roy and Ross Blanchard. Visitation will be 6 until 8 p.m. today at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Lewis Vehaun.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Canaan Baptist Church Building Fund, 701 Canaan Road, Spartanburg, S C., 29306. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.

James E. Leonhardt
Tyger River Plant retiree

James Edward Leonhardt, 68, of 413 Stutts Ave., husband of Mary A. Leonhardt, died at his home Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 7 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Leonhardt was born in Union on Aug. 6, 1934, a son of Lee Ann Maness Leonhardt Lawson of Union and the late John Lewis Leonhardt. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Faith. Mr. Leonhardt was a life-time member of Masonic Lodge #75, and a former member of the S.C. National Guard. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from Torrington Co., Tyger River Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jean and Ronald Sanders of Coker, Ala.; three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Charles and Karen Leonhardt of Pellion, Kenneth and Leah Leonhardt of Union and Mike and Amy Leonhardt of North Augusta; three brothers, Richard Lawson of Union, Roscoe Lawson of Jonesville and Tommy Leonhardt of Newberry; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Sanders, Jordan Leonhardt, Connor Leonhardt, Jared Leonhardt, Rachel Leonhardt, Stefan Leonhardt, Lebby Leonhardt and Patrick Leonhardt.

Mr. Leonhardt was predeceased by a sister, Yvonne Leonhardt West. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham and the Rev. Jim Hord. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Torrington Retirement Group are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Saturday at 2:45 to form the honorary escort. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 9. Memorials may be made to the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Building Fund, 131 Bishop Road, Union, S.C. 29379, or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Millwood
Retired from Monarch Plant

Mary West (Mickey) Millwood, 83, formerly of Buffalo, widow of James L. (Chub) Millwood, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Millwood was born in Great Falls on July 2, 1919, a daughter of the late Paul and Leva Hawkins West.

She was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church, a former member of the Chancel Choir, a member of the Rosa Rountree Sunday School Class and the Annie Massey Circle. Mrs. Millwood was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant and also retired from AAR Canteen Service.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Hugh Sanders of Buffalo; two grandsons, Russ and Rhonda Sanders, Tracy and Lori Sanders all of Buffalo; and three great-grandchildren, Courtney Sanders, Codey Sanders and Lee Sanders, all of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Philip Chandler. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Spartanburg. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Hugh Sanders, 148 Bailey Road, Buffalo, and will receive friends at the church Saturday from 1-2 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Buffalo United Methodist Church, 2003 Church Renovations Fund, P.O. Box 176, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lois S. Franklin
Retired from Ace Sweater Mill

Lois Sanders Franklin, 87, formerly of 185 Rogerstown Road, Jonesville, widow of Jimmy (Jim) Lee Franklin, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at 10:10 p.m. in the Westside Nursing Center, Greenville. Mrs. Franklin was born on March 13, 1917 in Union, a daughter of the late Heyward and Polly McNease Sanders. She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and was active in church as long as her health permitted. She was retired from Ace Sweater Mill. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are five daughters, Elizabeth Ivester of Jonesville, Willie Rogers of Union, Jessie Cobb of Easley, Donna Boulware of Buffalo and Jimmie Vaughn of Gaffney; two sons, Joe Franklin and Bobby Gene Franklin, both of Jonesville; 24 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Lincoln Neely and the Rev. Joe Stover. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the church immediately following the committal service. Memorials may be made to the Westside Nursing Center Building Fund, 8 North Texas Ave., Greenville, S.C. 29611. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Lura H. Braun
North Dakota native

Lura Harrington Braun, 88, widow of George Braun, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Braun was born in Minot, N.D., on Jan. 24, 1915, a daughter of the late Roy and Gladys Stephens Harrington. She was a graduate of West Michigan University and was a member of the Arden Presbyterian Church, Arden, N.C.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas George Braun of Huntersville, N.C. and Jeffrey Roy Braun of Eufaula, Ala.; a sister, Jeanne Phillips of New Zealand; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Colie Gray
Westpoint Pepperell employee

Colie (Bo-Dilly) Gray, 49, husband of Dorothy Gist Gray of 1139 Berry Farm Road, died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Gray was born in Union County on March 22, 1954, a son of the late Colie and Josephine Johnson Gray. Mr. Gray was an employee of Westpoint Pepperell and was educated in Union County schools. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Timothy (Kesha) Gist of Greenville, Terrance D. Gray, Colie (CJ) Gray III and Ryan A. Gray, all of the home; three brothers, Robert (Patricia) Gray, Bobby (Marie) Gray and Darrell (Carolyn) Gray, all of Union; four sisters, Barbara (Cleo) Jones of Santuc, Shirley Hunter (William) Rice, Debra Gray and Mary (Earl) Johnson, all of Union; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethesda Baptist Church by the Rev. Courtney Mills. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Viewing will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home; visitation will be tonight at the home, 1139 Berry Farm Road. The Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
