Ian Owen Ormsby

Ian Owen Ormsby born November 25, 1945, passed from this life December 30, 2004, at the age of 59. He was a 1965 graduate of Ball High School and 1987 graduate of Texas A&M Maritime Academy. He worked with the Galveston Historical Society for 20 years and also worked with Clayton Williams Foundation, George Mitchell Foundation. He owned MICO Frame Shop and Gallery. He designed and supervised the building of 61st fishing pier.

Mr. Ormsby was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew A. and Wanda Ormsby, Sr. and is survived by nephew, Kurt Letzring of Dickinson; Aunt, Mae Price of Massachusetts; brother, Andrew A. Ormsby, Jr. of Sikeston, Missouri; sister, Marcia Letzring of Waco; nieces, Kathy Blocker of Magnolia; Linda Rife of Waco, Laura Streetman of Hewitt; nephew, Terry Boyd Ormsby of Dover, Arkansas.

KINGWOOD — Charles J. Haughn, 89, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2005, in Kingwood, Texas.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Haughn was born April 15, 1915 in Kansas. He was a retired pipefitter. He served his country in the United States Navy.

Survivors include his daughters Donna Hardin of Huffman and Jackie Monks and husband Terry, of Colorado; grandchildren, Darrin, Kevin and Greg Monks, Montana and Crystal Hardin; brother-in-law George McCoy and wife Mary; nephew Steve McCoy; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Donald Bernard 'Donnie' Halstead, Sr.

SANTA FE — Donald Bernard "Donnie" Halstead, Sr., 67, of Santa Fe, peacefully departed from this life and into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 2, 2005, at his residence surrounded by family and friends.

Donnie was born July 10, 1937, in St. Albans, West Virginia to William "Bill" and Leoma "Peggy" Halstead. He graduated from La Marque High School class of 1955 and later served his country for six years in the U. S. Navy as an Aviation Electrician. He was a member of Baypoint Church in Texas City. At the time of his death, Donnie was the Owner/President of D-Bar Construction.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of thirty years, Nancy Thomas Halstead. Also sharing in his loss are his children, Donnie Halstead, Jr. and wife Andrea, John Halstead and wife Sandy, Rhonda Halstead Wilson and husband Scooter, Gregory Halstead and wife Pamela; his grandchildren, Jenny Wilson, Bryan Wilson, Amanda Halstead, Lyndsey Harvey and Tripp Halstead and one great-grandchild Bailey Wilson.

He is also survived by a brother Robert Carl Halstead and wife Pam; two sisters Betty Jean Moss and husband Shepard and Joyce Kay Harrington and husband Bobby along with a host of other loving family members and wonderful friends.

Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, January 4, 2005, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Baypoint Church in Texas City with Pastor Bobby Gass officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Pallbearers will be Jim Martin, Jimmy Hayley, Jimmy Haynes, Jeff Tyson, Wayne Nutter, Patrick Doyle and George Conner. Honorary pallbearers will be Carolyn Dyer, Lebba Kropp, Mary Kay Tayloe, Jimmy Hayes, Gus Plate and all employees of D-Bar Construction.

The family would like to thank the staff of University Of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and a special thanks to Kathleen Jeffcoat, Linda Woods and the A-Med Hospice staff.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Halstead's family is requesting that memorials in his memory be made to University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 129, Texas City, TX 77592-0129.

Anthony (Tony) Allen Gappa

LEAGUE CITY — Anthony (Tony) Allen Gappa, 59, of League City, TX passed away December 30, 2004, in Houston, TX after a battle with cancer. Tony was born June 11, 1945, to the late Frank and Virginia Gappa in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Tony served his country in the United States Army. Tony was employed by Standard Life & Accident Insurance Company for over 43 years. He was a very kind and patient man with a wonderful sense of humor. He put others first and will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Laura Gappa; daughter, Marci Montemayor and husband Larry; son, Thomas V. Gappa; grandchildren, Greg, Megan, and Kaitlyn; sisters, Catherine Dooley and Mary Gappa.

Visitation will be held at Jack Rowe Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 5, 2005, from 5 - 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday, January 6, 2005, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1612 E. Walker League City, TX, 77573. A private internment will follow.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be sent to Southwest Bank, 303 East Main, League City, TX. 77573, for a college fund set up for Thomas Gappa.

