Mrs. Vada Arnett, 83, 202 Marion Branch Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Arnett was a native of Avery County, N.C., and had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a daughter of the late Arthur and Belle McGuire Mann. Mrs. Arnett was a member of Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Archie Arnett, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard Ray and Barbara Arnett, Elizabethton; three grandchildren: Richard Todd Arnett and Mark Shannon Arnett, both of Elizabethton; and Tammy Gardner, Lancaster, S.C.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Charles Brewer, 42, 429 West G Street, Elizabethton, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his residence after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Campbell Stevens. He was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and a member of Rittertown Baptist Church. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Carl and Linda Brewer, Bluff City; four half-sisters, Pam Stevens and Jennifer Campbell, both of Hampton, Teresa Lawson, Maryville, and Sharon Joyner, Bluff City; eight half-brothers, Chris Stevens, William Stevens, Walter Stevens and Hershel Stevens, Jr., all of Hampton, Gary Campbell, Roan Mountain, Richard Taylor, Kingsport, Steven Brewer, Bluff City, and Mike Taylor; several nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, and a special friend, Hilda. Robert Lee Gourley, 83, 157 Rockhouse Road, Johnson City, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Gourley was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late James C. and Ida Forbes Gourley. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. He was retired from the Johnson City Medical Center as chief of security. Mr. Gourley was a 1935 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was a World War II and Korean Army veteran and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Gourley was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Caroline Cox Gourley, several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Alan Dave Walls, 40, 134 Cuyler Wilee Road, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at his residence. Mr. Walls was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was a son of the late William J. and Mary Belle Willard Walls. Mr. Walls was a self-employed electronics technician and sound reinforcement engineer. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Walls was a member of the Johnson City Orchestra for a number of years. Survivors include his wife, Susan Walls; three brothers, Roy Willard Walls, Jerry Ray Walls and Glen Kenneth Walls, all of Johnson City; three nieces and two nephews. Mrs. Holland was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Hobart M. Sr. and Mamie Chambers Burrough. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William A. Holland, in 1961, a brother, H.M. "June" Burrough Jr., and a sister, Jeana Dugger. Mrs. Holland was a member of Borderview Christian Church and a former employee of Raymond's Restaurant and T.P.I. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Karen Holland, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two granddaughters, Katie and Allison Holland, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four sisters, Ruth Proffitt and Susie Warren, both of Elizabethton, Grace Cassell, Salina, Kan., and Faye Laflamme, Las Vegas, Nev.; and six brothers, Jack Burrough, Carl Burrough, John Burrough, Jim Burrough and Steve Burrough, all of Elizabethton, and Walter "Bud" Burrough, Lewisville, Texas. Rev. Lucian "Tiny" Lawson, 78, 1205 Hillside Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Rev. Lawson was a native of Hancock County, Tenn., and the son of the late William E. and Virginia Herrin Lawson. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, four sisters and several nieces and nephews. Rev. Lawson had made his home in Elizabethton for the last 45 years. He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ and a retired employee of Tri-State/Inland Containers, Inc. He was also a pastor for the past 45 years, serving in various churches in the area. Survivors include his wife, Celesta Pearl Barrett Lawson, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, E.L. and Jeanie Lawson, Tampa, Fla., and Bill Lawson, Elizabethton; two daughters, Frances McCloud, Kingsport, and Patricia McKinney, Elizabethton; two brothers, Earl Lawson and Ransome Lawson, both of Rogersville; a sister-in-law, Ruby Barrett of California; two brothers-in-law, Victor Barrett and Arnie Barrett, both of Surgoinsville; and seven grandchildren, Keith, Dustin and Matthew Lipford, all of Piney Flats, Darby, Carrie and Matthew Lawson, all of Tampa, Fla., and Brittany Lawson, Elizabethton. Virginia Morris, 92, 449 Bunker Hill Road, Bluff City, died Wednesday, October 20, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Morris was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late James Albert and Rebecca Crow May. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Morris, in 1971, two daughters, Grace Reed and Patsy Oliver, and two sisters. Mrs. Morris had lived in Sullivan County for the past 45 years. She was a member of the Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Morris and Joe Morris, both of Bluff City, and Fred Morris, Elizabethton; two daughters, Florence Miller, Bluff City, and Ann Parlier, Elizabethton; and two brothers, Frank May and Ed May, both of Elizabethton. Dr. Leta E. Gattshall Cates, 42, 5883 Highway 19E, Hampton, died Sunday, October 17, 1999, at her residence following a short illness. Dr. Cates was a native of Goodland, Kansas, and had resided in Montgomery, Ala., for 12 years before moving to Tennessee recently. She was a daughter of Wayne and Carol Johnson Gattshall of Goodland, Kansas. Dr. Cates was a graduate of Fort Hayes College, Fort Hayes, Kansas, and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University. She