Betty Jane Taylor Rhodes

Betty Jane Taylor Rhodes, 72, of Odessa passed away Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. Betty was born September 4, 1928, in Breckenridge, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Annie Taylor, brothers, Karl, Jack, Bill, Duggan and J.P., sisters, Nadine and Maydale, sons, Artie and Eddie Rhodes.

Betty is survived by, husband Jimmie Rhodes of Odessa; daughter, Johnnie Rhodes of Odessa; son, Jim Tom Rhodes of Morgan Hill, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Cathy Rhodes Fickes of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters, Waldine Barr of Stephenville and Bonnie Murff of El Paso; brother, Sonny Taylor of El Paso; grandson, Jimmie Rhodes of Gainesville, Fla.; granddaughters, Tracey Taylor of Port Orchard, Wash. Donella Vieiro of Las Vegas, Nev., and Katie Rhodes of San Jose, Calif.; great-grandson, Lawrence Taylor of Port Orchard; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Fields officiating.

Margaret Eldred Frankson

ODESSA - Margaret Eldred Frankson was born Jan. 14, 1919, to Margaret and Grover Eldred in Scio, N.Y. She passed away May 12, 2001, in Austin where she resided for eight years. She married Floyd Walter Frankson, previous deacon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, April 4, 1941. They were married 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, and two grandchildren, Cheryl Lynn Harmon and William Evan David.

She is succeeded in life by her children, Peter Frankson of Odessa, Judith Lee David of Columbia, Penn., and David Frankson of Gatesville; sisters, Aloine Thorp of Austin, Bettie Lee Yerka of Ithaca, N.Y., and Ruth Henderson of Jamestown, N.Y.; grandchildren, Vincent Frankson and wife, Cherie, Sara Frankson of Conyers, Ga., Mike, Jim and Jack David of Columbia, Penn.; and great-grandchildren, Bernadette Marie Frankson and Jennifer Lynn Harmon.

Margaret was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1959 until she moved to Austin. During the years her husband Floyd was a deacon at St. Mary’s, Margaret was the coordinator of the church’s evening catechism classes for the youth of the parish. She had also worked for Dr. George F. Peer. This was followed by working for a period of time at Odessa Medical Center’s oncology unit.

Margaret was a wonderful wife, great mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her and a pretty darned good golfer and bowler, too!

Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Viewing will be today and Thursday at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.

Martinez Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.

Melvin Fred Webb

ODESSA - Melvin Fred Webb, 87, of Odessa passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Wilson, Okla. He married Wilma McGuinnis Savage on May 20, 1994, in Odessa.

Mr. Webb moved to Odessa in 1927 from Wilson, Okla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1929 and had been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1927. He had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years and retired as Assistant Postmaster of Odessa. He had been a member of the Kiwanis Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, charter member of the Sheriff’s Association, Perky Peers of the First United Methodist Church and the Prairie Dance Club. He was an avid bowler for many years and formed the first left-handed bowling team sponsored by D&L Sports Centers.

Survivors are his wife, Wilma Webb of Odessa; sons, Sonny Webb and wife Judy of Odessa, Harley Mayberry and wife Peggy of Fort Worth; daughters, Barbara Perez and husband Jesus, Nita Lee Pressly and husband Ron and Arella Snapp, all of Odessa, Jean Reeves and husband Hugh of Houston; sisters Oleta Oaks of Bastrop and Naomi Troop of Fort Worth; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2001, in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Fred Webb, Jimmy Looney, Shawn Casey, Todd Reeves, Gary Peek, Jeff Pickens and Ron Pressly. Honorary pallbearers will be Jesus Perez and Hugh Reeves.

Ruby Johnson Cunningham

PECOS - Ruby Johnson Cunningham went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Odessa.

She was born Oct. 23, 1914, in Addis, La., to Bennie and Millie Gorum Cleveland.

Bennie Cleveland worked for the T&P Railroad, and they lived one mile from the Mississippi River. In 1927, they fled their home to escape the raging river, threatening to break the levees. The family and all their belongings rode the train west to Toyah, where they settled permanently in September 1928. Ruby lived in Toyah until 1997, when she moved to Midland to be near her son.

She was a homemaker, bookkeeper and also worked for the school in Toyah. She loved to travel with her family. She was a devout Christian and a friend to all.

She was known as Granny Ruby to many children and later to their children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Oley Cleveland, Buford G. Cleveland and Bennie Cleveland; and a sister, Louise Puryear. Also preceding her is her husband, Garland Johnson, who died in 1960, and her second husband, B.A. "Ab" Cunningham, who died in 1984.

