M. VIRGINIA BRUNER
SUMMERTON - Mary Virginia Beatty Bruner, 66, wife of James Edward Bruner Sr., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Regency Hospital in Florence.
Born Sept. 26, 1936, in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Guy P. and Virginia King Beatty Sr. She was a retired secretary and bookkeeper from Bruner’s of Orangeburg. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, a graduate and valedictorian of Cross High School, attended Columbia College, was former assistant vice president and personnel director of First National Bank in Orangeburg, former executive secretary of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association, former member of the SC Banker’s Association, former member of the Pilot Club of Orangeburg, and former member of the Cosmopolitan Club of Sumter.
Surviving besides her husband of Summerton are a son, Jay Bruner and wife, Angie, of Summerton; a granddaughter, Abbie Bruner of Summerton; two half-sisters, Jacqueline Shipley of Ellicott City, Md., and Julia Lee Watkins of Eutawville. She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Guy P. Beatty Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Summerton United Methodist Church. The Revs. Armond Shealy and Mark Altman will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Will Watkins, Kenny Bilton, Johnny Bruner, Robert C. Bruner Jr., Clay Bruner and Greg Bruner.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence, 1286 Waters Edge Drive, Summerton.
Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or to Clarendon Habitat for Humanity, P. O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

MARIE J. FELDER
BISHOPVILLE - Marie J. Felder, 91, widow of Addison Felder Sr., died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville.
Born on Feb. 14, 1912, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Jenkins and Elizabeth McLeod Jenkins. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined St. John Baptist Church. After marriage, she affiliated with Benjamin Chapel AME Church and later joined Gumspring Baptist, where she served as Mother of the Church, a member of the senior choir and the missionary society. She was blessed with ten children.
Survivors include two sons, Isaiah Felder (Dianna) Felder and Dan Felder, whom she raised as her own, both of Bishopville; three daughters, Eleanor Williams of Florence, Theresa Felder and Pergess Felder of Bishopville; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five children, Thelma Benjamin, Barbara Robinson, Dessie Felder, Addison Felder Jr. and Robert Felder.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Gumspring Baptist Church with the Rev. Aaron Spencer Davis officiating assisted by the Rev. Elijah Sutton.
Burial will be in Corbett Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and floral bearers will be her granddaughters.
The funeral procession will leave the home at 2377 Camden Highway, Bishopville, at 12:45 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home.

T.B. HULSEY
MANNING — Tasker Bliss “Tex” Hulsey, 85, widower of Dorothy Ridgeway Hulsey, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the home of his daughter in Manning.
Born Jan. 15, 1918, in Gainesville, Ga., he was a son of the late Claude and Annie Forrester Hulsey Sr. He was a 1957 graduate of Dell Laboratory and X-ray School in Asheville and was employed by Byerly Hospital and the Hartsville Hospital. He was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran and a retired farmer and merchant. Mr. Hulsey was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Dot Josey and her husband, Keith Jr., of Manning; three brothers, Clinton Hulsey of Chattanooga, Tenn., Claude Hulsey Jr. and Jerry Hulsey of Gainesville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Keith Josey III of Biloxi, Miss., Clinton H. Josey and Dory J. Pack of Manning; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jewell Hulsey, Mildred Dilbeck and Bobbie Hulsey; and four brothers, Quinton Hulsey, Bright Hulsey, Forrester Hulsey and George K. Hulsey.
He donated his body to the Medical University of South Carolina.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1817 Old Georgetown Road, Manning.
Memorials may be made to the Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P. O. Box 299, Turbeville, SC 29162 or to Clarendon Relay for Life.

WILLIAM BRYANT Jr.
MANNING — William Bryant Jr., 53, husband of Sadie Hilton Bryant, died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 26, 1949, in Clarendon County.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy Bryant Dingle and Jimmy Dingle, 1315 Hide Out Drive, off Raccoon Road, Manning.
Services will be announced by Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

EUGENE SPACE
MANNING — Eugene Space, 74, husband of Lucile Cantey Space, died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at his residence.
He was born on Sept. 28, 1928, in Clarendon County.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1187 Bramble Road in the Jordan community, Manning.
Services will be announced by Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

SARAH ADAMS MATHIS
Sarah Adams Mathis died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at Mariner Healthcare East.
She was born in Clarendon County.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Mrs. Ruth Williams, 1119 Coard Road, Pinewood.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

