MADELINE SEEGERS
Madeline Jean La Bua Seegers, 66, wife of Roy L. Seegers, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at her home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Frank La Bua and Julia Benino La Bua. Mrs. Seegers was a Catholic and a retired telephone operator with the New York Telephone Co. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two sons, Robert Dobies of New York and Lawrence DiDonato of Durham, N.Y.; two daughters, Julie Dobies of Chicago, Ill., and Donna DiDonato of Queens, N.Y.; a brother, Jack La Bua of Florida; four sisters, Rose Padavan, Barbara Buongiovanni and Catherine Kaminski, all of New York, and Loretta Seegers of Charleston; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home with visitation following until 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. William the Abbott Church in Seaford, N.Y. Burial will be in Pinelawn Cemetery in Pinelawn, N.Y. Memorials may be made to Tuomey Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 325, Sumter, SC 29151. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

SAMUEL L. SKINNER SR.
BISHOPVILLE — Samuel LeRoy “Sammie” Skinner Sr., 79, husband of Sara Watts Skinner, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Columbia. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Samuel Eugene Skinner and Edith Witherspoon Skinner. Mr. Skinner was retired from the S.C. Highway Department. He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include two sons, George B. Skinner and Roy Skinner; four daughters, Betty Kelley, Kathy Kelehear, Martha McDonald and Jean Moree; a brother, Bobby Skinner; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

ROSA G. TURNER
SUMMERTON — Rosa Gibson Turner died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, N.Y. Born May 2, 1952, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William “Bill” Gibson and Susie Jackson Gibson. Mrs. Turner attended Scott’s Branch High School. She accepted Christ as her savior years ago and joined Worth AME Church while living in New York. Survivors include her husband, Gerald Turner Sr. of Bronx; a son, Gerald Turner Jr. of Bronx; four brothers, William “Bill” Gibson Jr. of Manning, Thomas Gibson of Bronx and Heyward Bennett and John Bennett, both of Richmond, Va.; 10 sisters, Carolyn Ragin and Shirley Robinson, both of Summerton, Marian Johnson and Julia Andrew, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Susie Mae Oree and Susie Gibson, both of Bronx, Prophet Fran McFadden of Tucker, Ga., Herline Alston of Pinewood, Daisy McFadden of Baltimore, Md., and Daisy Guess of Lehigh, Fla. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the chapel of King Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Earnest Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home on Mazyck and Short streets. King Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

IDA G. RHAME
Ida Green Rhame, 88, widow or Churmie Rhame, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Hopewell Nursing Home. Born October 3, 1912 in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Octovia Canty Green. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, she attended New Hope AME Church from early in life. After moving to Sumter, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and a member of both the gospel choir and the Missionary Society. Survivors include two sons, Churmie Rhame Jr., of Sumter and Samuel L. Rhame Sr., of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Dorothy Pratt of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and an adopted daughter, Emma Ruth Wells of Sumter. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, and minister Sheila Murray officiating. They will be assisted by the Rev. Larry C. Weston, minister Ricky Simmons and minister Irene Anthony. Burial will be in the Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be friends of the family. Flower bearers will be the Silver Leaf chapter #333 of the Order of the Eastern Stars. The funeral procession will leave the home at 623 South Main Street in Sumter, where the family will receive friends. Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert E. “Pete” McCathern died Friday, April 20, 2001, at his home. Services will be announced by the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

MARY A. RESTIVO
FAYETTEVILLE, GA — Mary A. Restivo, 93, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Fayetteville Community Hospital in Fayetteville, Ga. Born in Brookhaven, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Jack Leggitt. She was formerly employed by the Diana Shop in Sumter. She was twice married, first to the late Alex M. Smith Sr., and later to the late Anthony Restivo. Surviving are one son, Alex Mosley Smith Jr., of Fayetteville, Ga., and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Marion Floyd Smith. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Comer officiating. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

SADIE H. SCOTT
Sadie Hopkins Scott, 81, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at her home. Born in Sumter County on July 30, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Peggy Taylor Hopkins. The family will receive friends at the family home at 34 Carolina Ave. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

