Mary Woody
Died: 01/06/2001

Mary Woody, of Dayton, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Northpark Hospital in Chattanooga. She was 71.

Born June 11, 1929, in Rhea County, to the late Dorthy Porter and Vinet L. Fine, Mrs. Woody lived in Rhea County all of her life. A housewife, she had been employed at Robinson Manufacturing Company in Dayton and Spring City Manufacturing Company. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Woody of Dayton; sons, Marshall Woody of Dayton, and Wesley J. Woody of Bakewell; daughters, Mary Ann and Katherine Sherrill and Barbara Cox, all of Dayton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and brother, Jesse Fine of Evensville.

Funeral services were conducted Monday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Revs. Robert A. Hurd and Robert L. Lands officiating. Burial followed in Pritchett Cemetery. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Nancy Marie Roberts Thompson
Died: 01/10/2001

Nancy Marie Roberts Thompson, of Spring City, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville from complications resulting from an accident. She was 74.

A lifelong resident of Rhea and Cumberland counties, Mrs. Thompson was retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery Company and attended Central Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Bertha Virginia Smith Roberts; and brother, James Roberts.

Survivors include her husband, James C. Thompson of Spring City; son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Johnnie S. Roberts of Spring City; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Careal Stewart of Gordonsville, Tenn.; sister, Mae Hayes of Grandview; grandsons, Lynn Roberts of Pikeville, Greg Roberts of Evensville, Les Roberts of Spring City, Jason Stewart of Gordonsville, Tenn., and Darren Stewart of Hendersonville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Tiffany Roberts Garren of Spring City; and great-grandchildren, Ashlea and Heather Roberts, both of Spring City, and Chris and Kayla Watson, both of Pikeville.

Funeral services were conducted Friday in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Grandview. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.

Roy Bach
Died: 01/13/2001

Roy Bach, of Spring City, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Spring City Care Center. He was 91.

Born in Jackson, Ky., to the late Miles and Nora Watson Bach, Mr. Bach was a retired highway engineer with the State of Kentucky Highway Department. A member of First Baptist Church of Spring City, he was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Golden Hatton Bach of Spring City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Spring City with Rev. Terry Meeks officiating. Funeral services will also be conducted today at 3 p.m. at Breathitt Funeral Home in Jackson, Ky., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Jackson County Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vision 2000 Fund of Spring City First Baptist Church. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of local arrangements.

Herman Ralph Dyer
Died: 01/11/2001

Herman Ralph Dyer, of Dayton, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. He was 77.

Mr. Dyer was a retired truck driver for Suburban Manufacturing Company in Dayton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cicero and Maggie Allen Dyer; brother, Everett Dyer; and grandson, Charlie Dyer.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Doss Dyer of Dayton; daughters, Brenda Wooten, Linda McSpadden and Judy Nixon, all of Dayton; sons, Don and Ron Dyer, both of Dayton; sisters, Edith Pettigo of Gamaliel, Ky., Ruby Meador of Dayton, and Oleta Dowden of Graysville; brothers, Norman, Denzel, Raymond and Kenneth Dyer, all of Dayton; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Ewing officiating. Burial followed in Spivey Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Homer Henderson
Died: 01/11/2001

Homer Henderson, of Dayton, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Spring City Care Center. He was 89.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Henderson was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Florina Henderson; brothers, Issac, Leonard, Osborne, T.J., Bradley, Arvin and Walt Henderson; and sister, Bertie Smith.

Survivors include his son, Danny Sneed of Dayton; daughter, Patricia Rudd of Dayton; sister, Myrtle Swafford of Cleveland, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Wilkey officiating. Burial followed in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Jean Jenkins
Died: 03/17/2001

Betty Jean Jenkins, of Graysville, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home. She was 66.

Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Victory Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dee Estree Jenkins Sr.; son, Tim Jenkins; parents, John and Rebecca Collins; a sister; and brothers, John and Wayne Collins.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Blankenship of Graysville; sons, Butch and Matthew Jenkins, both of Graysville, and Charlie Jenkins of Sale Creek; sisters, Josephine Thurman, Lillian Beene and Barbara Frashier, all of Graysville, and Mozell Sneed of Dayton; grandchildren, Dee III and Brandi Jo and Jason Burton, Megean, Justin, Joshua, Brandon, Amanda, Kelia and Shanee Jenkins, Cheyene Blankenship and Bradley Dunn; and special daughter-in-law, Angela Jenkins.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Revs. Clyde Fitzgerald and Charles Underwood officiating. Burial followed in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton.

Pallbearers were Andy and Bruce Beene, Johnny Thurman, Ricky Frashier and John William Collins. Honorary pallbearers were David and Tony Thurman, Wayne Laird, James Frashier and Johnny Collins. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Katie Elizabeth (Robinson) Denton
Died: 03/19/2001

Katie Elizabeth (Robinson) Denton, of Dayton, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. She was 89.

Born Aug. 9, 1911, in Meigs County, Mrs. Denton graduated from Rhea Central High School in 1928 and was involved in the early years of Robinson Manufacturing Company. She retired from the firm after 47 years of employment in various supervisory positions.

A member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in Sunday School, Mrs. Denton was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and a secretary of the local organization for many years. A state officer and extensive traveler of OES, Mrs. Denton served as the state grand marshal in 1958.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Denton; parents, Eugene and May (Schenck) Robinson; and brothers, William T. and Earnest H. Robinson.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, Robert L. Denton of Charlotte, N.C.; nephews, William F. Robinson of Dayton, Kenneth and Tom Robinson, both of Evensville, Joe Robinson of Savannah, Ga., Earnest H. Robinson Jr. of Spring City, David Robinson of Chattanooga and Charles Robinson of South Pittsburg, Tenn.; and nieces, Linda Montez of Hawaii, and Shirley Wilson of Ooltewah, Tenn.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Brown officiating. Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Benjamin Williams
Died: 03/15/2001

Robert Benjamin Williams, of Evensville, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Sunbridge of Decatur. He was 80.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Williams was a retired farmer and attended Free Will Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patty Williams; son, Benjamin Williams; parents, Marion and Sally Williams; and sister, Nellie Vericker.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Williams of Evensville; daughters, Velma Smith, Dovie Lambeth, Barbara Campbell and Josephine Shannon, all of Evensville, Shirley Freels of Dayton, and Bessie Marler of Pikeville; sons, Larry Williams of Pikeville, Lonnie Williams of Graysville, Marion Williams of Dayton, and George, Wayne, Nathaniel and Jackie Williams, all of Evensville; brother, Ira Williams of Evensville; 27 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Vaughn Dunn officiating. Burial followed in Summer City Cemetery on Dayton Mountain. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Hugh Boyd Millard
Died: 03/18/2001

Hugh Boyd Millard, of Dayton, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. He was 83.

Born June 2, 1917, in Jackson County, Ala., Mr. Millard was a machine operator at Whelan Products in his younger years. An avid baseball player, having played with the Dayton Blue Jays, he served as corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Addie (Dodson) Millard; and brother, Thomas (Ras) Millard.

Survivors include his brothers, John Millard of Hixson, and Pat Millard of Dayton; sisters, Pearl Hixson, Clara Hambrick and Betty Denton, all of Hixson, Grace Lee of Memphis, Tenn., and Hazel Wilson of Dayton.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Minister Steve Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Dayton City Cemetery. Vanderwall Funeral home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.
