FERRELL, STEVEN JOE, 57, died Sunday, May 25, 2014. He was born in McMinnville, Tennessee and served in the US Marines. He was employed by Americare Services and was preceded in death by his parents, William Ferrell and Betty Joann Veal Hayes; son, Jake King; and a sister, Treva Ferrell. He is survived by his wife, Amy Hobbs Ferrell; daughter, Kylee Ferrell; sister, Sherry Williamson; brothers, Clyde and Tommy Ferrell, Johnny Hayes; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held Friday, May 30, at the Little Johnny Myers cemetery on Gap Road in Altamont with Minister Coy King officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to help with funeral expenses. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.

LAYNE, E. W., 82, died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at his home with his family close by his side. He was a US Army Veteran, cattle farmer and road construction foreman in South America. He served on the Board of Grundy County Farm Bureau and the Soil Conservation Board. He was born in Palmer, Tennessee on December 17, 1931 to Robert Dewitt Layne and Esper Woodlee Layne who preceded him in death along with his brother, Joe. P. Layne and sister, Lola Carrick. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lucretia “Sissy” Cannon Layne; 3 sons, Russell, Lloyd (Candida) and Lowell all of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; sisters, Ruth Curtis and Ruby McRae, Tracy City; sister-in-law, Wyllene Layne of Coalmont; grandsons, Preston and Connor Layne. There was no visitation or service. Arrangements were madeby Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

SHERMAN, TIMOTHY, KIRK, 43, passed away Wednesday May 21, 2014 after a 2-month battle with colon cancer. He was employed by Tuftco (TFI) in Palmer and was a member of the Swiss Historical Society and enjoyed searching for Native American Artifacts. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean Scissom Sherman. He is survived by his wife, Katie Stocker Sherman; father, Bernard (Brenda) Sherman; sons, Robert Alfred and Jacob Osborne Easterly; daughter, Joselyn Ahndra Sherman; brother, Stan (Stefanie) Sherman; sister, Kim (Ed Burde) Tyson; nephews, Tanner and Lawton Sherman. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 24 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Jonathan Hankins officiating. Burial was in Swiss Colony Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

FRENCH, EARLDENE METCALFE, age 74, of South Pittsburg, TN, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 16, 2014 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Joseph Maurice Metcalfe; son, Timothy Lee Metcalfe and her parents Jim Earl and Clara Irene Layne Thomas; sisters, Thelma Cox, Leila Mae Purdy, Robena MaGourik and Jean Ann Raucakus; brothers, James R. Thomas and Billy Thomas. Survivors include her husband Bobby French; her daughter, Myra (Mike) Reilly; sons, Joseph Metcalfe and Brian Metcalfe; sister, Mary Johnson; brother, Frank Lee (Carolyn) Thomas. Memorial services were held Wednesday, May 21 in the chapel of Cumberland Funeral Home with Reverend Boyd Thomas officiating. Burial was in Summerfield cemetery in Monteagle, TN. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

CAMPBELL, BOB ALTON, age 60, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Southern Tennessee Medical Center in Winchester. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Della Campbell; brothers, Edward “Duxie, ” J. C. and Check Campbell; sisters, Juanita Nunley and Anita Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Campbell; son, Eddie Campbell; daughter, Kristi (Henry) Byers; brother, Estes Campbell; sisters, Brenda Kilgore and Mildred Bean; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Lindsay Byers, Edward Lee Alton Campbell and J. D. Campbell; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 18 in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Mike Rigsby officiating. Burial was in Coalmont Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

BYERS, JIMMY RAY, age 78, of Monteagle, TN, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at The Bridge in Monteagle. He had worked for many years at Monteagle Silo Company and Sewanee Silica and was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a son of the late John Berry Byers and Mattie Ethel Davis Byers. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Byers; sons, Bobby (Audrey) Byers, Cowan; Dennis (Tammy) Byers, Pelham; sisters, Mary Jennings and Virginia Hall, both of Monteagle; grandchildren, Derick, Josh, Jonathan, Robert and Brianna; great grandchildren, Jacob Nathaniel, Avery, Attelyhn, and Hayden; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, May 16 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Paul Tittle officiating. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

TURLEY, WILLIAM, JR., age 85, of Tracy City, TN, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014 in Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was a native of Whitwell and was preceded in death by his wife Eliza Faye Turley; son, Porkey Turley. He is survived by his children Michael Turley, Judy Cagle, Brenda Andrews and Sandy Turley; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 15 in the funeral home chapel. Burial was in Hobbs Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

BAKER, CHRISTINE, 73, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014. She was born in Palmer, Tennessee to Arthur and Clemmie Hobbs Sanders who preceded her in death along with her son, Charlie Kilgore. She is survived by her husband, Billy Baker; sons, Dean (Diane), Kenneth (Tammy) and Wayne (Jackie) Kilgore; daughter, Misty Kilgore; grandchildren, Lataea, April, Renee, Christopher, Donna, Shala, Teesha, Kaylin, Jacob and Kendalinn; great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 14 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Brett Meeks officiating. Burial was in Fall Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to help with funeral arrangements. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

GROSS, LEONARD FLOYD, 93, went home to be with his Lord, Monday, May 12, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a US Army veteran of WWII, Deacon of Grace Baptist Church and charter member of the Beersheba Springs Rescue Squad and Fire Department. He was born in Gross’ Cove on April 7, 1921 to John and Frances King Gross who preceded him in death along with his wife, Loretta Walker Gross; sisters, Ollie Bell Tate, Stella Coppinger, Helen Wanamaker, Elizabeth and Beatrice Gross; brothers, Fred and J. L. Gross. He is survived by his son, Rev. Johnny (Diane) Gross; daughter, Linda (Donald) Boyd; grandchildren, Chris Boyd, Tracy Jennings, Kim Fults and Amanda Eubanks; 10 loving great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, May 15 at the Grace Baptist Church with Ministers Johnny Gross and Dwight Walker officiating with burial to follow in the Grace Chapel cemetery with full military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.