ANNA M. COLLINS
Anna Margaret Collins, 93, wife of the late John Maynard Collins, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Greenville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Zula Shirley Maddy. She was a graduate of Radford College in Radford, Va., and taught in the Raleigh County School system for 26 years, much of the time at Shady Springs High School in Beaver, W. Va. She was a member of the Beckley Methodist Temple, and an active member of its circle club. She was an accomplished pianist and provided music for many of the Sunday School classes. She attended Aldersgate Methodist Church in Sumter and was also active in the Christian Woman’s Club. Survivors include a son, Stephen Edward Collins of Sumter. She was in preceded in death by her husband and a son, Franklin Maynard Collins. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Victor Cheek officiating. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2001, in the Sunset Cemetery in Beckley, W.Va. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

ROBERT E. MCCATHERN
Robert Elvin “Pete” McCathern, 59, husband of Mary Ann Anderson McCathern, died Friday, April 20, 2001 at his home. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Kervin McCathern and Elizabeth White McCathern. He was employed by Korn Industries. Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Robbie Elvin McCathern and Terry Lynn McCathern, both of Sumter; a daughter, Sandra Marie Baird of Sumter; seven brothers, William McCathern, Vernon McCathern and Herbert McCathern, all of Bishopville, Harold McCathern and Ronnie McCathern of Cassatt, Don McCathern of Lugoff, and Frank McCathern of Live Oak, Fla.; two sisters, Lela Mae Hough and Shirley Privette, both of Cassatt; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Carnell Floyd and the Rev. Buddy Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery in Bishopville. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1451 Paul St. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

SUSAN B. HEIKKILA
Susan B. Heikkila, 92, widow of Emil William Heikkila, died Friday, April 20, 2001 at a local nursing facility. Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late B. James Bryant and Lillie Ida Corbett Bryant. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Emil W. Heikkila Jr., of Cumming, Ga.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Bryant. Graveside survices will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2001, in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. LaRue Cook officiating. Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

OTIS GARY
Otis Gary, 86, widow of the late Thomas Gary, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born October 4, 1914, in Sumter County, she was the grandmother of Tracey Brewer of Wedgefield. The family will receive friends at the home of the granddaughter, 4836 McLauren Road, Wedgefield. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

GLORIA J. BRADFORD
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Gloria Jean Canty Bradford, wife of Ronald Bradford, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Brooklyn. Born in Sumter County, she was the daughter of Hattie Canty and the late Joseph Canty. She was a graduate of Manchester High School. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Bradford Jr., and Brian Bradford, both of Brooklyn; four brothers, Willie Canty, Joseph Canty Jr., and Moses Canty, all of Brooklyn, and Glenn Canty of Pinewood; and four sisters, Bettie Hopkins, Susan Lee Hopkins and Gladys Canty, all of Brooklyn, and Brenda Canty of Pinewood. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, at St. James AME Church in Pinewood, with the Rev. Sandra M. Smith, pastor, and the Rev. Joseph Postell, eulogist, presiding. The family will receive friends at the home of the mother on Railroad Ave. Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

WASH BENNETT Jr.
SUMMERTON — Wash Bennett Jr., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Windor Manor Nursing Home. Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of Daisy Bennett and the late Wash Bennett Sr. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County, and was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. Survivors other than his mother include three sons, Wesley Bennett of Summerton, Isaac Garden of Manning, and Wash Garden of New York; two daughters, Yvette Bennett of Tampa, Fla., and Rebecca Frazier of Manning; two sisters, Mary Frank and Annie Lee Bennett, both of Summerton; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and George Bennett. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, at Liberty Hill AME Church, with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Brunson, the Rev. Bernard Richburg and the Rev. Jerial Dingle. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Route 2, Box 216, Summerton. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001. King Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of the arrangements.

