Eunice Harold Simmons

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — Eunice Harold Simmons passed on Saturday, September 18, 2004.

She was the second of five children born to the proud parents and industrious family of Frank B. Bell, II and Ollie Bell, in LaMarque, Texas. She was baptized at Bell's Chapel Baptist Church. She graduated from Central High School, in Galveston, Texas in 1932, and from Bishop College, in Marshall, Texas in 1936. After teaching for one year at LaMarque Negro School, Eunice moved to Bremerton, Washington, where she worked in Puget Sound as a registrar in the administrative offices for the Navy. She met Walter W. Simmons, a Navy man, and they married in Seattle, Washington on November 19, 1943. Walter was assigned to San Diego in 1946, and Eunice stayed home while Walter fulfilled his military obligations all around the world.

Eunice established an active and dedicated membership with Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1948. She served as a booster of the Henry Williams Scholarship Fund for 24 years, beginning in 1980. Eunice was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Surviving Spouses and an Associate Member of Las Munecas Society. In 1995, she received the Woman of Distinction Award from Women Incorporated for her outstanding community service.

She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Epsilon Xi Omega Chapter, a charter member, a Golden Senior and a Life Member. She was also a member of Rutha M. Hicks Chapter #29 Order of Eastern Star - Norris Wright Cuney Grand Chapter - Prince Hall Affiliation.

Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, Walter of whom she shared 45 years of marriage; her brothers, Earl and Alonzo Bell and sister, Evelyn Bell Travis. She leaves to celebrate her remarkable life, a brother, Frank B. Bell, III, of Texas City; sister, Vera Bell Gary, of LaMarque; nieces and nephews, Alice Rene Bell, of Houston, Marsha Bell Jamison (L. J.), of San Diego, Lynette Bell Forte (Billy), of Rialto, California; Frank N. Bell, IV (Dotsie), of Bloomington, California, Cynthia Bell Malveaux (Louis), of LaMarque, Alfred Bell, of Texas City, Jacque Bell (Vivian), of Palestine, Sylvia Bell Hill (Henry), of LaMarque, Frankie Bell Haynes (Richard), of Texas City, Ollie Bell Davis (Jesse), of Channelview, Alma Bell Mack (Willie), of Hitchcock, Brenda Bell Streeter (Martin), of League City, Tracy Gary Justice (John), of Galveston; Godson, Andre Smith, of San Antonio; special friends, Bernice Small and Helen Dundee Nelson; and a host of great-nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Services will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at the Mainland Funeral Home Chapel, in LaMarque. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m., to service time Tuesday, at the chapel. Rev. Andrew Brown officiant. Burial will follow at Mainland Memorial cemetery, in Hitchcock.

George Leo Lauzon, Sr.

October 16, 1930 -September 21, 2004

Mr. George Leo Lauzon, Sr. died on September 21, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Lauzon, Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Fran Lauzon; his two children, George Leo Lauzon, Jr. and Frances Elaine Lauzon, both of Galveston; his two grandchildren, Melissa Ann Lauzon, of College Station, Texas, and George Leo Lauzon, III, of The Woodlands, Texas.

He is also survived by one sister, Mary Margaret Moreland, of Dickinson, and one brother, F.W. Lauzon, Jr., of La Marque.

George was born October 16, 1930, in Galveston. He attended Galveston public schools and graduated from Ball High in 1948.

He joined the Air Force in 1950 and served in Korea from June 1951 until June 1952. He was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad and Monsanto Chemical.

The pallbearers will be George Leo Lauzon, III, L.W. Giusti, S.E. Pomeroy, Tom Wickey, A.J. Danner, and W.E. Pennington, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Ahern, Andrew Danner, and Rudy Anders, M.D.

Visitation will be held at Malloy & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, September 26, 2004, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Monday, September 27, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Douglas Guthier will preside.

Kenneth Paul Mancuso

SANTA FE — Mr. Kenneth Paul Mancuso passed from this life Friday, September 24, 2004, at his home.

Born September 13, 1978, in Texas City, Mr. Mancuso spent most of his life in Santa Fe. He had been employed as a drywall installer, played guitar and was known to all as a joker and comedian.

