MINISTER RODNEY D. PRINCE
COLUMBIA — Minister Rodney Dwayne Prince died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Central Carolina Rehab Center. Born Sept. 24, 1978, in Killeen, Texas, he was a son of Ronnie and Ruthie Dow Prince. He attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1996 graduate of Sumter High School, where he was a member of the student government, vice president of the Black Heritage Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering, Step Team and the Sumter High School Choir. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Gum Spring Baptist Church. He later joined Grace Cathedral, where he served diligently and faithfully until his illness. He was called into the ministry in 1995. He served as the minister of music for Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church 8 a.m., co-host for WQMC 1290, volunteer for Prison Fellowship Ministry, volunteer chaplain for Tuomey Regional Medical Center and was founder of Spirit Filled Ministries. He was formerly employed at Lakewood and Crestwood high schools, a member of the staff of Job’s Mortuary Inc. and a salesman at Rack Room Shoes. Survivors besides his father of New York and his mother of Sumter include a brother, Gary Prince of Sumter; a stepbrother, Ronnie Prince Jr. of New York; a sister, Sherika Prince of Sumter; his paternal grandparents, Willie and Stella Prince of New York; his maternal grandmother, Arie Dow of Sumter; his great-grandmothers, Emma Prince and Ida McFadden, both of Sumter; aunts, uncles and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Lee W. Dow. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Cathedral, U.S. 401, Sumter, with Supt. Sammy C. Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. O.J. Hannah, Elders Kenneth Kelly and Marlin Clemons and Minister Frederick Pressley. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Silver. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the home, 20 Sims St., Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES E. SLATER
PATERSON, N.J. — James E. Slater, 62, husband of Evelyna Williams Slater, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Paterson. Born April 18, 1938, in Sumter County, S.C., he was a son of the late James Slater and Laura Thompson Slater. Mr. Slater moved to New Jersey in 1954 and worked for United Wire and Hanger in Peterboro, N.J., for 30 years. He was a member of Bethel AME Church and a member of Teamster Union Local No. 560. Survivors besides his wife of Paterson include three sons, Charles, Ricky, and Randolph, all of Paterson; three daughters, Sheryl Williams, Michelle Williams and Selica Williams, all of Paterson; a sister, Ann Dixon of Paterson; 17 grandchildren; two uncles, four aunts and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Bishopville, S.C., with the Rev. Vernon Holland, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Barnettsville Cemetery in Bishopville. The family will receive friends at the home of his uncle, Thomas Spann, James Street, Bishopville. Square Deal Funeral Home in Bishopville, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

ROSA SMITH
SUMMERTON — Rosa “Roe” Smith, 86, died Wednesday morning, March 21, 2001, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home in Silver. Born Dec. 25, 1915, in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Richard Smith and Minnie Brunson Smith. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church. Later, she moved to Bronx, N.Y., where she lived for more than 60 years. There she joined Solomon Temple Baptist Church. When her health failed, she moved back to Summerton and reinstated her membership with Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Faye Lawson of Summerton and Earnestine Belle of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Frances Smith of Elizabethtown, N.C.; a sister, Eliza Holland of Summerton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. William T. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Malachi Duncan and the Rev. Henry Mitchell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Henry Lawson, Hill Street, Summerton. The family will receive friends at the same home. Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Summerton Funeral Service. Summerton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

ELOUISE DURANT
BISHOPVILLE — Elouise DuRant, widow of O.C. DuRant, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the home, 1127 Coopermill Road. Services will be announced by Boatwright Funeral Home.

HAZEL R. FRIERSON
Hazel Richburg Frierson, 58, wife of William C. Frierson, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an illness. Born Oct. 11, 1942, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late John Hazel Richburg and Rebecca Johnson Richburg. The family will receive friends at the home, 2723 Sandhill Drive. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

MARY DELAY
Mary Delay, widow of Moise Delay Sr., died today, April 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 14, 1917 in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Nickens and Isabella Grant Nickens. The family will receive friends at the home, 104 S. Blanding St. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

