James ‘Jim’ Box

AUSTIN — James L. ‘Jim’ Box, 85, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, Feb. 19, 2004, and went home to Glory to be with our Lord.
Jim was born on June 4, 1914, in the small town of Wichita Falls, Texas, to James Amos and Hattie Cooley Box.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona Lucille ‘Luci’ Jordan Box, of 62 years and his eldest daughter, Mona Bourke.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Deidra Tyler and husband, Jack, of Austin; Kristy Artz and husband, Warren, of Australia, Lisa Coscla and husband, Matt, and their children, Berkley and Emory, of Coppell, Texas, and Trisha Bourke of Edmond, Okla.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Riverbend Church in The Smith Family Chapel, 4214 Capital of Texas Highway North, Austin, TX 78746. (512)327-3540.

Wayne D. Holmes

ANDREWS — Funeral services for Wayne D. Holmes, 62, of Odessa will be at 12 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Odessa with Rev. A. Dean Kelm, Pastor, officiating.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, in the Andrews West cemetery in Andrews.
He died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center in Brownwood.
He was born January 9, 1942, in Wewoka, Okla., to Claud Elmer Holmes and Fleacy Arvada Heath Holmes. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1961 and has lived in Odessa since 1961. He married Donna Mayree Beekman on June 10, 1959, in Lamesa. He had worked at Frost Bakery and 7-Eleven in Odessa. He retired as a plant operator for Amoco after 28 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Odessa.
He is survived by his wife, Donna M. Holmes of Odessa; two sons, William Lee Holmes of Harlingen and Kenneth Wayne Holmes of Spofford; three daughters, Sherry Walker of Buda, Pamela Dennis of Shasta Lake, Calif., and Dawn Marlena Koenig of Odessa; one brother, Clifford Holmes of Andrews; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 824 East 18th Street, Odessa, Texas 79761.
Services are under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.

Franklin Whitt Lewis

ODESSA — Franklin Whitt Lewis, 49, of Odessa passed away Friday, March 12, 2004, at his residence. He was born on February 21, 1955, to Pasty and R.P. Lewis.
Frank graduated from Odessa High School in 1973. While in high school, he was a captain on the basketball team and also received awards in baseball. He earned all-state in welding and after graduation he worked in Alaska as a pipeline welder.
Frank’s many enjoyments in life included fishing, hunting, collecting antiques, golfing and panting. He was currently employed at Lewis Casing Crews, his family’s business.
Frank is survived by his two daughters and their spouses, Olivia and Robert Dutko of San Antonio, Ashley and Warren Williams of Odessa; his mother, Patsy Lewis of Odessa; sister, LaDonna Lewis Weaver of Odessa; brother, Patrick Lewis of Odessa; grandchildren, Payton and Lauren Williams; and many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, R.P. Lewis.
Frank was a Christian and served as a deacon for several years. He also preformed missionary work in the Philippines where he led many souls to the Lord. He will be greatly missed by his two beloved grandchildren and the many friends and family who loved him.
A family visitation will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jack Oden officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Milton James Massey

