Elizabeth Turner Lamb BROWNWOOD — Elizabeth Turner Lamb, 93, passed away Monday morning at a Midland hospital following a brief illness. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Greenleaf cemetery in Brownwood under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Mrs. Lamb was born Feb. 7, 1908, in Santa Anna, Texas, to Fred and Elizabeth Turner. She married James L. Lamb on Aug. 30, 1927. They moved to Odessa in 1947 where she resided until moving to Midland in 1985. She resided at Trinity Towers for the past three years. Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her husband in 1984. She is survived by her son, James L. Lamb Jr. of Austin, formerly of Midland; a grandson, James Lamb of Laurel, Md.; and a granddaughter, Lesli Lamb Paul of Charlotte, N.C. She is also survived by a brother, J.D. Turner of Evansville, Ind., and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Odessa and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Memorials may be directed to the Trinity Towers Memorial Fund or to any chosen charity. Alberto M. Navarro KERMIT — Alberto M. Navarro, 87, of Kermit passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at his residence. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 26, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Waiwood officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Redford. He married Agripina Levario on June 10, 1941, in Mulato, Mexico. He was a resident of Kermit for 56 years. He was a mason and Catholic. He is survived by his wife, Agripina Navarro of Kermit; daughters, Aurora Vigil, Alfa Navarrete and Sally Navarro, all of Odessa; sister, Amparo N. Montoya of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sons-in-law, Oscar Vigil and Ismael Navarrete, both of Odessa. Arrangements by Cooper Funeral Chapel Inc. William F. ‘Bill’ Carothers TOMBALL — William F. “Bill” Carothers, born Aug. 13, 1912, in Tahoka, passed away at 89 years of age Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at 12:15 a.m. in Llano after a brief illness. Mr. Carothers holds several patents with Wilson Industries that helped establish Wilson’s reputation in the oilfield. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Mr. Carothers is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth A. Carothers of Sunrise Beach. Also surviving are daughters, Elizabeth Ann Greenwood (Bobby) of Odessa, Beverly J. Holland (William) of Corpus Christi and Betty Sue Self (Perry Mittelstaedt) of Houston; brother, Carter E. Carothers of Ontario, Calif.; grandchildren, Rusty, Brett, Kellye, Stephanie, Doug (deceased), Greg and Melissa; and great-grandchildren, Justin, Reagan, Brittany, Dylan, Trevor and Michaele. He began designing tools for the oilfield as his ammunition against the recurring problems with which he was faced. After employment with Houston Engineers and Wilson Supply, Mr. Carothers moved to Odessa to manage M&B Fishing Tools. He returned to Wilson Downhole in 1966 transferring back to Houston the next year and becoming Downhole’s Special Services and Tool Design Representative to serve as troubleshooter for young fishing tool operators in the field. After taking semi-retirement, he led seminars on directional drilling. In 1978, he and Elizabeth made their permanent home at Lake LBJ, where he served as a building inspector. Memorials may be directed to the Midland Children’s Rehabilitation Center, 802 Ventura, Midland, Texas, 79705, or the Advisory Committee of the Permian Basin Community Centers, 3128 Kermit Highway, Odessa, Texas, 79764. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Klein Memorial Park in Tomball. Paul Reed Van Zandt ODESSA — Paul Reed Van Zandt, age 82, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, in Odessa. Services are scheduled for 4 p.m. today, Sept. 26, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Ray Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Paul was born Feb. 1, 1919, in Mitchell County to Cora Hargroves Van Zandt and George Van Zandt. He married Mary Nard on June 10, 1942, in Ballinger. She preceded him in death June 22, 1987. His sons, Ricky and Jimmy, also preceded him in death. Paul was in the CCC from 1938 to 1939. He moved to Odessa in 1965. He retired from Poole Co. in 1982 after many years of service. Survivors include his children, Paul Plen Van Zandt of Odessa, Gary Van Zandt of Livingston, Don Van Zandt and wife Diane of Ramona, Calif., Wally Van Zandt and wife Carla of McDade, Michael Van Zandt and wife Karen of Kingman, Ariz., and Charles Van Zandt and wife Diane of Paige; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Paul was also loved by and will be mourned by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Joleine Cathrine Crowe ODESSA — “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14: 1-3 Joleine Cathrine Crowe went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at 4:15 p.m. Loving wife, Momma and Nana, her husband, two daughters and son-in-law at her side, she left this world peacefully. Joleine was with us just a short 40 years, but left us memories that her family and friends will never forget. Joleine will be dearly missed, a truly wonderful person. Always thinking and caring about others before herself. Finding out she had cancer a mere six months ago, she fought the illness and pain bravely to the end. Joleine, J.C., as she was known to some, constantly told all that she was going to be all right, that she was going to be healed. She told the truth. She is all right. She was given the most precious healing, to be with our Lord, where there are no worries, no pain, no sickness, to live in heaven for eternity. Joleine loved many things, first and foremost God, then her family. She was especially proud of her two daughters and two grandsons, always giving up things for herself to give to them. Joleine also loved her work. She was a classroom monitor at Sherwood Christian Academy and considered herself a teacher. During her illness, she was always saying she missed her “kids” at school, that she needed to get back to work. She worried that she needed to be there to help doing God’s work. Joleine loved her home, simple, but what she wanted, spending hundreds of