R.L. Flanagan

ROBERT LEE - R.L. Flanagan was born on October 3, 1927 in Comanche, Texas to Charles Aubrey Flanagan and Rosa Lena Scott Flanagan. He was the youngest of 3 children and was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Glen Aubrey Flanagan, and a granddaughter, Alaina Renea Maxcey.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Marie Flanagan; his sister, Mary Nell Salter of Comanche; two daughters, Margaret Lehr and husband, Richard of Odessa, TX and Renea Maxcey and husband, Wade of Iraan, TX; and one son, Randy Flanagan and wife, Camille of Robert Lee, TX. Grandchildren include John and Ellen Lehr of Odessa, Kagan and Weston Maxcey of Iraan, and April, Casey, and Cole Flanagan of Robert Lee, TX and San Angelo; one great granddaughter, Aubrey Nichols; and Aunt Coleta Fenley of Robert Lee. R.L. is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family especially wants to acknowledge Clay Allen for the support and love shown by him during R.L.’s long illness.
R.L. went to school in Comanche County and he graduated from Comanche High School at age 17, in 1944. At that time he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to San Diego for basic Training. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. After leaving the Navy, R.L. went to work for the Texas National Guard. Then in 1955, he entered Game Warden school for the Game and Fish Commission. Upon completion of this program, R.L. and family were sent to Lake Buchanan.
In 1959, R.L. and family transferred to Ballinger, Texas, where Margaret and Randy started school. Renea was born in 1962 and that year the family moved to Robert Lee where R.L. and Evelyn have lived for 43 years. R.L. retired from the Parks and Wildlife Department of 1985.
After retirement, he became a guide on Lake Spence, found more time for arrowhead hunting, and participated in numerous other hobbies. Always an avid outdoorsman he still holds the record for largest striped bass caught at Lake Spence, 35 pounds, 2 ounces. John Wayne was his movie hero, he loved to read about the Old West and was an avid reader of Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour novels.
He was known for his sense of humor and his sense of fairplay. He collected arrowheads and artifacts from childhood on and became quite knowledgeable on the types of arrowheads and their uses. He loved to show people his collection and talk about fishing, hunting and sports. He was often disgusted with the Dallas Cowboys, but he watched them anyway.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at VistaCare Hospice, especially Sharon, Terri and Susie, for the special care given to R.L. during his illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to VistaCare Hospice or a favorite charity.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the Robert Lee cemetery. Services are under direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.

Cleo E. Spalding

McCAMEY - Cleo E. Spalding, 93 of McCamey, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at her home in Dripping Springs, Texas.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 9, 2005 at the First Christian Church in McCamey with Reverend Jimmy Braswell and Reverend Claire Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Resthaven cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Cleo was born on March 4, 1912 in Waxahachie, Texas. She had been a longtime resident of McCamey, living there since 1928. She was a charter member of the First Christian Church where she was an active member. She was also a member of the McCamey Historical Society, as well a member of the Rebekah Lodge 169.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Jennie Lou Spalding.
Cleo is survived by her loving family, Evea Huffaker, Glenda Beth and Ron Hart, all of Dripping Springs; and Gary and Brenda Huffaker of Kyle; and numerous cousins.

