Flossie Maddox
GREENWOOD — Flossie Miller Maddox, 90, of 209 Folly Farm Road, widow of Argus Holmes Maddox, died Aug. 5, 2001, at her home.
born in Aiken County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Lula Miller Miller. She retired from Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant, where she was a member of the Quarter Century Club. She was a member of South Greenwood Flower Club, Callie Self Memorial Baptist Church and the Ladies Bible Class of the church.
Survivors include a son, Craig Miller Maddox of Spartanburg; a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Jacquelyn) Burton of Greenwood; a granddaughter with whom she made her home, Mrs. Gene (Adonnis) Ouzts; six other grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 Tuesday at Harley Funeral Home by the Rev. Leland S. Scott. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are John Akins, Josh Kirby, Tim Biagotti, Jade Stalnaker, J.D. Smith, Dewey McClain and Doug Shannon.
Honorary escorts are Frank and Mildred Witt, Annie Mae James, Audrey Duncan, Virginia Putnam and Lori Akins.
Visitation is from 2-3 Tuesday at the funeral home.

HODGES — Gladys Holsonback Winton, 82, of 134 Albatross Road, wife of Robert Keith Winton, died Aug. 3, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
born in McCormick County, she was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a sister, Mildred Nunn of Wagener; and a brother, Derrick Holsonback of Newton, Miss.
Memorials may be made to the V.F.W.

Abigail Elizabeth Zook
ABBEVILLE — Abigail Elizabeth Zook, infant daughter of Paul and Miriam Zook, died Aug. 4, 2001.
Survivors include her parents of the home; two brothers, Machael Ethan Zook and Patrick Andrew Zook, both of the home; and paternal grandparents, Amos and Linda Zook of Gap, Pa.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday in Cold Springs Mennonite Church cemetery by Pastor Merl Beiler.
Harris Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Claude Duane Berry
SALUDA — Claude Duane Berry, 77, husband of Elizabeth Garrett Berry, died Aug. 2, 2001.
born in Saluda, he was a son of the late Claude L. and Keturah Berry. He was a member of Richland Springs Baptist Church, a World War II veteran and a member of American Legion Post 65 and the Cattleman’s Association.
Survivors include his wife of Saluda; a son, Michael Duane Berry of Saluda; a sister, Frances Feaster of Saluda; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 today at Richland Springs Baptist Church, with burial in Saluda Memorial Gardens.
Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Mamie Childs
GREENWOOD — Mamie ‘Tit’ Childs, 75, of 208 Wesley Commons, formerly of 919 Taggart St., died Aug. 4, 2001.
born in McCormick County, she was the daughter of the late Lannie Childs and Mattie Drennon Childs Belcher. She was a member of Glovers Chapel Baptist Church and Women’s Aid Society No. 77.
Survivors include a son, James W. Childs of Greenwood; a daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Mildred) Thomas of Greenwood; a stepsister, Lizzie Belcher of Greenwood; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Elder & Mrs. Andrew Thomas, 919 Taggart St.
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home, which is in charge.

James W. ‘Bill’ Hilley
CALHOUN FALLS — James William “Bill” Hilley, 70, of 104 Carl St., husband of Rachel Bridges Hilley, died Aug. 4, 2001, at his home.
born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Waymon A. and Hattie Childs Hilley. He was a retired weaver in the textile industry, a member of Lowndesville Pentecostal Holiness Church, and an honorably discharged Korean War Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; and a brother, Thomas Hilley of Calhoun Falls.
Services will be conducted Monday at 2 at Lowndesville Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Scotty R. Willoughby. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Calhoun Falls Funeral Home.

Bob McAlister Jr.
CALLISON — Julian Robert “Bob” McAlister Jr., 72, husband of Maggie “Scottie” Hollingsworth McAlister, died Aug. 3, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Julian R. McAlister Sr. and Ida Lee Rush McAlister. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School, a World War II Navy veteran and a retiree of Tom Houston Peanut Co. He was a member of the Omar Temple Shriners and the American Legion and attended Rehoboth United Methodist Church and Bethel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Donnie (Margaret) Whitt and Mrs. Frank (Ann) Workman, both of Greenwood; two sons, Julian Robert “Rob” McAlister III of Callison and Arthur Scott “Art” McAlister of Greenville; two sisters, Mrs. Russell Brinson of Weaverville, N.C., and Mrs. J.B. McKinney of Greenwood; eight grandchildren.
Graveside services are at 3:30 Monday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Joseph L. Curtis.
Pallbearers are David Whitt, Clark McAlister, Will McAlister, Madison Workman, Tanner Workman and Bill Hollingsworth.
Honorary escorts are Dr. O.M. Cobb, Dr. William Holloway, Dr. Richard Hobson, Jimmy O’Bryant, Joe Dan Elliott, Jack Martin, J.P. Cook, Andrew Cook and Hoyt Hembree.

