Lucy Lucado Akin

Akin, Lucy Lucado, age 90, of Knoxville, wife of Eli Conley Akin, passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at 2:30 AM. She was born to her parents, John T. and Lucy S. Lucado on July 21, 1910, in Atoka, Tennessee. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tennessee Association of the Deaf, and National Association of the Deaf. She was an alumna of the Tennessee School for the Deaf and Gallaudet University. She retired in 1976 (after teaching 38 years at the TSD.) She started employment at TSD in 1936 as a sewing instructor and dormitory counselor of girls and served as assistant librarian until 1940. She was re-employed at TSD in 1942 as an academic teacher and remained in this position until her retirement in 1976. The 1976 Viking yearbook was dedicated to Lucy and Conley Akin. Preceded in death by her husband, Eli Conley Akin; parents, John T. and Lucy Simonton Lucado, sisters; Ida May Armstrong and Dorris Lesniak; Lucado brothers, Prentis, William and John. Sister: Ann Black, of Memphis, TN Funeral service 7:30 PM Thursday, Berry Chapel. Interment: 10:00 AM Friday at Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Seale officiating. Elsie Lee McGill Hammond

Hammond, Elsie Lee McGill, age 93, of South Knoxville,TN passed away August 29, 2000 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. Mrs Hammond was a graduate of Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing (1929), earning her Registered Nurse certificate in 1929 and retired from St. Mary's Hospital in 1970. She was a member of Island Home Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband of 68 years, Donald W. Hammond. The family wishes to give special thanks to family and friends of Hillcrest South Nursing Home. Saundra 'Sandy' Akers Biasella

Biasella, Saundra "Sandy" Akers, age 58, of Knoxville, formerly of Maryville, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2000 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center after an 18 year battle with cancer. Early in her career she was an airline stewardess with United Airlines for 8 years and for the last 10 years she has been employed by Patton Investment Company. Preceded in death by parents, Clark and Vernenna Akers. Daughter and son-in-law: Shannon and Jim Murray of Knoxville The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 7:45 PM Tuesday at Berry Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 PM with Rev. Ed Cloud officiating. Because of her love for animals please make memorials to the Knox County Humane Society, 800 Millwood Road, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920. Former teacher of the TEL Sunday School Class; taught at Immanuel Baptist Church Kindergarten in the late 1950's. Retired houseparent at John Tarleton Home for Children. Preceded in death by husband, George E. Kenner; parents, Columbus D. and Eva Jett Franklin. Sisters-in-law: Rena Kenner of Knoxville; Elizabeth Kenner of Kingsport; Thelma Frith of Dwight, Illinois Funeral services will be Wednesday at 8:00 PM at Immanuel Baptist Church, Dr. George Hollander and Dr. Gene Fleming officiating. Pallbearers will be Russ Hollingsworth, Stuart Hollingsworth, Sonny Atchley, Mike Rule, John Rule, and Scott Smithers. Interment will be at 10:00 AM Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery. Wallace Buhrman Still

Mildred King Litton

Member of Lonsdale Baptist Church and May Chapter #24 OES having served as Ada and Ruth. Mrs. Litton was also a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority receiving the Outstanding Girl of the Year Award and was also secretary of the sorority council. She was owner of Mimi's Fashions for Children since 1969. Preceded in death by parents, Parrott and Earla King; husband, Louie Litton; daughter, Anita Cobb and a brother, Lloyd King. Son and daughter-in-law: Gary and Libbie Litton Funeral service Monday 8:00 PM at Berry Chapel with Mr. Rufus Faubion officiating. Interment Tuesday 2:00 PM at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Charles Gregory O'Connor