EDDIE RICE
Eddie Rice, 63, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at his residence, 416 Highland Avenue.
Born Aug. 18, 1939, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie Rice and Lucille Boone Rice. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County.
Survivors include four daughters, Sheila Harris of Fayetteville, N.C., Sherwin Rice of Elizabethtown, N.C., Lenore Rice of Lumberton, N.C., and Arlene Rice of Fayetteville; one brother, Pete Rice of Newark, N.J.; and one sister, Eleanora Rhodie of Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Willie Rice.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2003, from the Barnettsville Baptist Church, St. Charles-Manville Roads, Bishopville, with the Rev. Wayne Montgomery officiating, assisted by the Revs. H.K. Phillips and Jimmy Melvin.
Burial will be in Barnettsville Baptist Churchyard Cemetery.
Pallbearers and floral bearers will be the church family.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from his home, 416 Highland Ave., Sumter.
The family will receive friends at his home.
Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID E. NEWSOME
David Edward Newsome, 41, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his home.
Born in Sumter, he was a beloved son of Donald Eugene Newsome and Jeanette Purvis Newsome.
Mr. Newsome was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was employed by Interlake Material Handling Division.
Surviving are his mother of Sumter; his father of Ashland, Ky.; a brother, Larry Newsome of Sumter; and a sister, Kathy Lemonds of Camden.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Scott Lowery officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tye Hanson, Scott Lemonds, Lester Player, Darrell Dobbs, Glen Coleman, David Croft, Van Purvis and John Kinsey.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his mother, 324 Adams Ave.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CALVIN SIMON
MIAMI — Mr. Calvin Simon died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in Miami.
Born Oct. 23, 1931, he was a son of the late Mr. A.J. Simon and Mrs. Mary Liza Lesaine Simon.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and received an honorable discharge. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Miami for 31 years.
Survivors include two sons of Miami; three daughters, two of Miami and one of Newark, N.J.; three brothers, Nathan (Diane) Simon of Sumter, Roman (Cynthia) Hilton of Timmonsville and John Henry (Edna) Simon of Manning; five sisters, Ollie Mae (Johnnie) Thompson of Manning, Ronitha (John) Kennedy, Anna (Coyie) Smith and Thelma James, all of New Haven Court, and Selma Adger of Manning; and several grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Pearlie and Lee Ernest; and three sisters, Sarah, Pauline and Lila Mae.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mount Siani FBH Church in the Bloomville community with the Rev. Theophilus Smith, the Rev. Eddie Lasaine, the Rev. Sister Dorothy Dukes and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove AME Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Ollie Mae and Johnnie Thompson, 3722 Mallett Road in the Sugar Hill community of Manning.
Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of services.

JERRY BRADSHAW
MANNING — Gerald Sage “Jerry” Bradshaw, 65, husband of Lola Tomlinson Bradshaw, died Monday, March 31, 2003, in Manning.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1452 Canterberry Drive in Manning.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

HARVIN GRANT
COLUMBIA — Harvin “Gip” Grant, 75, husband of Laura Floyd Grant of 55 years, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 1, 1928, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late William McCall and Elease Grant McCall.
He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, where he lived and resided all of his life. He worked diligently on his farm. He was also employed at Shaw Air Force Base for more than 35 years.
Survivors include seven devoted children, Rochelle Middleton-Hill of Columbia, Carrie Johnson of Sumter, Deacon Harvin G. Grant, Debbie Taylor, Ronald Grant and Roderick Grant, all of Rembert, and Earl Grant of Austin, Texas; four caring surrogate children, Ruth Martin, Charles James, Ted James and Naomi Grant; two sisters, Bertha Alston of Rembert and Wilhelmenia Lee of Columbia; eight caring half-sisters and brothers, Elder Clarence McCall and Elder Jerry McCall, both of Rembert, Herbert McCall of Dalzell, Olin McCall of Springfield, Va., Annie Lee McCall of Sumter, Azalee McCall of Rembert, Mary Singleton of Sumter, Ruby Grant Hicks of Newark, N.J., a dear cousin raised as a sister; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grant Hill Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Roosevelt E. Bennett officiating, assisted by the Rev. Durant Jenkins, the Rev. Eugene Dennis and Minister Minnie Dennis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and floral bearers will be granddaughters.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Grant Hill Baptist Church Board of Deacons.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home, 4600 Borden Road in Rembert.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

BERTHA R. BROWN
Bertha Tindal Rufus Brown, 58, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 9, 1944, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Clifton Tindal Sr. and Addie Singleton Tindal.
The family will receive at the home, 1361 Illery Road.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

VERMELL D. WATSON
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Vermell Davis Watson died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Carolina Medical Center.
She was a daughter of Corine Davis and Romeo Davis.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 60 Hillard Drive, Apt. 50, in Sumter.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

HERBERT E. RICHARDSON Jr.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Herbert E. “Red” Richardson Jr., 31, husband of Sonya L. Johnson Richardson, died Monday, March 31, 2003.
Born Dec. 9, 1971, in Nashville, he was a son of Shedrack and Virginia Williams.
Services will be held in Nashville.
The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 709 Branch St. in Sumter.
Services will be announced by Memorial Funeral Home, 902 N. 1st St., Nashville, TN 37207.
