James Gilbert Hinchliffe

ODESSA - James Gilbert Hinchliffe, 84, of Odessa passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Breckenridge.

He was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Mexia. He served in the 36th Infantry Division during World War II. He was seriously injured in Italy and received the Purple Heart. He was awarded two bronze stars and a silver star in recognition of his bravery in action. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He moved to Odessa in 1954 and began to work with AMOCO until his retirement in 1984. He was a longtime member of Northside Baptist Church where he acquired many friends. Mr. Hinchliffe will be remembered and loved by all of his family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Becky Hinchliffe in 1965, Agnes Hinchliffe, his second wife, in 1996 and also by four brothers and sisters.

Survivors are sons, David "Ebb" Hinchliffe and wife Rory of Arlington, Gil Hinchliffe and friend Gwen of Breckenridge and Gene Walters and wife Nona of Odessa; daughters, Sarah Ogilvy and husband Mike and Nita Martel and husband Mo, all of Odessa; brothers, Burnis Fore of Meterie, La., Norman Hinchliffe of Earth and Maurice Hinchliffe of Mexia; sister, Margaret Hinchliffe of Irving; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 8, 2001, at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, Northside Baptist Church or Door of Hope Mission.

Wilford P. ‘Bill’ Holland

COMANCHE - Wilford P. "Bill" Holland was born April 20, 1924, in Concho County and passed away Feb. 6, 2001, at Abilene Regional Medical Center in Abilene.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Johnnie Townsend Holland as well as his children, Ronald of Eagle Lake, Edwin and his wife Vada Jean, also of Eagle Lake, and a daughter, LaRonda and her husband Richard Sickels of Maple Grove, Minn., seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Holland moved with his parents, brothers and sisters to Big Spring in the early 30’s. He grew up there, attending local schools. In 1942, he joined the Army and was a sergeant in the 554th Anti Aircraft Battalion of the 29th Division of the Fifth Army. He served in five campaigns in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for valor.

Upon his return from military service, he joined Martin Linen and worked for them in Big Spring and Tulsa, Okla., during the 40’s and early 50’s. In 1958, Holland went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and was employed by them until 1962 when he went to work as office manager for Gandy’s Dairies in Odessa. In 1974, he joined Rykin Pump Company as office manager and subsequently worked for Quality Pump Company before retiring in 1988 to Comanche where he was living at the time of his passing.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Comanche Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory cemetery in Comanche County with Comanche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorial may be sent to the Comanche County Public Library, which was so instrumental in helping with his favorite life’s work, the writing of a 10-generation family history of his ancestry.

Alton Lewis Richardson

ODESSA - Alton Lewis Richardson, 1st Sgt. (Ret.), age 70, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at his residence. He was born March 22, 1931, to Robert and Euta Richardson in Rising Star.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, March 30, 2001, at Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord with the Revs. Preston Weatherly and James Otterness officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Richardson graduated from Odessa High School. After graduation at age 17, he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retirement in 1968, he returned to Odessa where he served as an ROTC instructor and administrator with the Ector, Odessa and Permian high schools. He was a major influence in the lives of many young people throughout his entire career.

He married Yvette St. Louis May 7, 1971. They shared nearly 30 years together. He was very active in his church, serving on the church council, and he was active president three times. Mr. Richardson was a 32nd degree mason with Fellowship Lodge No. 1385, AF and AM. Until the last few years, he had been active in the Downtown Lions Club. He had been a band booster president and was very involved in his children and grandchildren’s lives.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Little.

He is survived by his wife, Yvette Richardson of Odessa; son, Laurent St. Louis and wife Kay of Odessa; daughters, Michelle Little of Odessa and Linda Fry and husband Tony Fry of Odessa; brother, Earl Richardson of Long Island, N.Y.; sister, Delma Creamier of Redwood City, Calif.; grandchildren, Scott St. Louis, Adam St. Louis, Sean Little, Hayley Fry and Patrick Fry.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord.

Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Bobbie Gene Morris

ODESSA - While looking around his garden Tuesday, March 27, 2001, God found an empty place. He placed his arms around Bobbie Gene Morris and lifted her to rest.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Highland and Bunche Church of Christ with Brother Gene Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel.

Bobbie Gene was born April 15, 1926, in Ranger to Carl and Hattie Lewis, who preceded her in death. Bobbie was the fifth child of 13 siblings. Five brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

She was baptized in 1943 by the late Brother L.H. Alexander in Odessa, making her the first African American member to be baptized in the Black church in Odessa. She was a charter member of East Pearl Street Church of Christ, which later moved to Highland and Bunche in 1961.

As a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Bobbie touched many lives. She married her childhood sweetheart with whom she shared more than 50 years of her life. To this union were born five sons, Bobby Joe, Tommy, Alvin, Danny and Raymond Morris.

