Grace Bernice James

ODESSA - Grace Bernice James, age 87, passed away Friday, May 27, 2005, at her residence in Odessa.
Bernice was the friendly-faced evening clerk at the Executive Inn for more than 20 years. She was loved by all.
She was born Aug. 29, 1917, to Eugene and Ellen Branch in Charlotte, Texas. She married Thomas Stanton James on June 9, 1938, in Carizzo Springs, Texas.
She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Her parents and husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include her sons, Jerry Ray James and wife Shirley of Minneapolis, Minn., Kenneth Jerome James and wife Kathy of Dallas, Texas, and John Phillip James and wife Adrian of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; daughters, Janice Ellen Ensch and husband Bob of Largo, Fla., and Judy Kay Cooke of Odessa; brother, Kenneth Branch of Caldwell, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
The family gives a special thanks to Home Hospice and caregivers Becky Stephens and Sheri Delgado.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Viola O. Smith

RANKIN - Viola O. Smith, age 76, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at her residence.
Viola was born Viola O. Whitney in Barrenette, Wisconsin, on October 1, 1928. She married Lewis M. Smith in 1944 at Couer D’Alene, Idaho, and they moved to Rankin in November of that year.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rankin.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Lewis M. Smith; two children, John and his wife, Melba, of Midland, and Lynn Hill and her husband, Jack, of Houston; two brothers; George of Florida and James Victor “Vic” of Washington. Viola had four grandchildren, Ashleigh Smith, Jessica Smith, Katie Hill and Elsie Hill.
She is preceded in death by two children, Jacquelyn Marie in 1948, and Wanna Jean in 1959; her parents, Oscar Lewis Whitney and Myrtle Emroy Goodlaxson Whitney; and a half-brother, Walter Stiles of Idaho.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, June 17, at Shaffer Nichols Funeral Home in Crane.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2005, at the Rankin cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch.

Paul Edward Thomas

Odessa - Paul Edward Thomas went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at Hospice House in Odessa.
He was born June 1, 1936, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Donald and Hettie Ann Monk Thomas. Paul grew up and received his education in Belair, Maryland.
Mr. Thomas served a tour of Korea and Vietnam and retired from the United States Air Force. He worked for many years with Delta-Brenntas Chemical Company and then retired to enjoy life. Some of his skilled hobbies were woodworking and building furniture. Paul also had a niche for restoration, which he utilized in the upkeep of property with a small farmhouse out in the country. He frequently enjoyed entertaining guests in his country home, almost as much as he enjoyed his wonderful grandchildren.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife; Barbara Thomas; sons, Paul and wife Gloria Thomas of Odessa, and Patrick Thomas of Austin; and grandchildren, Katie, Austin, Ashley and Christian Paul Thomas.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2005, at the funeral home chapel with Jimmy Hull officiating.
Pallbearers are: Calvin Lawson, Roy Sanchez, Wayne Wright, Bev Spinks, Austin Thomas and Joseph Mitchell.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Rebecca ‘Becky’ Chavez Sosa

Odessa - Rebecca “Becky” Chavez Sosa, 35, passed away Monday, June 13, 2005, at her residence in Denton.
She was born Jan. 6, 1970, in Odessa to Jesse and Felipa Chavez Sosa. She was a Christian Catholic and a Homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents, Claudio Rix and Celso and Ramona Sosa.
She is survived by son, Celso Jesus Sosa of Odessa; daughter, Marissa Aboytes of Denton; mother, Felipa Sosa of Odessa; grandmother, Amparo Marquez of El Paso; sister, Christina Hernandez and husband, Jose Luis, of Odessa; nephew, Jose De Jesus Hernandez; niece, Natalie Hernandez; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and a lot of friends.
We, the Sosa family, would like to take this time extend a heartfelt embrace to each and every one of you for all your prayers, floral food offerings and especially your presence with us during this most difficult and tragic time. May God bless you all abundantly.
Pallbearers will be: John Chavez, Mark Nunez, Jonathan Reyes, Hector Cerda, Randy Sosa and Omar Reyes.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today, June 17, at Odessa Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Interment will follow at RoseHill cemetery.