taught in the Kansas public schools and at Troy State University School of Nursing in Montgomery, Ala. She served on active duty with the U.S. Army Veterinary Services from January 1987 to September 1992 and was discharged from the reserves with the rank of Major. She practiced with the Vaughn Road Veterinary Clinic in Alabama, and was an active member of the Central Alabama Veterinary Association and the Alumni Association of Kansas State University. Dr. Cates was a member of the Center Street Baptist Church of Goodland, Kansas, and attended Oakdale Baptist Church in Alabama, serving as a class teacher and teacher in Vacation Bible School. Survivors include her husband, Frank A. Cates, of the home; one son, James "Jim" Frank Cates, of the home; one daughter, Mildred "Millie" Carol Cates, of the home; four brothers, David Gattshall, Thornton, Colo., John Gattshall, Tonganoxie, Kansas, Lee Gattshall, Valley Center, Kansas, and Alvin Gattshall, Freeport, Texas; two sisters, Karen G. Hooker, Kanorado, Kansas, and Ruth Gattshall, Valley Center, Kansas; and her Tennessee in-laws, Rev. Mr. Elliott was a 1967 graduate of Cloudland High School and was retired due to disability as a construction worker. He attended the Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Marie Sheets Elliott; three daughters and sons-in-law, Glenna and Tim Mink, Brenda and Brian Hill and Gilda and Troy Emore, all of Elizabethton; one brother, Arthur Elliott, Hampton; two sisters, Peggy Reynolds, Traper, Va., and Judy Tipton, Elizabethton; two grandsons, Austin Emore and Gage Mink; one step-grandson, Jeff Hill; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Gilda Sheets, Hampton. Mr. Stout was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of Kenneth Lee and Rosemary Fleming Stout, Elizabethton. Mr. Stout was a member of Southwestern Baptist Church, Johnson City. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Franklin Fleming. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his maternal grandmother, Oakley T. Fleming, Elizabethton; four brothers, Robert Stout, Jonesborough, David Stout and Steve Stout, both of Johnson City, and Scott Stout, Elizabethton; one sister, Michelle Stout, Elizabethton; and one uncle, William R.J. Mrs. Bailey was a native of Bluff City and the daughter of the late Preston and Ada Hodge Vestal. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James H. Bailey, and one daughter, Patsy Campbell. Mrs. Bailey was a member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Greer and Sharon Gilbert, both of Elizabethton; one son, Wade Junior Bailey, Elizabethton; two brothers, Wayne Vestal, Hampton, and Bill Vestal, Piney Flats; and one half-sister, Doneita Vestal. Warren G. Blackburn, 78, 10912 Santa Clara, Lamont, Calif., died Wednesday, October 13, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, Calif. Mr. Blackburn was a native of Butler and the son of the late Robert W. and Edna McCloud Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn had lived in California for the last 20 years. He was of the Baptist faith and had worked in the Farm Irrigation System for the last 20 years. Survivors include one brother, Dennis Blackburn, Elizabethton; one sister, Mytrice Clarkson, Covington, Ky.; and special friends, Joe and Geraldine Russell, Bakersville, Calif. Miss Byers was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Sidney G. and Lassie Pearl Sheets Byers. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Irene Byers, a brother-in-law, Roy H. Timbs, and a nephew, Chad Edward Byers. Miss Byers was a member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church and a homemaker. Survivors include four sisters, Nola Timbs, Hazel "Tince" Buckles and Ruth Roark, all of Elizabethton, and Mandy Freemon, Piney Flats; a special niece, Sandy Timbs, Elizabethton; and five brothers, Carl Byers, Ray Byers, John Byers, Terry Byers and Jerry "Jiggs" Byers, all of Elizabethton. Ezekiel "Zeke" Julian, 75, 409 Orchard Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, October 15, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Julian was a native of Carter County and the son of the late P.H. and Nellie Hughes Julian. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Roy and Pierce Julian, one sister, Georgia Pittman, and one foster son, Jimmy Mottern. Mr. Julian was a member of West Side Christian Church and a retired employee of Pharmaceal Laboratories. He was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166 and a former P.O.W. He worked as a volunteer at the V.A. with Prisoners of War, and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Frances Mottern Julian, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Frank Taylor, Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Tammy Julian, Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Evans Julian, San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Winnie McClain, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Chad Taylor, Elizabethton, Chase, Chelsea and Cherish Julian, all of Charlotte, N.C.; and eight foster children, Mary France, Bobbie Seifert, David, Alfred, Ronnie, Eddie and Billy Mottern, and Sherry Mottern Hudson. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. Lawrence Allen Nave, 47, 103 Clark Drive, Johnson City, died Monday, November 8, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Nave was a native of Washington County and a son of Lawrence L. Nave, Johnson City, and the late Anna Belle Long Nave, who died September 20, 1997. Mr. Nave was a 1970 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was formerly employed at Mr. B's Catering, and was also a musician. He attended the Buffalo Valley Christian Church. Survivors, in addition to his father, include a sister and brother-in-law, Rose Anne and Bill Howell, Johnson City; and three aunts, Mrs. Juanita Shepherd, Titusville, Fla., Mrs. Katherine Bartlett, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Amanda Rasar, Johnson City. Hilda Nowlin Smith, 56, Grovewood Lane, Titusville, Fla., died Sunday, November 7, 1999, at Parrish Medical Center. Mrs. Smith was a native of Natchitoches, La. She moved to Brevard County in 1964 from Columbus, Ga. Mrs. Smith was employed for 25 years as a teacher for gifted students for the Brevard County School Board. She was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Jim Smith, Titusville, Fla.; two sons, Skip Smith, Tampa, Fla., and Jay Smith, Darien, Ill.; a sister, Kay Johnson, Picayune, Miss.; and a brother, Rodgers Sherwood Nowlin, LaMargue, Texas. Jessie James Tucker, 75, 3064 Highway 11E, Lot #22, Bluff City, died Sunday, November 7, 1999, at his residence. Mr. Tucker was a native of Washington County, where he had lived most of his life. He was the son of the late William and Betty Street Tucker and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Cherry Mae Tucker, in 1990. Mr. Tucker was a World War II Army Corporal, decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Service Medal, and the African, European and Middle Eastern Service Medals. He was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority, where he was employed as an iron worker, and was a member of Sunset Village Baptist Church, Bristol. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Belcher Tucker, of the home; four sons, Larry Tucker, Maryville, James H. Tucker, Johnson City, Richard Tucker, Limestone, and Bradley Tucker, Jonesborough; two daughters, Teresa Dugger, Limestone, and Barbara Bowers, Elizabethton; a sister, Mae Rosenbaum, Limestone; and six stepsons, Steve, Michael, Gregory and Rick Belcher, all of Bristol, Timmy Belcher of Michigan, and Joey Belcher, Nashville. Leona Tetrick Winton, 87, 83 RiverCliff Road, Rogers, Ark., died Tuesday, November 9, 1999, at her residence following a brief illness. Mrs. Winton was a native of Kansas City, Mo., and the daughter of the late Glenn and Letha Gilbraith Tetrick. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Winton. Mrs. Winton was a retired employee of Stouffers Corporation of Chicago. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Janet Thompson, Rogers, Ark., and Mrs. Judy Pertle, Little Rock, Ark.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don Tetrick, Elizabethton. She was a daughter of Clifford Hamilton and stepdaughter of Arley Hamilton, both of Elizabethton, and daughter of Helen Startin, Greenwood, S.C. Mrs. Yacker was an employee in Grant Accounting at East Tennessee State University. She attended First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Irwin S. Ms. Matherly was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William Thomas and Delia Sims Matherly. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Adkins, and three brothers, Sam, Clayton and Bate Matherly. Ms. Matherly attended the Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Markham Fenner, Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Lesa Barnett Simpson, Stephen L. O'Sullivan and W. Mrs. Austin was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Charles and Josie Braswell Chambers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, G.C. Austin, in 1995, a brother, Clarence Chambers, a grandson, Chad McKeehan, and her stepfather, George Henegar. Mrs. Austin was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and a member of Millers Grove Church. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Mildred Harrell and Patsy and Ralph Mullis, all of Elizabethton; a son, Charles Austin, Elizabethton; three sisters, Pearl Babb, Dorothy Andes and Mary Henegar, all of Elizabethton; four granddaughters, Connie Collins and Maggie Austin, both of Elizabethton, Regina Tucker and Patti Townsend, both of Johnson City; four grandsons, Ron Harrell, Johnson City, Bill Austin, Elizabethton, Charles Austin II, Elizabethton, and Eddie Miller, St. Louis, Mo.; two special nieces, Sue Arnett and Kathy Henegar; and two special nephews, Roger Henegar and Carl Henegar. Edward W. Lyons

Edward Wiley Lyons, 87, formerly of 1600 Dixon Street, Elizabethton, died Friday, November 5, 1999, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mr. Lyons was born April 11, 1912, in Old Fish Springs, the son of the late Jerry Turner and Mary Abby Mathis Lyons. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Lyons Jennings, and a brother, Guy Lyons. Mr. Lyons joned the Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Haynesworth. He also served with the National Guard at Fort Devens, Mass., during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166 where he served as a member of the burial detail for over 50 years. He retired after 50 years of service from North American Rayon Corporation. Survivors include his wife, Elma Knight Lyons, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary "Bobbie" and Walter Brown and Vickie and Chester Little, all of Elizabethton; and a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Donna Lyons, Huber Heights, Ohio. Mrs. Minnie Marlow O'Day, 89, 1739-1/2 West "G" Street, Elizabethton, died Sunday, November 7, 1999, at Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City, following a short illness. Mrs. O'Day was a native of North Wilkesboro, N.C., but had lived most of her life in Elizabethton. She was a daughter of the late William Harrison and Etter Barnett Marlow and was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond R. O'Day, in 1977, two brothers and three sisters. Mrs. O'Day was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Raymond Lee O'Day, Brewer, Maine, and James Edward O'Day, Fairfax, Va.; three brothers, Orville Marlow, Elizabethton, Willie Marlow, Johnson City, and Rufus Marlow, Hampton; a sister, Virgie Miller, Butler; two grandchildren, Steven O'Day, Brewer, Maine, and Carol Ann Arey, Bangor, Maine; and a great-granddaughter, Mariah Arey, Bangor, Maine.
