Gary Dale Wood

Gary Dale Wood, 63, of Lubbock, passed away May 5, 2008. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008 in the sanctuary of Shadow Hills Baptist Church. Dr. Randy Rogers will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Mr. Wood was born Aug. 31, 1944 in Lubbock, to parents, Bertha and Sterling "June" Wood. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired after 35 years as a Carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Survivors include his mother, Bertha Wood, of Lubbock; his wife of 38 years, Linda Wood, of Lubbock; daughter and son-in-law, Kiffany and Jeff Landress of Littleton, Colo.; and his sister, Donna Ward and her family, of Arlington.

Walter Michael Windsor

Walter Michael Windsor, age 89, died Feb. 29, 2008. He moved to Lubbock in 1963 and managed KLBK TV and Radio. Details of his life are provided at www.walterwindsor.com. Walter Windsor is survived by four children, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one brother. A celebration of the life of Walter M. Windsor will be held at the Orlando Repertory Theatre in Orlando, Fla. on March 10th, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Linda Mires

Memorial services for Linda Lee Mires, 61, of Lubbock will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Wiseman officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.

She died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002.

She was born Feb. 10, 1941, in Big Spring and in 1950 moved to Lubbock, where she graduated from Lubbock High School in 1959. After living in Dimmitt for about 20 years, she moved back to Lubbock in 1981 and married Raymond Mires on Aug. 31, 1991 in Lubbock. She had served 15 years as executive administrator of the Museum of Texas Tech University Association.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Lubbock Women's Club, the Lubbock Symphony Guild, Achievement Rewards for College Scientists and Lubbock Country Club and served as an officer in several of these organizations.

She was also a member of the Texas Association of Museums and the American Association of Museums.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sheryn Cannon of Clyde; two stepdaughters, Sharilyn Vernon of Midland and Leigh Mires of Houston; a son, James Roberts of Denison; a stepson, Evin Mires of Los Angeles, Calif.; her mother, Helen Smith, of Lubbock; two brothers, Felton Smith of Denison and Robert Smith of Lubbock; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor following services.

The family suggests memorials to the Museum of Texas Tech University Association, P. O. Box 43191, Lubbock, TX 79409 or to the music department of First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79401.

Grover E. Murray

Grover E. Murray, 86, died Thursday, May 22, 2003. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium and Sculpture Court, Texas Tech University Museum, 4th and Indiana, in Lubbock. He was born in Maiden, N.C., on Oct. 26, 1916, to Grover Elmer Murray and Lucy Lore Murray. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to nearby Newton, N.C. where he attended public schools. Dr. Murray earned his baccalaureate from the University of North Carolina and his masters and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. He began his career in industry by working as a research geologist for the Louisiana Geological Survey and then as a geologist for Magnolia Petroleum Co., after which he returned to LSU as a Professor of Stratigraphy. While at LSU, he served as chairman of the Department of Geology, Boyd Professor of Geology, and Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs. In 1965, while serving in this post, he was recruited by the Board of Regents of Texas Tech College to become President. He served as the eighth President of Texas Tech University from 1966-76 and as the first President of Texas Tech University School of Medicine at Lubbock from 1971-76. Dr. Murray worked as a geological consultant for over four decades, including work on all continents and participation in oil and gas discoveries in central Australia, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. His last research interest concentrated on the tectonics of southwestern United States and northern Mexico. During his presidency he also served on the National Science Board, making numerous trips to Antarctica. The Murray Foreland in Marie Byrd Land was named in his honor. The Ranching Heritage Center and the International Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ICASALS) at Texas Tech were established during his tenure. Dr. Murray participated actively in various professional and governmental organizations, having been President of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, President and Sidney Powers Medallist of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and member of the Council of the Geological Society of America. He was President and Ben H. Parker Medallist of the American Institute of Professional Geologists, and President and Ian Campbell Medallist of the American Geological Institute. He also received the Hollis D. Hedberg Award in Energy, the Antarctica Service Medal, and Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of North Carolina and Louisiana State University. He was designated as a Texas Distinguished Scientist in 1986. Dr. Murray was author of over 150 publications plus many special reports and articles. Memorials may be given to the Grover E. Murray Presidential Scholarship or the Grover E. Murray Endowment in Geology through the Texas Tech Foundation, P.O. Box 41081, Lubbock, TX 79409-1081. They were the parents of Martha Murray Poag and Dr. Barbara Elizabeth Murray Baca. He married Sally Marie Sowell Williams on Oct. 26, 1986. He is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters, Martha and Barbara; grandchildren, Tracy Poag, Marla Poag, and Graham Poag; great-grandsons, Graham Nathan Poag and Caleb Samuel Poag; and brother, James L. Murray and sister-in-law Carolyn Sowell of Midland.

Maria Macias

Rosary for Maria Teresa Macias, 79, of Lubbock will be at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the same church with the Rev. David Cruz officiating.

