Lucille Branscum
ODESSA - Lucille Branscum passed away at her home Monday, September 26, 2005.
She was born November 5, 1931 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to George H. and Sadie Boland.
It was after the Boland’s moved to Odessa, Texas when Lucille met the love of her life, Vernon Branscum. Lucille and Vernon were married on January 6, 1948 and spent 56 years loving each other. Together they had five children, sixteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Lucille was known for the love she had for everyone. There were no strangers to Lucille; She welcomed anyone and everyone into her home. She was a loving wife who devoted her life to loving and caring for Vernon.
She was a wonderful mother who raised five caring and loving children. She was a precious grandmother who never ran out of love or ice cream. Her family was fortunate to have been loved by her.
Lucille is survived by daughter Karen May and her husband Marc; daughter Diane Wright and her husband Eddie; daughter Linda Miller and her husband Charlie and son Stacy Branscum.
She is also survived by her sixteen grandchildren Brian Hamilton, Trey Shelton, Travis Miller, Tamara Shelton, Chad May, Jon Wright, Amanda Branscum, Bonnie Branscum, Clayton Miller, Natasha Branscum, J.R. Branscum, Dustin Branscum, Megan May, Macy May, Laura Catherine Branscum, and Tricia Branscum.
Lucille’s great grandchildren are Kelly Allen, Joshua, Josiah, Dylan, Coby, Madison, Skylar, Blane, Adam, Noah, Makaila, Morgan, Breanne, Katlyn, Charlee, Rayce and Reece.
Lucille is also survived by three sisters, Bonnie Cobb of Odessa, Laverne Vanderburg of Kingsland, and Imogene Peel of Shreveport. LA.
She was preceded in death by her youngest son, James Kelly Branscum, and in December 2004 by her husband Vernon Richard Branscum.
She passed in peace surrounded by the love of her family and the loving care of Odyssey Hospice.
Family visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday September 29, 2005 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Dr. Berkley Gordon Craig
Odessa - Dr. Berkley Gordon Craig, Jr., 82, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on September 26, 2005.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 29, 2005 at First Christian Church with Reverends Bob Sams and Cheryl Homsher from Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens prior to the memorial service.
He was born in Brownwood, TX on August 29, 1923 to Berkley Gordon Craig, Sr. and Alys Bettis.
Dr. Craig graduated from Texas A&M University following high school and from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1945. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
After the Navy, Dr. Craig moved to Odessa and associated with Dr. Chock McCollum. Later he opened his private practice on Alleghaney and was joined by his son Berkley Craig, III in 1994. He retired in 1999 after practicing for 57 years.
Dr. Craig was a life member in the American Dental Association and received an award in recognition of 50 years of service in his profession. He also received The Heritage of Odessa Foundation Award of Excellence in Community Service in 1999; and the Texas House of Representatives Congratulations for Receiving the Community Statesman Award.
He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, a member of the Permian Basin Master Gardeners Association, and the Permian Basin Bicycle Association.
Berkley was a true lover of the outdoors. He could be seen admiring a beautiful sunset or spending countless hours in their garden. His “obsessions” were golf, snow & water skiing, tennis, dirt biking, bird hunting, biking, gardening, and traveling.
His loving family members are his wife, Barbara, of 31 years, daughter, Caron Craig Ducote of San Angelo, son, Berkley Gordon Craig, III and wife Mabel, of Odessa; daughter, Julie and husband Steve Klaus of Georgetown; daughter, Jane Ellen Craig of Tallahassee, Florida; sister, Pat Carlson of Brownwood; grandchildren: Ceyork Ducote, Berkley IV, Jeremy and Makenzie Craig, Justin, Tyler and Krystal; Hannah and Heather Klaus; and Sue Cowden Craig. Berkley will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered. Vaya Con Dios, Amigo!
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Pauline “Winkie” Wilhelm Forester
ODESSA - Pauline “Winkie” Wilhelm Forester, 68, of Odessa, Texas went to be with our Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 24, 2005 after a lengthy illness of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Crematory services were done by Nalley-Pickle & Welch. Services will be held at a later date.
She was born on January 21, 1937 in Ranger, Texas. She grew-up in Wink, Texas and on October 24, 1955 she married William Hugh Forester. They moved overseas to South America (Bolivia, Columbia and Venezuela) and lived 1 year in Cairo, Egypt before moving to Odessa, Texas in 1978.
At the age of 43 she attended Odessa College and graduated Cum Laude and received her Real Estate License. She will best be remembered for her worldly knowledge, quick wit, and cooking.
She is survived by her husband; William Hugh “Hoodie” Forester of almost 50 years of marriage, two daughters; Marianne Forester of Frisco, Texas and Dwendy Pennell and her husband Bruce Pennell of Midland, Texas, one son; Robert Forester of Baytown, Texas, one grandson; Brandon Huff of San Antonio, Texas, two sisters; Irene Christianson of Sun City Arizona and Pat Gerlando of Clute, Texas and three brothers; Tom Wilhelm of Bowie, Texas, Ernie Wilhelm of San Angelo, Texas and Fred Wilhelm of California. In memory, her brother; Bill Wilhelm, Deceased.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association 5926 Balcones Dr. Austin, TX 78731, National Emphysema/COPD Association, or a charity or ministry of your choice.