Barton Roy Guyton

Brady - Barton Roy Guyton, 99, of San Angelo, passed away at his daughter Debra’s residence Monday, April 4, 2005, with his three children and son-in-law at his side.
He was born March 25, 1906, near Stamford to Naomi Jackson Guyton and Ernest Guyton. He married Imogene Harwell Dec. 15, 1948, in San Angelo.
Barton loved to talk about his family and neighbors and their time growing up around Fife and Rochelle; his time spent in the army during World War II; and his 39 years of working with Humble Oil (Exxon). He was an avid fisherman and amateur inventor, carpenter and mechanic. He was always offering to help someone, especially if it meant repairing something for them.
He was a member of the Exxon Annuitant Club of San Angelo. He delivered Meals on Wheels, until he was in his early 80s and he was an active member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church, until his health began to decline.
He was one of the kindest, humblest, most helpful and considerate persons. He was respected by everyone who worked for him in his different positions at Exxon. He retired in 1966 as a filed supervisor in Andrews.
Barton’s extended family, also, had the utmost respect, love and admiration for him. His grandchildren especially loved him. Barton celebrated his 99th birthday March 19 at Debra’s house with many family and friends. He leaves them behind with many fond memories.
Barton is survived by his three children, Larry Guyton and his wife, Jorene, of Weatherford, Brenda Wilke and husband, Bill, of Robert Lee, and Debra Cyr and husband, Paul, of San Angelo; his youngest sister, Bernadine Guyton of Belton. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Wendy Kirkland of Weatherford, Derek Guyton of Delaware, Chris and Jared Lindsey of San Angelo, Lauren Lindsey and Paul Cyr Jr. of Fort Worth, Todd Cyr of Charlotte, S.C., and Kristine Nall of San Angelo; nine great-grandchildren; and two more on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Imogene Harwell Guyton; and his five siblings, Marion of Los Gatos, Calif., John of Breckenridge, Bernice Farmer Lisenbee of Andrews, and Carmolete Rasco and Madeleine Davenport, both of Brady.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First Methodist Church in Brady with the Rev. George Lumpkin, of St. Luke’s Methodist Church of San Angelo, officiating with the Rev. Sheldon Johnson, of First United Methodist Church of Brady. Burial will follow at Rest Haven cemetery under the direction of Letherwood Memorial Chapels of Brady.
Pallbearers will be: Chris Lindsey, Paul Cyr Jr., Jason Kirkland, Kirk Boatright, Derek Guyton and Jared Lindsey.
The family wishes to thank everyone at VistaCare Hospice, especially Dale Sylvia, Helen, Penny, Ninfa, Rachel and Tina, who helped with Barton’s care this last year. They also thank his doctors, especially Dr. Neill, Pam and the rest of his staff. Larry, Brenda and Debra, also with to thank their spouses who loved and cared for Barton as they would their own parents.
Memorial may be given to St. Luke United Methodist Church of San Angelo, VistaCare Hospice or West Texas Rehabilitation Center.

Mary Ida Horn

Odessa - Mary Ida Horn, 77, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital.
The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, where Mrs. Horn will be in state.
She will be in state in Paragould, Ark., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, April 11, at Mitchell Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Memorial Gardens in Paragould, Ark.
She is survived by her husband, Verlon Horn of Odessa; son, Charlie Horn of Fort Worth; daughters, Mary Catherine Huse of Fort Worth, and Peggy Marie Van Horn and Patricia Jo Horn, both of Pleasington, Calif.; brother, Burin Dearin of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters, Javeen Therman and Margie Brewer, both of Paragould, Ark., and Pauline Moore of Piedmont, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Local services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Russell Reay Pardue

Odessa - Russell Reay Pardue, 33, of Odessa, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.
He was born June 11, 1971, in Odessa to his parents, Kermon and Lois Kaye (Outlaw) Pardue.
Mr. Pardue was a 1989 graduate of Odessa High School. He was employed as a Systems Administrator for Permian Distribution Co. in Odessa.
He was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Lassie Bell Gray.
Mr. Pardue is survived by his wife, Paula of Odessa; and his three wonderful children, Brittney Dawn, Briana Bell and Russell Reay Jr., “who will keep on swimming, ” all of Odessa; his parents, Kermon and Lois Pardue of Odessa; his sister, Melody Pardue of Odessa; his brother, Travis Wayne Pardue of Odessa; his grandmother, Faye Funk of Odessa, and his grandfather, John C. Outlaw of Odessa. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Westover Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Sharon Zeigler Vines