NETTIE D. KINSEY
Nettie D. Baldwin Dawson Kinsey, 82, widow of Floyd J. Kinsey, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Feb. 19, 1919, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Baldwin Sr. and Rosa Curtis Baldwin. “Nettie,” as family and friends fondly called her, grew up on the family farm and was educated in the public school system of Sumter County. In her youth, she joined High Hills Baptist Church. In 1933, she married Wallace Roland Dawson Sr., and to this union, six children were born. She later moved her church membership to Joshua Baptist Church, where her husband was a member. She and Wallace were divorced. Nettie, later formed a relationship with Floyd J. Kinsey. No children were born of this union. In 1958, she moved to Philadelphia, Pa., and joined the Morris Chapel Baptist Church family in 1961. Several years later, she moved her membership to Thankful Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending. In October 1997, she was relocated to the McCoy Memorial Center in Bishopville until she was taken to Tuomey for treatment. Survivors are two sons, Wallace Dawson Jr. of Linden, N.J., and William Dawson of Freehold, N.J.; four daughters, Rosalee Diggs of Rembert, Theola Marie Richardson of Nashville, N.C., Williemae Williams of LaGrange, Ga., and Ann D. August of Dalzell; a brother, Roosevelt Baldwin of Sumter; four sisters, Emma Baldwin-White and Catherine B. Stephens of Charlotte, N.C., Minnie Baldwin-Long of Jacksonville, Fla., Wilhelmina Baldwin-McAllister of Clovis, New Mexico; 25 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Joshua Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eugene Dennis officiating, assisted by the Revs. Willie Dennis and Roosevelt Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews. Flower bearers will be her granddaughters and nieces, with Joshua Baptist Church Missionaries as honorary flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave the home of her daughter, Rosa Lee Diggs, 4525 Dawson Road in Rembert, at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WALTER J. PATTERSON JR.
Walter James Patterson Jr., 76, husband of Henrietta Spann Patterson, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born March 30, 1925, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of the late Walter James Patterson and Emma Boyd Patterson. He received his education in the public schools of New York City and attended the Manhattan School of Music. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. He was a member of Chapel AME Church in Paxville, where he served as a member of the trustee board, pastor’s steward, president of the usher board, lay organization, building committee, drama department and was a church musician. Survivors besides his wife are two daughters, Lorraine S. Brown of Columbia and Rose Marie Yeadon of Sumter; and two brothers and four sisters of New York City; and eight grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel AME Church in Paxville, with the Rev. William Scott officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jack Dais and Rufus Gaymon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 60 Geddings Road in Sumter. Fleming DeLaine Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

MAJ. RENETTA S. ROBINSON
SUMMERVILLE — Maj. Renetta Seward Robinson, 47, wife of Bobby E. Robinson, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Ada and Willie Shefield, 1036 Stebondale Road, Columbia, after an illness. Born Nov. 15, 1953, in the Andrews community of Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of Sam Seward and the late Ada Conyers Seward. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She graduated from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., and received a master’s degree from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo. In her youth, she joined Mount Zion AME Church in the Bloomville community in Andrews. She served as president of the pastoral aide club, vice president of the women’s missionary society, member of the stewardess board, founder of the church clothing closet and founder an director of the church food pantry. She worked as a registered nurse at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She enlisted in the United States Air Force Nursing Corps for 10 years of active service. In 1992, she left active duty and entered the reserves as a nurse for the 20th fighter wing hospital at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, giving her 17 years in the military. She worked at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston as a charge nurse in the intensive care unit and as charge nurse in the operating room. She also was promoted to nurse manager of the operating room, GU clinic and sterile prep area. Survivors besides her husband include her father of Andrews; six sisters, Margaret Griffith of Teaneck, N.J., Luvenia Liggins of Akron, Ohio, Betty Sanders of Andrews, Ada Sheffield, Vervitine Thompson and Cathy Rawlinson, all of Columbia; and three brothers, Carol Seward, Thurmond Seward and Wendell Seward, all of Andrews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Samuels Funeral Home, 114 N. Church St., Manning, and other times at 231 Smithfield Ave., Summerville, and at the home of her father, Route 1, Box 131-A, Bloomville community, Thurgood Marshall Highway, S.C. 527 in Andrews. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion AME Church, Bloomville community in Andrews, with the Rev. Joe Canteen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be the Air Force Honor Guard. Flower bearers will be classmates and friends of the family. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JACQUELINE W. SIMS
REMBERT — Jacqueline “Jackie” LaVerne Wiley Sims, wife of Charles Sims, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at her home. Born July 17, 1967, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Edna Gathers Wiley and the late Benjamin Samuel Wiley Sr. She was a member of High Hill AME Church, where she was a member of the Combined Choir, the N.A. Johnsonaires, the All In The Family Singers and the Seek Ministry. She was also a class leader. She was a 1985 graduate of Hillcrest High School and studied at Central Carolina Technical College. Her career included DuPont Textile Inc., Carolina Golden Products, Anchor Continental, Primerica Life Insurance Co. and Tuomey Healthcare System. Survivors besides her husband and mother include two brothers, Benjamin S. Wiley Jr. of Kansas City, Mo., and Terry Tyrone Wiley of Sumter; a sister, Petrina Lovelle Wiley of Sumter; and her paternal grandmother, Grace Singleton of Sumter. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son, Joshua Benjamin Sims. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at High Hill AME Church in Dalzell, with the Rev. M. Charmaine Ragin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in High Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 4825 Borden Road, Rembert. The body will be placed in the church for viewing at 2 p.m. until the hour of service, and may be viewed until 9 p.m. today and until 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