Survivors include his father, Jack Mancuso, Jr. and wife, Rose of Elberta, Alabama; mother, Rheta Cox and husband, Bill Carpenter, of Santa Fe; grandparents, Eloyce Cox, of Santa Fe, Durlyn and Eddie Nelson, Helen Mancuso, of Santa Fe; daughter, Morgan Elizabeth Mancuso, of Katy; brothers, Ryan Cox and wife, Michele, of Santa Fe, Jack Clinton Mancuso, of Santa Fe; sisters, Laura Collard and husband, Brett, of Katy, Ginger Mancuso, of Gulf Shores, Alabama; niece, Sara Elizabeth Mancuso, of Santa Fe; nephew, Jack Wesley Mancuso, of LaMarque and numerous other nieces, nephews and other family.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 27, 2004, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Brother James Dorriety officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Jason Cox, Paul DeWit Cox, Bobby Mancuso, Pete Mancuso, Jr., Scott Mancuso and LaRoy Williamson.

Leslie Wm. Reil, Jr.

LANCASTER, TEXAS Leslie Wm. Reil, Jr., born, June 25, 1919, in Mobile, Ala., to Marie J. Lauzon Reil and Leslie Wm. Reil Sr., passed away Sept. 20, 2004, in Lancaster, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward M. Reil and grandson, John W. Hammock. He is survived by his four children; E. Anne Butler, Pat Hammock, John W. Reil, and Brenda J. Reil; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren and numerous cousins. Many knew him as "Bockie" and to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren he was known as "Pepaw". Leslie lived and worked in the Houston, Galveston and Beaumont area for 80 years. He was very family oriented and had intense interest in history, especially of this area and a great love of fishing, hunting, cattle, horses and the beauty of nature.

A memorial service will be held on, Monday, September 27, 2004, at Jack Rowe Funeral Home Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m. Anyone wishing to speak on his behalf at this service is invited to do so.

Dr. Rufus Hezekiah Stanton, Jr.

GALVESTON - Retired dentist Dr. Rufus Hezekiah Stanton, Jr., 79, transitioned peacefully to the other side on Sunday, September 19, 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Rufus Hezekiah Stanton, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Whitsitt Stanton; and his brother, Horace Devon Stanton.

Visitation will take place on Friday, September 24, 2004, from 12 noon until 6:30 p.m., followed by the family receiving friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Wynn Funeral Home, 602-32nd Street, Galveston, Texas.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Reedy Chapel AME Church, 2015 Broadway, Galveston Texas, with the Rev. Brenda Payne, officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Park East cemetery, Webster, Texas.

Dr. Stanton was born May 27, 1925, in Galveston, Texas, and graduated from Central High School, Wiley College and Meharry Medical College. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army as a S/SGT, Administrative Non-commissioned Officer at Headquarters Detachment, Quartermaster Corps.

Dr. Stanton was a faithful member and servant at Reedy Chapel AME Church, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and a member of the Board of Directors of United States National Bank, and later Frost Bank, for 25 years.

His professional affiliations include the Gulf State Dental Association, where he served as president, and the Charles A. George Dental Association.

Dr. Stanton served on the Charter Review Committee for the City of Galveston; Galveston Municipal Golf Board; St. Vincent's House Board of Directors; Mayor's Advisory Committee for Seniors and Disabled Citizens; and various committees for the Galveston Independent School District.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Janice Splane Stanton and their three children, son, Rufus H. Stanton, III and his wife, Virginia Stanton; daughter, Deborah Stanton Burke and her husband, Dr. William T. Burke, III; and son, Robert T. Stanton, II.

Billy, as he was fondly called, and Janice are blessed with six grandchildren and one great grandchild. They are Jahna Stanton Anyanwu and her husband Dike Anyanwu; Jared Michael Stanton and his fiance', Tania Sookia; William T. Burke, IV; Rebecca V. Burke; Stanton P. Burke; Matthew I. Burke; Amara Anyanwu; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Dr. Stanton will be greatly missed by his family, extended family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reedy Chapel AME Church.

Maria Sanchez

DICKINSON — Maria Sanchez, 77, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at her residence in Dickinson, Texas. Maria was born October 16, 1926, in Brownsville, Texas to Placido and Marcelina Ramos.

Survivors include four daughters, Racheal Coronado and husband, Manuel, Mary Baysore and husband, William, Hilda Bautista and husband, Alejo and Norma Terrazas and husband, Miguel; four sons, Lolo Soto and wife Velva, Ruben Sanchez and wife, Sarah, Pete Sanchez and wife, Donna and Robert Sanchez and wife Maggie and former daughter-in-law, Annie Chavez. Also surviving are twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 25, 2004, at 9 a.m. in the chapel of Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson with the Reverend Maria Garcia officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park East cemetery in Webster, Texas. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with Pastor Fernando Guel at the wake.