hours designing and then remodeling her kitchen and living room. She was always adding that personal touch to everything. Joleine was a member of the Goldsmith Volunteer Fire Department, where she served as a firefighter, EMT and ECA, again, helping others. Joleine leaves behind not only her memories, but also part of her lives on in her daughters and grandbabies. Daughters, Cheri’ Jones and Melissa Crowe of Goldsmith; grandsons, Tyler Daniel and Matthew Braden; husband, Lynn, with “strict orders” from her to take care of her family; and loving son-in-law, Gabriel, whom she said, Cheri could have found no better. She wanted to thank everyone, her family and many, many friends and neighbors for being there during all of this, offering help, food and prayers. When she knew it was time to go home, she told us she would go to prepare a place for all of us, telling us she would see us again. Knowing Joleine, she is probably redesigning our eternal home now. Joleine, your husband, daughters, grandbabies, son-in-law, family and friends will dearly miss you. We love you and know that you are truly “OK” and “all right” now. Love you, “baby, ” and we’ll see you soon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Central Baptist Church, 1401 N. Texas Ave., with Rev. Terry Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services have been entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Thomas Doyle Carpenter Jr. MIDLAND — Thomas Doyle Carpenter Jr. passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Pipkin Chapel with Masonic Lodge No. 623 and Eastern Star Chapter No. 253 conducting the service. A family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. Graveside and burial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Mason cemetery in Arp, Texas, with Masonic Canton Lodge No. 98 officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Pipkin Funeral Home and Chapel. Thomas was born May 13, 1937, in Arp to Thomas D. Sr. and Pearlie Mae Davis Carpenter. He married Verla Shipp Spaw on June 12, 1993, at First Methodist Church in Midland. He was a Baptist and a member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. He was a mason for over 40 years with dual membership at Canton Lodge No. 98 in Arp and Midland No. 623. He was junior past patron of Chapter No. 253 in Midland, Order of the Eastern Star and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by his parents. Thomas is survived by his wife, Verla Carpenter of Midland; daughters, Margaret and husband Mitch Namendorf of San Antonio, Catherine and husband John Trankovich of Irmo, S.C., and Cynthia and husband Mickey Colomb of Farmington, N.M.; sons, Robert Spaw Jr. and wife Marina of Palacios and Steven Spaw and wife Jackie of Houston; sister, Neta Parish and husband Billy of Arp; aunts, Nell Davis of Odessa and Evelyn Davis of Overton; 13 grandchildren; and several cousins and aunts from the Odessa and Tyler areas. The family would like to give special thanks to Thomas’s many caregivers during his recent illness. James M. 'Jim' Gay ODESSA — James M. “Jim” Gay, 79, of Cisco passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2001, in Fort Worth. Mr. Gay was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Haskell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Gay married Idelfonsa Granado in Odessa 34 years ago. They had been former residents of Odessa and have lived in Cisco for seven years. He is survived by his wife, Ilda Gay of Cisco; five stepsons, Bill Stewart of Fort Worth, Pete Stewart of Houston, John Stewart of Odessa, Gene Stewart of San Antonio and Edward Stewart of Odessa; a stepdaughter, Betty Stewart of Houston; a sister, Mae Borth of Stratford; three nephews, Herman Borth of Stratford, Lee Brannon and Dee Brannon, both of Andrews; three nieces, Fern Yell of Amarillo, Mary Gay Billingsley of Alamogordo, N.M., and June Griffin of Conroe; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Woodruff as celebrant. Interment followed at Rose Hill cemetery under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Beau Jack Hendrick PECOS — Longtime Pecos educator, coach and rancher Beau Jack Hendrick, 58, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. Beau Jack was born May 11, 1943, in Odessa. After graduating from Odessa High School, he attended Sul Ross State University where he earned his bachelor of science degree and master’s in administration. He moved to Pecos in 1967 to teach and coach at Pecos High School. Through 33 years in the Pecos school system, he taught different grade levels, coached at different campuses, served as vice principal of Austin Elementary, principal at Pecos Junior High and returned to Austin Elementary only to retire in 2000 after seven years as principal. Beau Jack cherished storytelling and reading to schoolchildren. During the school years, he could be seen wearing many hats, including cowboy Santa during the Christmas season, Cat in the Hat during Dr. Seuss Celebration Week and Pecos Bill during Public School Week. He enjoyed riding and ranching. He and Tina were on the West of the Pecos Rodeo Committee for several years and were also involved in the Reeves-Loving County Junior Livestock Show and Sale. He was to be the Livestock Show chairman for 2002. An avid golfer, Beau Jack could be seen at the Reeves County Golf Course daily. He was a member of the Pecos Men’s Golf Association and served as the annual tournament chairman for many years. Beau Jack was preceded in death by his parents, B.C. “Son” and Hazel Eisenwine Hendrick. Beau Jack is survived by his wife, Tina; a son, Beau Tatum Hendrick and wife Laura; a grandson, Beau Tristan Hendrick of The Colony; a brother, B.C. “Nard” Hendrick and wife Marita of Odessa; a sister, Judy Elizabeth Hendrick of Fort Worth; and numerous nephews and nieces. Memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church of Pecos, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or the West of the Pecos Museum. Services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at the First Christian Church of Pecos with Dr. David Mindel and the Rev. Ernest Waggoner officiating. Burial followed at Fairview cemetery under the direction of Pecos Funeral Home.