ODESSA — Milton James Massey was born in Eden, Texas, on October 26, 1927, and entered into rest in paradise on March 15, 2004. He was the sixth of the eleven children born to William McDuffy Massey and Lizzie Jo Prosise Massey.
Milton always treasured the memory of growing up with very loving parents, two very special brothers and eight wonderful sisters.
Milton’s seventy-six years were spent in service of his family and friends. He was a member of Sherwood Church of Christ, where he was a charter member since 1957 and had the privilege of serving as a deacon for thirty-eight years.
In 1946, Milton graduated from Eola High School, in Eola, Texas. He served in the United States Air Force from 1948 through 1952 with the rank of Staff Sergeant and Special Ratings of Skilled Instrument Technician and Semi-Skilled Supply Technician. He was a graduate of San Angelo College in 1954, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Geology from Sul Ross State University in 1956 and a Master of Education Degree from Sul Ross in 1961.
Milton married his college sweetheart, Donna Rae Neely, on January 21, 1956. They were blessed with two loving daughters, Rebecca Sue and Sharon Marie and later a dear son-in-law, Cary Alan Dwyer, and four precious grandsons, Daniel Massey Dwyer, Nathan James Dwyer, Kristopher Ryan Price and Kevyn Alexander Price.
In addition to serving as a public school teacher in the Ector County Independent School District for twenty-nine years, Milton served in many other capacities during his lifetime.
During his youth he worked on the family farm, as well as the ranches of relatives. Later he worked as a service station attendant, a power press operator, a rough neck, a derrick man, an assistant college dormitory director and assistant to the college book store manager at San Angelo College, an assistant dormitory director and later a dormitory director and superintendent of campus cottages at Sul Ross and a Radiation Well-Logging Engineer for McCullough Tool Company in Odessa. While teaching school, he also worked part-time as a contract carpenter, painter, school bus driver, a salesman at Sears and a night watchman.
Milton’s favorite works were being a servant in the church, as a deacon assigned to assisting widows and shut-ins, helping with building maintenance, serving as a Bible class coordinator, being a loving husband, dad, father-in-law and PaPa, as well as a teacher, a friend and a servant to many people with whom he came in contact. Milton had a penchant for baking and cooking all sorts of dishes for the sick, shut-ins, widows and those with special needs. He delighted in appearing at someone’s door with a special dish or dessert in hand.
Mr. Massey was preceded in death by his parents, William McDuffy Massey and Lizzie Jo Prosise Massey, as well as his sister, Janice Marie Massey Kelley.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Neely Massey of Odessa; his two daughters, Rebecca Sue Massey Price and her two sons, Kristopher Ryan Price and Kevyn Alexander Price, of Port Republic, Maryland, and Sharon Marie Massey Dwyer and husband, Cary Alan Dwyer, and their two sons, Daniel Massey Dwyer and Nathan James Dwyer of Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa; and his ninety-five year old mother-in-law, Johnnie Neely of Alpine, for whom he enjoyed caring for many years. He is also survived by two brothers, Harold Massey and wife, Natalie, of Fredericksburg and Marvin R. Massey and wife, Jean, of Houston; as well as seven sisters, Thelma Ellis of Eden, Judy Buie of Arlington, Wilma Breen and husband, Bob, of San Angelo, Jo Ella McMillan and husband, Bill, of Pecos, Jeann Millsap and husband, Del Gene, of Blackwell, June Strebeck and husband, George, of San Angelo and Doris Taylor and husband, Tommy, of San Angelo; and a host of nieces and nephews and their families.
The memorial service for Milton Massey will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Sherwood Church of Christ in Odessa with John Driggers officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Marie Moore

ROARING SPRINGS — Graveside services for Marie Moore, 91, of Midland were held Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Roaring Springs cemetery in Roaring Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador.
She was born August 10, 1912, to Emmett and Lou Morrison Jeffcoat in Pilot Point, Texas. She died March 12, 2004, in Midland, Texas. She married Luther Moore on December 24, 1930, in Motley County, Texas. They were together more than 62 years. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her only brother, two daughters, one son, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by one son, B.J. Moore and wife, Martha, of Odessa, Texas; one daughter, Fae Hall and husband, Ed Hall, of Burnet, Texas; one sister-in-law, Darlene Jeffcoat of Bellville, Texas; one niece, Jessie and her husband, Bob Natoli, of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a faithful friend and companion for the last several years, Bruce Hanson of Midland, Texas.

