He made many friends along the way, on the baseball diamonds, football fields, basketball courts, in the stands, and on the sidelines. From the kids he helped coach and their parents, to his past teammates and their families. He loved them all! Our Lazaro, loved to win, and of course hated to lose, but the biggest winners are his family and friends who shared him, loved him, played with him, won and lost with him, laughed and cried with him, and most importantly lived life with him.
He was helped by God, that’s what his name means. He shared his years with the love of his life, his wife Maria, who also shared his love of athletics with him. Along with his family and friends, there is a special group of girls that loves him very much, The Odessa Angels Softball Team. They will all miss his presence, as they continue in their playing careers. There are two little ones that he didn’t get to see compete on the fields. A loving mother and grandmother, Petra loved to cook and was good at it. Although her tortillas, not always perfectly round and usually ending up looking like road maps with holes in them, they were still the best. In her younger days, she would get on the floor with the grandchildren and make clay animals.
Petra was a jokester, always pulling some type of joke on an unsuspecting soul. There was a tender, loving side to her also, like the time she gave the grandkids a penny for each gray hair they pulled out of her head — knowing all along it was oftentimes the same hair. Or the smile she hid when she found that one of the grandsons had used her best Sunday-go-to-meeting shoes to play football in.
Petra was dearly loved by all. Her passing will leave a hole in everyone’s hearts. Those left behind to cherish her love and memories are five sons, Joe “Sonny” Lopez and wife, Esther of Kermit, Eddie Lopez of Midland, Palermo Jay Lopez and wife, Luli of Azle, Texas, Freddie Don Lopez and wife, Cindy of Houston and Roland Lopez and wife, Sara of Odessa and one daughter, Pauline Lopez of Odessa.
