Wayne Whiteside

Wayne E. Whiteside September 29, 1942 July 30, 2010

He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Barbara of Slaton; daughter, Crystal Michelle of Lubbock; three sons of Arkansas. A host of grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Brother of Arkansas; two sisters of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and three sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 6, 2010 in Sanders Memorial Chapel.

Trela Walker

Trela Winifred Walker, 90, of Lubbock was born October 20, 1919 in Claremore, Oklahoma to Jess Irvin and Ola Lee Mezel. Trela graduated from Claremore High School where she excelled in all academic areas but she especially loved math. She spoke fondly of her classmates and had the time of her life at her 50th high school reunion.

She married Dean Walker at the age of 20 and became a homemaker and mother as well as the wife of a farmer. Today, her children will rise up and call her blessed. Proverbs 31:28

Trela was a Brownie and Cub Scout leader, a member of the P.T.A. and a member of the Coronado Booster Club when her three children were growing up and attending the Lubbock Public Schools in the 1950's through the early 1970's.

Trela was a member of First Baptist Church, but more important, gave her life to Christ at the age of 20. She truly understood that there is hope in the name of the Lord. Now, she is with the Lord Jesus Christ as she passed away on August 24, 2010 just three short months after losing her beloved husband of 70 years.

Trela leaves behind her three children, Cheryl Spears (Hershel) of Lubbock, Linda Fuhrman (Greg) of San Antonio, and Dan Walker of Oklahoma City. Her children's children are a crown she wears proudly. Proverbs 17:6 They are Lauren Spears of Lubbock, Hayden Spears of Lubbock, Jenna Spears of Denton, Nicholas Fuhrman (Michelle) of Round Rock, Lindsey Fuhrman of San Antonio, Clayton Walker (Darby) of Lubbock, Travis Walker of Lubbock, Justin Walker of Lubbock, and Jordan Walker of Lubbock. Her great-grandchildren are Levi Walker, Cobin Walker, and Graham Fuhrman. They will all deeply miss their Grandma and Nana.

Trela is also survived by her loving brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Lucy Mezel of Amarillo. Preceding her in life after death are her parents, Jess Mezel and Ola Pinkston, her husband Dean Walker, and her beloved brother and sister-in-law Cecil and Dorothy Mezel of Amarillo.

Her graveside service will be Friday, August 27, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the City of Lubbock cemetery. There she will be buried next to her husband and be joined for eternity. She longed for the day they would be together again. "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24 "Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." I Corinthians 13:7-8.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggest donations to First Baptist Church, 2201 Broadway
Lubbock, TX 79401.

Cecil Ray

Cecil E. Ray, 96, of Lubbock passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2010. He was born February 28, 1914 in Coleman, Texas to Isaac Willis and Agnes Mary (Mitchell) Ray. He graduated from Content High School in Runnells County and moved to Lubbock in 1939. Cecil served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Maud Alice Tyson April 7, 1940 in Novice, Texas. She preceded him in death on October 15, 1977. Cecil worked for Baldridge Bakery for 40 years before retiring. He was a longtime member of the Oakwood United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two sisters, Grace Killingsworth of Del Rio and Opal Henson of Monahans; two brothers, James A. “Butch” Ray of Lubbock and Ronold Ray of Monahans; several nieces & nephews; and very dear lifelong friends, the Foster family. He was preceded in death by a sister; and four brothers.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Sanders Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wendell Horn officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Richard K. Gregory

Richard K. Gregory, April 28, 1930 - June 25, 2003. Isaiah 40: 31, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Beloved husband, father and grandfather entered into his heavenly rest on June 25, 2003. Richard was born in Chicago on April 28, 1930 to Josephine and Kasmir Gregory. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Janet; Children, Judy (Jim) Gleason, Robert (Cindy) Gregory, Sandra (T. J.) Faust and Susan (Ronnie) Andrade; Grandchildren, Steven, Ricky, Robbie, Melissa, Eric, Amanda, Gabriel, and Christina; Sister, Irene Krupa of Sarasota, Florida; Numerous Nieces, Nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daughter, Diane, and Granddaughter, Megan. Richard was an example of Christian love and was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, The Equestrian Order of the Holy Seplecur, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; and Alhambra, Carmelite Order of the Little Flower. Richard started his career in the grocery industry at the age of 14, working his way up from a stock boy in Chicago and after a long successful career retired from HEB as Vice President of Pantry Marketing. He was known as one of the most knowledgeable people in the grocery industry and mentored many people during his career. He was a Veteran serving in the U. S. Air Force for 4 years. While in military service, he met Janet Whelan who was also serving in the Air Force Nurse Corps. They married one year later. Richard will be deeply missed by his family, having provided them with a loving home and deep faith. A Rosary will be recited Friday, June 27 at 7:00 P.M. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne. The Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, June 28, at 9:30 A.M., also at St. Peter's. The family wishes in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, Always and Forever Memorial and Honor Program, Attn: ADA Web, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720, Children's Inn of Boerne, 216 W. Highland Ave., Boerne, TX 78006 or to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Pallbearers are Ricky Gleason, Robbie Gleason, Steven Faust, Jim Gleason, Eric Faust, Melissa Behle, T.J. Faust and Ronnie Andrade .

