Joe Zant
Odessa - Joe Zant succumbed after a courageous battle with cancer at his home on Tuesday, April 4, 2006, surrounded by his entire family and many friends. Josiah Clifton Zant, Jr. was born in Stamford, Texas on November 4, 1929, the son of Josiah Clifton Zant, Sr. and Margaret Virginia Trammell Zant. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Joe spent his early childhood on the family ranch near Aspermont, Texas, moving to Odessa in 1935. He graduated from Odessa High School, attended Odessa College the first year that it had a building, and graduated from Sul Ross State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Range Animal Husbandry.
Joe was a realtor and appraiser and co-owner of Zant and Associates. He was actively involved in the Odessa Board of Realtors, served as President, and was recently recognized as an Honorary Life Member.
Joe followed his father as a member of the Odessa College Board of Trustees, serving 28 years in every area of leadership on the Board. Education was one of his passions, and another was serving the youth of our community through the Odessa Optimist Club, which he joined in 1967. His service to the Optimist Club extended beyond the Odessa community, when he became Governor of the North Texas District for the 1987-88 year.
Community service played an important role in Joe’s life. He also served on the Boards of the Odessa Boys Club and the YMCA. He was a past member of the Odessa Rotary Club, earned his “Thanks Badge” from the Girl Scouts, became a Master Gardener, and received his 25-year pin from the Masonic Lodge.
Joe grew up at First United Methodist Church and when the call went out to start a new Methodist church in Odessa, he became a charter member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, where his membership most recently resided.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ray Ann Caudle Zant. Also surviving are first wife, Juanita Gholson Zant, and their children: Clif Zant and his wife Lindsay, Cathy Hoggard and her husband Johnny, Jerry Zant and his wife Heidi, and Laura Zant. Joe and Ray Ann raised three daughters: Shannon Myers, Sharo Lopez, and Sherea Hill and her husband Tom, all of whom are surviving. Also surviving is his sister, Celia Bowden and husband J.J., 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and loving friends.
Pallbearers include Scott Bowden, Kent Bowden, Van Bowden, Jason Holloman, Nick Brown and Tom Hill. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Norwood, James Morgan, Foy Bates, Reed Berlin, Don Mouser, Wayne Darville and Dave Paterno.
Joe requested that in lieu of flowers, he would appreciate memorial donations to the Scholarship Funds of Odessa College or the Odessa Optimist Club.

Kenneth Wayne McPherson
Odessa - Kenneth Wayne McPherson, age 48, passed away April 4th, 2006 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Kenneth was born May 6th, 1957 to Eddie Lee McPherson and Wanda Lee (Hanes) McPherson in Odessa and attended Odessa High School.
Though Kenneth was disabled he was an avid pool player and an active member of ‘The Pool Association’, and was a real competitor at his game.
Mr. McPherson is survived by his father; Eddie McPherson; a brother, Bill and his wife Deborah McPherson; his son, Jamie McPherson; grandchildren, Jameson and Calista; niece, Kaylie McPherson and nephew, Jason McPherson, all of Odessa, as well as numerous cousins, uncles, aunts and friends.
Services for Mr. McPherson will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7th, 2006 in the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Reverend Clydel Chapman officiating and interment will follow immediately at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The funeral is under the direction of Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.

