LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEATH NOTICES FROM 2004

Oliver H. Newman III, 55, passed away May 15 in Nashville. A Halls native, he was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Frances Newman. Survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Barbara Newman; nephews, Craig and Chris Newman. Memorials may be made to Comprehensive Care Center, 345 24th Ave. N., Nashville, TN, 37203.

Carl Cash “Cary” Ragan IV, 22, died May 14 due to an auto accident. He was an employee of Fuddruckers Knoxville and would have graduated from ITT on June 15. He attended the Church of Christ. Survivors include parents, Karen and Carl Ragan; grandmother, Margaret Rodery; special friends, Jeremy Barrett and Aaron Thompson; godfather, Paul Brimi. Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

Ronald D. Rolen passed away May 19 at Ft. Sanders. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include son, Ronnie Williams of Fountain City; daughter, Rhonda Grace of Alcoa; three grandchildren; brothers, Billy Ray Rolen, James Rolen; sisters, Barbara Davis, Yvonne Burnett, Caroline Daugherty. Walter Lee Simpson, 83, of South Knox, passed away May 15 at Baptist Hospital. A Methodist, he retired from Charles Tombras Advertising in 1967. He received more than 350 local, national and international awards for creativity in advertising. preceded in death by grandson, Bill Irwin Jr; daughter, Carolyn Simpson; wife, Wilma Simpson. Earl H. Smith, 80, of Fountain City, passed away May 18 at NHC Health Care Ft. Sanders. He was a member of Smithwood Baptist Church, a 32nd degree Mason and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He was preceded in death by wife of 60 years, Octavia “Tave” Jefferis Smith. Charles Earnest Thompson, 80, passed away May 15. preceded in death by wife, Cathleen, and grandson, Arthur Charles Muse II; Survivors include wife, Edith Thompson; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Visocky, Bettie and David Kirby, Elizabeth and Ralph Best; sister and brother-in-law, Sammie and Bryant Tatum; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Reba Shelton Underwood, 94, passed away May 15. Charter member of Antioch Baptist Church, she was retired from Knoxville City Schools. She was a member and past matron of Knoxville Chapter No. 69 Order of Eastern Star and was also an active member and past president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. preceded in death by husband, Roy Underwood; brothers: Luther and Clyde Shelton; sisters: Goldie Mynatt, Zettie Damewood, Frona Mynatt. Daniel L. “Danny” Warwick, 53, of Maynardville, passed away May 16 at St. Mary’s. Member of Hubbs Grove Baptist Church and former Marine Corps reservist. Active member of Kerbela Temple and Union County Shriners, past master with J.C. Baker Lodge No. 720, member of American Legion, former coach and president of Union County Little League. Survivors include wife, Martha Bridges Warwick; son, Drew Warwick; daughter and son-in-law, Keely and Joseph Riddle; parents, Bruce and Peggy Warwick; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Stacey Warwick; brother-in-law and wife, Don and Pat Bridges. Maynard Dodd “Bill” Bailey, 81 of Knoxville, passed away April 29 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. He was a member of Kirk Hills Presbyterian Church and local 102 Plumbers and Steamfitters. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include wife, Eloise Bailey; sons and spouses: Doug Bailey, Michael and Teresa Bailey, Ernie and Chris Bailey; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson. JoAnn Combs Bates, R.N., 70, of Corryton, died April 25 at St. Mary’s. Member Corryton Church. Retired from St. Mary’s Medical Center after 39 years of service. preceded in death by husband, Fred Bates; brother, Wallace Combs. John Samuel “Sam” Bruce, 65, of north Knoxville, passed away April 24 at Baptist Hospital. He was an Air Force veteran, stationed in Japan. Patsy Cramer, 78, of Knoxville, passed away at ElmCroft Assisted living in Halls. She was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church and the manager of Citizen Saving and Loan in Damascus, Md., for many years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. Horace Preston Holley, and her second husband, Charles B. Cramer. Survivors include daughters Terry Lynn Holley and Mary Elizabeth Holley; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. H. Garland Davis, 90, of Powell, passed away April 25 at his home. Thelma Sims Fisher, 97, of Knoxville, passed away April 29 at NHC Ft. Sanders. She was a member of Central Methodist Church of Knoxville and was preceded in death by her husbands, the Rev. T. James Porter Fort III, 64, died in Fountain City on Dec. 19, 2003. He had a degree in business from the University of Tennessee and worked for many years in automobile sales. He is survived by his son, Jeff P. Fort, of Brooklyn; his sister, Susan McAdoo; and his brother, David Fort. A small family service was held last week at Norris Lake. Michael Lee Knuckles, 38, of Powell, passed away April 29 at St. Mary’s after a brave battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Powell High School and UT, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany as a lieutenant. He was an avid hiker, scuba diver and loved to travel. William Jasper Martin, 87, of Knoxville, died April 20 at Shannondale Health Care Center. He was a Member of Second Presbyterian Church. He was a chemical engineer and retired from Union Carbide. Thomas C. Metcalfe Sr., 89, of Heiskell, passed away April 22 at his home. He was retired from U.S. Steel and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 806 of Harlan, Ky. preceded in death by his wife, Margie, and son, Robert.
