Vernell Page Campbell

MARIETTA, N.C. -- Mrs. Vernell Page Campbell, 71, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001 at a local nursing home after an illness.

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 at Bear Swamp Baptist Church, Lake View. Burial will be in church cemetery directed by Cook Funeral Home of Lake View.

Mrs. Campbell was born in Robeson County, N.C., the daughter of late Gordon and Kittie Adams Page. She was a member of Bear Swamp Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Mr. John D. Campbell Sr. of the home; a son, Mr. John D. "Danny" Campbell Jr. and his wife Cecilia of Marietta, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Donna Campbell Harbour and husband Hal of Lowgap, N.C., and Mrs. Janice Campbell Walters and husband Dee of West End, N.C.; and two granddaughters, Leslie Walters and Deena Walters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bear Swamp Building Fund.

Donald Francis Jones

LAKE CITY -- Mr. Donald Francis Jones, 51, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001.

Mr. Jones was born in Lake City, a son of Donald Felix Jones and Barbara Rush. He was a graduate of McClenaghan High School and Coastal Carolina University. He attended Lake City First Baptist Church and was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Donald and Nancy Jones of Olanta; his mother, Barbara Rush of Florence; a sister, Beverly Ruth Jones of Columbia; and a brother, Rev. Gary Nelson Jones of Charleston. He was predeceased by his wife, Julie Preston Jones, and a son, Eli Francis Jones.

Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 in Mt. Hope cemetery in Florence.

Memorials may be made to Lake City First Baptist Church Building Fund, 110 S. Church St., Lake City, S.C. 29560.

The family will have visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Viola Williamson

MARION -- Mrs. Viola Williamson, 67, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 at Marion County Medical Center. born in Horry County the daughter of the late Boyd and Nellie Logan McCracken. She was a member of Marion Church of God.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Wade H. Williamson Sr.; three sons, Wade H. "Rocky" Williamson Jr. and his wife Jeannie of Florence, Richard A. "Ricky" Williamson of Summerville, David R. Williamson and his wife Susan of Greenwood; three daughters, Wanda F. Graham and her husband Ed of Florence, Bobbie J. Johnson and her husband Earl of Marion, Teresa W. Lee and her husband Allen of Little River; four sisters, Dorothy Driggers and her husband Bill of Summerville, Hazel Green and her husband Walter of James Island, Juanita Cantey of Charleston and Nancy Peterson of Summerville; three brothers, Lloyd McCracken and his wife Kathy of James Island, Bruce McCracken and his wife Betty Jo, and Alpha McCracken, all of Johns Island; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Smith-Collins Funeral Home in Marion and funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10 at Marion Church of God with the Rev. Allan Black officiating. Burial will follow in Devotion Gardens in Marion.

Lee Funeral Home of Little River/North Myrtle Beach is in charge of arrangements.

Jennie G. Little

JOHNSONVILLE -- Jennie G. Little, 90, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 6, 2001 at Commander Nursing Center in Florence. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Johnsonville United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the family residence after the memorial services.

Mrs. Little was born Feb. 20, 1911. She was a wife of the late Edward L. Little. She was a homemaker, secretary and a bookkeeper. She was a member of her garden club, library board and city beautification committee.

She is survived by her three sons, Alan (Esta) Little, William (Mary-Jane) Little, and Douglas (Debbie) Little; four grandsons; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

Charles Harvey 'Chuck' Holladay Jr.

CHESTER -- Mr. Charles Harvey "Chuck" Holladay Jr., 54, of 1110 Dogwood Lane and husband of Anne (Bouknight) Holladay, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 at Chester County Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10 at Purity Presbyterian Church. Interment will be 3 p.m. Monday in Sumter cemetery. The Rev. Marc Mason will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Barron Funeral Home, Chester and from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Monday at Bullock Funeral Home, Sumter.

