Alberto R. Rodriguez

ODESSA — Alberto R. Rodriguez, 62, died Monday March 29, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Mr. Rodriguez was born April 4, 1941, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, to father, Piedad Rodriguez, and mother, Apolinar Rodriguez, whom both preceded him in death.
Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sofia Rodriguez of Odessa; three daughters, Belinda Reynosa and husband, David, of Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, Manuela Grado and husband, Jesus, and Micaela Rodriguez and husband, Raymond Terrazas, both of Odessa; two sons, Piedad Rodriguez and wife, Joanna Molina, and Armando Ramos and wife, Almarosa, both of Odessa; three sisters, Antonia Samaniego of Monahans, Anita Montez and Manuela Valenzuela, both of Odessa; three brothers, Mauricio Rodriguez and Enrique Rodriguez, both of Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, and Gabriel Perez of Odessa; 13 grandchildren, Jessica Grado, Kimberly Grado, Jesus Jose Grado, Francisco Chavez III, Marcus Reynosa, Vi Anca Reynosa, Andres Reynosa, Albert Ray Cobarrubio, Isiah Cobarrubio, Carolyn Cobarrubio, Brianna Rodriguez, Desirea Garcia and Roman Garcia, all of Odessa; and two great-grandchildren, Sebastian Almance and Destiny Valenzuela, both of Odessa.
Services are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.

Richard “The Duke” Smith

ODESSA — Richard “The Duke” Smith went to his Heavenly Rest on Sunday, March 28, 2004, in the loving arms of his wife, Alyson, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born on Sept. 1, 1938, to Bellwood and Lillian Smith.
Rick was an avid student of the Bible. He loved camping and was renowned for his barbecue. He will be remembered for his generosity of spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother Robert.
He will be greatly missed by the following survivors: devoted wife, Alyson; mother-in-law, Barbara Greene; sister-in-law, Judy Smith; sister, Sue and husband, James Edington; brother, George Barnard Smith and wife, Phyliss; daughter, Pam and husband, Chris Simmons; sons, Richard Wayne Smith, Stephen and wife, Cheryl, and Timmothy Veigle; stepdaughter, Jennifer Chapman; stepson, David Mallow and wife, Tiffany; and several grandchildren.
Mr. Smith generously donated his body to science.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Laura Deadrick officiating.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Estella Heredia

ODESSA — Estella Olivarez Heredia, 77, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at her residence in Odessa. She was a housewife.
She was born on April 16, 1926, in Encinal, Texas, to the parentage of Julian and Manuela Olivarez.
She is survived by her daughter, Anna Belle Heredia of Odessa; and son, Rafael Heredia Jr. of Odessa.
Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Martinez Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
Arrangements are by Martinez Funeral Home.

David Ratliff

ODESSA — God took home our beloved David Ratliff, 28, a superintendent for Manpower on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital. He came into our lives May 19, 1975. He was born to David and Donna Ratliff. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle.
During his time, he touched many lives with his warm smile and kind deeds many going unnoticed. We will miss him terribly, knowing he is with the Lord is our only comfort. We love you David.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, C.D. and Gloria Ratliff; uncle, Jackie Ratliff, and several cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Shannon Kay Ratliff; two beautiful sons, Michael and Blake; parents, Donna and David Ratliff; two brothers, Darrell and wife, Christy, nephew, Taylor, and brother, Dustin Ratliff, all of Odessa. Grandparents Martha Lambert and Grady Mingus; mother-in-law, Cathy Hoffman; sister-in-law, Lynda Wright; nephews, James and Quinton Wright, all of Odessa; and many other close relatives.
Pallbearers will be Dean Bosse, Dale Bosse, Steven Pepper, Larry Pepper, Kenny Lowe and Walter Massengale.
Graveside services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at 10 a.m. with Father Mark Woodruff and Deacon Alan Neff officiating.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Vina Hodges Koelzer