Carrye Mae Ross
GREENWOOD — Carrye Mae Ross, of 518 Marion Ave., died Aug. 2, 2001, at Laurens County Hospital in Clinton.
born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Carrie Sales Ross. She was educated in Greenwood County schools and graduated from North Carolina A&T University. She taught in Greenwood public schools for more than 40 years. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, West Side Community Club No. 1, Club Renaissance, the Negro Business and Professional Women, and a charter member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
She was the last member of her immediate family. Survivors include a niece and nephew reared in the home, Barbara Copeland of Clinton and John R. Susewell of Amityville, N.Y., and a cousin reared in the home, Lucius Ross of Laurel, Md.
An Omega Omega service of Delta Sigma Theta will be conducted at Parks Funeral Home tonight, beginning at 6.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie S. Harrison. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are deacons and trustees of the church.
Flower bearers are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Will Smith
CROSS HILL — Will Irby Smith, 77, of 22 Smith Irwin Road, husband of Lois Parkman Smith, died Aug. 3, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta.
born in Cross Hill, he was a son of the late Willie Stepp and Dollie Mae Cole Smith. He was a graduate of Cross Hill High School and a World War II Army veteran. He retired from Solutia Inc. (formerly Monsanto), Greenwood. A member of First Baptist Church of Cross Hill and the Men’s Bible Class of the church, he formerly served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday School superintendent, church treasurer and deacon. He was also a member and past Worshipful Master of Cross Hill Masonic Lodge 159 and was past District Deputy Grandmaster of the 13th District. He was a member of the James B. Parrott Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Clinton, and a member of the Laurens Cattleman’s Association.
Survivors include his wife of the home; and three sisters, Mrs. Ollie (Doris) Irwin of Clinton, Mrs. Mike (Agnes) Long of Milton, Fla., and Mrs. Charles (Elaine) Surrett of Ninety Six.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Cross Hill by the Revs. Phillip Wade and Tim Thompson. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Pallbearers are Larry Wash, Chuck Wells, William Ira Parkman, Robbie Parkman, Mark Parkman and Doug Dilleshaw.
Honorary escorts are members of Masonic Lodge 159, the Men’s Bible Class of the church, along with Bill Noble, Tom Ates, Harvey Foster and Jim Owings.

Eva Timms
NINETY SIX — Eva Elizabeth Shirley Timms, 78, formerly of 125 Duke St., Ninety Six and Miller Road, Hodges, widow of James Woodrow Timms, Sr., died August 3, 2001, at Wesley Commons, Greenwood.
born November 15, 1922, in Abbeville County, she was the daughter of the late Dewitt Stewart and Ola Jane Johnson Shirley. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to everyone who knew her.
She was retired from Mount Vernon Mills (Riegel), Ware Shoals, and a former employee of Huggins Garment Plant, Due West. She was a faithful member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, the Bethany Sunday School Class and the Golden Agers of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Surviving is a son, James W. Timms, Jr. (J.W.) and daughter-in-law, Becky of Ninety Six; a grandson, James Richard Timms (Ricky) and his wife, Kimberly of Ninety Six; a granddaughter, Amy Rebecca Timms Shaw and her husband, David of Baytown, TX; two great-grandchildren, Jacob David Shaw of Baytown, TX and Kate Elizabeth Timms of Ninety Six; three sisters, Daucey (Doll) Gambrell of Fountain Inn, Cleo Cooley of Lincolnton, GA and Mary Lindsay of Honea Path; two brothers Fred Shirley of Taylors and Larry Shirley of Donalds. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Woodrow Timms, Sr., July 29, 1987; a son, Larry Monroe Timms, December 16, 1946; two sisters, Effie Bratcher and Edith Freeman; two brothers, W. Harrison Shirley and D.S. Shirley, Jr.
Services will be at 3:00 PM Monday, Walnut Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend Rodney Jeanes officiating. Burial will be at Providence cemetery, Hodges. The body will be placed in the church at 2:00 PM.
Pallbearers: Rick Timms, David Shaw, Tommy Balchin, Lindsey Burnett, Oscar Burnett, Jr., and Keith Butler, Truman Gambrell, Wayne Lindsay.