Bobbie cherished her grandchildren as evidenced by her display of photographs in her home. She also loved the time she spent at the Southside Senior Citizens Center, of which she was elected queen several times. Her hobbies included ceramics, sewing and cooking. She will always be remembered for her quiet ways and unassuming smile.

Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Morris Jr., and a son, Raymond Morris III.

Bobbie leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Bobby Joe and Tommy Morris of Odessa, Alvin A. Morris of Long Island, N.Y., and Danny Morris of San Angelo; brothers, Theodore Lewis of Lubbock and Michael Lewis of El Paso; sisters, Maxine Fields of Odessa and Helen Blue of Midland; a devoted niece, Jacke Lewis of Odessa; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends throughout the country.

Emanuel Olle

PFLUGERVILLE - Emanuel A. Olle, 89, of Midland went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 27, 2001. He was born March 26, 1912, to Theodor and Emma in Travis County. He was a member of New Sweden Lutheran Church in New Sweden. He had been a lifetime resident of Travis County until 1996. Mr. Olle served honorably in the Army during World War II and was a lifetime farmer in Travis County.

Mr. Olle was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene Olle of Midland; his son, Tom Olle and his wife Penny of Midland; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 30, 2001, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks cemetery.

For those desiring, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Jerry William Erwin

ODESSA - Jerry William Erwin, age 62, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the Sunset Chapel with Rev. Robert L. Bratcher officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Jerry was born May 5, 1938, in Sentinel, Okla. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He had been a resident of Odessa for three years. Jerry was working for South-Tex Treaters and was a member of Mission Dorado Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sister, Carolyn Skidmore of Odessa; a brother, Ronald Lee Erwin of Orlando, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that donations be made to the building fund of Mission Dorado Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.

Stella Massey

ODESSA - Stella Massey, 75, passed away Friday, March 16, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She was born March 31, 1925, in Chicago, Ill. Troy Wilbert Massey preceded her in death in 2000.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, March 18, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jim Ray Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Stella came here to Odessa in 1961 from Pauls Valley, Okla. She enjoyed making crocheted dolls.

Survivors include her sons, Robert Troy Massey and wife Kippy, of Magnolia; William Jack Massey and wife Mary; and Roger Lee Massey and wife Melody, all of Odessa; daughters, Helen Louise Wheeler and husband Paul of Alvarado, Texas; Donna Gail McClung and husband Bill of Lewisville, Texas; and Nita Marie Massey and husband Dennis of Odessa; three sisters, Josie Radzik, Shophie Janik and Irean Kersten; 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

William Pettit

ODESSA - William L. "Bill" Pettit, 86, of Odessa passed away Friday, March 16, 2001, at Parks Retirement Village in Odessa. Mr. Pettit was born April 20, 1914, in Throckmorton, Texas. He married Helen Grace Grover on May 9, 1937 in Seymour, Texas. He had attended John Tarleton University and Ohio State University. He worked as the Executive Vice-President of the Del-Tex Corporation of Odessa, Lubbock and San Angelo from 1936 to 1985 and served as the Director of the Ector County Senior Citizen’s Center from the early 1980s to the mid 1990s.

Mr. Pettit had been a long-time resident of Odessa and served the community in many ways.

He was a long-time member and Elder Emeritus of the First Christian Church.

He received the West Texas Chamber of Commerce "Leadership Award" in 1967, the "Zeus Award" for Humanitarian Services in 1974, the Outstanding Citizen of Odessa Award in 1980 and the Roger Ozmun Award that recognized his service to his community and his trade organizations. He had been Past Chairman, Odessa College Board of Regents; Past President, Permian Basin Genealogical Society; Past President and Founding Board Member, Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center; 1977 Chairman of the Board and Past Director, Odessa Chamber of Commerce; Past President, Candy Wholesalers Association; Past President, Texas Merchandise Vendors Association; 1990 Director and long-time Board Member, Permian Basin fair and Exposition; Past President, Texas Council of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Community Centers; Member of the Board of Directors, Texas Tobacco Association; and was featured in the 1973 volume of the "Men of Achievement in Texas," a Who’s Who in business over the state.

Mr. Pettit was a member of the Downtown Lions Club, Odessa Chuckwagon Gang, Board of Governors of the Globe Theater, Permian Playhouse, Board of Presidential Museum, Midland-Odessa Symphony, Permian Panther Booster Club and the Democratic Party.

Mr. Pettit will lie in state from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2001, in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the family to receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Memorial services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, in the First Christian Church with The Rev. Dr. David C. Mindel officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Bryant, Don Blair, David Austin, Larry Carroll, Bill Elms, Louis Rochester, Dan Hemphill and Scott Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center, 620 N. Alleghaney Ave., Odessa, Texas 79761.