Mr. Holladay was born Sept. 8, 1947 in Sumter to the late Charles H. Holladay Sr. and Doris (Farabow) Holladay. He was a 1965 graduate of Edmonds High School, Sumter. He earned his bachelor of science in civil engineering from Clemson University in 1971. He played the clarinet in the Clemson Tiger Band for five years and Concert Band and was a member of the Sentimental Jazzmen Ensemble. He was a member of Mu Beta Psi Honorary Musical Fraternity and was certified as a Professional Engineer in 1977 by South Carolina State Board of Engineers Examiners.

Mr. Holladay began working for the South Carolina Department of Transportation as a summer employee for two years while in Clemson. He was a Civil Engineer Trainee in Bennettsville and was hired full-time, August 1971. He became an Associate Resident Construction Engineer in Marlboro County, July 1972; a Resident Maintenance Engineer in Marlboro County, July 1977; a District 5 Maintenance Engineer, July 1979; and District 4 Engineering Administrator, July 1983. He was a member of South Carolina Employees Credit Union Board. He retired Oct. 23, 2001.

Mr. Holladay earned the God and County Badge, Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. He was president of Bennettsville Jaycees; served on the Bennettsville Library Board of Directors; and was a board member of Marlboro Players and acted in shows like "The Night of January 16th (Regan) ", "Merry Wives of Windsor (the Doctor) " and "Oklahoma (the Judge) ." He also was a board member of Florence Little Theatre and Chester Little Theatre, where he was the technical director for many shows and had leading roles in such plays as "Mr. Roberts (Captain) ", "Oliver (Bill Sikes) " and "1776 (Richard Henry Lee) ." He was president of Chester Little Theatre; director of Rotary; a member of Chester County Sacred Music Ensemble, Chester Community Chorus, York County Choral Society, Executive Commission for Chester County Boy Scouts of America and a board member of the State Employees Credit Union.

Mr. Holladay was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Clio from 1973 to 1979; member of the Board of Directors of Trinity Methodist Church; choir member; and sponsor of Trinity Youth Group. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Florence, choir member and soloist from 1979 to 1987. He had been a member of Purity Presbyterian Church since 1983, where he served on the Board of Deacons, was an Ordained Elder of the Church and an Adult Choir member and soloist.

Survivors include his wife, Anne (Bouknight) Holladay; a son, James S. "Jim" Holladay of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Erin M. Holladay of Florence; mother, Doris F. Holladay of Greenville; first cousin with whom he was reared, Bill Catherine of Galletin, Tenn.; and an aunt, Caroline Holladay of Florence.

Memorials may be made to Purity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 278, Chester, S.C. 29706 or American Cancer Society Southeast Division, Inc., 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.

Rebecca Morris

SCRANTON -- Mrs. Rebecca Morris, 86, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 in a Lake City nursing home after an illness. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Thomas cemetery.

born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Muldrow McElveen and Lula Oliver McElveen. Mrs. Morris was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucious David Morris, and a son, Lucious David Morris Jr.

Surviving are two daughters, Janis Morris Locklair and Judy Morris Martin, both of Scranton; three sons, Hagood Morris of Timmonsville, Chesley Morris of Lake View and Carlisle Morris of Stoneville, N.C.; three sisters, Pauline Gaymon of Scranton, Maggie Gaymon of Sumter and Willa Dean Lynch of Florence; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Helen Foster Spoonts

HILTON HEAD -- Helen Foster Spoonts died Dec. 5, 2001 of leukemia at her Hilton Head Island home.

born in Timmonsville to Dr. Ralph and Kate Foster, Mrs. Spoonts was raised in Columbia. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1941 and worked with the State Record newspaper in Columbia. She was a member of the Junior League of Columbia. There she met and married her husband, Marshall A. Spoonts, an Army Air Corps B-25 flight instructor from Ft. Worth, Texas.