ODESSA — Vina Hodges Koelzer, 72, of Odessa, born Aug. 22, 1931, in Tampa, Fla., to Giles Benjamin and Nora Lowanza Downing Hodges, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Mrs. Koelzer moved to Odessa in 1994 from Arizona. She was a Retired Nurses Aide and a devoted Christian and active church member of Belmont Baptist Church.
She is survived by daughters, Dolly Kolb of Haughton, La., and Shirley Marie Smith of Arkansas; sons, John Michael Richardson of Monticello, Ark., Wade Richardson of Arlington, Texas, and Joe Benefield Jr. of Buckeye, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren including Cara Gill of Big Spring; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Velma Pardo of Tampa, Fla., Vivian Hodges of Charlotte, N.C., and Vera Webb of Asheville, N.C.; brother, John Hodges of Land-O-Lakes, Fla.; son-in-law, Mac Statham of Big Spring, Texas; sister-in-Christ, Esther Class from Belmont Baptist Church; and best friend, Sulema Chavez.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Joe Benefield Sr. and Michael Koelzer; and daughter, Melody Ann Statham.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Belmont Baptist Church with the Reverend Bryan S. Saffle officiating. Burial will be private at a later time.

Silvia Elena Velasco

ODESSA — Silvia Elena Velasco of Balmorhea, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at University Medical Center in Lubbock due to injuries sustained Feb. 14, 2004.
She was born in 1957 in Ojinaga, Mexico, to Donato and Juana Velasco. She was the oldest of six children. Silvia was Catholic.
She was a longtime resident of Jal, N.M., where she attended and graduated public schools. Silvia attended Northern New Mexico Community College where she received a certificate in cosmetology. Silvia opened a beauty salon in Kermit upon graduation, which she ran for 15 years.
Silvia then attended Odessa College studying Culinary Arts. She was employed at the Reeves County Detention Center as a food service officer at the time of her passing.
She was active in the Masonic Lodge as an Eastern Star. One of Silvia’s favorite past times was cooking pastries. She will be missed by family and friends.
Silvia is survived by her mother, Juana Nunez Velasco of Odessa; brothers, Donato Velasco of Santa Fe, N.M., Oscar Velasco of Odessa, Juan Velasco of Corpus Christi and Alex Velasco of Amarillo; sister, Diana Velasco of Odessa; 10 nieces and nephews; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Silvia was preceded in death by her father, Donato Velasco Sr.
Mass will be held Wednesday morning in Ojinaga, Mexico, at Funeraria de Valle. Interment will follow in Ultimo Refujio cemetery.

Janet Warren

KERMIT — Janet ‘Net’ Warren, 63, of Kermit went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at her residence in Kermit. She was born on Tuesday, March 5, 1940, to the late Virgie Della Carey and Ernest Roy Savage in Pampa, Texas.
Janet married A.J. Warren on Feb. 22, 1961, at Community Church in Kermit and has been longtime residents since. A devout member of Grace Temple Baptist Church, she loved helping other people, going to the lake and cooking out. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Allen James ‘A.J.’ Warren of Kermit, Texas; one daughter, Darlene Eaton and husband, Danny, of Sonora, Texas; one sister, Maxine Boatwright of Kermit, Texas; one brother, Don Savage and wife, Marie, of St. George, Utah; one grandson, Justin Eaton and wife, Thea, of Austin, Texas; one granddaughter, Kara Eaton of Sonora, Texas, and her fiancé, Terry Chaumont, of Louisiana; brothers and sister-in-laws, Dorothy and Troy Colley of Odessa, Texas, Gene and Iris Warren of San Angelo, Texas, Margaret and Bill Scudder of Kermit, Texas, Laura and Jerry Russell of Arlington, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Craig Warren, on June 11, 1991, and her brother-in-law, Basil Boatwright, on Dec. 23, 2002.
Pallbearers will be James Burns, Fred Lewis, Edwin Ditto, Steve Ditto, Bob Burke and Bob Shipley.
Service will be held at Grace Temple Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Jess Little and Pastor Gordon Oglesby officiating. Interment will follow at the Kermit cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to Grace Temple Baptist Church, 220 S. Olive, Kermit, TX 79745 or to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas St., Odessa, TX 79761.
Services are entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor, Kermit, Texas.