Celestino Garcia

Odessa - Celestino Garcia, 73, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Home Hospice in Odessa.
He was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Gregory to parents, Alberto P. Garcia Sr. and Dolorez Maldonado Garcia. He married Leonor Ramirez on May 1, 1955. He was a Sergeant in the Army and served during the Korean War. He was a Catholic and a businessman.
Visitation for Mr. Garcia will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Interment will follow at RoseHill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Jose Luis Trejo, Reggie Voss, Pete V. McGarity, Rafael Castillo, Joe Garcia and Carlos.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alberto P. Garcia Sr.; mother, Dolorez M. Garcia; brothers, Leon M. Garcia, Gilbert M. Garcia and Alberto P. Garcia Jr.; sister, Elida Garcia; and great-granddaughter, Aliesha White.
He is survived by his wife, Leonor R. Garcia of Odessa; son, Celestino R. Garcia and wife, Florenda, of Odessa, daughters, Rose Mary Bustamante and husband, Lorenzo Sotelo, of Sherman, Rosa B. Luper and husband, Paul, of Odessa, Patricia R. Garcia of Sherman, and Yvette Garcia Sotelo and husband, Manuel, of Odessa; brothers, David Garcia and wife, Nani, of Mililani, Hawaii, Fabian M. Garcia and wife, Christina, of Taft; sister, Dolorez M. Rodriguez and husband, Raul, of Austin; grandchildren, Shawneequa White, Joseph Bustamante, Mark Taylor Jr., Athena Bustamante, Amanda Raye Garcia, Miranda Raye Garcia, Sunjay Bustamante, Brandon Garcia, Cassandra Garcia, Katarina Garcia and D’anda Raye Garcia; and two great-grandchildren, Aislian White and Jalin White.

Seviano Robble Valencia Sr.

Odessa - Seviano Robble Valencia Sr., 60, passed away Monday, June 20, 2005, at his residence in Odessa.
Seviano was born on February 21st, 1945, in Grandfalls, Texas, to Manuel Valencia and Juanita Ruiz. He was raised in Monahans and attended the Monahans Independent School District. He married Virginia Gutierrez October 25, 1996, in Odessa, Texas.
Mr. Valencia worked for about 10 years as a contract laborer for Halliburton and numerous other oilfield companies in West Texas. He traveled anywhere he was needed.
Seviano Sr. left the wonderful legacy of a great family.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Valencia; two daughters, Irma Ann Valencia and Valerie Valencia; three sons; Seviano R. Valencia Jr.; Jesse Lee Valencia and Mark Adam Valencia; two stepsons, Lee Sanchez and Joel Nava; and three stepdaughters, Amy Nava, Michelle Carrillo and Sirena Torres; one brother, Toribio Valencia; and two sisters, Eva Jacobo and Beta DeLeon. He has nine grandchildren; Jessica Valencia, Jesse Valencia, Justyn Valencia, Dustyn Valencia, Catarina Valencia, Jacob Valencia, Amy Valencia, Jaime Valencia Jr. and Benny Dominguez. Mr. Valencia also has four great-grandchildren, Elijah Valencia, Alexis Dominguez, Sammy Dominguez and Benny Dominguez Jr.
The Memorial Service for Mr. Valencia will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 24th, 2005, in the chapel at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Monahans Memorial cemetery.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

William ‘Bill’ Thomas Henderson

Odessa - William “Bill” Thomas Henderson Jr. passed away Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Springfield, Mo.
Bill was born Jan. 23, 1914, to Burmah and Will Henderson in Odessa. On Aug. 5, 1937, he married Louise Hines, also of Odessa. He was a member of First Methodist Church for many years. Bill and his father owned Henderson Drug, the first drugstore in Odessa, located at the corner of Grant and Second Street. Later, Bill opened and operated Odessa Camera Center until his retirement in 1983.
Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Louise; his daughters, Ann McCoy and husband, Frank, of Springfield, Mo., Jan Rudd of Sweetwater, and Cynthia Scott and her husband, Wayne, of Austin. He is also survived by four grandsons, Ryan McCoy and wife, Michelle, and daughter Mallory, Matt McCoy and wife, Patience, Jason Scott and Justin Scott.
Visitation with the family will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Kevin Harold Lane

Midland - Kevin Harold Lane, of Midland, died July 6, 2005, at the Hospice Midland inpatient unit of Midland Memorial Hospital following a valiant battle with cancer.
Following a private burial service, a memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Midland.
Kevin was born in Kermit, Texas, on April 27, 1962, to Harold Duane Lane and Freida Harrington Lane. He grew up in Odessa, Texas, graduating from Permian High School in 1980. He later graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, with a degree in music education.
On June 1, 1985, Kevin married Lu Ann Liles of Irving, Texas, and they lived in Abilene until 1987, when they moved to Amarillo, Texas. During his time in Amarillo, Kevin was choral director at Sam Houston Jr. High, Canyon High School and Boys Ranch, respectively. He was also choral director at First Presbyterian Church in Canyon, Texas, for several years.
In 1996, Kevin and Lu Ann moved their family to Midland, where Kevin became choral director at Midland High School and at Westminster Presbyterian Church of Odessa. Kevin continued working, making music and bringing joy to his family and friends throughout his eighteen-month cancer journey.
Kevin was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Charlie and June Lane; maternal grandfather; Russell Harrington; and brother, Robert Timothy Lane.
Kevin’s spirit will continue on in the lives of his wife, Lu Ann; son, Ryan; daughter, Morgan of Midland; parents, Harold and Freida Lane of Odessa; brother, Charles and wife, Leigh Ann, and their children: Caitlin, Allison, and Averie, all of Grand Prairie, Texas; brother, Kent of Austin, Texas; and grandmother, Grace Harrington of Clovis, N.M.; as well as his extended family of relatives, friends, colleagues and students whose lives he touched.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Midland, P.O. Box 2621, Midland, TX 79792; Midland High School Choir Boosters, 906 West Illinois Ave., Midland, TX 79701; or a charity of your choice.

