Ester Rebbeca ‘Becky’ Weigel ODESSA — Ester Rebbeca “Becky” Weigel, 52 years, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Mrs. Weigel was born in Hobbs, N.M., to George Sherrod and Mrs. Ellen Bankston. Graveside services will be Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Rose Hill cemetery in Odessa. Survivors are her fiancé, Richard Kawalec of Odessa; son, Eric Crispin of Odessa; daughters, Heather Spadoni and Audra Crispin, both of Odessa; sister, Carol Brock of Carlsbad, N.M.; brothers, Vernon Overcash of Roanoke, Va., and Lewis Overcash of Rocky Mount, Va.; stepbrother, Craig Crispin of Odessa; uncle, Oliver Bankston of Smithville; grandchildren, Katelyn Mathis, Madison Spadoni, Trenity Spadoni, Mason Crispin and Christina Yaney, all of Odessa; two nephews of Odessa, three nieces of Odessa and two great-neices of Odessa. Services under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home. Mickey Bailey ODESSA — Mickey Stewart “Stu” Bailey, 53, passed away Friday, May 17, 2002 at Hospice House in Odessa. He was born September 25, 1948, to Keith and Novilene Bailey in Big Spring, Texas. Mick graduated from Permian High School in 1967. He then went on to attend the University of Houston, then TCU in Dallas. He received his Bachelors Degree at UTPB and in May 2001 received his Masters Degree in Education from UTPB. Mick Served in the Air Force as a computer programmer and following his tour of duty was employed by E Systems in Dallas, Texas. Mick returned to Odessa in 1987 where he taught computer classes for 8 years at Odessa College, and later at the Career Center. He was an avid and talented musician, and played in several bands throughout Texas. Mick was a gentle and loving soul and will be missed greatly by his family and many friends. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, May 20 at First United Methodist Church in Odessa with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jimmy Braswell. Visitation begins today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Bailey; daughter Kira Bailey of Odessa; two step-daughters, Lori Berryhill of Odessa and Diana Atchison of Midland, parents Keith and Nova Bailey of Odessa, brother Bob Bailey and wife Debbie of Odessa, nephew Gregg Bailey of Odessa, three step-grandsons, Ryan and Zachery Berryhill and Jacob Loague all of Odessa; and one step granddaughter, Quincie Atchison of Midland. Joseph V. ‘Joe’ Pfluger ODESSA — Joseph Pfluger, 50, of Odessa, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday May 16, 2002. Joe was born on May 30, 1951, in San Angelo, Texas, to Vernon and Charlotte Rau Pfluger. As a little boy he received rehab in Gonzales, TX, in 1953 for polio. He attended schools in San Angelo, graduating from Central High School in 1969. He attended TCU, graduating with a BA in History and Spanish. He attended Brite Divinity School earning a Masters of Divinity. Joe served as pastor in churches in Plano, TX, Raton, NM, and Seiling, OK. He attended the Chaplaincy program at Hendricks Hospital in Abilene for a year. In between his freshman and sophomore year at TCU, Joe attended University Madrid in Madrid, Spain studying Spanish. Joe became an accomplished linguist, learning to speak several different languages. He returned to the University of Texas at Arlington in 1982 to earn a master’s degree in counseling and social services. He worked in counseling and family services in Bedford for six years, in San Angelo working at River Crest Hospital as Pastoral and Drug and Alcohol counselor and in Odessa as family service and Permian Basin Dialysis counselor. Joe’s main things in life were the love of his God, family and church. He was an avid reader and collector of model trains, tea pots and everything. He loved listening to classical music and singing. We will miss his laughter and mischievous smile. Joe was preceded in death by his father Vernon L. Pfluger and his nephew, Ray Pfluger of Eldorado, TX. Survivors include his mother, Charlotte R. Pfluger; sister, Kaye Pfluger of San Angelo; brother, Charles Pfluger and wife Helen of Eldorado, Texas; nephew, Dan Pfluger and wife Stacy of South Bend, Indiana; aunts, Edna Keeling of Albuquerque, N.M., Jeanne Hitch of San Angelo, Texas and Frances Phillips and husband Si of Kerrville, Texas; numerous cousins and his beloved dog, Mesiji. Services will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at First Christian Church with the Rev. Ben Hubert officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount cemetery. Arrangements by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Winston Barclay MIDLAND — Claud Winston Barclay, a longtime community leader during the boom days of Midland, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Midland Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born September 18, 1925, in Spur, Texas, to Erma Louise West Barclay and Claud William Barclay. Winston’s parents moved to Petersburg, Texas when he was very young. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1943 and entered the U.S. Coast Guard where he served during World War II. He completed duty in 1946 as a Radioman 1st Class. While Winston was in the Coast Guard, his parents moved back to Spur. After his discharge, he returned to Spur where he met and married Dorthea (Dot) Karr on January 26, 1947. In June 1950, he graduated from Texas Technological College at Lubbock with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was later licensed as a Professional Engineer in Texas. After graduation from Tech, he moved to Midland where he began employment with Texas Electric Service Company (now TXU Electric Co.) as a Power Sales Engineer. He moved to Odessa in 1955 as Local Commercial Manager and was promoted in 1960 to Odessa Local Manager. In 1966, he was transferred to Midland as Western Region Manager where he remained until his retirement in 1987. During his long career with Texas Electric Service Company, he worked tirelessly for civic projects and community improvement. Winston was named “Boss of the Year” by the Jaycees in both Midland and Odessa. He was chosen as “Engineer of the Year” by the Permian Basin Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Barclay was instrumental in the formation of the Midland Industrial Foundation and Midland Housing, Inc. and served as President of both Boards for several terms. He was the principal force in the acquisition of land for the establishment of the Midland Industrial Park. Winston also served as president of both the Midland and Odessa Chambers of Commerce as well as vice president of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. He was chairman of the Board of both the High Sky Children’s Ranch and the Junior Achievement of Midland. His activities included working for the construction of the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum and he was chairman of the furnishings committee. Winston was honored as an outstanding Midland Citizen during the Texas Celebration of the Sesquicentennial. He had belonged to both Odessa and Midland Rotary Clubs and was also on the Board of Trustees of the Midland Memorial Hospital. Winston served in many other community activities too numerous to mention. Throughout his career, Winston strongly believed this West Texas area should diversify its business and industry from the oil-based economy and that water resources were vital to its survival. One of his last projects before retirement in 1987 was involvement to gain approval for the construction of the Stacy Dam and Ivie Reservoir to bring additional water resources to West Texas. Barclay was a keen and insightful business leader. His last appearance on behalf of TXU was an invitation to attend the early 2002 announcement changing the name of the Company to ONCOR. When asked for a statement he replied, “It doesn’t make any difference what the name is. Keeping the lights on is what we have always been about.” Winston enjoyed several hobbies. In their travels across the nation he collected antique clocks and restored them to good working order. He also enjoyed working on antique cars and restoring them to as near original condition as possible. One of the last vehicles he began to restore was a 50 year old fire engine brought to West Texas from the Ft. Worth area. He later donated it to an area museum. In his retirement years, Winston and Dot enjoyed traveling in their recreational vehicle. Later in his retirement years he became an artist in “his own right” doing paintings in watercolor medium. Winston’s devotion to his family was unlimited — especially to his children and grandchildren. He will be long remembered by those who knew him. Winston is survived by his wife Dot of 55 years. Three children — Claudia Jane Owen and husband Ross of Colleyville, Texas, Catherine Dot Smith of Lubbock, Texas, Clay Winston Barclay and wife Sherry of Midland; 6 grandchildren — Amanda Catherine Owen, Jane Elizabeth Owen, Colleyville; Stewart Charles Smith, Clark Winston Smith, and Brian Barclay Smith, Lubbock; Chance Walker Barclay, Midland and his brother Joe Max Barclay and wife Margie of Lubbock, Texas. Winston and Dot are longtime members of the First Baptist Church of Midland. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church-Benevolence Fund, Allison Cancer Center or Midland Hospice. Pallbearers will be Dean Cox, Dave Dorchester, Johnny Fields, Bob Goodwin, James Mims, Curtis Saylor, Dean Smith, and Carl Trim. Honorary Pallbearers will be Thane Akins, Ted Battles, Spencer Blocker, Bill Collyns, LeRoy Stewart, Bob Burkett, James B. Henry, Pete Janssen, Tom Lawson, Joe Reeder, Bill McGrew, Bill Griffin and many other friends. Visitation will be Sunday at Ellis Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, May 20, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Dyer officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Billy Jack Shrum ODESSA — Billy Jack Shrum, 72, went home to be with his Savior on Friday, May 17, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born May 27, 1929, to John Edgar and Molly Louise Shrum in Snyder, TX. Billy was self-employed as a mechanic for 50 years, retiring in 1996. In 1997, he moved to Odessa from Waco. He was loved by all and was known as “Billy Jack” or “Pops.” There is a family visitation scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, May 20, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Dewey Bevins of Zion Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Billy’s mother and father, wife, Sarah Hall, and beloved son, Billy E. Shrum, all preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, John Shrum, of Odessa; daughter, Dollie Riggs Boddie of Odessa; brother, John Shrum of San Bernardino, CA; three sisters, Ida B. Throneberry, Mary Dempsey, and Byrdie Nesbit, all of Waco; three grandchildren, Angela Jones, Shawn and Brian Shrum; five great-grandchildren, Amanda and Briana Lawhone, Cassandra and Sarah Shrum, and Dawson Hogan; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in Billy’s memory to the Little People of America. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Ralph Woods ODESSA — Ralph Woods, 75, of Odessa died Friday, May 17, 2002 at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sherwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Hiser officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Mr. Woods was born in Beckville. He moved to Odessa in 1947. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was owner of Falcon Environmental Systems, Inc. He enjoyed fishing and raising horses. He loved his family. He was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. He is survived by his wife, Linda Woods; son, Johnny Harris and wife Heather of Odessa; daughters, Rebecca Allen and husband Bud of Odessa, Susie Ellis and husband Derek of Victoria, Lisa Ogle and husband Mike of Helots; brother, James Roy Woods of Carthage; and four grandchildren, Jeremy Harris, Whitney Ellis, Brittany Vaughan and Caden Vaughan. Derwana V. McDaniel ODESSA — Christianity does not exempt one from death. It only ensures triumph over death. Moses died, Paul died, Jesus died, and all must die. There is no other way of entrance into our heavenly Father’s house. Derwana V. McDaniel, daughter of the late Robert Quarker and Lessie Sims, was born May 9, 1976, in Midland. Derwana was a faithful member of Greater St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church until leaving Odessa to attend college where she united with Greater Faith Baptist Church in Mesquite. Derwana graduated in the top 10 percent of her class from Permian High School in 1994. She received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from DeVry Institute where she met and married Johnny E. McDaniel on July 12, 1997. Preceding her in death are her daughter, Devro McDaniel; father, Robert Quarker; paternal grandfather; maternal grandmother; two uncles and one aunt. Derwana leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Jathan McDaniel and Quadrick Walker, both of Garland; her loving mother, Lessie Sims; stepfather, the Rev. C.E. Sims, both of Odessa; a brother, Ron Quarker of Midland; grandfather, Lawrence McMaryion and wife Ola Mae of Compton, Calif.; grandmother, Annabelle Quarker of Atmore, Ala.; great-great-aunt, Paira Lee McCulloch of Los Angeles; three nieces, DeShalia Quarker of Odessa, Rionna Quarker and Nykeah Quarker, both of Midland; two nephews, Shakahn Quarker and Kasual Quarker, both of Midland; a godchild, Quinqueiara Dewberry of Odessa; a host of loving aunts, uncles and relatives; and countless friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Greater St. Luke Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe L. Terry Sr. and Joe L. Terry Jr. officiating. Alfred Joseph ‘Joe’ Carpenter PECOS — LCDR Alfred Joseph ‘Joe’ Carpenter, USNR, RET., 85, of El Paso, formerly of Pecos, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at White Acres Nursing Home in El Paso. He was born in El Paso, Texas on October 13, 1916. He graduated from El Paso High School and Texas College of Mines. He worked for Fabens Motor Company and McCormac Tractor and Implement Co. He retired from the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Murphy DD-603 during the Invasion of Normandy, including the bombardment of Cherbourg from June 6 through June 25 in 1944. He moved to Pecos in the early 1950s where he owned the Ginger Blue Ranch until the early 1970s. He also retired from Texas Employment Commission where he was manager from 1963 to 1978. In Pecos, he was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post, the American Legion, the Pecon Gun and Rifle Club, and Leroy’s Coffee Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ninya and Joseph Carpenter; his father-in-law, Jim McCormac; his wife of 56 years, Marion McCormac Carpenter; and his daughter, Linda Carpenter Faulkner. He is survived by his brother, Andrew H. Carpenter, of Indian Valley, Calif.; his daughter, Nancy Tyler and her husband Harry of El Paso; and grandchildren, Christopher and Natalee Tyler, of El Paso. His special companions were his huskies, Rio, Fresca, and Presley. Special thanks for the loving care provided by Dr. G.E. Martin and White Acres Nursing Home. Services were Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 at Harding Orr McDaniel Funeral Home in Pecos, with interment following at Fr. Bliss National cemetery with military honors. Pepito was a born Oct. 29, 1980, in Odessa to the late Francisco Trujillo and Maria Elena Segovia Minjarez. He was married to Rosie Soto. He was a Christian and a laborer. He is survived by his wife, Rosie Soto of Pampa; daughter, Ashley Nicole Hernandez of Pampa; mother, Maria Elena Segovia Minjarez of Odessa; brother, Frank Minjarez Jr. and wife Maria of Odessa; sisters, Alma Salgado and husband Marion Jr., Maria De Jesus Minjarez, Carol Minjarez and husband Joe Patino, Maribel Ulate and husband Arturo, Nina Rodriguez and husband Frank, Sandra Lujan and husband Sabino, Gaby Segovia and husband Eddie, Adriana Vargas and husband John and Romina Montes, all of Odessa; grandmother, Francisca Hernandez of Ojinaga, Mexico. He is preceded in death by his father, Francisco Mirjarez Sr.; sister, Guadalupe Tovar; grandparents, Cipriano and Guillerma Minjarez; grandfather, Urbano Segovia; and nephew, Aron Ulate.
