Sweetie Babcock Costanzi Austin - Sweetie Babcock Costanzi, 56, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She inspired all who knew her with her positive attitude and her refusal to let her illness deter her from enjoying the people, places and things she so loved. Everywhere she has made her home: Kermit, Lubbock, Galveston, Knoxville, and Austin, Sweetie left a legacy of joy, fun, loving relationships and an appreciation of the beauty she saw all around her. Sweetie was born on Jan. 18, 1949, to Wilhelmena and Henry Babcock in Lubbock and was raised in Kermit. She attended Texas Tech University. She was preceded in death by her parents. Sweetie is survived by her husband, Dr. John Costanzi of Austin; stepson, John J. Costanzi Jr. of Houston; and, brother, Joseph Babcock and wife, Betty, of Hobbs, N.M. She also had close and loving relationships with numerous cousins; and a niece, all of whom live in Texas. The family wishes to express special appreciation to Joey Brister, Val Geraldes, Tracy Bell, Mary and Howard Chalmers, the staff of Lone Star Oncology, and other friends and caregivers who encouraged, helped and comforted Sweetie over the past weeks and months. The family will receive visitors from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 2, 2005, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral. Entombment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Mausoleum, 14501 N. Interstate Highway 35, in Pflugerville. Jack Clifford Newland CRANE - Jack Clifford Newland, 85, a resident of Crane since 1933, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at the Crane Memorial Hospital. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church in Crane today. The service will be officiated by Bryans Fitzhugh of University Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Burial will follow in the Crane County cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Mr. Newland was born March 12, 1919, in Midland to Mae Belle Fine and Cliff Newland. He was married to Bonnell Bryans in Garden City, who survives him; along with two sons; and daughters-in-law, James K. Newland and Sharon of Southlake, and Vance and Carolyn Newland of Duncanville; and five grandchildren. They are Amy and Cliff, both of Southlake, and Zachary, Rachel, and Rebecca, all of Duncanville. He is also survived by one niece, Sue Folk of Odessa. He was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. O.F. Blank on June 28, 1994. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from November 1941 to August 1945 during World War II. He spent 3 and a half years in the South Pacific. He worked for Gulf Oil Corporation for over 46 years. Pallbearers are nephews, Ron Folk of Odessa, E.B. Bryans Jr. of Roswell, John D. Bryans of Big Spring, Lloyd Chrisman of Roswell, Jimmy Gault of Graham, and Mark Bryans of Dallas. Hilta Pool Odessa - Hilta Pool passed away January 28, 2005, in her home surrounded by her family and friends. Hilta was born August 24, 1933, in Delta, Mo. She moved to Odessa with her family early in her life and remained an Odessa resident the remainder of her years. She married her high school sweetheart, Neal Pool, on November 11, 1950. The two of them started Neal Pool Rentals in the mid-50s, and in 1963, they expanded into the towing business; henceforth, the start of Neal Pool Rekers. They shared responsibilities of operating the businesses together until the untimely death of Neal in 1975. Upon Neal’s death, Hilta, along with her son, Mike, continued to operate the towing business and bring about its growth. The towing and recovery business was her life, and even though Mike and his family are now running the business to which she dedicated her life, Hilta’s enthusiastic spirit and dedication will continue. Surviving are her son, Michael “Mike” Neal Pool and his wife, Shelley; four grandchildren, Kristi-Jo Roe and husband Nathan, Jaymie Pool, Joshua Purcell and wife Patricia and Jeremy Purcell; sister, Neeta Woods and husband Bobby; two nieces, Vickie Purcell and Teresa Johnson and husband Kye; and one nephew, Terry Woods. Great-nieces and nephews that were also a very dear part of her life include Tyler and Lexi Nutter and Joey Stone. Hilta was preceded in death by her parents, Ninnia Pruett Terrell and James W. Rouse; daughters, Shirley Diane and Donna Gayle and husband Neal. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at the Odessa/Ector County cemetery with the Reverend Griffin Jones officiating. Memorials may be made to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas, Odessa, TX 79761. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Billie Rae Smith Odessa - Billie Rae Smith, 71, of Odessa, passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Frank W. Wilson Chapel with the Pastor Tom Wymore officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Billie Rae Smith was born Feb. 12, 1933, in Rockwall to Jesse Cain and Estelle Lillard Cain. She graduated from Rockwall High School. She married H. M. Smith on July 15, 1957, who preceded her in death in 1989. She is survived by her daughter, Regina Renee Hollinshead of Gardendale; her son, Hayden Manning Smith of Midland; brother, Ted Cain of Rockwall; sisters, Jessi Kirksey of Odessa, Shirley Cupp of Edgewood, Thelma Tucker of Little Rock, Ark., and Nell Samples of Rockwall; grandchildren, Christopher Wade Edwards of Odessa, Casie Nicole Edwards of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Kyle Wade Edwards of Odessa, and Nira Ellice Edwards of Odessa; and dear friend Kenneth Glascock of Odessa. Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Nettie Viola Stone Odessa - Nettie Viola Stone, 95, of Lubbock, passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Lubbock Healthcare Center in Lubbock. She was born June 7, 1909, in Weatherford to her parents Steven F. and Betty Hedrick Hall. Mrs. Stone was a member of the Church of Christ and had retired from Medical Center Hospital where she worked as an LVN for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. T. Stone; daughter, Carol Bowman; son, John Stone; grandson, Lance Hughes; and great-grandson, Skylar Lamar. She is survived by her daughter, Gladys Hughes and husband, Harley, of Lubbock; sister, Laura Cisco of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be noon, Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Burt Groves officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Armilo ‘Milo’ Leyva Zepeda Odessa - Armilo “Milo” Leyva Zepeda, 57, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at The Hospice House. He was born March 11, 1947, in El Divisadero, Chihuahua, Mexico to Fidel and Manuela L. Zepeda. He was a Christian Catholic and worked as a roustabout in the oilfield industry. He was preceded in death by father, Fidel Zepeda; and brother, Arnulfo Zepeda. Mr. Zepeda is survived by wife, Linda C. Zepeda of Odessa; sons, Mike Zepeda and wife, Viviana, of Springdale, Ark., and Gerard Zepeda and Eddy Ray Zeped, both of Odessa; mother, Manuela L. Zepeda of El Divisadero, Chih; Brothers, Arturo Zepeda of El Divisadero, Chih., Abelardo Zepeda of Odessa, Adolfo Zepeda of El Divisadero, Chih, and Manuel Zepeda of Dallas; sisters, Alicia Z. Valenzuela of Artesia, N.M., and Irma Z. Marquez of Rowlette; three grandchildren, Zackery, Damien, and Aubreiana Zepeda; a host of aunts; uncles; cousins; nieces; nephews; and a lot of friends. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Jose Luis Urias Jr. ODESSA - Jose Luis Urias Jr., 19, of Odessa, went to meet the Lord on Jan. 29, 2005. He was born on November 25, 1985. Jose was a miracle and an inspiration to all his family and friends. Although he faced physical obstacles, Jose laughed and smiled that special “smile” we all loved and cherished. Jose was the son of Alicia Perez Urias and Joe Luis Urias. He was a student at Hood Jr. High. Jose was preceded in death by his Grandfather John Perez. Survivors include his mother and father; grandmother, Nickie Perez; sisters, Dora Urias and Melissa Arenivas; brother-in-law, Pete Arenivas; nephew, Nicholas Arenivas; aunts and uncles, Johnny “Papi” Perez, Rudy and Belinda Perez, Ruben and Annie Perez, Irene and Barney Nunez, Glenda and Manuel Bitolas, Sammy and Belinda Urias, Lanny and Mary Urias, Nina and Aaron Carrasco, all of Odessa, Robert and Lety Perez of Fort Worth. He also was loved by several cousins. Funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Rosehill, Ector County cemetery. Les Baucom Kermit - Les Baucom, a 40-year resident of Kermit, passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Regency Hospital of Odessa. He was born Jan. 20, 1932, in Ringling, Okla., to Omer Baucom Sr. and Nell Hoffman Baucom. Les married Leta Duren in Ringling Feb. 28, 1954. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kermit. A few of his hobbies included gardening, his computer, and C.B. radios. He especially enjoyed his “coffee club” get-togethers. Les had been a tool pusher in the oil fields for many years. He is survived by his loving wife, Leta of Kermit; one son, Leslie Baucom Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Monahans; two daughters, Pam Payton and her husband, Tommy, of Sonora, and Liz Ethridge and her husband, Mark, of Monahans; five brothers, J.L. Baucom and his wife, Lavon, of Andrews, O.E. Baucom of Lawton, Okla., Cecil Baucom and his wife, Mary Lou, of Granbury, Earl Baucom and his wife, Myrna, of Hobbs, N.M., and Charles Baucom and his wife, Judy, of Bella Vista, Ark.; and three sisters, Sybil Nolen of Hobbs, N.M., and Eva Jo Williams and Donnie Carrell and her husband, Floyd, both of Odessa. Les will also be missed by his grandchildren; Erin, Joshua, and Brian Payton, Patrick Hawthorne, Calen and Megan Baucom, Amanda Locke, and Amy Bowman; and two great-grandchildren; Madeleine and Marilyn Locke. Les was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lee Baucom and Ashley Roberts; and by one sister, Jessie Ellison. A celebration of Les’ life will be held Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Kermit with the Rev. Dudley Mullins officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Ringling Memorial cemetery. Myrtle A. Dossey Odessa - Myrtle A. Dossey, 86, former Dowling Elementary School teacher, died Tuesday in a nursing home in Humble, after a recent hospital stay. She taught in the Ector County school system for approximately 30 years. She and her husband, Elmer Dossey, retired to Lake Brownwood in 1984. They moved to Kingwood, near Houston, in 2001. Mrs. Dossey was preceded in death Jan. 21, 2005, by her husband of 64 years, who was also a longtime Odessa educator. Mr. Dossey was principal of Burnet Elementary for over 26 years. Mr. and Mrs. Dossey each had 38-year public education careers in Texas. Mrs. Dossey was born in Henrietta on April 5, 1918. She received her bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville. Mrs. Dossey was preceded in death by her two sisters; and her three brothers. Mrs. Dossey is survived by her three sons, all graduates of Permian High School, Elmer Lynn and his wife, Tami, of Colony; Lee and Beauton Dossey of Kingwood; and Byron and Marsha Dossey in Arcadia, Okla. She also has six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Crosier-Pearson-Mayfield Funeral Home. Funeral services are being held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 at Crosier-Pearson-Mayfield Funeral Home in Cleburne. She will be buried in Rose Hill cemetery. Patricia Ann Daniels ODESSA - Patricia Ann Daniels, age 54 of Odessa, passed away on February 16, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2005, at the Frank W. Wilson Chapel. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Taylor’s Chapel cemetery in Comanche, Texas. Patricia was born May 29, 1950, in Brownwood, Texas, to Ray Berry Daniels and Reba Sledge Daniels. She came to Odessa in 1958. She was a Baptist. She had last worked for the Flourdaniel Construction Company in Odessa. Her sister, Louise Goodson and brothers, Jimmy Don Randall and Danny Ray Daniels preceded her in death. Survivors include her Mother, Reba Daniels of Odessa; brother, Ronald Wayne Price and his wife Diane of Anaheim, Calif.; sisters, Mary Lou Elder and her husband Wendell of Goldsmith, Linda Dodson and husband Manton of Odessa and Barbara Daniels, also of Odessa. “The Broken Chain” We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name, in life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the Chain will link again. Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Crispin Franco ODESSA - Crispin Franco died at 64 years old. He was born in Coyame, Mexico on February 23, 1940. He married Natalia Levario on March 12, 1960. He was a self-employed carpenter (Franco Cabinet Shop). Visitation for Mr. Franco will be held today from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Martinez Funeral Home with a rosary being said at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Josephs Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife Natalia Franco, his children, Fernando Franco of Odessa, Oscar Franco of Odessa, Eduardo Franco of Odessa, Laura Franco of Odessa and Crispin Franco Jr. III of Odessa, and his 18 grandchildren. He will be missed very much and remembered by all of us.
