Mavis West Odessa - Mavis West 90, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2005, in Odessa. The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Drive, Odessa. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Frank W. Wilson Chapel with the Dr. H. Bailey Stone and the Pastor Byron McWilliams officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mavis was born January 7, 1915, in Ellis County, Texas, to Benjamin Whitfield and Betty Wooldridge. After getting her nursing training at Odessa College, she pursued a nursing career in pediatrics working in Amarillo and Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She also worked as a beauty operator and worked for many years on their family farm. She enjoyed many hobbies included ceramics, painting, quilting, crocheting and gardening. Mavis was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Odessa. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Aleta Salyards; husband, George M. West; four brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her son, Gary Patterson and wife, Barbara, of Amarillo; brother, Redis Whitfield of Odessa; sister, Mozelle Johnson of Sulpher Springs; son-in-law, Dennis Salyards of Odessa; three stepchildren, Buddy West of Odessa, Yvonne Miller of Midland, and Joe West of Arlington; four grandchildren, Cory Patterson, Todd Patterson, Kara Hendren and Daryl Salyards; and four great-grandchildren. Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Josie Payne Balerio Odessa - Josie Payne Balerio, 70, died June 17, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She was born August 3, 1934, in Big Spring to parents, Buck Payne and Mattie Goolsby Payne. Mrs. Balerio was a homemaker. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2005, at the funeral home with the Rev. Cano Gonzales officiating. Interment will follow at RoseHill cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Willie Balerio Jr., Teddy Balerio, David Balerio, Anthony Rios, Santos Munoz III and Pete Balerio Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Manuel O. Balerio. She is survived by her sons, Pete Balerio Sr., Willie Balerio Sr. and wife, Kay, and Joe Balerio and wife, Irene, all of Odessa; daughters, Mary Langford and husband, Thomas, Delores Munoz, both of Odessa, and Darla Balerio of Kansas; brother, Darvie Payne of Lamesa; sister, Mary Lynn Pryor of Garland, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild. Arrangements are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home. Cherle A. Detlaff Odessa - Cherle A. Detlaff, 45, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at her residence. She was born Feb. 25, 1960, in Montgomery, Ala. Cherle was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and aunt. She is survived by her husband, Kevin Detlaff of Odessa; son, Paul Detlaff of Odessa; daughters, Angela Detlaff of Big Spring, and Kimberli Detlaff of Odessa; parents, Lynn and Alpha Howe of Zephyhills, Fla.; sisters, Sharon Eddingfield of San Antonio, Charlotte Gudaitis of Panama City, Fla.; 15 nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Mid-Cities Community Church. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at the Mid-Cities Community Church, 8700 West Highway 191, Midland, with the Rev. Kevin York officiating. Interment will be at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Tampa, Fla. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Robert (‘Bob’) Linton Seglem ODESSA - Robert (“Bob”) Linton Seglem died early Monday morning, March 14, 2005, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas, after a long and courageous battle following open-heart surgery last November. He is survived by his loving wife and “light of his life,” Marian Edna Westerfeldt Seglem of Odessa, Texas; his son, Robert Darren Seglem and wife Michelle of Midland, Texas; his daughter, DeAnne Michelle Maisano and husband Dino of Burnet, Texas; his mother, Doris Mae Seglem of El Dorado, Kansas; his brothers, William (“Bill”) O. Seglem and wife, Donna of Odessa, Texas, and Billy Pat Salmans and wife, Kathryn of Meridian, Texas; his sisters, Janice Sue Kyser and husband, Michael of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Joni Kay Dacus and husband, Randy, of Canton, Kansas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren who brought great joy to his life: Hunter Seglem and Toni, Beth, Katy, Hannah, Michael and Patti Marie Maisano; in addition, he is survived by numerous nephews and nieces who will lovingly remember their “Uncle Bob.” Bob was preceded in death by his infant son, Roy Linton Seglem, his father, Linton Olaf Seglem, and his daughter, Shawnda Dawn Strickland. Bob was born August 23, 1940, to parents Linton and Doris Seglem. He grew up on a farm and ranch east of El Dorado, Kansas. He shared this birth date with his mother, Doris, and son, Darren, resulting in many memorable family reunions in Bob and Marian’s back yard. He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1957, and received his Bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1973. Bob’s life work as a Petroleum Engineer was in the oil fields of Africa, the