Linda Kaye Arends
Odessa - Linda Kaye Arends, 58, passed away September 23, 2005 in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Linda Kaye was born September 8, 1947, to Frances Meissner Shelton, and Lonnie Shelton, in Lubbock, Texas. She graduated from Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas in 1966, and furthered her education as a graduate from Texas Tech University in 1970, with her degree in Education. She married Ken Arends on January 1st, 1974.
Mrs. Arends taught first grade in Clyde, Texas, and collectively taught elementary school for 31 years including the Midland and Odessa Independent School Districts. She was an avid sports fan following the Texas Tech Athletics, especially the Lady Raiders basketball team. Linda Kaye was a devoted mother, and very active in her children’s lives. Her hobbies included collecting old children’s books, and traveling.
Linda Kaye is preceded in death by her father; Lonnie Shelton, one brother; Craig Shelton, and her beloved husband; Ken Arends.
Mrs. Arends is survived by her mother; Frances Shelton of, Katy, Texas,
one brother; Lonnie Wayne Shelton and his wife Cindy of, Katy, Texas, Linda’s son; Sean Arends, and his wife Mindy, of Frisco, Texas, grandson Drew Arends of Frisco, Texas and daughter; Kacie Arends of Dallas, Texas.
The family will have a come and go visitation on Wednesday, September the 28th, at Sunset Funeral Home.
Service, celebrating her life, will be held at 10:00am, on Thursday the 29th, of September, in the Chapel at Sunset Funeral Home. Interment will follow immediately after the service, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the High Raider Scholarship Fund, 3819 29th St., Lubbock, Texas 79410.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Odessa, Texas.

Constance (Connie) G. Eckard
Odessa - Funeral services for Constance (Connie) Gayle Martin Eckard, 57, will be Thursday, September 29 at 2 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Family will be present for visitation at Odessa Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 28, from 6-9 p.m.
Connie was born September 4, 1948 in Odessa to Eugene W. and Josephine Martin. She is survived by her father, daughter, Mindy Eckard Guillen (David); two granddaughters, Brooke (12) and Kimberly (10) Guillen, all of Odessa; two sisters, Nancy Vassiliou (Demetrious) of Odessa and Jeanelle Adamak (Russ) of Indianapolis; nephews Dr. Chris Vassiliou (Wendi) of Tulsa and Aaron Adamak of Indianapolis; and nieces Diona Vassiliou of Odessa and Ashley Adamak-Gray (Chris) of Albuquerque.
Connie was a 1967 graduate of PHS and received her BA from UTPB. She worked for many years at the resource center at UTPB prior to losing her eyesight.
Connie founded and served as President of the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. She also served on several boards and committees for the physically disabled at the State and National levels. She was an advocate for rights for the disabled and worked to ensure that government buildings met ADD standards. Connie served as President of the Board of ABLE Center for Independent Living, an organization that was dear to her heart. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she worked in many volunteer capacities. Prior to her death, Connie worked with West Texas Blessings to send supplies to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The light of Connie’s life was her daughter and two granddaughters, whom she loved more than life itself. Her five dachshunds, Scooby, Isabella, Peanut, Duke and Jay were a source of great joy and companionship.
A part of Connie will live on as one of her last wishes was the gift of four organs to transplant recipients. Services by Odessa Funeral Home

H.E. Hoback
ODESSA - H. E. Hoback, 81 affectionately known as “Mr. cemeterypassed away Sunday September 25, 2005 at Deerings Nursing Home/ Odyssey Hospice in Odessa. H. E. was born October 31, 1923 to Julius Lee and Euva Pearl Hoback in Dayton, Tennessee home of the famous “Scopes Monkey Trial”. As a member of the greatest generation he was attending Rhea County High School when he was called to serve his country in WW II, as most young men did at that time he married Cleecy Irene Roberts in February of 1942, and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. H. E. had it rough taking his basic training on Miami Beach Florida. Irene traveled with him at his various stations. He was eventually stationed at Dallas Love Field and as punishment for some indiscretion he was transferred to Midland Ferrying Base which later became a part of Military Air Transport Command. He spent the bulk of his time in the service in Midland. After being discharged H. E. and Irene returned to Midland and established residence. He worked for Clark Meat Packing and later aligned himself with The Tillman Bakery and started an independent pastry and snack route in Midland and served West Texas. His Chevy panel truck broke down one day and in frustration he applied for a sales position at a new cemetery that was just opening, Resthaven Memorial Park, this started his long and distinguished career where he was known a “Mr. cemetery”. In 1953 the family moved to Odessa to establish Sunset Memorial Gardens of which he was Co-owner and Manager from its inception until he left in 1972 to assume the Directorship of Valhalla Mausoleum and Twilight Gardens of Midland which was later merged into Resthaven Memorial Park and the name changed to Resthaven North. H. E. established the West Texas cemetery Association which was later merged into the Texas cemetery Association of which he served all offices including Presidents. He was a member of the Southern cemetery Association. He was a member of an elite cemetery Executive Committee which was known as “The Dirty Dozen” whose goal was to advance the quality, service and effenciency of the cemetery industry. H. E. also was a cemetery designer besides Sunset in Odessa and Valhalla in Midland he designed several cemeteries in East Texas, and Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park in Lubbock. Before retirement he moved to Wichita, Kansas, St. Joseph, Missouri, Wichita Falls and Big Spring, Texas where he served as Sales Managers for the Cemeteries located there. And, prior to his retirement he was in discussions with area leaders about developing a new cemetery for Odessa. While in Odessa, H. E. was an active Civic Leader. He served as Chapter Chairman of the National Foundation March of Dimes from 1954 to 1961. He was active in starting the areas first TV Telethons for the March of Dimes, the Marines March and other fund raisers for the March of Dimes. He was a nominee for the Young man of Odessa Award. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce serving on and chairing various committees his favorite position was that of Ambassador. He was active in United Way. He was a Member of the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Odessa Downtown Lions Club where he served all the offices and most District level posts with 23 years of perfect attendance, Boy Scouts of America where he received the Silver Beaver Award the highest service award they give. He was Chapter chairman of the American Red Cross. Awarded “Boss of the Year by ABWA”. Served the Bonham Band Boosters and Permian Band Boosters and was also President of both.