Merle DeWalt

TEXAS CITY — Merle DeWalt passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 2, 2005, at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her husband Rankin and her son Gordon.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at Emken Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. Burial will be at Chalk cemetery in Trinity following the funeral services.

Pallbearers will be her nephews Alan Hall, Gary Hall, Gary Broach, her grandson Paul Freiwald, James Barger and honorary pallbearer Jimmy Menefee. Visitation will be 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at the funeral home.

Merle was a member of the First Baptist Church of Texas City and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary DeWalt; her grandson Paul Freiwald and her granddaughter Leigh Freiwald. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Linnie Slaughter and many nieces and nephews.

Merle was blessed with many loving friends and her family is deeply grateful for their love and support during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Chalk cemetery Association, RT 4, Box 3725, Trinity, TX 75862.

LEAGUE CITY — Ted Pennington, III, 35, passed away January 1, 2005, at his residence in League City, Texas. He was born February 13, 1969, in Bay City, Texas to Ted Pennington, Jr., and Frances Pennington. Ted was employed as an environmental technician with Team, Inc.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 6, 2005, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 5, 2005, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He is survived by wife, Diana; step-children, Julia Elizabeth Dunham and Amanda Ruth Dunham; parents, Ted and Christine Pennington; grandmother Mamie Pennington; step-grandmother, Norma Plasek; brother, Christopher Pennington; and half-brother, Toby Lively and half-sister Stephanie Lively.

Frank John Massa

BAYOU VISTA — Frank John Massa, 72, passed away Monday, January 3, 2005, at his home in Bayou Vista. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 6, 2005, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home, Galveston, with the Rev. Douglas Guthier, Pastor of First Lutheran Church, Galveston, officiating. Burial will follow services Thursday at Grace Memorial Park cemetery in Santa Fe, Texas. Mr. Massa’s family will be receiving friends for visitation at the funeral home Wednesday evening, January 5, 2005, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

A lifelong resident of Galveston County, Mr. Massa was born August 1, 1932, on Galveston Island. He entered the United States Navy Reserve in June, 1951 and was honorably discharged on June 11, 1955, with the rank of Seaman Recruit. For many years he was employed in the Bottling Department of Falstaff Brewery and also for Sterling Chemical until such time that he retired after more than twenty years as a chemical operator. Upon his retirement, he moved to Bayou Vista where he enjoyed living on the water canals of the Bayou Vista community. Frank enjoyed many past times like hunting and fishing or cooking a favorite family recipe of homemade Italian spaghetti sauce, dressing or a good pot of homemade gumbo. He was an active member of the Lowry Fitness Center where he enjoyed exercising with friends and routine fitness work-outs. Perhaps his greatest enjoyments, however, was time spent with his children and grandchildren who were the greatest joys of his life along with his wife, Jerre Sue. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many who leaves behind many cherished memories to remember him by. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Massa is preceded in death by his parents, John and Vera Massa and also his three brothers, James Anthony "Jack" Massa, Johnny Massa and M.P. "Bubba" Massa. He leaves behind many wonderful memories with his loving family, wife, Jerre Sue Massa of Bayou Vista; and his children, John Paul Massa and wife, Melody of Webster, Texas, James Alvie Massa, Sr. of Crosby, Texas, Jerry Joseph Massa of Texas City, Texas and Jay Frank Massa and wife, Georgia of League City, Texas. Sharing in his loss, too, are Mr. Massa’s grandchildren, James Alvie Massa, Jr., Wendy Sue Massa, Frank John David Massa, John Ryan Massa, Callie Jo Massa, Thomas Jay Massa, Ryan Alan Cofer, Ashley Cofer and Adam Cofer. Mr. Massa is also survived by his only sister, Vera Massa Danner and husband, Jack of Galveston, numerous loving nieces and nephews, cousins, Susie Gray and husband, Buddy and Morris Fussell and wife Sharon, a host of other loving family, most especially, Carla Jo Massa, his former daughter-in-law and mother to grandchildren, John Ryan and Callie Jo and many, many, good friends. His memories will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him, always.

Pallbearers will be Edward Castano, Danny Castano, Tony Quevedo, Steve Davis, Jack Danner and Andrew Danner, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be John "Jack" Doreck, Morris Fussell, Buddy Gray, Danny Sendejas and James A. Danner.

Mr. Massa’s family would like to give a very special thank you to Amed Community Hospice for the wonderful care given during these most difficult days. Your kind attention and caregiving is most appreciated. Thank you, again, for your thoughtfulness.