O'Connor, Charles Gregory - age 84, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2000, at home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, former Knoxville Mayor John T. O'Connor and Mary Wright O'Connor; brothers, John A. O'Connor, Joseph F. O'Connor, and James R. O'Connor. Mr. O'Connor was the founder and owner of East Tennessee Food Brokerage Co. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus and a past Grand Knight. He was actively involved in all the activities of his children and grandchildren. Wife of 53 years: Jeanne M. O'Connor A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, August 25, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Vine Ave. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 26, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The mass will be officiated by Father Jim Haley, Father Rick Walsh, Father Xavier Mankel, Father Jim Vick, and Father Bill Gahagan. Graveside services will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers: Forest Kirkpatrick, Frank Richmond, Paul Murphy, Willie Charles, Ralph Monroe, Graham Driscoll, David McWhirter, Walter Clancy, John Provenza, and Marvin Tarpy. Pallbearers: sons-in-law, Pat Yochim, Joe Savery, Jim Hazenfield, Scott VanFleet, Norm Canfield, Greg Heaton, and Mike Ensley. In lieu of flowers. memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Immaculate Conception Fish Pantry, Interfaith Health Clinic, and St. Mary's Hospice. Ethel L. 'Nanny' Pridemore

Preceded in death by husband, Vestal N. Pridemore; daughters, Shirley Ellen Pruitt, Joyce Ann Russell; two brothers; two sisters. Lt. Colonel Thomas Stuart Woodson

WOODSON, LT. COLONEL THOMAS STUART, AUS, Ret. - died in Knoxville, August 23, 2000, at age 78. He was born in Chattanooga to Ryland D. Marguerite Dobson Woodson, both of whom predeceased him. The family moved to Alabama when he was two years old, his father being employed by Alabama Power Co. Woodson started his schooling in Alabama, but returned to Tennessee to stay with relatives and continue his schooling in Knoxville, later enrolling in Tennessee Military Institute (TMI) in Sweetwater, where he was a member of the football team. He spend five years at TMI, the last year as a tutor. Woodson had hoped to receive an appointment to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point upon graduation in 1940, but when that did not occur, he took employment at ALCOA. He enrolled at Auburn University in 1942, but the military called some three months later and he entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant. After training in Camp Robinson, AR, Camp Forrest, Tenn., Fort Lewis, Wash. and in the Southern California desert, he was sent overseas to see service in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Eniwetok and Okinawa. Released from active duty in 1945, he returned home to Clanton, AL, where he met and married Edith Newell. Woodson had intended to re-enter Auburn, but scarce housing led him to come to Knoxville and the University of Tennessee. He graduated from UT in 1948 with a degree in electrical engineering. While at the University, he was named to Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu, honorary fraternities. Later, he became a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). He accepted employment with Douglas Aircraft Co., El Segundo, Calif., upon graduation but returned to Knoxville after two years and was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, from which he retired in 1982. He was a long-time member of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville, serving in a number of capacities, including the Administrative Board and the Building and Grounds Committee. He was a member of the Tennessee Society, Sons of the Revolution, a Kentucky "Colonel" and a Tennessee "Squire". Though discharged from active duty as a first lieutenant, Woodson rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel through his continued service in the Army Reserve, serving as a commander 996th Signal Corps unit and as an instructor for the Command and General Staff School. For many years he maintained a Military Affiliate System (MARS) radio station at Knoxville's Army Reserve Center. During the Vietnam war, he relayed many messages between deployed service members and their dependents at home. Lt. Colonel Woodson was an active member and leader in the Reserve Officers Association of the United States (ROA). He served as president of both the Knoxville Chapter, the Tennessee Department and as Tennessee's National Councilman. He was a member of the Knoxville Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW). His wife of 54 years, Edith Newell Woodson, survives, as do the following: sons and daughters-in-law, Robert S. and Katherine Woodson and Thomas W. and Jenny Woodson; grandchildren, Andrew A. Thurman, Kristina T. Grzep and husband Christopher, Matthew Stuart Woodson, Jessica C. Woodson, Cassie W. Jones and husband Jason, Gabriel T. Woodson and Gracie Woodson; also, great-granddaughter, Sidney K. Grzep. Other survivors: brothers and sisters-in-law, William D. and Elizabeth Woodson and Herbert M. and Jeanie Newell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha W. and Larry Faulk and Juanita Newell and Roy L. Hayes, and sister, Wanda Newell Gernhofer; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive also. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 26, 10:30 a.m., at Church Street United Methodist Church, Rev. William J. Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends one one-and-half hours in the church chapel following the funeral. Graveside interment services in Woodlawn Cemetery will be private. Memorials may be made to Church Street United Methodist Church or Vine International, PO Box 52086, Knoxville, TN 37950. Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy., in charge of arrangements.
