Sadie Mae Hemphill
BLACKSBURG – Services for Sadie Mae Hemphill, 41, of 109 Whisonant St., will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Youngs Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Larry J. Brooks and the Revs. George Kirby and Michael Hull. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
The family is at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Richard W. and Katherine Hemphill, 107 Bunche St., Gaffney.

Stuart J. Ballantyne
Retired funeral director
Stuart Jenks Ballantyne, 74, of 350 Buck Shoals Road, died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Ware, Mass., he was the husband of Margaret Diane Ivey Ballantyne and son of the late Aubrey Elvington Ballantyne and the late Ruth Ailene Jenks Ballantyne. He was a retired funeral director and U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Covenant Christian Center.
Surviving are his wife, Diane Ivey Ballantyne of the home; three daughters, Sandra Ballantyne of New York, Nancy Kleinfeld of Brielle, N.J.; and Beth Wells and husband, David, of Gaffney; two sons, Keith Ballantyne of Columbus, Kansas and Scot Ballantyne of Tampa, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held today at 6 p.m. at Covenant Christian Center, conducted by the Rev. Jim McClure.
Memorials may be made to Covenant Christian Center, 500 Peachoid Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29341.
The family is at the home.

Lois C. Childers
Gaffney native
Lois Melissa Cooksey Childers, 86, of 197 W. Flint St., Lake Orion, Mich., died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at her residence.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Jerry Mabeus and daughter of the late Neil E. Cooksey and the late Dollie Irene Huskey Cooksey.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mrs. Childers was a waitress at Sheldon’s Restaurant in Lake Orion, where she also specialized in pastry baking. She was first married to the late Carl Childers and attended Lake Orion United Methodist Church. She loved life dearly, had a great will to live and strength of character, and always overcame hardships. She was a loving and devoted mother, had a faith and trust in the saving grace of the Lord, and left peacefully in her sleep to be with Him.
Surviving are a son, Jim Childers of Lake Orion, Mich.; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Reba Cooksey of Gaffney; sister and brother-in-law, Leoma C. and Robert L. Griffin of Gaffney; and numbers nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Childers was preceded in death by three brothers, Horace Cooksey, Charlie E. Cooksey and Perry N. Cooksey; and one sister, Cornelia Cooksey Moorehead.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Brian Harris. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Clary, Matt Clary, Mark Clary, Toby Cooper, Michael Murray and Richard Cooksey.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Ron and Dot Clary, 1984 Love Springs Road, Gaffney.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Hugh E. Price
Texas native
SPARTANBURG – Hugh Exum Price, 60, of 1705 Skylyn Drive, died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Tyler, Texas, he was the son of the late David Morgan Price and the late Flora Louise Exum Price. He was a restaurant worker in the food industry and was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are a brother, Morgan Price of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister, Martha Price of Amarillo, Texas.
Also surviving are good friends, Mal Ready and Peter Imondi, both of Gaffney.
There will be a private cremation. Mr. Price’s cremains will be interred in the family cemetery plot in Amarillo, Texas.
Family members are at their homes in Texas.

Bobbie G. Leagon
Retired textile worker
BLACKSBURG – Bobbie Jean Graham Leagon, 65, of 193 Ross Road, died Friday, June 11, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
A native of Walhalla, she was the wife of Junior Leagon and daughter of the late Jessie Graham and the late Mollie Alma Frady Graham. She was a retired textile worker and member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a son, Steven McKinley Leagon of Kings Creek; four daughters, Deborah Ann Leagon Hamrick of Blacksburg, Teresa Kay Leagon Harward of York, Tonya Yvonne Leagon Deaton of Shelby and Wendy Michelle Leagon of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Onnie Long of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Charles Graham of Gaffney and Lawrence Graham of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Barnard. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were George Moss, Steve Moss, Danny Ham, Butch Kale, Ronnie Patterson, Mike Patterson and Eddie Upchurch.
The family is at the home.

