Robert Leonard Bowen

Robert Leonard Bowen Sr., 54, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Grandview, died Sunday Sept. 20, 1998, at Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Bowen was veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge, Missouri and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert C. Bowen.
Survivors include two sons, Robert L. Bowen Jr., and William Gregory Bowen, both of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren, April and Aaron Bowen of Kansas City, Mo.; mother, Rachel Bowen of Spring City; grandmother, Julia Smith of Grandview; sister, Mary Ann Smith of Dayton, Ruby Karalewitz of Kingston, N.Y., Linda Fugate of Rockwood, Tenn., and Naomi Hinely of Spring City; brothers, Doyle Bowen and Charles Bowen, both of Rockwood, Tenn., and Paul Bowen of Ringgold, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood with Rev. David Harmon officiating. Interment will follow in Spring City Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Evans Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Raymond McFalls
Died: 09/22/1998
Raymond McFalls, 85, of Grandview, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn.
He was the son of the late Wade and Martha Edwards McFalls. A longtime resident of Grandview, Mr. McFalls was a retired press operator for General Motors and serviced in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended the Johnson Chapel Baptist Church in Grandview.
He was preceded in death by his stepson, James Crawford, two brothers, Darius and Jim McFalls and two sisters, Allie Knox and Mildred Reed.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary Newby McFalls of Grandview; sister, Susie Ford of Elyria, Ohio; brother, Oscar McFalls of Ten Mile, Tenn.; step-grandson, Terry Crawford of Pikeville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. John Pair officiating. Burial will follow the services in Stebbins Cemetery in Grandview. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the funeral home. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of arrangements.
William Edward Miller
Died: 09/14/1998
William Edward Miller, 64, of Spring City, died Monday Sept. 14, 1998, in Quartzsite, Ariz. He was the son of the late Ralph William and Marion Hewitt Miller.
Born in Elmira, N.Y., Mr. Miller moved to Florida in 1959 and then to Spring City in 1977. He and his wife owned and operated the Roddy Market for over 20 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Navy. He was of the Methodist Faith.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Dunn Miller of Spring City; son, William Miller of Bradenton, Fla.; two daughters, Vicki Sivik of Rockwood, Tenn., and Laurie Miller of Spring City; sister, Cindy Mullis of Spring City; three brothers, Richard Miller of Burdett, N.Y., Robert Miller of Nashville and Jim Miller of Ohio; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Daniel Hoke Defore
Died: 09/24/1998
Daniel Hoke Defore, of Dayton, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. Mr. Defore was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Defore, son, Ricky Defore, and daughter, Juanita Defore. He was 84.
Survivors include by seven sons, Floyd Defore of Spring City, Donnie Defore of Nashville, Jim Defore of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Robert Defore and Paul Defore, both of Bakewell, Dean Defore of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jerry Defore of Graysville; five daughters, Helen Creasman of Dayton, Ruby Cox and Wanda Fields, both of Acworth, Ga., Louise Stevens of Marietta, Ga., and Rhonda Shipley of Graysville; 32 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Cove Chapel Church of God with Rev. Willard Griffith and Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Interment will follow the services in Cove Cemetery. The family will received visitors from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at the funeral home. Eileen M. Goodin
Died: 09/21/1998
Eileen M. Goodin, of Spring City, died at her home Monday, Sept. 21, 1998. She was the daughter of the late Francis P. and Antoinette Di Meola Goggins of Southington, Conn. She was 77.
Born in New Haven, Conn., she taught elementary school in Sussex County and Rockaway, N.J., for 12 years. She taught in Palominas School in Hereford, Ariz., and was a resident of Tucson and Bisbee, Ariz., for 22 years. A cum laude graduate of Fairleigh Dickenson University and the University of Arizona.
At the time of her death she was serving as president of the Spring City A.A.R.P. Chapter, was an officer and past president of many organizations and civic groups including, the Chattanooga Doll Club, Heritage Doll Club of Athens, Living Heritage Museum, Spring City Dig and Dream Garden Club, American Federation of Women’s Clubs—Spring City and several gem and mineral clubs.
She was a member of the Spring City United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was also a 4-H and Girl and Boy Scout leader for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hayes Goodin in February of this year.
Survivors include her son, Brian Goodin of Spring City; two daughters, Laura Garie Lee of El Cajon, Calif., and Annette Gould of Spring City; three grandsons, Ronald Garie of Spring City, Michael Garie of Utah and Timothy Gould of Spring City; two granddaughters, Gretchen Garie of Spring City and Corinne Gould of Spring City; and great-granddaughter, Lu Laura Garie of Spring City.
Memorial Services will be held at the Spring City United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, with Rev. Don Allison officiating. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of arrangements.
Margie Lee Jewell
Died: 09/25/1998
Margie Lee Jewell, of Spring City, died at her home Friday, Sept. 25, 1998. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie Janow Garrison. She was 66.
A lifetime resident of Rhea County, she was a homemaker and an avid reader. She was a member of the Texas Grove Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a son, James “John” Jewell, two brothers, Charlie and Walt Garrison, and sister, Gladys Boles.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Jewell of Spring City; daughter, Sharon Fugate of Spring City; sister, Myra Fugate of Spring City; two brothers, Claude Garrison of Spring City and Clayton Garrison of Maryland; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at the Texas Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Denny Brown and Dr. Roger Rothwell officiating. Interment will follow the services in Ad Smith Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at the funeral home. Lowell D. SNEED