Odessa - Sharon Zeigler Vines, 43, of Odessa, passed away April 7, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born May 7, 1961, in Grayling, Mich., to Martin and Jean Zeigler. Sharon graduated Odessa High School in 1979 and Odessa College in 1989. She was a full-time mom to her Sara and Matt. She worked at Medical Center Hospital for 15 years and touched many lives during this time. We will truly miss her booming voice and big smile Sharon was especially proud of “Her” night shift.
She is survived by her husband, Stan Vines of Odessa; son, Matthew Vines of Odessa; daughter, Sara Smith of Odessa; parents, Martin and Jean Zeigler, both of Odessa; brothers, Michael and Larry Zeigler, both of Odessa; and sisters, Nancy Brixey, her twin, of Emory, and Toni McDaniel and Kim Benton, both of Odessa; and nieces and nephews Zane Zeigler, Tanner Brixey, Kyle Zeigler, Ashley Zeigler, Julie Zeigler and Stephanie Zeigler.
Funeral Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bob Bratcher officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to all the caring Doctors, Nurses and Respiratory Therapist that took such good care of our “Perfect Princess”.

Winona Lorene Livingston Mabry

Odessa - Winona Lorene Livingston Mabry, 88, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2005, at her residence.
Winona, the oldest of four children, was born March 22, 1917, in Neal, Kan., to Stephen and Fredricka Livingston. She married Robert Mabry on Sept. 5, 1941, in Chickasha, Okla. Their earlier years were spent in Oklahoma, Colorado and Louisiana, before settling in Odessa in 1951. Winona was involved in raising her family, volunteer work, and many organizations. She joined the Friendship class of the First Methodist Church in 1952. She also was the pianist for the Men’s Bible class for 28 years. She was a member of Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary for 28 years. She also was a member of the Eastern Star and Social Order of Beauceants for 26 years. She played the piano for a variety of social events throughout the years. She was an avid bridge player and has played in a large number of bridge clubs.
The most important part of her life always involved her husband, family and friends. Before Robert’s death, many pleasurable hours were spent on some lake or river fishing with friends, J.D. and Johnnie Davis.
Winona was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Mabry Dec. 4, 1987; her parents; and sisters, Gertrude Davis and Roberta Barritt.
She is survived by four children, Bobwina Brown Phillips and husband, Kenneth, of Orange, Judy Pearce and husband, Gerald, of Sterling City, and Bruce Mabry and wife, Reta, and Gloria Clarke Bell and husband, Michael, both of Odessa; eight grandchildren, Melissa Sartain, Marcus Brown, Christy Reece, Kimberly Mabry and Linsey Mabry, all of Odessa, Shannon Eason of Big Spring, Gary Pearce of Fort Worth, and Brandy Dillon of Dallas; 10 great-grandchildren, Kaylea Sartain, Macy Sartain, Jacob Brown, Courtney Brown, Brian Brown, Justin Eason, Blake Eason, Zachery Hanson Pearce, Aiyana Carroll and Olivia Dillon; and her sister, Minta Riddle of Pharr.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips, son-in-law, officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Special thanks to Donna Sledge of Home Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Alta Porter Cassity

Odessa - Alta Porter Cassity, 87 years of age, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2005, at
Parks Methodist Retirement Center.
She was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Orr, Okla., to Jody Lee and Mary Briscoe Porter. The family moved to Odessa in 1933. Alta married Monroe Cassity of Odessa in 1938. The Cassitys had two children: a daughter, Carol, and a son, Gary. Monroe preceded Alta in death in 1992.
Alta graduated from Odessa High School and returned to school in the 1960s for nurses training at Odessa College. She was a member of Creative Writers, Odessa Poetry Club and the Odessa Cultural Council.
Her daughter, Carol Russell of Odessa; and her son, Gary Cassity of Waco survive her. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Scott Cassity and Greg Cassity, both of Austin, Mike Russell Jr. of McAllen, and Steven Russell of San Diego, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Dillon Russell, both of McAllen. She is also survived by her sister Joan Herndon of Albuquerque, N.M.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Parks Methodist for their wonderful care and concern for the last two and a half years. A special thank you also for the excellent care provided by the staff of Odyssey Hospice, during the last weeks of Alta’s illness.
Graveside services and interment will be at the old Odessa cemetery.