TURNER, ROBERT ESTON, 88, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014 at his home. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Altamont and was a US Navy veteran. He was born in Haynes City Florida on June 30, 1925 to Charlie Woods and Flora Elizabeth Fults Turner who preceded him in death along with his, son, Robert Earl Turner; sisters, Juanita Davis, infant sister Edna Turner; brother, Charles Turner.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Jean Killian Turner; sons, Danny, Larry and Ricky Turner; sister, Lois Hayes, Utah; brothers, Kenneth Turner, Illinois and Douglas Turner, Texas; grandchildren, Krysti Erin Stuhlman and Lora Lynn Whitman; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 14 at the Mormon Church in Altamont with Bishop Aaron Barrett officiating. Burial was in Altamont cemetery with military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.

LAYNE, JOHN DAVE, age 84, of Tracy City, TN, made his journey home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 9, 2014. He was born to Bartley and Almedia Newsom Layne on September 23, 1929 and is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Louise Layne, and Irene Layne Baucom; brothers; Emiel, Paul, Loys and Norman Layne; great granddaughter, Addison Alexandria Kilgore. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret Coppinger Layne; daughters Nelda Layne Hargis and Connie Layne Jackson; sons Wendell and Coy Layne of Tracy City; brother, James Layne, Tracy City; sister, Patricia Myers, Altamont. Dave’s love for family and God made him an exemplary role model to 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and countless other family and friends whom were blessed to know him. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Apostolic Church for 64 years where he served as treasurer and Deacon. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10 in the funeral home chapel with Elder Franklin Hill and Reverend Michael Hill officiating. Burial was in Gregg Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Foster and Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

LADD, VIRGINIA LUCILLE, 71, of Tracy City, TN, went home to be with her Lord Friday, May 9, 2014 at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents Johnny (Bear) and Frances Marie Rollins Westerfield; son, Billy Matthew Floyd; brothers, James Matthew Westerfield, George Edward Westerfield, Charlie Rollins, and Glen Rollins; sisters, Lee Inez Wilder, Johnsie Kathrine Gilliam, Clara Louise Westerfield, and Linda Sue Barish. Survivors include her children Johnny Edward Westerfield of Monteagle; Christopher Donovon Ladd of Monteagle and Charles Dewight Ladd of Sewanee; sisters, Nellie Ruth Shrum of Tracy City, Mildred Annice Summers of Tracy City, Glenda Jean Westerfield of Coalmont, and Pattie Newsome of Georgia; brothers, Joe Fred Rollins, Dennis Sutherland, and Johnny Rollins; grandchildren, Cora Marie Dees, John Nicholas Westerfield, Payton Cole Westerfield, Christian Chayce Ladd, and John Dylan Ladd; great grandchildren, Grant and Garret Dees, Halee, Makenzie, Jadon, Hadassah Westerfield; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. There will be a graveside memorial service at 4:00 P.M. Friday, May 16, 2014 at Monteagle cemetery with Reverend Ralph Shrum officiating. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

SHIRLEY, EDITH LAYNE, age 102, of Layne’s Cove near Pelham, TN passed from this life on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Willows of Winchester Health & Rehab Center. She was born October 30, 1911, a daughter of the late W. T. and Hattie Partin Hill. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Abe Layne and her husband, Bob Shirley; brothers, Joe and Osler Hill; sister, Lucille Brown; grandson, Gary Layne. She had worked for many years at Wonder Cave where she was a guide for the many thousands of visitors who stopped at the cave every year. She is survived by a son, Sherman Layne of Layne’s Cove; daughters, Virginia Zimsek, Streetsboro, Ohio and Teresa Ann Layne, Maryland; grandchildren, Sharon Hunt, Teresa Pilcher and Daniel Zimsek; great grandchildren, Lacy Hunt, Alex Hunt and Amber Layne; sisters, Fermenda Hassebrock of Layne’s Cove, Mary Lee Johnson, Tracy City and Margaret Jordan, Beaumont, Texas; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

KNIGHT, HALLIE F., 82, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014. She was born in Palmer, TN on April 16, 1932 to Gordon and Agnes Banks James who preceded her in death along with her husband, Horace “Gid” Knight; sister, Polly Tucker; brothers, Clarence Allen, Tommy, Stanley and Alvin Lee James. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa (Tommy) Worthington; son Nathan (Pat), Bruce (Shannon), Paul (Doris), Clifford (Linda) and James (Dana) Knight; sister, Margaret Ward; brother, Marshall James; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 13 in the funeral home chapel with Minister Brett Meeks officiating. Burial was in Brown’s Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.
