Helmut Joachim, H.J., Jim Platen, Aka ‘The Colonel’

ODESSA - H.J. Platen passed away Monday, April 25, 2005, in his home with his wife and two daughters. He was very peaceful after suffering through a short but fearsome bout with lung cancer.
He was born to Ignacy Piotr and Maria Smolka Platen on July 7, 1928, in Hindenburg, Germany.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Platen of Odessa; his daughters, oldest, Marina Maffia and husband Bob, their children Yvonne and Olivia, of Nashua, New Hampshire, and his youngest daughter, Jennifer Platen of Portland, Oregon. Still in Germany, he leaves three brothers, Peter with wife Marita, Siegmar with wife Christe, and Heinrich with wife Liesel.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Owen Sharp officiating.
Growing up as the second son in a family of four boys, Helmut distinguished himself by excelling in school, while simultaneously getting into quite a bit of self-created mischief. On more than one holiday, Santa delivered more pieces of coal instead of toys into Helmut’s Christmas stocking for misbehaving more than all of his brothers put together. This never quite quelled his spirit. As he grew up, his success in school grew as did his desire for adventure. He learned to fly gliders at an early age. His parents might have approved, if they had been asked. H.J. forged the permission slip allowing him to learn. Somehow he got away with it, and became a pilot in no time.
Soon he was old enough to join the war effort. He knew he would have to delay finishing college because of the political times; it was then that he became a Luftwaffe anti-aircraft spotter for the German 88 Guns. When he was finally captured by the Americans in France, his prior education saved his life. Fluent in five languages, this secured him safely in the American POW camp where they had him serve as their valuable interpreter.
When the war ended, he finished his schooling at August-Vilmar Schule, Homberg (Bez.Kassel) Germany. He then worked for the American Consulate in Frankfurt as an interpreter for the rebuilding of Germany. In an unlikely twist, due to his job, to this day there still exists an Avenue named after H.J., for his help in naming of the new streets, Platen Strasse!
When Helmut immigrated to Canada in 1952, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He then worked as a purser on their cruise ships from British Columbia to Alaska.
Shortly thereafter, in like spontaneous character, H.J. made one of his most life changing decisions of all. Again acting with his gut instinct, he met and proposed to Fern Shirley Hosking, of Toronto, Ontario who happened to be vacationing in British Columbia. He knew her only three days! They were then given to correspond about their marriage plans for six months. Plans turned to reality, as of this past February, Fern and Jim were married 48 years.
In 1957, they gave birth to their first daughter, Marina. During this newlywed time, H.J. had been working in the insurance game. After a couple of years, however, he began what would be his lifelong romance with the automotive industry and the open road.
Starting out in automotive sales, he quickly worked his way through management. In the early ’60s, they relocated to Northern California where their second daughter, Jennifer, was born. But H.J. was not settled long. The family of four was relocated to Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, The Oregon Coast, and finally, West Texas.
Perhaps as an honorary title to all the work he had already dedicated to his chosen field, by the time he began his own business, he was affectionately and almost universally called “The Colonel” by all who knew him. By the 1970’s he began his own Automotive Management Consulting and Lecturing Firm. Although he would not drag his family even further all over the country with him as often as this new job demanded, his own business travel schedule was packed! Trips home were more difficult and less often scheduled in. No one could ever question his incredible work ethic. Once again, this new phase of his life fed into his sense of adventure.
Although he had already made his mark as a world traveler at a young age. By the 1970’s, up until this last year, he became a fixture on the roads of North America, filming every moment, monument and natural wonder our nation has to offer. He created, narrated and scored his professional quality films of his travels for his family and friends across the globe.
When The Colonel retired, he had time for more of his hobbies: still traveling to see family and friends and still documenting his travels on film; using his talents in the kitchen: master barbecuing; cooking gourmet German food; building his stamp collection; writing his 400+ page book of historical fiction - currently in rewrite;-)
Never lacking for a story, H.J. could capture an audience of strangers or friends within seconds. In his story telling, his phenomenal memory for detail, history and facts was evident. He could make you feel as if you were right there with him on his adventures and safaris. And if you had not taken his journey, you might secretly wish you had. Most people strive to find a place in life, finding life so much swimmingly bigger than they are. The Colonel found a way to be unquestionably much bigger than life.
Services were entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
