David Bates Baulch

Odessa - Heaven’s Choir gained another sweet voice Tuesday, December 6, 2005 as David Bates Baulch died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
David was born November 1, 1953 in Coleman, Texas to Bates and Frankie Baulch. The family moved to Lovington, New Mexico in 1962 and finally to Odessa in 1971, David’s senior year. At Permian High School he continued his love of music as a member of several music groups, achieving his 4th All State Choir Award.
Mr. Baulch attended West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas, as a music major. His musical interests were varied, encompassing all types of music. He sang in several operatic productions at the Globe Theatre in Odessa, but perhaps his most constant love was gospel music. He served as a music minister at Immanuel Baptist Church, and Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Odessa as well as Temple Baptist Church in Hereford, Texas. He was active for many years in the music program of First Baptist Church until Multiple Sclerosis forced him from the choir loft to the pew. Still on those occasions when his voice permitted, our pew rang with his powerful voice.
From WTSU David transferred to Baylor University. He continued his love of music and finally had free access to lakes so he could fish. He loved to spend whatever free time he had at the lake. He developed other interests which would play an important part in his later years, photography, medicine and education. He graduated from Baylor with a B. S. in Education. He taught science and music in elementary and secondary schools in Red River, New Mexico, Midland, Hereford and Odessa until his MS progressed.
David developed an interest in medicine while at Baylor which later resulted in his obtaining an RN from Amarillo College. That early experience in the Emergency Room in Waco, Texas, spread to hospitals in Hereford, Lubbock, Midland and lastly in Odessa. At his death, he was affiliated with Midland College in the Health Sciences Department. David’s happiest day was his marriage in June of 1982 to Micki Merritt of Hereford. They were blessed by Sarah in 1985 and J. T. in 1988. He was a loving husband, father, son and sibling who will be greatly missed.
Mr. Baulch is survived by his wife, Micki, his daughter Sarah, a student at Abilene Christian University; a son John Thomas, a student at Richard Milburn Academy; his mother, Frankie Baulch of Odessa; his sisters Polly Harrison and Janice Baulch of Odessa; his brother, Byron Baulch of Odessa; in-laws, G.C. and Gladys Merritt of Hereford; sister and brother-in-law, Scott and Missy Wilcox and brother Mitch Merritt of Hereford; nephews, Stephen Harrison of Denver, Colorado; James Harrison of Euless, Texas; Shayla and Shayne Wilcox of Hereford.
David was met at the gates of heaven by his father Bates Baulch, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Baulch, and Mr. and Mrs. John McClendon.
Services will be held Friday, December 9th, 2005 at 11:00a.m., at First Baptist Church in Odessa, under the direction of Sunset Funeral Home, with Curtis Brewer and Reverend Bill Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Dennis Salyards, Scott Wilcox, Shane Wilcox, Gary Upchurch, Gary Bond, and Jimmy Whitehead.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
