Helen Louise Perkins

Services for Helen Louise Perkins, 77, of Plains will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2008, at Plains First Baptist Church, with Rev. Bill Wright officiating. Burial will be in Plains cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

Helen passed away Saturday, April 12, 2008, in Brownfield. She was born Sept. 22, 1930, in Dennison, to William Eli and Pina Mabel Goldston. She was raised in Brownfield. She married Roy R. Perkins, Feb. 2, 1951, in Clovis, N.M. They moved to Plains in 1960 where they farmed until retirement in 1987. Roy preceded her in death Nov. 27, 200l. Helen was a member of Northside Baptist Church of Brownfield.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Toni Jones and husband Gary of Plains and Brenda Conner and husband Ray of Loop; six grandchildren, Amy Gunter and husband Clint, Stacey Sutton, Calley Conner and wife Meagan, Toby Conner, April Conner and Jayson Conner; three great grandchildren, Brice, Mallory and Erin Gunter; and a sister, Loie Hart of Brownfield.

Barbara A. Green Cooper

Barbara A. Green Cooper, 92, was called to be with her Lord and Savior on April 11, 2008. Her demise was a consequence of congestive heart failure.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Sanders Memorial Chapel, with Rev. John Ballard officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

She was born in Grandfield, Okla., on Aug. 9, 1915, to Joseph and Arminta Green.

Barbara's recent passion was focused on her grandchildren, Nikolai Cooper, 22, of Tyler, and Ross Cooper, 43, of Dallas, with whom she exhibited unbridled love.

Barbara just completed Newt Gingrich's book, Real Change, and communicated that copies be sent to her grandchildren. Barbara was an active member of the Daughters of American Revolution where she was a past president of the Nancy Anderson Chapter in Lubbock. Barbara and her colleagues at DAR gave presentations about Lubbock history and relevant statues and monuments.

Barbara was a major partner in ranching and farming in Motley and Floyd counties and in Kansas where she also coached girls' basketball and taught history and government. Barbara was a teacher and counselor in LISD during the 1960's through 1980.

She and her four brothers are graduates of Texas Tech.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, George, Clovis, and Truman. Survivors include her brother, Lynde of Smyer; and her sons, Kern of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Grant of Lubbock.

Barbara requested memorials to the First Baptist Church in Lubbock.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at Sanders Funeral Home.

Evelyn Green

Services for Evelyn "Nanny" Green, 76, of Lubbock will be 4 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Home's Abbey Chapel with Barry Stephens of Monterey Church of Christ officiating.

Burial will be in City of Lubbock cemetery under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

She died Monday, June 12, 2000.

She was born July 15, 1922, in Lakeview. She married L.J. "Pete" Green on July 15, 1944, in Olton. She worked for Willie Lusk Boots and James Leddy Bootmakers.

She was a member of Monterey Church of Christ and DAV. She was inducted into the American Heritage Center in Lubbock.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Edward Rucker Benny Joe Green, both of Lubbock; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Fred C. Martin

Fred C. Martin, 84, of Aspermont, died Friday evening at an Abilene Care Center. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Aspermont, officiating by Rev. Dolan Brinson with burial to follow in the Aspermont cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Aspermont.

Fred was born in Spur, Texas to Calvin and Addie Collett Martin. He was a graduate of Spur High school; after graduation Fred served his country in the Marine Corps in WWII overseas in Pago Pago, Tutulia, Solomon Islands, Kwajalein Atoll, Guadalcanal, Noumea, New Caledona. He participated in the assault and capture of Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Island, participated in the assault and capture of Eniwetok Atoll and the assault and capture of Kikini Atoll, Rongelap Atoll and Utirik Atoll. After serving his country in WWII, Fred was honorably discharged from the Marines. He enrolled at Texas Tech University, where he was a member of the Centaurs Fraternity. After his graduation from Texas Tech, Fred started Martin Dozer Company, which he operated until the 1970ís. Fred also owned and operated Martin Oil Company. He served his community as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Aspermont Independent School District. He served as the Republican Chairman for Stonewall County and held the first Republican election on Stonewall County history. Fred was also instrumental in bringing water to Aspermont in the 1950ís. Fred was an officer in the West Texas Oil & Gas Association and a member of the Texas & National Oil and Gas Association.

Fred married Celia Ann Humphreys; she preceded in death in 1981.

Survivors include his wife of 25 year, Sherry Tibbets Martin of Aspermont, Texas; daughters, Celia Ann Jones of Aspermont, Susan Martin of Aspermont, and Harriet Upton and husband, Bud of San Angelo; step daughter, Angela Fannin Stewart and husband, Kyle of Buffalo Gap; brother, Everett Martin and wife, Frances of Spur; three granddaughters, Tres Jones, Candice Upton and Maggie Upton; three step grandchildren, KJ Stewart, Ty Stewart, and Matt Stewart.

He was also preceded in death by brother, Albert ĎBuckÓ Martin; one granddaughter, Rebel Jones; and on nephew whom he considered a son, Hoss Martin.

Family requests memorials to donors favorite charity.

Willie Nell Thompson

Willie Nell Thompson of Woodrow departed this life on June 10, 2008, at the age of 84 years. She was born to A. L. and Willie Mary (Lane) Baker on April 2, 1924, in Haskell County. She married Marvin H. Smith on Nov. 21, 1941. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1963. Ms. Thompson was a seamstress until her retirement in 1963. Willie married her second husband, Mansel E. Thompson on May 1, 1958. He also preceded her in death on April 17, 1987. She was a member of Church of Christ by faith.