LOUISE L. MEDLEY
Louise Virginia Lawson Medley, 95, widow of Robert E. Medley, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter. Born July 26, 1905, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Lawson and Emma Walker Lawson. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. In her youth, she joined Enon Baptist Church. Later in life, she moved to Roanoke, Va., where she met and married Robert E. Medley. After relocating in Sumter, she joined the Union Baptist Church in Wedgefield. Survivors include two sons, Doris Medley of Rye, N.Y., and Tommy Medley of California; a daughter, Emma Jane Tindal of Wedgefield; and a granddaughter reared in the home, Patricia Tindal; nine grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Baptist Church in Wedgefield, with the Rev. Travis S. Holmes, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Beulah cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 7800 Brohoun Camp Road in Wedgefield. James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

BETTY P. SANDERS
REMBERT — Betty Pollard Sanders, widow of James Sanders, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at her residence. Born July 3, 1945, in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of Lula Rayzor Pollard and the late Ransom Pollard. The family will receive friends at the home, 4945 Dennis Road. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

ASHBY GREEN
Ashby Green, husband of Algie Jennings Green, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 26, 1949, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Ervin Green and Mamie Alston Green. The family will receive friends at the home, 123 N. Pike West. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

HATTIE C. BILLUPS
MANNING — Hattie Canty Billups, 91, widow of Lawrence Billups Sr., died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 3, 1909, in the Jordan community, she was a daughter of the late Nettles Canty and Viola Robinson Canty. She received her formal education in the public schools in Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Union Cypress AME Church. There, she served faithfully as a member of the senior choir, steward board, women’s missionary society and YMCA Lodge No. 7. Survivors are four daughters, Margie Harris of St. Albans, N.Y., Juanita Nelson of Penllyn, Pa., Dorothy Mack of Buffalo, N.Y., and Viola Billups of the home; four sons, Robert Billups of Penllyn, Pa., John Billups and James Holly Billups, both of Roosevelt, N.Y., and Lawrence Billups Jr. of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Mary Lou Hilton of Manning; a granddaughter reared in the home, Shannon Billups; an adopted grandson, D’Encencio Griffin of Blythewood; 27 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Willie Edward Billups and Alphonza Billups. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Union Cypress AME Church in the Jordan community, with the Rev. Melissa Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Manual Fogel, Rev. W.J. Frierson and Rev. Jonathan Mouzon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. John R. Lee II, 52, husband of Deborah J. Lee, died today, April 4, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

LILLIAN W. PAYNE
Lillian Pauline Wells Payne, 90, widow of Wade Albert Payne Sr., died today, April 4, 2001, at National Healthcare Center. Born Sept. 20, 1910, she was a daughter of the late James Richard and Pauline Jennings Wells. She graduated from Sumter High School and received a registered nurse diploma from Tuomey Regional Medical Center, and an x-ray technical certificate from Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, N.C. She worked at Tuomey Regional Medical Center as head nurse in the operating room and as an x-ray technician. She also worked at the local health department and served as a clinic nurse to the outlying areas in Sumter County. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and a sister to all. She was the recipient of the first “Mother of the Year” award at Bethel Baptist Church. She was a lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church and very active in the church until she was unable to attend. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wade Albert Payne Jr. and Lila Broughton Payne of Sumter; two daughters, Mary Frances Payne McIntyre and her husband, Robert C. McIntyre, of Fairfax, Va., and Marian Ann Payne Howard of Spartanburg; a brother, John D. Wells Sr. of Amerious, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. James L. Grasty officiating. Pallbearers will be the deacons of the church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wade Albert Payne Jr., 4 Dellwood Lane. Memorials may be made to The Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 2401 Bethel Church Road, or to a missionary organization of your choice. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge the arrangements.
