Ann Sluder
ODESSA — Amma Ann Sluder, age 61, of Odessa passed away Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Seabury Nursing Center. She was born Oct. 20, 1940, in Texas.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today, June 19, 2002, at Ector County cemetery with the Rev. Dick Brown officiating.
She married Donald Ray Sluder on March 19, 1965. He preceded her in death. She had lived in Odessa for 35 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was a loving mother and grandmother who will be missed by all. “We love you, Momma and Memaw.”
She is survived by a son, Danny Ray Sluder of Odessa; daughters, Lorrie Ann Sluder of Northridge, Calif., and Carol Pool of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Krystl Clymer of Branson, Mo., Danial Ray Sluder of Odessa and Alanna Rachelle Sluder of Odessa; a sister; two brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jesse Weddle
SAN ANTONIO — Jesse Troy Weddle passed away Monday, June 17, 2002, following a prolonged illness. He was born sometime between 23 August 22 and 17 May 1925, depending on the documentation you are reading, “Somewhere in Texas or Arkansas after an oilfield blew up.” A one-time resident and restaurateur in Odessa, Jess was a former Marines sergeant who saw action in both World War II and Korea where he received the Purple Heart. Following his medical retirement from the Marine Corps, he became master chef, overseeing the operations of exclusive clubs from New York to Chicago. He opened several operations of his own with associates or family members as his partners before “retiring” to Florida. Following an initial bout with cancer in Florida, he moved to San Antonio to be closer to his nephew Jimmy’s family and the fine staff at the Audi Murphy VA Hospital.
He is survived by three sons, Woodie Leonard and his wife Donna of Odessa, B. Paul Weddle and his wife Margaret of Arizona and Benny So and his wife Shirley of Simi Valley, Calif.; and his sister, Clara Sasser and her husband Lloyd of Reno, Nev. Additionally, he leaves four grandsons and three granddaughters and numerous nephews and nieces, not to mention his many friends who, over the years, became “family” to him.
At his request, there will be no services. Internment will be held at a later date at Pinetop-Lakeside, Ariz.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful people who staff the Hospice San Antonio Inpatient Facility and the Audi Murphy VA Hospital for their loving care.

Alan Wickham
MIDLAND — Alan Wickham was born Nov. 23, 1935, in Eau Claire, Wis., to Helen M. (Barney) and Meryle A. Wickham. He fought a valiant fight against lung cancer but died Monday, June 17, 2002, at a local hospital.
Alan married Barbara Knapek on Dec. 6, 1980, in Midland. Alan served in the U.S. Army for over 20 years. He was a contract truck driver (owner-operator) contracted to Ace Transportation, Terminal No. 57, in Odessa.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Anne Wickham; and father-in-law and best friend, A.T. “Shorty” Knapek.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Wickham of Midland; his sons, Michael Wickham and wife Dianne of Richardson, Sean L. Kator and wife Heidi of Midland and Mark Kator and wife Elizabeth of Terrytown, La.; his grandchildren, Katherine Wickham, Christopher Wickham, Patric Sloboda, David Sloboda, Sean C. Kator, Shane Kator, Ian Kator, Laura Kator and Charlotte Kator; his brothers, Clayton Wickham and wife Barbara of Escondido, Calif., and Gerald Wickham and wife Sharon of Eau Claire, Wis.; and his sisters, Barbara Cole and husband Mike of Rapid City, S.D., and Margaret Wickham of Deland, Fla. Alan is also survived by his best friend, mother-in-law and caregiver, Sibie Knapek of Andrews.
A visitation has been scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 19, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home. Services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Payton of Stonegate Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
The family request that memorials be directed to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 297153, Houston, Texas, 77297, 1-800-525-5841, or a charity of choice.
Honorary pallbearers will be his children, grandchildren and drivers and employees of Ace Transportation, Terminal No. 57.

P.R. Cates Jr.
ODESSA — P.R. Cates Jr., age 84, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Big Spring.
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Young officiating. A private committal service will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Phillip Richard Cates was born July 4, 1917, in Wichita Falls to Phillip and Lila Cates. He worked in the Civilian Construction Corps at age 15 and later served in the U.S. Cavalry. He married Texana Chilton on June 4, 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and received a medal for expert marksmanship for rifle and pistol.
Mr. Cates loved to hunt, and he was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was the longtime owner of Cates Refrigeration. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. He was a member of First Baptist Church and an active member of the K.I.T. Club and Dr. E.J. Claassen’s Sunday school class. Dad was proud to be a fifth cousin to Davy Crockett, defender of the Alamo.
His parents and a sister, Lila Catherine Belew, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Texana Cates of Odessa; his sons, Phillip Cates and wife Barbara and Rick Cates and wife Anna, all of Odessa; a brother, Don Cates and wife Donna of Lubbock; a sister, Carol Cates of Lubbock; a brother-in-law, Melvin Belew of Madisonville; grandchildren, Christi Cates, Kim Clinkenbeard and husband Tracy, Cari Cates, Phillip W. Cates, Mickey Appleton and wife Margie and Robin Chambers; great-grandchildren, Missy, Mandy and Wesley Appleton; cousins, Keith Davis and wife Sue of Thorndale and Neil Davis of Los Alamos, N.M.; and his beloved poodle, Cujo.
The family suggests memorials to the VA Hospital VAVS Fund, Rm. 6, 300 Veterans Blvd., Big Spring, Texas, 79720.
Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Alfred Klein
ODESSA — Alfred Klein, 48, of Lubbock, an oilfield laborer, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mel Hooten officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Fort Worth and had been a resident of Odessa. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Son, William Neil Childs of Watauga; father, Adam Klein of Lubbock; brothers, D’Wayne Klein of Tyler, Larry Klein of Andrews and Jerry Klein of Odessa; sisters, Elaine Wofford and Alice Payne, both of Odessa; and a grandchild.