Those left to cherish her memory are Laquita Nell Sims and husband, Lee of Woodrow; one son, Jerry Smith and wife Barbie of Warsaw, Mo.; six grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; one brother, Glen Baker and wife Heloise of Wellman.

She is preceded in death by both her husbands; her parents; five sisters; and four brothers.

Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2008, at White Memorial Chapel in Lubbock. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2008, at White Memorial Chapel in Lubbock with Don Wood officiating.

Cremation arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Lillian Faye Coker Howell Spining
Nov. 30, 1915-June 10, 2008

Lillian was born in Winters, the second child and eldest daughter of Emma Yeats Coker and Robert Lee Coker. Raised on a farm near Morton, she excelled all her life in any endeavor she chose. At an early age, she became a second mother to her younger siblings. In high school, she mastered skills as varied as public speaking and sprinting. As a member of the greatest generation and a young wife, she followed her husband where she could before and after the battles and trials that he faced as warrior against the Axis. As a young mother, she raised her children in towns as varied as Memphis, Texas, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. As a mature wife, she settled with her second husband on Lido Island in Newport Beach, Calif.. Glamorous, sophisticated, elegant, she presided over a large family with intelligence and grace. Her taste in fashion, art, music, and architecture were fine and well developed. Her life was a study in contrasts as she was at home in the finest hotel in Paris, a tramp steamer on the Amazon, a dirt sod shack on the plains of West Texas, or a fine home she redesigned herself on the outer rim of Lido overlooking the bay with her own dock and beach. She died peacefully at home surrounded by loving family.

Preceding her in passing were her mother and father; her elder brother, James; her younger brothers, R.L. and Royce; her sister, Evelyn; her son, Richard; and her husbands, Durwood and Paul.

She is survived by her sister, Modell; her ister-in-law, Ruthie; her sister-in-law, Alyce; her brothers-in-law, Ben and Sleepy; her sons, Jamie and Paul; her daughters, Karen and Coleen; her daughters-in-law Paula and Heidi; her grandsons, Mathew, Jake, Damian, and Richard; her granddaughters, Shannon, Jesse Star, Britt, Lily Kate, Arcaidia, Adrianne, and Jenny Blaze; and her great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Taylor, Alex, and Kaya. She is also survived by her irreplaceable friend and companion, Jewel; and two felines, Pede and Lucy, who brought her hours of humor and joy.

The family wishes to embrace her caregivers Florica, Eva, and Norma who gave her comfort during her declining days.

Services to be held at 1 p.m. at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach, Calif., Friday, June 13, 2008. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation made in her name to the St. Andrews Church, the American Diabetic Association, or the charity of your choice.

Elena Navarro

Rosary for Elena Navarro, 84, of Lubbock was held at 7:30 Thursday, March 27, 2008 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lubbock. Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday March 28, 2008 at the San Lorenzo Catholic Church with Rev. Roland Buxkemper officiating. Burial was in the Lorenzo cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Lorenzo.

Elena passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at her home in Lubbock.

She was born Aug. 18, 1923 in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico to Manuel and Francisca Vasquez. Her husband Jose Navarro preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lubbock and San Lorenzo Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death by two sons, Luis Montalvo and Oscar Montalvo; two daughters, Amparito and Rosemary two brothers, Manuel Vasquez and Juan Vasquez and a sister Celestina Vasquez..

Survivors include three sons, Victor Montalvo of Lubbock, Jose Montalvo and Jesus Montalvo both of Richmond, Va.; three daughters, Maria "Lupe" Montalvo, Maria Elena Vega both of Lubbock, Juana Zamora of San Antonio, Texas; three brothers, Concepcion Vasquez, Hipolito Vasquez and Eladio Vasquez all of Mexico; six stepchildren; 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and many many nieces and nephews.

Oren Dean Nichols

Oren "Dean" Nichols of Levelland, 64, of Levelland passed away March 25, 2008 in Levelland.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Levelland with Brother Steve Vernon. Music by Mr. and Mrs. Patton Parish. Viewing will be Friday, March 28th from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Head Duarte Funeral Home of Levelland.

Dean was born on Sept. 7, 1943 to Mark and Ollie Nichols of Lubbock. He spent most of his childhood in Happy, graduating from Happy High School in 1962. Throughout his life he enjoyed country music, camping, hiking, and reading his collection of Western novels and history books. He was an active member of the Levelland Senior Citizens Center. He worked mainly in the oil field industry, working for Diamond Shamrock in Dumas from 1966-1975. He worked for Amoco Oil until his retirement in 1994. He married Lydia Romo in Tucumcari, New Mexico, on Nov. 26, 2003. "Dean" was a Christian and attended Park Drive Baptist Church and St. Michael's Catholic Church of Levelland. Memorial donations may be made to Levelland Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include spouse, Lydia Romo Nichols of Levelland; son, Randall (Joebeth) Nichols of Amarillo; daughter, Mona Nichols of Amarillo; brother, Lyndahl Nichols of Arlington; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Roberts.

Pallbearers will be David Romo, John Hernandez, Larry Joe Kirkland, Josh Kirkland, Lance Burt, Max Ledesma, and Kirk Nichols.

Internment will be held at 3 p.m. at Happy cemetery of Happy, Texas, under the direction of Head Duarte Funeral Home of Levelland.