After the war, they returned to South Carolina and lived in Timmonsville and Florence. In addition to her most important work, raising her children, Mrs. Spoonts worked for C&S; National Bank. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, but her life was transformed in 1970, through a Lay Renewal at First Presbyterian Church when she committed her life to Jesus Christ. Her new life of faith had an enormous impact on the lives of her family and friends. She became very involved in Lay Renewal work, Bible studies and children's ministries.

Widowed in 1990, she moved to Hilton Head in 1994 to be near her daughter and joined Providence Presbyterian Church. She was active in her church and in Community Bible Study. She is survived by her children, Rhetta Yount of Hilton Head, Katherine Hogye of Burke, Va., Trent Langhorne of Coral Gables, Fla.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 11 on Hilton Head at Providence Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the church. There will also be a memorial service in Florence at 11 a.m., on Dec. 15 at First Presbyterian Church. Memorial gifts may be sent to either Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head, S.C. 29928, First Presbyterian Church, 700 Park Avenue, Florence, S.C. 29501 or Thornwell Home for Children, P.O. Box 60, Clinton, S.C. 29325.

William Marshall O'Cain Sr.

LEXINGTON -- Services for William Marshall O'Cain Sr., 76, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Red Bank United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. James Harper, with burial at Lexington Memorial cemetery. Memorials may be made to Red Bank United Methodist Church and the Midlands Alzheimer's Association. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mr. O'Cain died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001. born in Gastonia, N.C., he was a son of the late Edward Jenkins and Louise Tarlton O'Cain. He was a resident here since 1938 and was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church. Mr. O'Cain was retired from C.C. McGregor and Company. He was a life member of the Columbia Masonic Lodge, a former member of the Columbia Country Club and the Richland Sertoma Club. He was a charter member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church and was a longtime member of the Gamecock Club. Mr. O'Cain was a U.S. Navy veteran with service during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy J. O'Cain of Lexington; his daughter, Maureen O. Reese of Lexington; his sons, William M. O'Cain Jr. of Leesville, and Patrick M. O'Cain of Chapin; his brothers, Edward T. O'Cain of Lexington, and Donald S. O'Cain of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Jessie Howard Richardson

HEMINGWAY -- Jessie Howard Richardson, 88, widow of Joe C. Richardson, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 in a Georgetown nursing center.

Mrs. Richardson was born in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late John Thomas Howard and the late Nellie Avant Howard. She was a homemaker, a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, a member of Young at Heart, Senior Bible Study Group, Senior Adult Sunday School Class and taught Sunday school for many years at the church. She was a member of the Hemingway chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 156, a graduate of Union High School and attended Coker College.

Surviving are three daughters, Bettie (Berry) Owens of Johnsonville, Nellie Jo Cribb and Tommie Anne (Johnny) Ard, both of Hemingway; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., today.

Perry 'Buddy' Samuel

TIMMONSVILLE -- Funeral services for Mr. Perry "Buddy" Samuel will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 at New Zion Baptist Church No. 1, Sardis, Rev. I.J. Myers pastor. Directed by Bowman's Funeral Home. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Samuel was born on Jan. 21, 1962 to the late Mr. Wilbert and Mrs. Feola Samuel. He departed this life on Dec. 5 at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

He was educated in the public schools of Timmonsville. He worked at Pepsi Cola of Florence for seven years.

He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Mrs. Feola James Samuel; a daughter, Miss Kimberly Samuel; four sisters, Mrs. Rodella (Frank) Pigett of Timmonsville, Miss Lissie Mae Samuel of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Lillie Mae (Clarence) Joe of Timmonsville, Mrs. Mary Lucille (Lawerence) McElveen of Olanta; four brothers, Mr. Lucious (Maratha) Samuel of Florence, Mr. Johnny Samuel of Savannah Grove, Mr. Leo (Hye-Chu) Samuel of Boise, Idaho and Mr. Andrew (Jennifer) Samuel of Timmonsville; five aunts; two uncles; a special friend, Miss Rebecca Sparks of Timmonsville; a host of nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. Clarence and Lillie Mae Joe, Joe's Lane 514 Darlington St., Timmonsville.