He was a member of the West Texas Orchid Society, and loved to putter in the garden he had a knack growing Aloe Vera and raising and caring for his snapping turtles.
H. E. was preceded in death by his wife Irene Hoback in January 1982.
Survivors include his only son Stephen Hoback and wife Judy of Ft. Worth, Texas. Sister- Willie Lee Newton of Terrell, Texas and Son, Tom Newton and Wife of Glen Heights, Texas, Brother- James Wesley Hoback of Terrell, Texas, Brother - Archie Perry Hoback and Wife Sue of Van Buren, Arkansas, and Daughters Karen Dixon and Husband of Van Buren, Arkansas, Brenda Higginbotham and Husband of Kemp, Texas, Brother – Charles E. Hoback and wife Shirley of Terrell, Texas, Children, Cindy and Celeste and Step Children, John and Susie. And Six Great Nieces & Nephews.
Also, his Special Friend Maxine Gilliam of Odessa and her family, Daughter Karon Brown and husband Fred of the Woodlands, Texas, and daughter Shelley Warren and husband Alan of the Woodlands, Texas and their children Hannah and Hillin.
The family would like to thank Deering’s Nursing Home and Odyssey House Hospice and his Odyssey nurse Linda Smith
In lieu of flowers donations my be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation or the Odyssey House Hospice
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday at Frank Wilson Chapel with Pastor Dean Kelm officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven North cemetery in Midland. Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Robert D. “Bud” Windham
Odessa - Robert D. “Bud” Windham, 69, of Lake Brownwood passed away September 23 while working on the place he loved.
Mr. Windham was born to parents J.C. “Lefty” and Clemmie in Sweetwater, TX March 16, 1936. The Windham’s moved to Colorado City to raise their family. This is where Mr. Windham graduated high school in 1955. He attended one year of college at Tarleton University. Both of his parents preceded him in death.
Mr. Windham married Christine Clayton of Roscoe in 1955. The couple moved to Odessa in 1963 and raised their three daughters there. Christine lost her battle with cancer in 1979.
Mr. Windham served as a Staff Sgt. and sharp shooter in the National Guard for five years, four months. He was called up during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of the American Legion.
Flora Sanford came into his life and they married July 5, 1986. In 1999, he retired from Sepco after 26 years of service. They made their home on Lake Brownwood and moved there last November enjoying the serenity, wildlife and caring for their cherished cats.
A celebration of Bud’s life will be held for all of his friends and family Saturday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 2223 Lyndale Ave., Odessa.
Flowers may se sent to the church or contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or Home Hospice of Odessa.
These family members will continue to love and honor Bud: his wife and angel Flora, beloved children Karen and David Swinney, Rhonda and Larry Perry, Jana Buchanan and Rance Stepp. Flora’s children David and Kay Sanford, Sondra Sanford. Grandchildren Christine, Brandon, Casey, Candace, Michael, Chance, Devon, Madison, Queena, Jarred, Danielle and John Austin. Great-grandchildren Jadi, Hayleigh, Kaden, Taylor. Siblings Texilea Carson, Jim Windham, Sue Allen. Aunts Jo Chevello and Bonnie Polk. Stepmother Faye Windham and 4 nieces and 1 nephew.

Julia Faye Chappell
Odessa - Julia Faye Chappell, 88, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Medical Center Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Sams with Cheryl Homsher assisting. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Arrangements are by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
She was born in Bryce, Texas. She was a Presbyterian.
Survivors Husband, Robert Lane Chappell; son, Dr. Robert L. Chappell Jr.; daughter, Cynthia Ferguson of Fort Worth; brother, Dr. J.B. Richardson of Houston; aunt, Docia Marie Anderson of Dallas; and four granddaughters