Una Thackston
BRADY — Una Elizabeth Ranne Thackston, 87, of Brady, a homemaker, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in Brady.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at Rest Haven cemetery with Blake O’Dell officiating. Arrangements by Heritage Funeral Home.
She was born in Fife and had been a resident of Odessa. She was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Sisters, Johnnie Tedder and Lola Alley, both of Brady, Tommie Floyd of New Brunswick, Ga., and Joanna Riley of Oklahoma City; and brother, Woodrow Ranne of Comfort.

William Davis
ODESSA — William L. Davis, 85, of Gardendale, a retired employee of Gulf Oil Co., died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Odessa Regional Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Trout officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Temple. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Minnie Davis of Gardendale; stepson, Lumme Jarrett of Odessa; stepdaughters, Alyne Hocker and Joann Gibson, both of Odessa, and Alice White of Littleton, Colo.; and brother, John Davis of Fort Worth.

Pauline Rodgers
VANCOUVER, Wash. — Pauline Frances Rodgers, 88, of Vancouver, Wash., a retired chef, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Southwest Wash-ington Medical Center in Vancouver.
Services will be at 10 a.m. PST Friday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens cemetery. Arrangements by Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
She was born in Corsicana and moved to Vancouver in 1949 from Vanport, Ore.
SURVIVORS: Daughter, Lanelle F. Lee of Vancouver; son, Paul Stewart of Skamokawa, Wash.; sister, Billie Heap of Odessa; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ernest Shelton
ODESSA — Ernest Shelton, 94, of Glen Rose, retired owner and operator of Shelton Music Co., died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Cherokee Rose Manor in Glen Rose.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. G.A. Magee officiating. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Greenville. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Pearl Shelton of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; daughters, Sheila Ramsey of Austin, Sherri Stanfield of Granbury and Shelline Shelton of Glen Rose; son, George Shelton of Broken Arrow, Okla.; brother, Arthur Shelton of Odessa; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

C.W. Hunter
ARLINGTON — C.W. Hunter, 73, a retired general foreman, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2002 in Arlington.
Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Moore Funeral Home Chapel, Arlington. Burial: Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
C.W. was born October 8, 1928 in Childress. He was an Arlington resident for the last 25 years and formerly a resident of Odessa. C.W. was employed by Brown and Root Construction Company where he spent a lot of time in the Middle East on offshore drilling. He was a charter member of St. John The Apostle Methodist Church.
SURVIVORS: Wife of 56 years, Nita Hunter of Arlington; daughters, Brenda Russell Thomas of Arlington, and Cynthia Ann Wood and husband, Danny of Arlington; granddaughter, Emily Russell McBee of San Diego, Calif.; grandsons, Ryan Alan Wood and Robin Blake Wood, both of Arlington; his lap dog and friend, Duke.

Essie Hargrove
MONAHANS — Essie Mae Hargrove, 97, of Monahans, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Monahans Managed Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Southside Baptist Church with Barry Klempnauer officiating. Burial will be at Monahans Memorial cemetery. Arrangements by Harkey Funeral Home.
She was born in Nugent and was a resident of Monahans since 1965. She was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Son, J.L. Hargrove of Hawley; daughter, Cleola Helm of Monahans; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

K.W. Hollen
MARFA — K.W. “Cheta” Hollen, 85, of Fort Davis, a retired real estate broker and rancher, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Odessa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ernie Vineyard officiating. Burial will follow at the Marfa cemetery. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Home.
She was born in Marfa.
SURVIVORS: Sons, Ted Hollen of Austin and Skipper Hollen of Fort Davis; daughters, Patty Moreland of Fort Davis and Nancy Black of Austin; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Doyce Perkins
ODESSA — Doyce Gerald Perkins, 62, of Odessa, a service technician, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Rochester and moved to Odessa in 1994. He was Seventh-day Adventist.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Eva Lee Perkins of Odessa; daughter, Michelle Holley of Arizona; two sons; mother, Sybil Perkins Clark of Midland; brother, Danny Perkins of Springtown; sisters, Sharon Walker and Laneita Bingham, both of Midland; and four grandchildren.

Bettie Roberson
ODESSA — Bettie Lou Roberson, 63, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
She was born in Merkel and moved to Odessa in 1947. She was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Husband, Jack Roberson of Odessa; daughter, Sandra Dee Roberson Tilley of Odessa; sons, Ivey Jack “Buddy” Roberson of Odessa and Billy Joe Roberson of Midland; and five grandchildren.