Alma Hagens

Alma Doris (Darby) Hagens was born November 21, 1914 in Needmore to William A and Pearl Catherine Darby. She was a longtime resident of Wilson and Lubbock. Alma owned and operated Fabulous Fabrics and was also employed at the Quilt Shop for many years. In early years, she was a teller at Wilson Stat Bank in Wilson.

Survivors include her son, Billy Lee and wife, Wanda; three grandchildren, Kathy, Kent and Shanna; four great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Our Lord took her home with the sweet smell of flowers on Monday the 2nd of August, 2010. She was a Baptist and loved the Lord.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 6, 2010 at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Grace Gibbs

Grace Pauline Gibbs passed away in Lubbock on August 3 at the age of 92 having lived a life of selfless devotion to her family. It wouldn’t be possible to count the lives she has touched with her kind manner and positive approach to life. To put it simply, she loved everyone and everyone loved her.

Grace was born on a farm near Magnolia, Arkansas on January 31, 1918. She spent her childhood in Abilene and most of her adult life in Lubbock. At the time of her death she was living in her home of over 55 years. During her child rearing years, Grace actively supported boy scouts, girl scouts, PTA, little league, plus a myriad of other family and community volunteer activities. She was an avid gardener and up to the end was supervising the planting of flowers and the maintenance of her yard. A proud member of the “greatest generation”, she loved her country and had little patience for those who didn’t share her patriotism. She had a keen interest in current events and started every day with coffee, the newspaper, and a critique of the day’s news. She took pride in her extraordinary sewing skills and loved to describe herself as an “excellent seamstress”.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her daughter Sandra, and her son Mitchell. She is survived by her daughter Patricia of Bullard; her son Tom of Lubbock; and her son Gary of Converse. Additionally, she was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at Resthaven on Friday at 10:00 under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

L. D. "Dave" Burgess

L. D. "Dave" Burgess of Lubbock departed this life the evening of Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the age of 87. He was born December 5, 1922 in Strong, Arkansas. He was a World War II veteran, serving overseas in the Army Air Corps. Dave farmed locally until retiring in 1998.

Survivors include; Sue, his wife of 54 years; daughters, Susan, Beverly, Rhonda and Donna; grandson, Thomas; and great-grandchildren, Scarlet and Aidan will cherish his memory with graveside services at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Levelland cemetery with Pastor Dustin Patterson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Kenneth Dean Renehan

Kenneth Dean Renehan, age 41, a resident of San Antonio since 1992, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2003. He was born in Burbank, CA, on August 24, 1961, the son of Walter Claude and Patricia Wright Renehan. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army and a member of the Churchill First Baptist Church. Mr. Renehan is survived by his Mother, Patricia Ammann; Father, Walter Renehan; Sisters, Pamela Hanson and Susan Rickard; Uncles and Aunts, Barton and Joanne Wright, Melvin and Carol Wright, and Roger and Joan Wright. Visitation was on Monday, May 5, from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, May 6, at 2:00 P.M. at Vaughan's Funeral Home, with Rev. Neil Bennett, Officiating. Burial with Military Honors followed in the Boerne cemetery.

Dorothy Bass

Dorothy Bass, 94 years of age, of Lubbock, died on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Carillon House.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Sanders Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be one hour preceding the service and burial will follow at City of Lubbock cemetery. Bill Starcher and Joe Burks, nephew will conduct the service.

Dorothy was born October 15, 1915 in Maysville, Oklahoma to W.T. and Mittie Lucas. She married Clarence Bass on October 12, 1940 in Lubbock and moved to the Canyon community where they farmed for 25 years until moving to Lubbock in 1965. She owned and operated Dorothy Bass Monogram Shop with her husband until her retirement.

Dorothy taught children’s Bible classes in Idalou for twenty years. After moving to Lubbock, she attended Sunset and Broadway Church of Christ.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; two brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Bonnie Bass; nieces Gayle Burks of Lubbock and Peggy Igo of Midland; and a nephew, George Igo of Spring. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who affectionately call her “Aunt Dorothy.”

The family would like to thank the employees at Carillon House on 2 South for the excellent care they provided.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Children’s Home of Lubbock or Broadway Prison Ministries at 1924 Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79401.