Marjorie H. Padgett
Cherokee County native
Marjorie H. Padgett, 75, of Huntersville, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 10, 2004, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Cherokee County, S.C., to the late Wilbert and Lennie Hammett. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Charlotte, but had attended Ramah Presbyterian Church in Huntersville for the past eight years. She was a devoted wife and mother.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Padgett was preceded in death by her son, Alan Augustus Padgett.
She is survived by her husband, William Augustus Padgett; son, Clayton L. Padgett and wife, Lisa, of Raleigh; daughters, Janet P. Ashley of Charlotte and Jane P. Brotherton and husband, Stephen, of Huntersville; brothers, Glenn Hammett and wife, Lillie, of Gaffney, Forrest Hammett and wife, Katie, of Piedmont, Maynard Hammett and wife, Madeline, of Gaffney and Robert Hammett and wife, Brenda, of Gaffney; sisters, Billie Welch and husband, Hobert, of Charlotte, Annie Ruppe and husband, Marshall, of Charlotte and Mary Brown and husband, Ralph, of Thomasville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ramah Presbyterian Church with Rev. Phil Hargrove officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn West.

The family wishes to thank all of the friends who have supported them during her illness. They also want to thank Hospice of Charlotte for their aid and respectful care.
The children would like to thank their mom for teaching them, loving them, and guiding them towards God.

Mary W. Quinn
Member of UDC, DAR
Mary Ingram Williams Quinn, 87, of 500 Cramer Mountain Road, Cramerton, N.C., died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Carillon Assisted Living in Cramerton.
A native of Heath Springs, S.C., she was the widow of Raeford E. Quinn and daughter of the late James Alexander Williams and the late Rosetta Ingram Williams. She was a homemaker and longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Gaffney. She was a former resident of Heath Springs and Gaffney and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Rayford E. Quinn and wife, Annette B. Quinn, of Cramerton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Williams of Heath Springs.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by Virginia Robertson, Ester Vaughn, Ruby Williams, Nell Curtis, Ruth Williams, Curtis Williams and Wilbur Williams.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by Father Gordon Hamilton, pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation. Visitation will be held at the funeral home following the service. Burial will be private.
Family members are at their respective homes.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund, Church of the Incarnation, 308 College Dr., Gaffney, S.C. 29340; or Alzheimer’s Association, 110 S. Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.

James H. Moore
Retired rural mail carrier
CHEROKEE SPRINGS – James Harrell Moore, 80, of 452 Ware Road, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at his home.
A native of Spartanburg County, he was the husband of Shalmir Easler Moore and son of the late E.W. and Annie Easler Moore. He was a 1941 graduate of Spartanburg High School and was a retired rural mail carrier.
He was a lifetime member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon. He was a member of Cherokee Masonic Lodge 135, a former member of the District 2 Board of Trustees and a member of the County Board of Education. He was an avid fisherman.
Also surviving are a daughter, Sandra Brown of Cherokee Springs; a son, Jimmy Moore of Cherokee Springs; a sister, Ruth M. Wood of Cherokee Springs; two brothers, George W. Moore and Geddes N. Moore, both of Cherokee Springs; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eggers Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Fred Quidley. Burial was in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Allen Knight, Alan Moore, Tim Harris, Jimmy Jones, James Elder, Gil Agnew, Johnny Moore and Tony Drake.
Memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Building Fund, 635 Mount Pleasant Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29307.

Mabel H. Carter
Harris, N.C., native
Mabel Harris Carter went home to be with her Lord on June 10, 2004.
Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 17, 1910, in Harris, N.C. Her parents were the late William G. Harris and Epsie Lattimore Harris. Her loving husband was the late Virgil E. Carter of Gaffney.
Mrs. Carter was a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church in Gaffney.
She is survived by one son, Robert L. Carter, and wife, Becky, of Greenville, S.C.; four daughters, Mary McRae of Spartanburg, Margaret Rossa and husband, Fred, of Englewood, Fla., Susan McFadden and husband, Don, of Fort Lawn, S.C., and Jean Raborn and husband, Murray, of Charlotte, N.C. There are nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Sunday from 1-1:45 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and the funeral, conducted by the Rev. David Swicegood, followed at 2 p.m. in chapel at the funeral home. Burial was in the Carter family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Carter’s grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her memory to Buford Street United Methodist Church, 120 E. Buford St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340
