Thomas R. Simmons

DICKINSON - Thomas R. Simmons, 84, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, went home to the Lord, Monday, January 26, 2004, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Tyler, Texas on December 1, 1919, he was the second born of four to Arthur Washington Simmons and Ruth Richardson Simmons. After graduating high school, Tom enrolled in classes at the University of Texas in Austin. After only one semester at UT he enlisted in the US Air Force where he graduated boot camp 5th out of 220 cadets. He subsequently transferred to the Army and was sent to Purdue University for one year to study Psychology. He was then sent to Europe where he served his country for the remainder of WWII. After the war, Tom returned to Austin and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Accounting. He was a member of the honorary accounting fraternity, BETA ALPHA PSI. Humble Oil (EXXON) hired him upon graduation and sent him to their production office in Bacliff, Texas. The Bacliff office was where Tom met Jacque, his wife of fifty-two years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dickinson of fifty-two years where he served as church treasurer, deacon, administrative board member, etc. His tireless service to the Lord was an example to all who knew him. Tom’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident throughout his life. During his thirty-two year career with Exxon he also had the energy to invent and obtain 18 patents, build and sell a washateria and dry cleaning business, several car washes, a fountain business, a shopping center, oil and gas interests and many real estate investments. His determination was extraordinary.

Tom’s loving and patient spirit will be with his wife, three sons, five grandchildren, one sister and the many friends who knew him. He never met anyone he didn’t like. Likewise his wit and kindness would charm those that met him. Anyone that knew Tom will miss him and think of his special spirit often. Finally losing the battle to his many illnesses near the end of his walk with us, he is now at rest and in the loving care of God.