Alice ‘Nana’ Sosa
Odessa - In the Loving Arms of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is to be found My Beloved Wife, Mother Daughter, Sister, Grandmother and Dear Friend Alice “Nana” Calderon Sosa. Alice 51 of Odessa surrounded by her Loving Family passed away Monday April 3, 2006 at Medical Center Hospital. She was born August 25, 1954 in Farmington, New Mexico to Abelardo Calderon and Carolina Hinojos. She married Manuel “Meme” Sosa Jr in Odessa. She was a Christian Catholic and a Homemaker. She is survived by her husband Manuel “Meme” Sosa Jr, Son: Joe Sosa and wife Trish of Odessa, Daughter: Jennifer Sosa of Odessa, Parents Abelardo and Carolina Calderon of Dallas, Tx., Brothers: Rudy Calderon of Odessa and Danny Calderon of Dallas, Sisters: Delma Ramirez & husband Ruben and Becky Calderon & Oziel Galvan both of Dallas. 7 Grandchildren Cassie, Brandon, Bailey, and Alexie, Stephanie, J.R., and Mona and 7 Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by Paternal Grandparents: Manuel and Tecla Calderon, Maternal Grandparents: Santos and Delfina Hinojos, Son: Tommy Joel Sosa, Sister: Delia Calderon, and Son-in Law: Jaime Perales. Frances Medford
San Angelo - Frances Medford, 88, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 4, 2006, in San Angelo.
Frances was born on Aug. 15, 1917, in Avery, Texas, to Lallie and Will Hutchinson. She graduated from Clarksville High School. Frances married Joe D. Medford on Sept. 2, 1937, in Paris, Texas. They shared 63 wonderful years together before his death in 2000.
After Frances and Joe married , they moved to West Texas. They lived in Big Spring for five years before moving to Odessa, Texas. They called Odessa their home for over 50 years. They were faithful members of the First Baptist Church, and their church was a very important part of their lives. Frances was employed by Sears Roebuck and Company for 18 years. Frances and Joe moved to San Angelo, Texas, in 1995, to be near their daughter, JoAnn. They were members of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo.
Frances was a sweet and loving Mother known as “Nana” to her grandchildren. She was a very unselfish person, always putting the needs of her family and friends before herself. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Everyone felt her love and her sweet spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, W.T. Hutchinson and Dick Hutchinson.
She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, JoAnn and David Noble of San Angelo, and Jeanette and Harold Gardner of Lawton, Okla.; three granddaughters and their husbands, Jenny and Eddie Pinson of Snyder, Penny and John Hamlett of Lewisboro, N.Y., and Christie and Chip Mello of Plano; one grandson and his wife, Trey and Kristin Gardner of Austin; seven great-grandchildren Wade Pison, Garrett Pinson, Reid Pinson, Sydney Hamlett, Claire Hamlett, Mitchell Mello and Sean Mello.
Open visitation will be Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6, at Johnson’s Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas. The family will be in Odessa from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 7, at Wilson Funeral Home to receive visitors.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the loving care given to our mother by the staff at Regency House.

Florence Ruth Watters
Odessa - Ruth Watters, 81, of Odessa, was born in White County, Illinois, May 29, 1924, to Mary Ann and George Buttry. She went to be with the Lord on April 4, 2006.
She married S. M. “Short” Watters on July 31, 1946 in Henderson, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on June 13, 2001. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Carl Watters of Odessa, George Watters and wife Penni of Midland, ten grandchildren, Kieth and Chris Hafer, Allida Ruth Watters, Wayne and Goldie Watters, Robbie and Melissa Watters, all of Odessa, Stefanie and Quinten Severin of Texas City, David and Shelly Falcon of Montel, Daniel and Jo Watters of Campwood, Glenn and Katrica Watters of Oklahoma City, Stephanie Seibert and Austin Seibert of Midland, fifteen great-grandchildren, Megan Watters, Karlie Watters, Amy Fitzgerald, Abbey Falcon, Preston Watters, Ozzie Marie Watters, Cres Falcon, Shania Falcon, Zane Pierce, Kayelee, Whitney, Brooke, Shelby, Mackenzie, and Devin Watters, and (1) great-great-grandchild, Aubrey Fitzgerald and her beloved and constant companion, “Baby”, and a host of family and friends.
There will be a visitation 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Wayne Watters, Daniel Watters, Kieth Hafer, David Falcon, Robbie Watters, Glenn Watters, Austin Seibert and Stacy Wright. Honorary pallbearer is Ray Woodard.

