FORT STOCKTON — Gregorio Chavez Ortega, 66, of Fort Stockton, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, in Fort Stockton.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Ruben Reyes officiating. Burial will be at Fort Stockton Catholic cemetery. Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home.
He was born in Alpine.
SURVIVORS, Wife, Maria Ortega of Fort Stockton; sons, Manuel Ortega, Luis Ortega and James Ortega, all of Fort Stockton; daughter, Lisa Hernandez of Fort Stockton; brothers, Barney Ortega of Dallas, Benito Ortega and Israel Ortega, both of Roswell, N.M., Adolofo Ortega of Artesia, N.M., Enrique Ortega of Las Vegas, N.M., and David Ortega of Carlsbad, N.M.; sisters, Dominga Rodriguez and Emma Barbosa, both of Lovington, N.M., Anita Franco of Carlsbad, N.M., Eva Barra of Denver, Colo., Lucy Valenzuela of Alpine and Pema Matta of Arizona; and six grandchildren.

Fernando Zarate Sr.
MCCAMEY — Fernando “Nano” Zarate Sr., 72, of McCamey, a retired oilfield pumper, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, in the McCamey Hospital.
Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Nilo Nalugon officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
He was born Los Evanos. He was Catholic.
SURVIVORS, Wife, Rosa Zarate of McCamey; sons, Luis Munoz of San Antonio, Robert Munoz and Fernando Zarate Jr., both of McCamey; daughters, Corina Navarrete, Debra Sanchez and Belinda Cavazos, all of McCamey of Norma Crossland of Midland; brother, Rubio Zarate Sr. of McCamey; 27 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

STANTON — Jerry Dan Patrick, 58, of Stanton, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, in San Antonio.

IRAAN — Maria Ninfa Quintero, 75, of Iraan, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at the Crane Memorial Hospital.

ODESSA — Adrian W. Wallace, 77, of Odessa, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at the Hospice House.
Services are pending with Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Eugenia Casarez
SEMINOLE — Eugenia Casarez, 79, of Seminole, a homemaker, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Seminole.
Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Reynaldo Reyes officiating. Burial will be at the Gaines County cemetery. Arrangements by Boyer Funeral Home.
She was born in Leming. She was Catholic.
SURVIVORS: Sons, Jaun Casarez and Raymond Casarez, both of Seminole, Manuel Casarez of Lamesa, Valentine Casarez of San Angelo and LeRoy Casarez of Roswell; daughters, Sophia Grimaldo, Maria Betancourt, Carmen Ontiveros, Sylvia Alvedrez and Maria Antonio Alcon, all of Seminole, Elena Jimenez of Amarillo, Beatrice Alemon of Big Spring and Linda Garcia of Carlsbad, N.M.; brothers, Thomas Lozano and Pablo Lozano, both of Lamesa; sister, Otilia Casarez of Lamesa; 56 grandchildren; and 58 great-grandchildren.

ODESSA — Memorial services for Don Eberle, 31, of Midland will be at 6 p.m. today at the Chuckwagon Gang Barn in Odessa.
Arrangements by Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.

Jade Farley
ODESSA — Jade Farley, infant daughter of Jeremy Farley and Ruby Zavala of Odessa, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Odessa Regional Hospital.
Graveside services were Friday at the Ector County cemetery Rose Hill Babyland section. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
SURVIVORS: Parents; brother, Orayan Farley and Jeremy Farley Jr., both of Odessa; grandparents, Rosa Zavala and Albert Zavala, both of Odessa, and Cindy Farley of Abilene.

Jane Laffoon
IRAAN — Jane Laffoon, 72, of Iraan, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
Services are pending with Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.

