CHRISTINE HILL MILLER Christine Hill Miller, age 81, 162 Taylor Ave., Elizabethton, died Monday, May 19, 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late, Cameron and Annie Turner Scalf. She was a member of East Fairview Free Will Baptist Church. She was a retired cook from Southern Restaurant. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman V. Hill, her second husband, William M. Miller, a sister, Selma Campbell, and brother, Harold Scalf. Survivors include, 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law, Phyllis Odom, Elizabethton, Debra and Danny Norris, Elizabethton, 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Ronnie Hill, Elizabethton, Terry and Ann Hill, Elizabethton, Wayne and Rose Hill, Elizabethton, 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Mary Jenkins, Elizabethton, her little dog “Mitzi”, several nieces and nephews, special great grandson, Joshua White, Elizabethton also survives. The funeral service for Christine Hill Miller, age 81, 162 Taylor Ave., Elizabethton who died Monday, May 19, 2003 will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 at Tetrick Funerla Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Bud Malone officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 22 at Hill Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Melvin Simmons, Daniel Simmons, Michael Hill, Robbie Hill, Danny Norris and Harold White. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James and Dr. Michelle Davenport, Dr. R.E. Galloway and Dr. Shobha R. Hiremagalur, and Intensive Care doctors and staff at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. LEONA C. GRINDSTAFF LEONA C. GRINDSTAFF, age 85, 1113 Ledford Street, Elizabethton, TN, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter the late Jerry and Nettie Hodge Pritchard. Mrs. Grindstaff was a member of Hunter Memorial Baptist Church. She was retired from North American Rayon Corporation. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Pritchard and an infant daughter, Thelma Pritchard. Survivors include three sisters, Mae Pritchard and Martha Irick, both of Elizabethton and Ruth Simerly of Hampton; a brother, Spencer Pritchard of Elizabethton; two grandsons Brian and his spouse, Lia Pritchard of Jonesborough, and Greg Pritchard of Elizabethton; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Pritchard Campbell of Elizabethton; two great-grandchildren, Christy Miller and Robyn Miller, both of Elizabethton, and several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Leona C. Grindstaff, age 85, 1113 Ledford Street, Elizabethton who died Sunday, June 1, 2003, will be conducted at 8:00 pm, Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. CLARENCE BOONE OAKS Clarence Boone Oaks, age 86, 449 Bear Branch Road, Roan Mountain died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late John and Bessie Whittington Oaks. He was a member of Taylor’s Chapel Church of Christ. He was a retired employee of Veterans Administration, Mountain Home, TN. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Lindsey, and three sons, John Oaks, Mack Oaks and Clarence Junior Oaks, three sisters, Myrtle Hanna, Stells Bryant, Frankie Paregoric, and three brothers, Wheeler Oaks, Earnest Oaks, and Champ Oaks. He was a member of Crabtree Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister. JOSEPHINE ALICE BOWERS Josephine Alice Bowers, age 84, Elizabethton, died Sunday May, 11, 2003 at Mancare Nursing Home, Largo, MD. A native of Worster, MA, she had moved to Elizabethton in 1949. She was the daughter of the late Alonza and Rhoda Stanley Kelley. She was a member of Brown’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Mrs. Bowers was a retired school teacher from Kingsport School System. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Otis Bowers, 2 brothers, Harry Kelley, Alonza Kelley and 2 sisters, May Austin and Artibelle Plumber. JEREMY LYNN HEWLETT Jeremy Lynn Hewlett, age 21, 1410 Stoneybrook Drive, Johnson City, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at his residence. A native of Hawkins County, he was the son of Martin Lynn and Jerrie Mayfield Hewlett of Elizabethton. He attended Fairview Baptist Church. Mr. Hewlett was an employee of Big John’s Close Outs. He was an Ambassador for Northeast State Technical Community College in Blountville. In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Tasha Nicole Hewlett of the home; two sisters, Miriam Hewlett and Victoria Hewlett both of Elizabethton; and a maternal grandmother, Kay Mayfield of Elizabethton. Charles Lee Buchanan Charles Lee Buchanan, age 60, of 8410 Highway 19-E, Elk Park, North Carolina, died Thursday, June 12, 2003 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A native of Elk Park, NC, he was a son of Lois Fields, of Elk Park, NC, and the late James Buchanan. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Fields, and step-father, Roland Fields. Survivors including his mother are, Two Aunts, Mary Ruth Markland, Roan Mountain, and Nola Freeman, Jonesborough; Two Uncles, Tull Oaks, Jr., Roan Mountain, and Levi Oaks, Gary Indiana. Several Cousins also survive. The funeral service for Charles Lee Buchanan, age 60, who died Thursday, June 12, 2003 will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Brice Robinson Mr. Brice Robinson, age 91, of 218 Berry Hill Road Elizabethton died Monday, June 23, 2003 at his farm from injuries received in a tractor accident. Mr. Robinson was a native of Johnson County and was a son of the late Seth and Ethel Allen Robinson. He was the oldest active member of the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, a farmer, and was a retired school bus driver for the Carter County School System. He was former Chairman of the Board of the ASCS, a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and was the Wagon Train Head Master. Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Berry Robinson, by one brother, Bud Robinson and by two sisters, Grace Galloway and Nell Bowers. Survivors include one son, Dean Robinson, Elizabethton, one daughter, Anna Ruth Pierce, Elizabethton, and one sister, Charlotte Smith of Elizabethton. Two granddaughters, Mikki Robinson Smith and JoAnna Pierce Orr, both of Elizabethton. One grandson, Lynn Robinson, Rutherfordton, North Carolina, three great grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Corey Smith and Sara Jo Elizabeth Orr, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Brice Robinson, age 91 of 218 Berry Hill Road Elizabethton who died Monday, will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday from the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Haskell Ingram, Dr. Kenneth Jordan and Dr. Bill Duncan, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Smith Sisters. Interment will follow in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Lynn Robinson, Greg Smith, Mike Nidiffer, Mike Orr, Gurney Pierce, Jerry Weaver, Bob Finney, R.H. Berry, Michael Whisenhunt and Mike McKinney. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. MYRTLE LITTLE CARVER Myrtle Little Carver, age 94, 2200 State Line Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was a native of Carter County, and the daughter of the late Arthur Ruble (Buck) and Lena Madge Hatcher Little. Mrs. Carver attended East Tennessee State Teachers College and was employed as a teacher and principal in the Carter County School System. She was a member of the Valley Forge United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Carver, two sisters, Nannie Renfro and Cora Lee Little, and five brothers, Thurman, Paul, Harry, Tillman, and Clarence Little. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Louise Carver, Bristol, Linda and Robert Fanslow, Kingsport, four grandchildren and spouses, Robert and Jan Fanslow, Atlanta, GA, Mary Fanslow, Kingsport, Jane Fanslow Eaton and Larry Eaton, Atlanta, GA, Thomas Fanslow, Washington, D.C., one sister, Rose Little Welch, Elizabethton, one brother and two sisters-in-law, Emory Lewis “Jack” and Dorothy Little, Winona Rader Little, all of Elizabethton, many nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Myrtle Little Carver, age 94, 2200 State Line Road, Elizabethton who died Thursday, June 19, 2003 will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 22, at Valley Forge United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Humphrey and Rev. Lon Tobin officiating. Music will be under the direction of Linda Baughman, Judy Little and Trilla Little. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Happy Valley Memorial Park immediately following the funeral service. Active pallbearers will be Bob Fanslow, Tom Fanslow, Kenneth Jewett, Larry Jewett, Berdell Little, Joe Nave, Danny Tolley and Kenneth Welch III.