Burial will be in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Chapel of Angels Funeral Home of Lubbock.

She died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001.

She was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Kyle and married Juan Macias in 1941 in Martindale. She was self-educated and came to the Lubbock area in 1939. She was employed by the Texas Tech Museum in the custodial department for about 20 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and the Guadalupanas Society.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Jose Valentine and Roberto Macias, both of Lubbock, and Julian Salazar of Midland; five daughters, Consuela Pena and Eva Gomez, both of Lubbock, Louysa Macias of Baltimore, Md., Jane Ramona Macias of Metairie, La., and Berta Davila of Oklahoma City, Okla.; five brothers, Domingo and Antonio Delgado, both of Houston, Juan and Thomas Delgado, both of Lubbock, and Ismal Delgado of Dallas; two sisters, Juanita Martinez and Ruby Alcorta, both of Lubbock; 40 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Queenelle Schmidt

Services for Queenelle Maurine Huff Schmidt, 73, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ford Memorial Chapel-First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Ballard officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

She died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1927, in Rochester. She grew up in Levelland and graduated high school in 1944. She first attended Texas Tech in 1944 and later graduated in 1981 with a bachelor of arts in foreign language.

She married Bob Huff on June 13, 1959, in Lubbock. He died on July 3, 1996. She married Frank Schmidt on Aug. 8, 1998, in Lubbock.

She was active in the community with memberships in the League of Women Voters, Beta Sigma Phi, Lubbock Women's Club, Texas Tech Museum Association, Texas Tech Ex-Students Association, Texas State Bar Auxiliary, St. Mary Covenant Lakeside Auxiliary and the Panhandle-South Plains Fair Association. She was a member of Grace Class of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Candy Huff of Austin, Toni Huff of Cypress and Sherry Huff of Long Pine, Neb.; a stepson, Harley Huff of Lubbock; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sanders Funeral Home.

Jerry D. Henderson

Services for Jerry D. Henderson, 79, of Lubbock, will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven.

Jerry passed away on Sunday, May 4th.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1928, in Wichita, Kan., to Arthur Lee and Rose Stout Henderson. He married Judy McWhorter in Wichita on May 26, 1966, and was a member of St. John's Methodist Church.

Jerry owned and operated Dictaphone Sales Agency until 1978 when he began Jerrold's, designing and manufacturing jewelry.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Craig and wife Sharon of Lubbock; grandsons, Landon, Bransen and Grant; a sister, Rosemary Lincoln of Vero Beach, Fla.; nephews, Dan-forth and Nathaniel Lincoln; nieces, Connie Van Gilder and Marla Glover.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock or the American Cancer Society.

Earl W. Johnson

Graveside services for Earl W. Johnson, 80, of Lubbock will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Resthaven Memorial Park, with Rev. Mel Hooten officiating.

Earl W. Johnson was born May, 14, 1927, in Madison County, Tenn., to the late Irvin W. and Ora (Britton) Johnson. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Earl married Lois Stout Nov. 18, 1952, in Seguin.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lois of Lubbock; sister, Mary Lee Ervin of Boliver, Tenn.; brother, Charles Johnson of Olive Branch, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews.

Billy Guinn Jones

Billy Guinn Jones, 73, passed away on April 26, 2008, in Levelland. Bill was born on May 30, 1934, in Grassland, to Carl and Ella Mae Jones. He married LaRue Stevens on Dec. 25, 1957. A graduate of Post High School, Bill received his BBA in banking and finance from Texas Tech University and served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He farmed in Garza and Lynn counties. Bill began his banking career as a National Bank Examiner in the State of Virginia and throughout the West Texas area. He served as an officer and director of the Bank Administration Institute and was a graduate of both the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the National Commercial Lending Graduate School of Banking at the University of Oklahoma. Bill was an officer of the First National Bank of Levelland, President and CEO of Citizens Bank of Slaton, Plains State Bank in Plains and South Plains Bank, Levelland. He also served as president of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, president of the Levelland Goldcoats Organization (Ambassadors) and as a director of the Levelland Development Foundation. One community service activity for which he was most proud was the time spent as a Levelland Little League Baseball Umpire. Bill was a member of First Baptist Church, Levelland and an avid fast pitch softball pitcher throughout this area. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ella Mae Jones. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, LaRue; son, Steve and wife Carrla of Levelland; daughter, D'Les of Dallas; three grandchildren, Tye, Caycee and Cyanne Jones of Levelland; two sisters, Dorothy Custer and husband Cordell of Cincinnati, Ohio and Cerretha Rose and husband Jerry of Cedar Park; and two nieces and a nephew.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2008, at the funeral home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at First Baptist Church in Levelland, with Dr. Steve Vernon officiating. Graveside services will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Terrace cemetery in Post, with Terry Hancock, officiating. Services are under care of George Price Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock or the First Baptist Church Library, P. O. Box 700, Levelland, Texas 79336.