L. E. ‘Gene’ Grimes
Midland - L. E. “Gene” Grimes, 67, of Midland, died on Saturday, April 1, 2006, in a Snyder hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 6, 2006 at St Nicholas Episcopal Church in Midland with Father Frank Swindle, officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 5, 2006 from 6:30 until 7:30 PM at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland.
Gene was born on November 8, 1938, in Watonga, Oklahoma and married Kathleen Chase on June 10, 1972 in Midland.
Gene was very involved with the Petroleum Museum, to which he donated the oil rig. He was a member of the American Society of Professional Engineers and the International Association of Drilling Contractors.
Gene was a member of the Midland Naturalist Society. He was also a member and leader of the Texas Farm Bureau, Kiwanis and Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a licensed pilot and a rancher. Gene served in the National Guard. He was a member of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Midland; a son, Nickey Grimes of Midland; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Debbie Grimes of Columbia, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Don Seales of Midland; his father, Philip Grimes of Columbia, Missouri; one brother, Grant Grimes of Atlanta, Georgia; several grandchildren; Sarah Gene, Preston and Anthony Del Rio, and Stephanie and Wesley Seales of Midland; Aaron and Allison Grimes of Havelock, North Carolina; Tammie Stuart of Greenville, Texas; Tiffany Grimes of Pope AFB in North Carolina; and Valerie and Kimberly Grimes of Columbia, Missouri; and six great grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Grimes and one brother, Gary Grimes.
The family suggests that memorials be made to St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 4000 W. Loop 250 N, Midland, TX, 79707 or to the 710 Club of Alcoholics Anonymous, 710 Ohio, Midland, TX, 79701.

Reverend Walter Dale (Buddy) Wilson
McCamey - Reverend Walter Dale (Buddy) Wilson, passed away April 3rd, 2006.
Services are scheduled for Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 2:00 pm in the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home Chapel in Crane with Reverend Harvey Neatherlin officiating. Burial following in the Resthaven cemetery in McCamey, with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
Reverend Wilson was born March 6, 1937 in Cove, Arkansas. He came to McCamey and raised seven wonderful children. Buddy worked much of his life in the oilfield all over the Permian Basin. March 6th, 1988 he was ordained as a minister. During and before that time he was a very spiritual man, offering the Word of God to all who would listen. He was always there when you needed a shoulder or a kind word. Buddy didn’t know a stranger. His home was open to all. When Buddy found out he had leukemia his faith in the Lord grew stronger every second that he grew weaker. He told us all to keep our faith and be strong because if he could, then so could we. He was a gentle and kind man with a heart of gold.
Buddy is survived by his wife Shirly Wilson of McCamey, seven children; James Churchwell and wife Rosemary of Midland, Texas, Lewis Churchwell and wife Cathy of Angola, Indiana, Juanita Meyers and husband Charlie Of Austin, Texas, Tammy Thomason and husband Albert of Hudson, Colorado, Dale Wilson, Donnie Wilson and wife Becky, and Tina Wilson all of McCamey. Mother-In-Law, Lella Eason of Gustine, Texas; his sisters Ann Cross of McCamey, Linda Koontz of Stamford and Patsy Porter of Lubbock. His brothers Harvey Neatherlin of Marlin, Texas and Richard Wilson of Carlsbad, New Mexico, sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren and lots of nieces and nephews.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Wilson and Thelma Ross Wilson; and a sister, Betty Reed.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Thomason, Robby Wilson, Christopher Wilson, Doug Neatherlin, Jimmy Don Neatherlin, and Brandon Butler.
He was a loving husband, wonderful father, and a great grandfather. We all dearly loved Buddy Wilson. He will be greatly missed.

Anna Ruppanner
Dalhart - Anna Ruppanner, 76, passed away Friday, March 31, 2006 in Midland, Texas.
Services were held at 2:00 pm Monday, April 3rd, 2006 at the United Pentecostal Church in Dalhart, TX. Burial followed at Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Horizon Funeral Home with Rev. Euell Watts, one of her former pastors, officiating.
Anna Laura Stewart was born August 4, 1929 in Blackwell, OK to Edward and Laphenia (Roper) Stewart. Raised in Blackwell, Anna attended Southern Bible College in Milford, TX. She married Ray Ruppanner on September 11, 1949 in Dalhart, TX. Anna’s father started the United Pentecostal Church in Dalhart and she has remained an active member, teaching Sunday School, playing the Piano, & serving on numerous committees. Mrs. Ruppanner was a member of the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies Auxiliary of the U.T.U., Dalhart PTA, and did volunteer tax return preparation for the AARP. Anna worked for an orthodontist before going to work for Thompson Wholesale, where she worked for many years.
Survivors: Husband Ray Ruppanner of Amarillo, TX Sons: Jim & his wife Revice Ruppanner of Amarillo, TX and Donald and his wife Robin Ruppanner of Midland, TX Daughter: Kay (Harris) Ruppanner and Chris Moeller of St. Kitts, Virgin Isles. Brother: Josh Stewart of Chandler, AZ – Sisters: Joy Johnston of Denver, CO and Catherine Claggett of Higbee, Missouri. 3 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren
She is preceded in death by 1 grandchild, her parents, 2 Brothers and 3 sisters