Joe Ornelas
ODESSA — Joe Ornelas, 58, of Odessa, or “Joe the Barber,” as he was called by most of his friends, passed away on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003. Joe was born on June 19, 1945 in Colorado City to Herman and Sotera Ornelas. He married Raquel Martinez on January 23, 1965. Joe and Raquel were best friends for 38 years and were virtually inseparable.
Joe came to Odessa in 1965 where he began to work at Graham’s Barber Shop and moved to University Barber Shop and took over in 1969. In 1976, he and his wife, Raquel, joined together and opened Stylist Beauty and Barber Shop. Joe was known as the “Flat Top Expert.” He was a very happy man. He had a joke for everyone that sat in his chair. He was a good listener and gave advice to anyone who would listen. He also enjoyed playing checkers. He had many checker buddies in Andrews and Odessa. Joe’s family was his life. He took pride in his family and their accomplishments. He devoted his life to raising his family and looking after them.
His father precedes Joe in death. Survivors include his wife, Raquel Ornelas of Odessa; sons, Joel Ornelas and wife, Joylynn, and Joe Julian Ornelas Jr., and wife, Lisa, both of Odessa; daughters, Laura Saldana Martinez and husband, Roy, of Coyanosa, Texas, and Celina Sais and husband, Joe, of Odessa; mother, Sotera Ornelas of Colorado City; brothers, Matt Ornelas of Snyder and Herman Ornelas of Del Rio; sister, Paula Gonzales of Austin; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two nephews that he loved as his own, Joe Ornelas III and wife, Delia, Carlos Ornelas and wife, Lisa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Edward Saldana, Felipe Saldana, Raymond Ornelas, Mark Ornelas, Roy Martinez Jr. and Stephan Martinez. Honorary pallbearers will be Joel Ornelas Jr. and Christopher Sais.
The Ornelas family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Doran, the staff at Medical Center Hospital, HealthSouth of Midland and the staff at Home Hospice of Odessa. A very special thanks to Uncle Pete and Aunt Esther Cordova for all their help.
A Public Talk was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Elder Fred Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

James Wesley ‘Red’ Butler
ABILENE — James Wesley ‘Red’ Butler passed away in Del Rio, Texas, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003.
‘Red’ was born in Moran, Texas, Oct. 23, 1910, to Trannie and Ola Butler. Butler worked for Grisham Hunter Corporation for 54 years and was president of Delaware Basin Joint Venture until his retirement. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Hoba Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ethel; his parents; brother, Thomas Weldon; and sister, Albera McDonald. His son, J.D. Butler and wife, Kay, of Odessa, daughter Donna Langford and husband, Bill, of Del Rio, survive him. Grandchildren include Kayla Zeigenbein and husband, Robert, of Odessa, LaDonna Adcock and husband, Trent, of Katy, Malasa Finical and husband, Bobby, of Allen, Doug Langford and wife, Heather, of Hacienda Heights, Calif. Great-grandchildren include Ryan and Sarah Finical and Dustin and Travis Zeigenbein. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Calvary Baptist Church, 1165 Minter Lane, with Jerry Poteet officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16.
Pallbearers will be Doug Langford, Robert Zeigenbein, Trent Adcock, Bobby Finical, Mike Sapp and Bill McDonald. Honorary pallbearers will be Lowell Fine, J. Lee Pruitt, Bobby Martin, Bill Morrison, Bill Rister, T. J. Key, Coy Warren and the Knights of the Roundtable.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in his memory to Calvary Baptist Church, 1165 Minter Lane, Abilene, TX 79603, his church home for 53 years.

Leigh Brendel
VICTORIA — Leigh Gaddy Brendel, 50, of Victoria died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, in Victoria.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Revs. Steve Pope and Russell Matthews officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens cemetery. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home.
She was born in McAllen. She was Episcopalian.
SURVIVORS: Husband, William B. Brendel Sr., M.D.; sons, William Brian Brendel Jr., Patrick Davis Brendel, Ross Owens Brendel and Hunter Lee Brendel, all of Victoria; father, Howard Edsel Gaddy of Kermit; mother, Mary Owens Westphal of Bedford; brothers, Phil Charles “Chuck” Gaddy of Indianapolis, Ind.; four stepsisters; and one stepbrother.

Gwendolyn Cleaver
ODESSA — Gwendolyn Faye Cleaver, 53, of Odessa, a nurse, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Texas and Clements Church of Christ with Relford Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Ector County cemetery. Arrangements are by Martinez Funeral Home.
She was born in Caldwell and was a life-long resident of Odessa.
SURVIVORS: Son, Anthony Tyrone Cleaver Sr. of Odessa; daughter, Minka Rachelle Oldham of Odessa; brothers, Henry Oldham and James Oldham, both of Odessa, Tommy Oldham of Long Beach, Calif., and Hugh Oldham of Fulsom, Calif.; sisters, Orna Mae Walker of Topeka Kan., Carnis Johnson of Caldwell, Laverne Williams and Alma Walker, both of Odessa; and three grandchildren.

Roosevelt Covington
MONAHANS — Roosevelt Covington, 75, of Monahans died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church with Jeppie Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Monahans Memorial cemetery. Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home.
He was born in Hamlin. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Son, Calvin Sullivan of Monahans; daughter, Mary Covington of Odessa; brother, James Covington of Hamlin; and one grandchild.