North Sea, South America, Canada, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, with a brief time in Kuwait following the Desert Storm war. He worked for Halliburton Services Inc. for many years after which he started his own oil company drilling some 250 wells while partnering with his wife, brother Bill, son and other business associates. Bob was an avid golfer and won several tournaments along side his son, Darren, brother, Bill, and numerous golfing “buddies.” Another great joy in Bob’s life was reunions with his lifelong friends from El Dorado, Kansas High School “Class of ’57.” Throughout the years, they enjoyed numerous trips together serving to strengthen their friendship bonds. Other important highlights from his life include: He was a lifelong member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, He was the past president of the ASA Girls Softball Assoc., a member and former trustee of the Highland United Methodist Church, past president of the Odessa Chapter of the American Heart Assoc., and past president of the Odessa Hearty Hearts Assoc. A family visitation will be held for friends and family Thursday, March 17, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Service will be held on Friday, March 18, 10 a.m at Highland United Methodist Church with Mark Scott officiating and Dino Maisano co-officiating with a graveside service immediately following. A memorial may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of choice. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Santiago Lujan Ramos Odessa - Santiago Lujan Ramos, 79, passed away March 14, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Ramos was born July 25, 1925, in El Mulato Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, to father, Juan Ramos, and mother, Felipa Lujan. On Feb. 6, 1947, he married Adela Arreola. Mr. Ramos was a Catholic. Visitation for Mr. Ramos will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home with a rosary said at 7:39 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Josephs Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Pallbearers will be Manuel Ramos Jr., Noel Ramos, Samuel Ramos, Jorge Ramos, Steve Quintela, Abraham Ponce, Randy Ramos and Timothy Ramos. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Adela Ramos; twins, Rene and Rolando Ramos; and son, Arnaldo Ramos. Survivors include his sons, Arturo Ramos, Manuel Ramos, Santiago Ramos Jr., Alonzo Ramos, Jesus Ramos, Juan Ramos, Carlos Ramos and Anastacio Ramos, all of Odessa; daughters, Amparo Saenz, Olga Quintela and Sylvia Ponce, all of Odessa; brothers, Alberto Ramos of Andrews, and Albaro Ramos of Ojinaga, Mexico; sister, Antonia Valenzuela of Presidio; 30 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering and the time of my departure is at hand; I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Arrangements are entrusted to Martinez Funeral Home. Freddie Mae Watson Gilmer - Services for Freddie Mae Watson, of Odessa, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at Snow Hill Church with the Rev. John Van Hoose, of Bethel Assembly of God Church of Odessa, officiating. Freddie Mae graduated to her heavenly home Sunday, March 13, 2005, at her home in Odessa. She was born April 25, 1937, in Gilmer. She was married 47 years to her husband, Earnest Watson. She was preceded in death by her father, Hubbard Jeffery; her husband, Earnest Watson; her son, Bobby Green; her granddaughter, Jamieka Green; her sister, Valerie Watson; brothers, Willy Jeffery, John L. Jeffery and R.C. Black. She is survived by mother, Roberta Jeffery of Gilmer; daughter, Lavern Watson of Fort Worth; son, Johnny Lee Watson of Dallas; sisters, Gertrude Washington of Odessa, Hazel Morris of Gilmer, and Freddie Rene Rush of Fort Worth; brother, Roy Lee Jeffery of Gilmer; grandchildren, Shaunta Richard, Jorvont Green and Maurice Turner; and seven great-grandchildren. She was currently caring for the homes of Larry Feeler, Brenda Worthen and Robbie Jones. Through the years, Freddie Mae cared for many children in the homes of some special people. Some knew her by the “Green Lady” because she would sell greens that grew in her garden to friends and neighbors. She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Odessa. Many thanks for the love and blessings shared by her wonderful church family. Services are entrusted to Turner Mortuary of Gilmer. Esther L. Parmelly Odessa - Esther L. Parmelly, 87, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village in Odessa. She was born January 2, 1918, to Alvin Liebscher and Antonia Wilke Liebscher in LaGrange, Texas. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Blossom Matthews officiating. Esther attended school in Houston, graduating from high school in 1936 and worked as a secretary in Houston until she married her husband of sixty-four years, James H. “Jim” Parmelly, on June 12, 1938. Jim was an electrical engineer employed in Houston by ExxonMobil (then Humble Oil & Refining Company), and he received a temporary six-month assignment by the company to work at various company locations in West Texas and the Texas Panhandle. The assignment was extended and in 1940, Jim and Esther were transferred from Pampa to Odessa, where they lived from that time except for a short two-year period in the late 1950s, when they lived in McCamey. Esther loved Odessa, Texas, and was proud to call it her home. She was a Christian; and she and Jim were longtime and devoted members of the First United Methodist Church of Odessa, being active members of the Couples Class. They were avid supporters of Odessa High School football, and traveled many, many times to the games wherever they were played. In the OHS glory days of the late 1940s, they attended every game of the 1946 and 1947, seasons including the state championship game won by the Bronchos. They also attended all of the playoff games of the 1953 season when OHS lost in the state championship game in Houston. In addition to being continuous OHS supporters, they also became avid Permian supporters, being season ticket holders, and attended many of the playoff and state championship games of the Panthers. Esther was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and caring friend and neighbor; and devoted much of her time in that endeavor including being a Cub Scout den mother for several years, and volunteering for many charitable and worthwhile activities. She loved gardening and working in her yard, and was a friend of many species. She cared for the many turtles she would find wandering about and would put them in her back yard where there were always a dozen or more to be found. She regularly fed the birds in her neighborhood and hundreds of them would gather about dusk each evening on the telephone wires in the alley awaiting their feeding from her. She seemed to always have a stray cat wander up to the house and would feed and befriend them. She was particularly fond of and loved her Boston terriers, always having one or two about the house for decades, and breeding them on several occasions. Her father, mother and husband preceded her in death. She is survived by her only child, Donald F. Parmelly and wife, Eve, of Odessa; one brother, Charles Liebscher and wife, Ingrid, of San Diego, California; four grandsons, Jay Mitchell and wife, Lisa, of Osan Air Force Base, South Korea, John Mitchell and wife, Judy, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Joe Mitchell and wife, Hollie, of Enterprise, Alabama, and Brian Parmelly of Los Angeles, California; five great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Alvera Liebscher of LaGrange, Texas, and Alice Davidson and husband, Bob, of Fort Worth, Texas; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Parmelly and wife, Sandy, of Visalia, California, and Paul Dick Parmelly of Dallas, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions in honor of Esther to be made to the Parks Methodist Retirement Center, the First United Methodist Church of Odessa or to a charity of your choice. Hershall Paul Brantley Odessa - Hershall Paul Brantley, 87, of Odessa, passed away, Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas. He was born one of ten children to Julius Eugene and Anna May Merrill Brantley on September 25, 1917, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where he was also reared and educated. Hershall Paul Brantley and his lovely bride, Geraldine Ruby Opal Caudle, married on October 15, 1939, at Matoaka Baptist Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He moved from Oklahoma to Texas, where he began four decades of service to Phillips Petroleum Company of Odessa, Texas, and surrounding areas. While in Odessa, Hershall attended Odessa College; was ordained as a pastor at the First Baptist Church in Penwell, Texas; served as deacon for Calvary Baptist Church of Odessa; and was an avid member of the First Baptist Church of Odessa. He retired in 1980 to Lake Brownwood, and then moved back to the Permian Basin in June of 1999, living at Trinity Towers in Midland, and then at Lincoln Towers in Odessa. Hershall was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine R. Caudle Brantley on September 9, 1999; son, Hershall P. Brantley Jr.; daughter; Ruby Oliveann Brantley; brothers, Roy, Eugene, Glen, and Gene Brantley; sisters, Hazel Alexander, Marie Clark and Myrtle Yearout; and survived by daughter; Helen P. Gardner and husband, Butch, of Odessa; son, James Wesley Brantley and wife, Beth, of Odessa; brother, Virgil Brantley; and sister, Dorothy Fugate, both of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; grandchildren, William L. Gardner of Denver City, Texas, Paul E. Gardner and James A. Gardner, both of Odessa, Texas, Jeffrey Hawkins of Springfield, Missouri, James Brantley of Bentonville, Arkansas, Jennifer Brantley of Abilene, Texas, and Robert Brantley of Okmulgee, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Mylissa Gardner of Denver City, and Kristina, Brittany, Tiffany, Hollie, and Becky Gardner, all of Odessa. Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 1, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2005, in Bartlesville, Okla., with the Rev. Rick Jackson, of the Pentecostal Tabernacle Church of Bartlesville, officiating.