Harvey Smiley
Odessa - Harvey Smiley age 76 of Odessa, passed away April 3, 2006 at his residence.
Visitation will be Wednesday April 5, 2006 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. Funeral services will be at 10:00AM Thursday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors’ chapel. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Mr. Smiley was born Oct. 16, 1929 in Teague, TX. He was employed as a truck driver most of his life.
Harvey is survived by: 3 sons; Allen Dale Owensby, James B. Hooper, and Walter R. Hooper, all of Odessa, TX; 5 daughters, Marian Eilleen of Bosier City LA.; Susan Zemlock, Sherry Lee Davis, Juanita Lee Russel, and Anjanette Smiley all of Odessa., 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smiley was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Tillman Smiley, and Hattie Belle Johnson, his son, Robert Harvey Smiley, one grandchild, Dawn Leann Story, and his wife, the love of his life Iva Smiley.
Funeral services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Bobby Gene Broom
Monahans - Bobby Gene Broom, 78, of Odessa, and formerly of Monahans, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Hospice House of Odessa. He was born October 28, 1927 in Gorman, Texas, to Walter and Effie (Standfield) Broom.
He was a retired barber, and a member of the Church of Christ.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at Monahans Memorial cemetery, with Greg Holly officiating. Services are under the direction of Harkey Family Funeral Services.
Survivors include his son, Danny Broom and wife Vicki, of Monahans, and daughter, Delores Hittinger of Odessa. He is also survived by 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Tookie Berry
Odessa - Tookie Berry succumbed to a battle with cancer and passed away in his home on Sunday, April 2, 2006. Alvin Lee “Tookie” Berry was born in Odessa, TX on August 18, 1950, the son of R.V. and Katherine Berry.
Tookie graduated from Permian High School in 1969. He was a co-captain on the 1968 State Finalist football team. Tookie moved on to play at Texas Christian University as a 3-year starter, serving 2-years as the defensive captain for the Horned Frogs. He graduated from TCU in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After graduating he returned to Odessa to accept a position as President of the Midland/Odessa Home Builders Association. In 1985 he joined the Broncho Chevrolet staff as Manager of Fleet Truck Sales. Tookie met and married the love of his life, Gena Palmer Berry, in 1993. In 2002, he became President and co-owner of Leek Fire and Safety. During his tenure at Leek Fire and Safety, Tookie continued his involvement in automotive sales by working for the Sewell Auto Group in Crane.
Tookie’s greatest expression of Christ’s love was the relationships he built in his life as evidenced by the numerous lifelong friends. While always a fierce competitor in sports, his love and compassion for people endeared him to all that knew him.
Tookie was preceded in death by his mother Katherine, father R.V., and brother Dickey Berry.
He is survived by his wife Gena Berry; sons Ryan and Cole Bebee of Austin, TX, and Josh Berry of Lewisville, TX and daughter Ashleigh Berry of Odessa. Also surviving; brothers, Ronnie Berry and wife Londa of Odessa, Mickey Berry and wife Wanda of Lovington, NM, Royce Berry and wife Ann of Houston, and sister Betty Fowler and husband Nicky of Lubbock. Tookie also leaves behind two aunts, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and loving friends.
A special request from Tookie, in lieu of flowers for the funeral, please make a donation to St. John’s Episcopal School, PO Box 3046, Odessa, TX 79760.
Pallbearers are: Ricky Digby, Bobby Foster, Dale Harrington, Dan Peoples, Ronnie Peoples, and Tommy Stewart.
Family visitation will be at Frank Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the First United Methodist Church.