She is survived by her son, B.G. Johnson and wife Lynda of Midland; her brother, James H. Cleveland and wife Joyce of Odessa; her sister, Lois Boulter of Branson, Mo.; her sister, Lillie Mae Lukins and husband Floyd of Sweetwater; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with J.R. Wooten officiating. Interment will be at Mount Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pecos Funeral Home.

Zachary Franco

ODESSA - Zachary Franco, age 11, of Odessa went to be with God on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at a Dallas hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1989, in Odessa.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 20, 2001, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Mark Riley and Brian Swiggart of Immanuel Baptist Church and Rosario Hill of Buenas Nuevas Church officiating.

Zachary Franco and his family have been active members of Immanuel Baptist Church of Odessa. He was involved in the Kids-4-Life Children’s Ministry at Immanuel, where he participated in many things like children’s choir, Bible drill, child precept Bible study and other activities. He had a heart for helping others and at the church served as a volunteer in the Special Needs Sunday School Class, which is for children with special needs.

Zachary was a fifth-grade student at Gonzales Elementary where he was on the A/B honor roll and participated in the drama club. He was a strong Christian at school and prayed for others and was extremely well liked by all students. He was a leader in a positive way on his school campus and volunteered in the special needs class there at Gonzales. He also held a first-degree black belt in tae kwon do.

Zachary was a very happy, caring and a loving young boy who had a great heart and loved to help and serve everyone. He loved his family and friends, especially his parents, Toby and Frances, and his brothers, Joshua and Tomas. Most of all, Zachary loved God and his personal Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave him the wonderful eternal life he is now enjoying in heaven.

While Zachary will be greatly missed, but his parents, family and friends know that because he had Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior, he is in a much better place. They pray that others will know and find the peace that they and Zachary have.

Zachary is survived by his parents, Toby and Frances Franco; brothers, Joshua T. Franco and Tomas A. Franco; grandparents, Florentino and Esperanza Franco and Hipolito and Esperanza Hernandez; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Raymond ‘Pete’ Goodman

AUSTIN - Raymond "Pete" Goodman, age 55, of Austin died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. He was born in Pecos July 24, 1945.

He was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in environmental planning. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He had served in the Peace Corps for four years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Col. Raymond Elmer Goodman.

Survivors include his mother, Peggy Goodman of Austin; his sister, Judy C. Neill and nephew, Jamie F. Neill, both of Vancouver, British Columbia; and various aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, April 20, 2001, in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel with Dr. Helen P. Almanza officiating. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park cemetery.

Morris Dennis Hart

ODESSA - Morris Dennis Hart, age 83, of Odessa died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born May 25, 1917, in Stonewall County.

Graveside services will be at held at 2 p.m. today, May 3, 2001, at Aspermont cemetery in Aspermont with the Rev. Bobby Earl Hart officiating.

Mr. Hart married Virginia Baker in Medford, Ore., in 1944. They moved to Odessa 27 years ago from Seagraves. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Western in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hart of Odessa; nephews, Bobby Hart, Dennis Hart and Milburn Bransford; and nieces, Sue Richardson, Rose Marie Simmons, Cheryl Sentel, Karen Van Patton, Shirley McCree, Jerri Cole and Dian Hart.

Throughout Morris’ life, he touched a lot of people with his kindness and heart-felt chuckle. He will be missed by many.

David E. Lawrence

MIDLAND - David E. Lawrence died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Midland.

A visitation has been set from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 3, 2001, at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2001, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Palmer officiating.

David E. Lawrence was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Quitman to Owen and Jewell Lawrence. He graduated from Quitman High School June 1, 1951. David was the high school senior class president, three-year high school football letterman and a pilot for 20 years. Mr. Lawrence served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955 as an aviation structural mechanic, last stationed at Sanford, Fla. He then served on reserve status from 1955 to 1960. Dave worked in the Permian Basin oil fields after leaving the Navy, last working for Bob Keating as an aircraft mechanic in Odessa. On Dec. 21, 1991, he married Mildred Louise Blewett in Odessa. David was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

David was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, JoAnn Lawrence.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Louise Lawrence of Midland; his three sons, David K. Lawrence of Tomball, Jesse Blewett and his wife Leta of Midland and Vernon Andrew Blewett of Odessa; his daughter, Brenda K. Lawrence of Odessa; his six brothers, Owen Lawrence of Quitman, John Lawrence of Mineola, Jerry VanDusen of Houston, Walter VanDusen of Mesquite, Kenneth VanDusen of Grand Prairie and Bill VanDusen of Odessa; a sister, Martha Jo Morris of Odessa; two grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
