Erma LaVerne McCown

The funeral service for Erma LaVerne McCown, age 97, of Abilene, Texas, and formerly of Littlefield, Texas, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, in the chapel of the First Baptist Church, Littlefield, with the Rev. J. Earl Dunn officiating. The Rev. Joe Stewart, pastor of First Baptist Church, Littlefield, will assist. Burial will follow in Littlefield Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Hammons Funeral Home of Littlefield.

Mrs. McCown went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007. She was born on Aug. 28, 1910, in Hillsboro, Texas, to Jesse Austin and Rebecca Emmaline (Webb) Palmer. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and Hillsboro Junior College, and she also attended North Texas State College at Denton and Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She married Hooper McCown on December 21, 1930, in Durant, Okla. They moved to Littlefield in 1948.

As a sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. McCown invested her life in the lives of countless students who have matured into contributing adults. Mrs. McCown was named Outstanding Teacher of 1968-1969 by the Littlefield Rotary Club, and she was chosen Teacher of the Year by the Classroom Teachers Association in 1974. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Littlefield, and she was also active with the Lamb Healthcare Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hooper McCown, on May 23, 1975.

Mrs. McCown served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Littlefield for over forty years and as a volunteer at Lamb Health Center in Littlefield for twenty-five years.

She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Sue Thomas, of East Lansing, Mich.; one son, Palmer (Patsy) McCown, of Abilene, Texas; three grandchildren, Christopher (Jeanneth) Thomas, Stephanie McCown (Jim) Markgraf, and Michael (Barb) McCown; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Thomas, Jon Michael Markgraf, and Christopher Markgraf.

Serving as pallbearers: Bill Jeffries, Bill Altom, Chris Thomas, Roger Lowe, Roger Jones, and Don McCarty.

Don J. Ketchum

Services for Don J. Ketchum, 78, of Hale Center will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 at First United Methodist Church officiated by Don Robertson, Pastor, College Heights Baptist Church Plainview, Texas, and Reverend Jimmy Cameron of First United Methodist Church, Hale Center. Burial will be held under the direction of Abell Funeral Home in Hale Center.

Mr. Ketchum died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007 at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

He was born Oct. 8, 1929. He married Margie Ables on July 25, 1948 in Conway, Texas. He has lived in Hale Center since 2000 moving from Edmonson, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Ketchum of Hale Center, Texas; four daughters, Belinda Spencer of Wimberly, Texas, Donna Harris of Lubbock, Texas, Teri Reeves of Plainview, Texas, and Debbie Roberts of Hale Center, Texas; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister Nita Ramming of White Deer, Texas; a brother Esteene Ketchum of Borger, Texas.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Willie Lee Johnson

Mrs. Willie Lee Johnson, longtime resident of Lubbock, died Monday, Oct. 22, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25th, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, followed by burial at Resthaven cemetery. Her family and friends will gather to visit from 6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Rix Funeral Directors 1901 Broadway.

She is preceded in death by her husband Henry D. Johnson. Survivors include her daughters Jerry Hardwick and Sharon Hardin and son Floyd Dean Johnson. Four grandsons, Greg and Matthew Hardwick and Bonner and Joseph Cameron, and a granddaughter, Kellee Matlock, also survive her. Mrs. Johnson had six great grandchildren.

William Andrew Clifford

William Andrew Clifford, retired Lubbock attorney and judge, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the age of 85.

Bill was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Jackson, Miss., to Charles and Mary Clifford.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, LaVerne; daughter, Carolyn Fowler; and brother, Charles Leo Clifford of Woonsocket, R.I.