James Shelton ‘Butch’ Fulcher

Odessa - James Shelton “Butch” Fulcher, 61, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2005, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 12, 1943, in Dallas to Oliver and Katherine Fulcher. He married Amanda Evitt Feb. 4, 1994, in Odessa. He was an automobile salesman and a carpenter.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Susan Fulcher and Katherine Ferguson.
He is survived by his wife, Amanda Fulcher of Odessa; son, Jamie Fulcher and wife, Carrie, of Corpus Christi; daughters, Shannon Fulcher and Jeremy Jewel of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Kristina McConaughey and husband, Madison, of Midland, and Stacy Tabor and husband, George Lowman of Dallas; and three grandchildren, Rivers McConaughey, Alex Jewel and Dustin Tabor.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Blandina Aguinaga ‘Mama’ Lopez

Odessa - Blandina Aguinaga “Mama” Lopez, 75, of Odessa, joined her creator Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital.
Mrs. Lopez “Mama, ” known as Nina to her sisters and friends, was born June 2, 1930, in Villa Ocampo Guanajuato, Mexico, to Jose Nieves and Maria de la Luz Aguinaga. She lived in Welch for 23 years before moving with her husband and children to Odessa in 1983. She was a homemaker, a lifelong Catholic and a devout believer of the Virgin Mary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emiliano R. Lopez Sr.; son, Jorge A. Lopez; parents; and brother, Rafael.
She is survived by her daughters, Maria A. Artiaga of Reynosa, Mexico, Gloria L. Nunez and husband, Julian, of Andrews, Reyna L. Barrera of Odessa, and Terri L. Hernandez and husband, Roland, of Lubbock; sons, Emiliano Lopez Jr. and wife, Elsa, of San Antonio, Victor A. Lopez of Odessa, and Frank Leos and wife, Rita, of Odessa; sisters, Reyna A. Cortez and Julia Almanza, both of LaJoya, Imelda A. Navarro of Mission., Christina Aguinaga of Reynosa, Mexico; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today, July 22, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Chavez officiating. Interment will follow at RoseHill cemetery.
Nothing is forgotten nor shall you be and while some say we’ve lost you we all know you are found. By the winds of the Heavens. Finally the time has come. Can you hear it? Oh how the angels sing, make no mistake it is the most gloryful sound. You have been down a long and somewhat painful road now at last your body and soul may be at peace. May you have reassurance that all you have done not be overseen but remain in our hearts a memory believed. Judge Jacob Allen Moore

Rankin - Judge Jacob Allen Moore, 90, passed away June 20, 2005, in Odessa.
Allen was born on April 14, 1915, in the Indian Territory, Okla., to Jacob and Carie Moore. Allen grew up in Stephenville and McCamey. He graduated from McCamey High School.
When the war broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Wendover Field, Utah, where the 308th Bomb Group was being formed for the Burma-China Theatre. While in the service, he was stationed in Burma, India, and China. He served as a staff sergeant under Major General Chennault’s 14th U.S. Air Force command as an intelligence officer in the 308th Bomb Group, more commonly known as “Chennault’s Flying Tigers.”
After completing his service with an honorable discharge, he returned to West Texas, where he ventured several businesses in Denver City, McCamey and Rankin. He, along with his wife, Ellen, settled in Rankin. He eventually opened an oilfield construction company that he ran until his retirement.
Mr. Moore served as a county auditor and county judge for Upton County, as well as mayor of the city of Rankin. He supported the Upton County 4-H Club and its many accomplishments. He loved Rankin and was proud to be a part of the community. His many friends throughout the years were earned. Those friendships were never forgotten.
Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Moore; parents, Jacob and Carie Moore, “Tuffy” and “J.C.”; brothers and wives, Lucille and Margie, respectively; and his brother-in-law, “Robbie” Robinson.
He is survived by two sons, Allen Moore and his wife, Shelley, and their children Kenny, Aaron, Brenna, Megan and Anthony, and Jacob Moore and his wife, Nancy; one daughter, Ann Kessler and her husband, Mack, as well as her children, Tracy and Mindy; two sisters, Jean Keffer and her husband, Jim, and Margaret Robinson; and one brother, Bill Moore and his wife, Val; nieces and nephews, Barbara Allen Roberson and husband, Nick, of London, England. Mona Jean Gedney and her husband, Clark, of West Lafayette, Ind., State Representative Jim Keffer and his wife, Leslie, of Eastland; State Representative Bill Keffer and his wife, Liz, of Dallas, Marilyn and Eddie Dunn of Jasper, William “Stuff” Moore of Austin, Margaret Ann Sartain of Dallas, and Carol Ann Moore of Brownwood. Four grandchildren also survive him, Kendra Moore, Seth Allen Adcock, Kayley Bowerman and Amber Fuentes.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at the First Baptist Church of Rankin. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