Jesse Bryan Farris Sr.

ODESSA — Jesse Bryan Farris Sr., 74, of Odessa went to join his Lord on Friday, March 26, 2004. Jesse passed away in Val Verde County, Texas. He was born on March 3, 1930, in Kenmundy, Ill., to Jesse and Florence Farris.
After the death of his father, he moved from Illinois to San Angelo as a child. He later moved to Rankin and graduated from Rankin High School in 1947. He graduated from Sul Ross University in 1952. He went directly from college into the Army and was stationed on Okinawa during the Korean War. On April 24, 1961, he was united in marriage to Martha Murphy in Rankin. They moved to Odessa in October, 1962, where he was employed by Dresser Security for 24 years until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, he managed the family ranching and oil business in Upton, Sterling and Irion counties.
Jesse was a man of strong Christian faith and a member of Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and known lovingly by his grandchildren as “Poppy.” He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois; and son, Kevin; father, Jesse Farris; mother, Florence McGill; stepfather, A.B. McGill; and sister, Nancy McGill.
He is survived by Martha Farris, his wife of 43 years; sons, J.B. Farris Jr. and wife, Mary, of Carrollton, Clay Farris and wife, Roni, of Midland, Darrel Farris and wife, Brenda, of Odessa; daughter, Donna Jones and husband, Steve, of Odessa; brother, Emmett McGill, and sister, Ruth Kaufman, both of Satellite Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Amy Jones, Jill Stephen and husband, Alan, Wesley Farris, Melissa Farris and Mikelle Farris, all of Odessa, Christy and Emily Farris of Carrollton; great-grandson, Jake Stephen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ in Odessa with Roy Smalling officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were J.B. Farris Jr., Clay Farris, Darrel Farris, Steve Jones, Wesley Farris and Alan Stephen. Honorary pallbearer was great-grandson Jake Stephen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Geraldine M. “BeBe” Harrison

ODESSA — Geraldine Harrison, 89, a school teacher, loving wife and mother and proud grandmother joined her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 30, 2004.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Bushart officiating. Graveside will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth with the Rev. Kevin Strempke and Rev. Melissa Nichols officiating.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Geraldine was born in Grandview, Texas, to William M. Morris and Mary M. Morris, whom both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Joe C. Harrison, and by one brother and two sisters.
Geraldine was a descendent of one of Texas oldest pioneer families. She was a great-granddaughter of Young H. Hamilton, who served in the Mexican War and established Presbyterian churches in Hill, Ellis and Johnson counties.
She was a family descendent of Henry Smith, the first provisional governor of Texas.
Geraldine began her teaching career after graduating from Hill County Junior College in 1933 at a two-room rural schoolhouse in the community of Parker. After marriage and starting a family, she graduated from Texas Wesleyan College and enjoyed a long teaching career in the third grade with the Fort Worth Public Schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Fort Worth Classroom Teachers Association and Texas Retired Teachers Association and Fort Worth Retired School Employees Association.
She was a former member at Grace United Methodist Church in Fort Worth and Arlington Heights United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, where she was a dedicated Children’s Sunday School Teacher. Geraldine was a loyal member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Odessa. The family wishes to thank Home Hospice Odessa, and her caregivers Rosie Rodriquez and Velma Sanchez.
She is survived by her son, Joe C. “Corky” Harrison Jr. and wife, Jan, of Fort Worth; her daughter, Mary Kay Wooten and husband, Barry, of Odessa; grandchildren, Adam Harrison and wife, Beth, of Hurst, Kayla Lockie of College Station; step-grandchild, Kyle Wooten of Irving; special brother-in-law, Jimmy Jones of Fort Worth; special nieces, Peggy Robertson and husband, Lee, of Baytown, Polly Bates and husband, Sam, of Baytown; and several great-nephews and a great-niece and numerous cousins, friends and former students.
