Dr. Rosa Lee Cooley NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Dr. Rosa Lee Cooley, 91, of North Little Rock passed away Saturday, January 19, 2002. Dr. Cooley retired as a doctor of podiatry in the Odessa area after 43 years. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Woodland Park cemetery in Mineral Wells. She is survived by one daughter, Charlotte Harper and husband Jimmy of North Little Rock; one grandson, Randal Harper of Glendale, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Angie Thurman of Cabot; and one great-grandchild, Laura Thurman of Cabot. Dr. Cooley was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Ashley Laura Harper. Services in Texas will be conducted by Baum-Carlock Bumgardner Funeral Home, Mineral Wells, Texas, 940-325-4422. Memorials may be made to Parkhill Christian Church, 4400 JFK Blvd., North Little Rock, AR.,72116 www.northlittlerockfuneralhome.com Sarah Ellen Cowart Donohoe MINEOLA - Mineola lost one of its founding members Sunday, Dec. 20, 2001. Sarah Ellen Cowart Donohoe was a descendant of Martin Varner, who was one of the original 300 pioneers to settle Texas under the leadership of Stephen F. Austin. Sarah’s parents, Mary Emiline Indiana Amos and J.B. Cowart, were lifelong residents of Mineola in its early years. Sarah, her brothers, J.B. and J.C. Cowart, and her sister, Gladys Cowart Wood, used to play in the nail bin of Cowarts’ Hardware that would later become Mineola’s famed Kitchen’s Hardware. Sarah graduated from Mineola High School in 1928, and while working as a telephone operator, met and married Martin Mills resident Glover Manual “Pete” Donohoe. Sarah had an amazing 95 years filled with raising three children, farming and ranching. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Billie Jean Donohoe Jackson. She is survived by her brother, J.C. Cowart of Mineola; her sister, Gladys Wood of Fairfield; her son, G.M. “Pete” Donohoe Jr. of Mineola; her daughter, Betty Donohoe Dale of Odessa; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Grandma Moses said, “I look back on my life like a good day’s work, it was done and I feel satisfied with it. I was happy and contented. I knew nothing better and made the best out of what life offered. And life is whatever you make it - always has been, always will be.” Sarah Ellen Donohoe has been and always will be remembered as the matriarchal sister, dear mother, storytelling grandmother and “Great” Sarah for the great-grandkids. Life is whatever you make of it, and Sarah Donohoe made a life for her and her family that was both fulfilling and satisfying. Her memory is forever etched in the land she helped cultivate and the memories of her family and friends - always a good day’s work. We love, miss you and look forward to seeing your strength of spirit again. Memorials may be made to the For His Glory Fund of First Baptist Church of Mineola or the Salvation Army. Ina Jo Walton Mapp HOUSTON - Ina Jo Walton Mapp, 89, longtime resident of Odessa, died peacefully Wednesday morning in Houston from complications resulting from a stroke and lengthy illness. Mrs. Mapp was born July 24, 1912, in Hamilton to Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Walton where she was raised and completed high school in 1929. She went on to receive her teaching certificate and Bachelors of Science degree in 1935, graduating from North Texas State Teachers College in Denton. She taught school for many years. Mrs. Mapp moved to Odessa in 1935 and was a longtime civic leader and active in the First United Methodist Church where she was a charter member. Mrs. Mapp was also a charter and lifetime member of the Odessa YWCA, The Odessa Garden Club, The Poetry Club of Texas, and the Matthew D. Ector Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. In addition to being an accomplished musician and singer, Mrs. Mapp was a published poet for which she received prizes and awards as well as being listed in the International Who’s Who in the Poetry Society of London, England. She was married to William Ernest. Mapp Sr. on March 25, 1938, in Pecos. She had two children, W.E. “Dick” Mapp Jr. and Milynda Arleen Mapp Edwards. Survivors include grandchildren, W.E. “Bill” Mapp III of Houston, John Ray Mapp of Kirtland, N.M., Robert Ellis Mapp of Arlington, Joseph Michael Mapp of Odessa, Larry Don Edwards of Odessa and Lonna Sue Edwards Poole of Odessa; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A small memorial service was held with family and friends in attendance under the direction of the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston where Mrs. Mapp had been living with family. The family is asking that any memorials for Mrs. Mapp may be made to the United Methodist Church or charity of one’s choice. Jesus Porras Gomez ODESSA - Jesus Porras Gomez, 86, of Odessa died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Hospice House. Services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Rosary is at 7 p.m. Monday at the Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. Burial is at Rose Hill cemetery. He was born in San Jose, Texas. He was Catholic. Survivors include sons, Maclovio (Coyo) Gomez and wife Felipa of Odessa; Jose Gomez and wife Tenchi of Odessa; Robert Gomez and wife Yolanda of Midland; and daughter, Amparo Sanchez and husband Raul Marquez of Midland; sister, Filomena Lebario of Odessa; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by wife Carmen Gomez, son Chon Gomez, daughter Irma Gomez and his brothers and sisters. Pallbearers are Randy Sanchez, Alvino Gomez, Pepe Gomez, Tony Gomez, Teresa Gomez and Lucy Gomez. Buck Hawthorne ODESSA - Buck Hawthorne, 72, passed away at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002. He was born Nov. 6, 1929, to E. L. and Myrtle Hawthorne in McQueen, Okla. Mr. Hawthorne was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He and his wife, Johnnie, were active supporters of the 4-H program in Monahans, where he lived for 35 years, until recently moving to Odessa. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Monahans. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Bible Fellowship Church in Monahans, with Pastor Barry Klempnauer officiating. Burial will follow in the Monahans Memorial cemetery. Visitation will be at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 6801 E. Hwy. 80, in Odessa, until Monday morning. Viewing will be at the church from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Monday. He is preceded in death by his parents, E.L. and Myrtle Hawthorne, his wife, Johnnie Janelle Hawthorne in 1997, brothers-in-law, Gordon Taylor and Joe Stallings, sister-in-law, Nelda Hawthorne, and nephew, Craig Cusick. Survivors include his sons, Jerry Hawthorne and wife Shelia of Houston; John Hawthorne and fiancee Karla of Big Spring; and Jackie Hawthorne and wife Shelley of Odessa. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Lois Gibson of Altus, Okla.; brother, W.B. Hawthorne, also of Altus, Okla.; sisters, Maxine Cheney and husband, Don, of Amarillo; Dottie Taylor of Sunray, and Beverly Price and husband Martin of Monahans; sisters-in-law, Helen Stallings of Carlsbad, NM; and Jimmie Poor of Dallas. There are seven grandchildren, Patrick, Mandy, Jenna, Ty, and Jaci Hawthorne, and John & Kyle Winne, and two great-grandchildren, Sidney and Kayla Winne, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Odessa. Fran Duggan AMARILLO - Funeral services for Fran Duggan, age 57, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Dec. 27, 2001, at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Mr. Sam Line, minister of Vega Church of Christ, will officiate. Interment will follow at Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Memorial Park Funeral Home. She passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in Amarillo. Fran was born April 20, 1944, in Odessa. She attended school and graduated from Permian High School. She also attended Amarillo College. Fran married John Duggan on Feb. 18, 1961, in Lubbock and lived in Odessa until moving to Vega in 1964. They moved to Amarillo in 1974. Fran worked for Levi Strauss and Co. as a seamstress and retired in 1985. She then worked with her husband in their family-owned business. Fran held many offices with the then-Amarillo and Vega Jaycettes and was a past officer with the Panhandle Roadriders Association. Fran was also a member of the Washington Avenue Christian Church in Amarillo. Her father, Ed Whitmore, and a daughter, Jo Karlyn, preceded Fran in death. Fran is survived by her husband, John of the home; mother, Maggie Whitmore of Odessa; two brothers, Edy Whitmore of San Antonio and Joe Whitmore and his wife Cecilia of Houston; a sister, Candy and her husband Bill McDougal of Odessa; and numerous nieces and nephews. James Hubert Cleveland ODESSA - James Hubert Cleveland, 79, of Odessa passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born March 24, 1922. He moved to Odessa in 1955 from Pecos. He served on the USS Intrepid CV11 during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a Methodist. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cleveland of Odessa; sons, Bennie Cleveland of Odessa and Archie Dishman of Greenville, S.C.; daughter, Darlene Ingram of Guthrie, Okla.; sisters, Lois Boulter of Branson, Mo., and Lillie Mae Lukins of Sweetwater; and five grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled for a later date. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Steven Dale Phillips ODESSA - Steven Dale Phillips, 56, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at his residence. He was born July 10, 1945, in Russell, Kan. Mr. Phillips was employed by Albright and Associates for 12 years as a machinist. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion and served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Quinn on Aug. 15, 1996, and sister, Thresa Thomason on July 16, 2001. He is survived by his daughters, Vonda Phillips of Abilene and Melinda Phillips of Odessa; brother, Dennis Meeks of Odessa; sister, Bennita Holbrook of Burnett; and five grandchildren, Chris, Amber, Matthew, Kimberly and Billy Joe. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 27, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Betty Brown PECOS - Betty Brown, 61, of Lumberton, a retired teller for First National Bank in Pecos, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her residence. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clark Ford officiating. Burial will be at Mount Evergreen cemetery. Arrangements by Pecos Funeral Home. She was born in Graham. She was Baptist. SURVIVORS: Husband, Hal Brown of Lumberton; sons, Jamie Wayne Brown of Odessa and John David Brown of Orange; daughter, Julie Ann Edwards of Fairview, Okla.; mother, Alma Opal Vick of Midland; sister, Joan Hamilton of Midland; and seven grandchildren. Hubert Hillin PRESIDIO - Hubert Wayne Hillin, 72, of Garland, a retired compliance officer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the Presidio bridge, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at his residence. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Desert Hills cemetery. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Home. He was born in Crosby County and had been a resident of Presidio. SURVIVORS: Wife, Juanita Hillin of Garland; and sons, Lonny Lee Hillin of Van Horn and Harold Douglas Hillin of Florida.