LaFaye Minton Plumlee

ODESSA — LaFaye Minton Plumlee, 83, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born January 14, 1921, to Henry Lee and Vesta Mae Minton in Elkhart, Texas. She was raised in Houston. She was a business woman and a homemaker, a very courageous and well-loved lady. She was an Odessa resident since 1963, moving here from Hobbs, N.M.
She was the co-founder of Rio-Specialty, and A-1 Gasket, and retired in 1992. She was a member of the El Nina Court of the Ladies Memorial Shrine and the Desk and Derrick Group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Vesta Minton, and her husband, Fred Plumlee.
Survivors include her sons, James Michael Plumlee of Odessa, Dr. John Patrick Plumlee and wife, Laura, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lanny Plumlee and wife, Polly, of Odessa; her daughter, Fredda Plumlee Moore and husband, Bobby, of Odessa; brothers, G.B. Minton of Houston and Jimmy Minton of Fort Worth; sisters, Mary Gray and Betty Kocian, both of Houston; nine grandchildren, Geordie Mason of Kent, Ohio, James Plumlee of Walnut Creek, Calif., Taner Drake of Odessa, Shera Drake of San Antonio, Brandon Plumlee of Houston, Clint Plumlee of Odessa, Jonathan Plumlee of Jacksonville, Fla., Cali Stanton of Abilene and Clay Stanton of Odessa; six great-grandchildren, Kennah, Morgan and Connor Mason, and Cayeleigh, Spencer and Savannah Drake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord with Rev. James Otterness and Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pall bearers will be Bill Nichols, Carlton Roy, Randy Smith, Wayne Wagnon, Mark Kocian, Gary Gray and Patrick Gray.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Jose Soto Ortiz

ODESSA — Jose Soto Ortiz, 64, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born on March 19, 1939, in Cd Acuna Coahuila, Mexico, to Norberto and Juanita Soto. He married Juana Campos on August 13, 1970, in Mexico.
He is survived by his wife, Juana Soto of Odessa; sons, Jose Abel Ortiz and wife, Enriketa, of Fort Worth, Jose Ortez Jr. and wife, Rachelle, Marcos Ortiz and wife, Mary Ann, Jaime Ortiz, Juan Ortiz, Isaias Ortiz and wife, Erika, David Ortiz and wife, Denise, and Luis Miguel Ortiz, all of Odessa, Jose Luis Ortiz of Cd Acuna Mexico; brother, Francisco Ortiz and wife, Auguroa, of Rock Springs; sisters, Paula Ortiz of Cd Acuna Mexico, Carmen Corona of Rock Springs, Maria Lopez and husband, Daniel, of Odessa; and 11 grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Joseph Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.

Cleo (Christopher) Richards

KERMIT — Cleo (Christopher) Richards died Saturday, March 13, 2004, in Austin.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Cooper Funeral Chapel in Kermit. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.
Cleo Richards was born in Frankston, Texas, August 14, 1915. Cleo married Clifford Richards on September 15, 1933. They moved to Kermit, Texas, in 1952. Clifford died in Kermit in October 1976.
All six of their children graduated from Kermit High School.
Cleo lived in Kermit until 1996. Cleo worked as a “pink lady” at Winkler County Memorial Hospital for several years as well as Southern Maid Donuts and Lowes Deli during her residence in Kermit. She is a member of Belvue Baptist Church.
Cleo is survived by her sister, Vivian Cook of Odessa, Texas; and six children, Jimmy and wife, Patti, of Hemet, Calif., Charles and wife, Joy, of Austin, Texas, Dan and wife, Marcia, of Velrico, Fla., Elwanda and husband, Frank Douglass, of Dallas, Texas, Terry and wife, Joyce, of Van, Texas, and Sharron and Douglas Molloy of Bridgeport, Texas. Cleo has 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Christine Beasley Cook

ODESSA — Christine Beasley Cook, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
Christine was born in Laneville, Texas. She graduated from North Texas University in Denton. She was a schoolteacher, teaching for 50 years and retired from Gonzales Elementary School August 31, 1978. She was a charter member of the Odessa Retired Teachers Assoc., a member of the Texas State Teachers Assoc., the Pioneer Study Club and the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She also was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was Secretary-Treasurer of the Couples Class for several years. She was a member of the Odessa Branch of the American Assoc. of University Women. She loved reading and playing bridge.
She married Glen Cook on June 3, 1950. He preceded her in death February 10, 1990. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her sister, Lucile Bellican of Odessa; niece, Virginia Sills, and nephews, Ross Beasley and Charles Beasley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Tamplin officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials maybe made to the First United Methodist Church, Parks Methodist Retirement Village or the Church of your choice.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