Angelita Armesto Jaquez

El Paso - Angelita Armesto Jaquez, 56, daughter of the late Esteban and Julia Armesto and the fourth of five children, was born on June 5, 1949, in Odessa. A child of God, who faded too soon, departed this life on Friday, Aug. 05, 2005.
Angelita known as, “Hela or Angie” to her friends and loved ones, was a proud product of Ector High School in Odessa. She had the same intense fighting, strong-willed spirit demonstrated by the former Ector Eagles in their endeavors. She had a great sense of humor, a ready smile and truly loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren, Melissa, 16, Edward, 14, Lauren, 7, and Matthew, 2. To the end, she was very involved in the wellbeing of the two grandchildren that lived with her. She followed intensely and with great pride their academic progress. Encouraging them to strive for higher performance and think about college. She inspired them onward to be the best that they can be in manners and deeds. She loved her beautiful grandchildren tremendously so; for they brought her much love and joy. She was a devout wife, mother, grandmother and friend. We will remember fondly the endless memories she leaves us, the good times, the many times she made us laugh and the hard times. She was great to be with, warm, outgoing and personable. She will be profoundly missed by all who came to love her or know her.
We extend our sincerest thanks for the many of you who came to her aid in her time of need, who visited her in ICU. Bless you, who cheered her up when she was down and the many of you who prayed for her. Mil gracias to the many of you who visited her at home. She would have been very touched and humbled by your kind thoughts, well wishes and prayers. To all she would want you to remember the verse Palm 23:4 “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You (Lord) are with me.”
Mourning her are husband, Mingo; three beloved sons, Ed of El Paso, Chris of Mansfield, and Ben of El Paso; two brothers, Stephen Armesto of Dallas, and Joe Armesto of Houston; and one sister, Josie Martinez of Odessa; and the many others who knew her.
Adios…….Some day we’ll be together.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Mount Carmel Funeral Home Chapel in El Paso. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday morning at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

Leo Thurman Spurgeon

Sapulpa, Okla. - Leo Thurman Spurgeon, age 94, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law after a short period of declining health.
He was born Sept. 11, 1910, in Bixby, Okla., to Joe and Cora (Davis) Spurgeon. He grew up in Bixby and moved with his family to Mounds as a teenager. He moved to Goldsmith, Texas, in 1946, where he worked in the oil fields for Gulf Oil Co. for many years. He moved to Mustang in 1988 and was a Methodist.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Goldie.
He is survived by one daughter, Doris Smith and husband, Dale, of Mustang, Okla.; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Edna Richardson of Owasso, Okla.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 9, in the chapel at South Heights cemetery, Sapulpa, Okla., with interment following at South Heights cemetery under the direction of McNeil’s Mustang Funeral Service, Mustang, Okla.

L.C. Abbott

Andrews - Graveside services for L.C. Abbott, 78, of Odessa, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, in Andrews North cemetery. The Odessa V.F.W. Post No. 4372 will conduct military services. Services and burial are under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.
L.C. passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, in Andrews. He was born on Dec. 30, 1926, in Truscott, Texas, to Henry and Zora Abbott. He taught and coached for 36 years in Mertzon and Ector County Independent School District. He loved to golf, fish and be with his grandchildren and family. He served in the Navy aviation division in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jean of Odessa; son, Bruce of Odessa; daughter, Carole Watts and husband, Dusty, of Lubbock; grandchildren, Taylor Abbott and Seth Watts; sisters, Peggy Jackson of San Angelo, and Maxine Butler and her husband, Norman, of Conroe.
A sister, Brenda Abbott, preceded him in death.
The family would like to extend our appreciation to our loving “Mo” and her staff and to Star Hospice.
