Marlene Kay Cook
ODESSA — Marlene Cook, 65, of Odessa, died Sept. 21, 2000, at her residence. She was born Sept. 1, 1935, in Chaunte, Kansas, to E.D. and Edith Childers.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Preston Weatherly officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Cook was a lifelong resident of Odessa. She married
Johnny Cook on Oct. 15, 1966, in Odessa. She liked to play bridge or any kind of games.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Cook of Odessa; sons, Gary Don Scott of Virginia and Larry Wayne Scott of California; step-son, Johnny Cook Jr. of Pecos; sister, Reba Campbell of Georgia; and grandsons, Josh, James and Ian Scott.

Nellie R. Curtis
ODESSA — Graveside services for Nellie R. Curtis, 86, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sunset memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jess Little officiating.
Mrs. Curtis died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Deerings Nursing Home. She was born July 16, 1914, in Giles County, Tenn.
Mrs. Curtis moved to Odessa in 1962 from Denver City. She enjoyed working with porcelain dolls. She was Baptist.
Survivors include her daughters, Cara Robertson of Odessa, Jan Langseth of La Porte and Glenna Fenton of Albuquerque, N.M; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Georgia Alonso
ODESSA — Georgia Alonso, 74, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at her residence.
She was born May 9, 1926, in Sonora.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Frey officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband, Leonardo Alonso of Odessa; sons, Albert Smithwick of Big Spring and Joe Smithwick of San Angelo; daughters, Ale Fuentes, Janie Frausto, Dorothy Bridges, Beatrice Ramirez and Mary Harrison, all of Odessa, Frances Haro of Oakdale, La., and Nancy Qualles of Fort Worth; brothers, Jose Martinez and Juan Martinez, both of Big Spring; sisters, Judy Loya of Big Spring and Edith Martinez of Odessa; 35 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Truman Stanley Coffee
ODESSA — Truman Stanley Coffee, 74, of Odessa, passed away Sept. 21, 2000, after a lengthy illness in a local hospital. As one of seven children, he was born Aug. 2, 1926, in Groesbeck to Robert and Ida Coffee.
Truman served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He married
Ruby Mohler Oct. 22, 1952, in Carlsbad, N.M., and they moved to Odessa in 1959. He had worked for Kem-Kil, Inc., and was later in the used car business.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Coffee of Odessa; one daughter, Candis Coffee of Odessa; several nieces and nephews; and his favorite doggy friend, Sanka.
Public visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2000.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Albert "Bola" M. Hernandez
ODESSA — Albert "Bola" M. Hernandez, 45, of Odessa, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Iglesia de Dios Nueva Vida, 601 W. Clifford St., with Thomas Flores officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home.
He was born June 6, 1955, in Odessa. He was a member of the Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jesusita Saenz Andrade, Antonio Andrade and Isabel Ortiz, and sister, Juana Hernandez.
Survivors include his son, Albert Rene Hernandez Jr. of Evans, Colo.; daughters, Geneva Hernandez of Odessa and Marcie Hernandez of Evans; parents, Nicholas Hernandez and Manuela Montanez Hernandez, both of Odessa; brothers, Reymundo Canales of Lubbock, Isidro Barraza, Arturo Barraza, Nick Hernandez Sr. and wife Cindi and David Hernandez Sr., all of Odessa, and Augustine Hernandez of Dallas; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Nick Augustine Hernandez, Anthony Hernandez, David Hernandez Jr. Nick M. Hernandez Jr., Nathaniel Freeman and David Leal.
Lloyd Colfax "L.C." Alcorn
ODESSA — Lloyd Alcorn, 96, a longtime resident of Odessa, died Sept. 19, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. One of 13 children, he was born Feb. 16, 1904, in Imboden, Ark., to James and Florence Alcorn.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. AIcorn moved to West Texas from Arkansas in 1924 and to San Angelo in 1928. He married
Elsie Martin July 9, 1930, in Ballinger. He went to work for Shell Oil Company in 1934 and moved to Ector County. He remained in Odessa after his retirement in 1969.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 11 brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Odessa; three daughters, Maurine Sperry of Coppell, Imogene and husband Ned Pilcher Jr. of Odessa and Mary Grace Van Cleve of Arlington; and one son, Lloyd C. Alcorn Jr. and wife Suzanne of Waco. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Fred Douglas Deaver
ODESSA — Fred Douglas Deaver, born Dec. 20, 1925, to Mr. Willie Deaver and Mrs. Mary Lou Ashberg Deaver, was one of six children. He was born in Copeland. He united with Little Zion Baptist Church in Brownwood at an early age. After an honorable discharge from the United States Navy, he graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx, N.Y. He then attended Huston-Tillotson College in Austin and graduated with a bachelor of science degree. While in attendance there, he sang in the famous Glee Club and pledged into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Next, he obtained a master’s of education degree from Texas Southern University in Houston. Additional studies were done at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, the University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at El Paso and Odessa College.
From 1950 to 1952, he worked as a teacher on the Hualapai Indian Reservation in Peach Springs, Ariz. He returned to Brownwood to run the community youth center. While living in Brownwood, he met and married
Lillian B. Lynn of High Bank on June 21, 1953. They moved to Odessa in 1954. He began teaching at Carver Elementary School and later moved to Douglas Elementary. He taught science, reading and served as a coach at Blackshear Junior and Senior High School. Later as a counselor, he worked at Blackshear, Ector, Hood, Nimitz and Crockett Junior High Schools.
His church affiliation was with Mount Olive Baptist Church, where he was a charter member and active in every aspect of the church. He was a founding deacon, teacher of the men’s Bible class, a member of the senior choir and the church treasurer.
His organizational affiliations were many. He was a founding member of Eta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Also, he was a founder of the Texas Council of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He held membership in the Mt. Rose Masonic Lodge, the Odessa Black Chamber of Commerce of which he was the treasurer, the ECISD Tri-ethnic Committee, the NAACP, a life member of TSTA and NEA, the Ector Lions Club where he served as president, treasurer, and tail twister, the American Legion, the Odessa City Wide Brotherhood of which he served as its only president, the Ector County Retired School Personnel of which he was treasurer, the AARP, the Past Scout Master of Troop 101 and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
A true public servant, he served as a board member for several organizations which included: The Gertrude Bruce Center, Odessa Parks & Recreation, the Phyllis Wheatley Day Care Center, the Odessa Boys & Girls Club and the R.F. Harding Museum in Brownwood.
Among the numerous awards received were the Friends of Education Award from ECISD and the TCAC Hall of Fame award given by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at the statewide Alpha Life Members Breakfast, which was named in his honor. He received the National Pyramid Award for Outstanding Service to the community and the fraternity at the Year 2000 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity National Convention.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Lillian, of the home; two daughters, Debra Irene and son-in-law Lennerd Byrd and Dr. Tara Yvette Deaver, all of Odessa; three sisters, Maude and brother-in-law Lonnie Lucas and Dorothy Pledge, all of Odessa, and Emma Glen of West Covina, Calif.; five sisters-in-law, Bernice Deaver of Odessa, Ernestine Evans, Annie Bell Lynn and Tommie Washington, all of Marlin, and Judy Young of Austin; grandson, Jaron Fredrick Byrd; granddaughter, Tamara Shani Byrd; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Viewing and visitation for Mr. Deaver will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Martinez Funeral Home. Wake services will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 1500 E. Murphy St. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, 1615 E. Murphy St.