REATHA M. THAMES
MANNING — Reatha M. Thames, widow of the late James Thames, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Major and the late Lala Holliday Major. She was a member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church and served faithfully as a member of the Sunday School, usher board, gospel choir and the missionary society. She was also a member of the YWCA and Manning Branch NAACP. Before her retirement she was employed with Central Coffee Shop in Manning. Survivors include three sons, Jimmie Thames and Herbert Thames, both of Manning, and James Thames Jr., of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter, Janet Canty of Columbia; a brother, Simon Major of Sumter; and five grandchildren. The deceased was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Services will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville, with the Rev. Henry Presley officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. Richburg, minister Terry Johnson and minister Major Lloyd. Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 316 South Boundary St. in Manning. Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

J. WALTON HARPER
BLUFFTON — J. Walton Harper, 83, husband of Elizabeth Vincent Hanna Harper, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at his home after an extended illness. Born March 27, 1918, in Estill, he was the son of the late Charles Andrew and Margaret Elizabeth Mikell Harper. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was an Army Veteran of World War II. He was a pharmacist and former owner of Economy Drug Store, Allendale Truck and Tractor Company, and the Interstate Truck Stop. He was a founder and a lifetime member of NATSO. He was also a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a charter member of the Charleston Chess Club. He was a member and former trustee of Bluffton United Methodist Church. Survivors other than his wife include two step-daughters, Beth Brown and her husband Clif of Sumter, and Eloise Hiers and her husband John of Lexington; a step-son, Leslie Hanna and his wife Carol of Estill; six grandchildren, Leslie Loper, Vincent H. Loper, John D. Hiers, III, Ann Hiers Moore, Melanie Hanna Fairey and Michelle Hanna Hiers; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stiles M. Harper and J. Lawton Harper of Estill; and a sister, Margaret H. Barker of Beaufort. He was preceded in death by his brothers William Harper and Charles A. Harper Jr. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2001, at the Bluffton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. James Ivey officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, in the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill. The family will receive friends following each service, and at the residence in Bluffton until the hour of services on Monday, April 23, 2001, and that afternoon at the home of Leslie Hanna Jr., 125 Baker Blvd. East, Estill. Memorials may be sent to the Bluffton United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 368, Bluffton, SC, 29910, or Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 1857, Bluffton, SC 29910. Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of the arrangements.

Rebecca L. Blair of 17 Third Ave. died Friday evening, April 20, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Ida L. Lesesne, 15 Third Ave. Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

JIMMIE POSTELL
Jimmie Postell, widower of Sarah Felder Postell, died today, April 23, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was born May 2, 1922, in Sumter County. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Delores Postell Pringle, 1005 S. Main St. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

Scott Sanders died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at his home. He was a son of Marvin Sanders and Frankie Goodman Sanders. The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 4099 Congruity Church Road. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

JOSEY M. ANDERSON
JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Josey Mae Anderson, wife of Tyrone Briggs, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Christ Hospital. Born Jan. 15, 1949, in St. Charles, S.C., she was a daughter of Josephine A. Toney and the late George Murray Anderson. She attended the public schools in Lee County, S.C. She was employed with the Visiting Homemakers of Jersey City. In her youth, she joined Unionville AME Church in St. Charles, and after relocating to Jersey City, she attended various churches. Survivors besides her husband of Jersey City include a son, Corey Anderson of the home; a daughter, Yolanda Anderson of the home; three brothers, George Williams of Jersey City, George Anderson Jr. of Norfolk, Va., and Willie Moses of Sumter, S.C.; five sisters, Bertha Scarborough of Bishopville, S.C., Mary Degraffenreid of Lansing, Pa., Mary Jane Toney of Coatesville, Pa., and Willima Thomas and Essie Mae Isaac, both of Sumter; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey O’Neal Anderson; and a brother, Roosevelt Anderson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Unionville AME Church, Swimming Pen Road, St. Charles, with the Rev. Joshua Dupree, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of her sister, Bertha Scarborough, 559 Manville-Wisacky Road, Bishopville. The family will receive friends at the same home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.