Lowell D. Sneed, of Dayton, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Park Ridge Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Sneed, and parents Earnest and Jessie Sneed.
Lowell was a lifelong resident of Dayton and was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. He was veteran of World War II. Survivors include his sons, Jerry Sneed and Don Sneed, both of Dayton; daughter, Debbie Sneed Snyder of Dayton; two sisters, Ruth Bishop and Arsula Gravett, both of Dayton; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Sneed Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
Perry Bishop
Died: 09/24/1998
Perry Bishop, of Dayton, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998. He was 84. Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Carol Dawson.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Purser Bishop of Dayton; two daughters, Joy Dawson of Dayton and Peggy McClain of Dayton; two sons-in-law, Pat Dawson and Mack McClain, both of Dayton; two sisters, Elizabeth Vaughn of Dayton and Leona Parsons of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Berry Bishop of Dayton and Thomas Bishop of Battle Creek, Mich.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald and Barry Purser officiating. Interment followed the services in Buttram Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
Astrid Brett Shell
Died: 09/28/1998
Astrid Brett Shell of Knoxville and Spring City, died Monday Sept. 28, 1998, following a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Elsie Ratzlaff Brett and Dr. Axel Brett.
Mrs. Shell was a 1938 graduate of Knoxville High School and received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Knoxville and an associate member of First Presbyterian Church in Spring City. She was past president of Holston Hills Community Club, past vice-president of Women’s Symphony League, an active member of the Spring City Women’s Club, and had been recognized by the City of Knoxville fore 35 years of service to the Dogwood Trail.
Mrs. Shell was a speech teach in the Primary Department at Tennessee School for the Deaf for 17 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie Retzlaff Brett of New Ulm, Minn., and Dr. Axel Brett of Upsala, Sweden and her brother, Dr. Roland Brett of Knoxville.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, James Ralph Shell of Knoxville and Spring City; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Moore Shell Blankner and Edward Michael Blankner Jr. of Houston, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Jane Brett Altom and William H. Altom of Gonzales, Texas; grandsons, Edward Michael Blankner III of Chicago, Ill., Brett Shell Blankner and his wife, Emily Elizabeth Rhodes of College Station, Texas.
The family wishes to thank her many friends for their love and support, and acknowledge them all with this quote from Yeates: “Think where Man’s glory most begins and ends and say my glory was I had such friends.”
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Knoxville with Rev. J. Stephen Misenheimer and Rev. L.C. Sparks officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Dorothy Hall Smith

Dorothy Hall Smith, of Spring City, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late Jules and Zona Hall. She was 76.
Born in Polk County, Tenn., she moved to the Spring City area in 1970 from Bradley County, Tenn. She was a homemaker and a member of the Wolf Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Woodrow, Glenn and Boyd Hall, and five sisters, Zelma Dixon, Mamie Hall, Opal Bates, Ada McCalastor and Alma Chandler.
Survivors include her husband, George W. Smith of Spring City; son, George Frederick Smith of Soddy-Daisy; daughter, Wanda Faye McCoy of Cleveland; two sisters, Tillie Coffee and Mary Ruth Hysinger, both of Cleveland; two brothers, Claude Hall and Burch Hall, both of Cleveland; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Doyle Bowen officiating. Interment followed the services in Spring City Memorial Gardens. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.
Elmer V. Bean
Died: 09/25/1998
Elmer V. Bean Jr., of Kalamazoo, Mich., died Friday Sept. 25, 1998. He was the son of the late Elmer and Millie (Lamb) Bean Sr. He was 83.
Mr. Bean was born July 11, 1915, in Kalamazoo, where he was a lifelong resident. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Upjohn for 20 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Michigan C.C.C., and the Portage Senior Center. He also was active in Boy Scouting and counseling cancer patients. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Geraldine M. (Rector) Bean of Kalamazoo; son, Elmer Bean III and wife, Jean, of Marcellus, Mich.: four daughters, Nancy Staley and husband, Danny, of Otsego, Mich., Leah Randall and husband, Charles, of Dayton, twin daughters, Janet Marvin and husband, Robert, of Rockford, Mich., and Janice Frederick and husband, David, of Mattawan, Mich.; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and a cousin.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in the chapel of Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel in Kalamazoo with Pastor Les Seal officiating.. Interment followed the services in Fort Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Trinity Baptist Church of the Portage Senior Center.