James Lee Benjamin

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mr. James Lee Benjamin will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the C.H. Timmons Memorial Chapel of Peoples Funeral Service. Burial will be in Northview cemetery.

Mr. Benjamin died Sunday Dec. 8, 2001.

He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Pleasant and Ruby Benjamin. He was employed as a truck driver.

Survivors include a devoted friend, Mary Lee Jenkins; four daughters, Betty Jean (Ernest) Scipio, Wilhelmina Robinson, Mary (Melvin) Singletary and Minnie Myers, all of Florence; two sons, Frank Jenkins and George Jenkins of Florence; a sister, Peggy Muldrow of Florence and 17 grandchildren.

Joseph Kelly Fields Sr.

DARLINGTON -- Funeral services for Mr. Joseph Kelly Fields Sr. will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001 in Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Melvin Mack, officiating, and Rev. Dr. D.L. Hughes, pastor. Burial will follow in the Darlington Memorial cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington.

Mr. Fields died on Friday, Dec. 7 in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late Columbus and Caroline Kelly Fields.

He attended the Darlington County public schools. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon and a member of the senior choir. He was employed by Nucor Steel of Darlington from which he retired in 1992. He later was employed by the Darlington County School District as a Custodian.

Survivors include his loving wife, Emma Rena Williams Fields of the home; four children, Joseph Fields Jr., of Washington, D.C., Carolyn F. (Rev. Johnny) Bush of Stamford, CT, Jerry (Jennifer) Fields of Effingham and Katina Fields of Columbia; grandchildren, Jimmy, Markee, Jenay, Joseph, Justice, JaDira, Jeffrey and Henry; a special uncle, Rev. James W. (Celia) Kelly of Darlington; aunts, Andrena Murray of Queensville, N.Y., Dellie Jones of Darlington, Eugenia Freeman of Newark, N.J.; brothers in law; sisters-in-law; godchildren, Frances (Ben) Muhammed, Dasia Gee; godmother, Ethel Davis and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 102 Whit Street, Darlington.

Thomas Pace

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral service for Thomas Pace, 93, who died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 will be at 7 p.m. today from the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate. Entombment will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14 at Westview Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Pace was born in Salyersdille, Ky., a son of the late John J. and Molly Bailey Pace. He was retired from the Orchid Business.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Goodson Pace of Hartsville; three daughters, Judy Paysemo of Port Orchid, Wash., Sue Van Winkle of Wanatchee, Wash., and Margery Tibeau of Winlock, Wash.; three stepdaughters, Zeta Johnson and Delene Campbell, both of Hartsville, and Jean Bristow of Greenville; a grandchild, Brandy Clark of Kent, Wash.; five step-grandchildren, Bryan Campbell and Vickie King of Hartsville, Susan Campbell of Rock Hill, Denise Owen, Easley and Mark Johnson of Raleigh.

Leroy James Jr.

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Mr. Leroy James, Jr. will be 2:30 Friday at Savannah Grove Baptist Church in Effingham. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. He died on November 24, 2001.

born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Leroy James, Sr. and Jessie Mae James.

Survivors besides his parents are: his wife Sandra M. James; mother-in-law, Golie Hill; father-in-law, Samuel Hill; step-grandmother, Mary Lee Burgess, seven aunts, Catherine (Alton) Staggers; Mable B. Jefferson; Rosa Lee (Theodore) Robinson; Atlas James; and Eliza James; Aleathea (John) Alston; Mary Ann Burgess; five uncles, Jesse (Virginia) Burgess, Leonas (Binkie) Burgess; James Wallace (Alberta) Burgess; Joe (Ida) Burgess, Sr. and John William James; one god-sister and two god-brothers.