He is survived by two children, Patricia Siulte and husband Rimas of San Antonio, and William A. Clifford, Jr. and wife Judy of Lubbock; son-in-law, Mike Fowler of Lewisville; grandchildren, Michele Wheeler and husband Jeff of Dallas, Kristina Tolsma and husband Andy of San Antonio, Denise Caughron and husband Terry of Lubbock, Stacey Harris and husband Clint of Mansfield, Vytas Siulte and wife Aimee of Dallas, Mickey Fowler of Boise, Idaho, Scott Clifford of Lubbock, Tracy Mackin and husband Johnathon of Jacksonville, N.C., Bryan Nickel and wife Cyndie of Lubbock; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 16075 N. Evans Rd, Selma, TX. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX, under the direction of Porter Loring Mortuary North in San Antonio.

Juanita Gray Breece

Juanita Gray Breece, 88, of Fort Worth passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at a local healthcare facility.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Eagle Mountain Baptist Church. Committal service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lubbock Municipal cemetery in Lubbock.

Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Breece was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Bruno, Ark., was married to Leland Breece Sept. 24, 1939, in Bransom, Mo., and they moved to Lubbock in 1943. After her son and daughter were grown, Juanita worked at Stumbaugh Drug Store and Dunlaps Department Store in Lubbock for many years. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Lubbock. The last seven years she had made her home in Fort Worth with her daughter, but in her heart Lubbock was always her home.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, fishing and was known to have a green thumb because of the way she grew beautiful plants.

Survivors include her son, Eugene Breece and Margie of Lubbock; daughter, Sharon Adams and Bill of Fort Worth; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one due in April; and three great-grandchildren.

Esther Rank

Services for Esther Rank, 73, of Lubbock will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, in Sanders Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Elizabeth Abraham officiating. Interment will be in the City of Lubbock cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

He opened her eyes on Jan. 9, 1934 and closed her eyes on Oct. 12, 2007.

She was born in Ganado. She was a LVN Surgical Nurse and a talented seamstress.

Survivors include son, Steve Nava; daughter, Ruth Annette Coon and husband Ronnie; son, Austin Glenn Simmons and wife Olivia; grandchildren, Lori Nava-Myers, Jason Nava, Brittany Nicole Coon, Adam Blake Coon, Ashley Simmons and Kimberly Simmons; step-son, Keith Rank; step-grandchildren, Juanita and Jessica; brothers, Marcus, Robert and Henry; sisters, Edith, Alice, Rosie, Raquel, Mary Helen and Irene.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mauro and Fidencia Estrello; husbands, George Lepel and Cecil Rank; brother, Joe Estrello; a step-grandson, Jedidiah; and niece, Barbara Hinojosa.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Lubbock.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Sanders Funeral Home.

William "Leon" Wilson

William "Leon" Wilson, 76, of Childress passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2007. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Childress, with the Rev. John Givens and the Rev. Randal Wilson officiating. The family will receive visitors from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Childress Funeral Home under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

Leon married Winna Castleberry June 17, 1950, in Childress. While employed as Project Superintendent for Bailey Bridge of Abilene, he proudly helped construct Loop 289 of Lubbock. In Center, Colo., he operated a mechanic shop, and he also farmed there. Moving to Texas, he continued to farm and ranch and was well known as the "best hay bailer in four counties." In his later years, he enjoyed working with his sons as Superintendent for Dan Wilson Homes and Elmwood Construction of Lubbock. He attended Community Christian Church of Lubbock and was currently a member of Carey Baptist.

Leon is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Troy; and a sister, Nadine.

He is survived by his wife, Winna Wilson of Childress; sons, Van Wilson and wife Carolyn of Lubbock, Dan Wilson and wife Lisa of Lubbock, and Randy Wilson and wife Becky of Childress; daughters, Ann Morris of Lubbock and Jan Grizzle of Lubbock; sisters, Evelyn Hester of Childress, Melba Helm and husband Albert of Childress, and Maxine Cole of Fredericksburg; brothers, Joe Wilson of Vernon and Wayne Wilson of Pleasanton; brother-in-law, Huck Castleberry and wife Wanna of Childress; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his adopted family, Dr. Scott Myers and wife Susan and their children of Wichita Falls.

The family wishes memorials are sent to VistaCare Hospice of Lubbock or Carey Baptist Church Building Fund.
